    When I hear the tops and snares from the releases that came off the 688 that my crew put out at the start of the 90's there is a distinct crisp sound that I still love to this day.

    Don't be afraid to drive the signals to tape hard past 0, into the +3/+6 on the meters. Try to get some type II cassettes; I always used Maxell XLII in my 488. Good times!

      Thankfully all this stuff is still made enmasse today. Believe this or not but governments went back to using Cassette tapes for Data storage because of the shelf life being much longer than cd's. Crazy eh

    great find Sight, congrats - those are great recorders , I've got almost the same model Tascam Midi Studio 644 basically same but without the bridge. learning curve with the digital display is quite steep , but its very versatile unit! one you get to grips with it its a lot of fun! I got a 688 when it was new in October 1990. I still have my 688. It’s in great shape, for being 30 years old. It’s currently in the shop getting serviced. I have a lot of other analog and digital recorders, but the 688 will always be my favorite. I haven’t used it in 15 years, so I am looking forward to working with it again. When I got it, I felt like George Martin at Abbey Road! It is such a great recorder. Your video is great, make another one about the 688 if you can!

      Would there be a massive sound difference in the 688 over something like the 414 mk2 ?

    • @philhurd7990
      @philhurd7990 2 роки тому +1

      @@saren6538 The sound quality of the 688 is among the greatest Tascam has ever achieved. The difference between it and a 414 mkII is significant. The 414 mkII is a great machine, but the 688 is in a class by itself.

I honestly ea lot of this vintage stuff is way overpriced right now and it'll come down eventually. I refuse to pay top dollar for these dinosaurs, especially when companies like SSL keep making more and more affordable options. If you catch a mean deal though, go for it!

    The cool thing about the 688 is that it has a powerful midi capability, you can literally sync your 688 to your mpc via midi/external sync smpte source (sync switch Allowing you to have free tracks on your 688. You can seriously go in detail with recording via midi. And another great feature, you can automate recording feature with song scene, with that same sync switch and big display. 688 is a serious midistudio recorder. Oh and it has a great sound

    We as a 5 piece metal band bought one new in 1994 with an advance from a Japanese record company after our 1st studio album. It was stupidly expensive compared with what you can buy now but with the addition of a stereo Tascam reel to reel to make bounce downs of multitracks to send back to the 8 track we somehow managed to get 8 tracks of drums, 6 tracks of rhythm guitars, 6 tracks of solo's, the bass track, stereo keys, doubled lead vox, doubled 4 part vocal harmonies and multiple effect tracks. Crazy by todays standards but had more energy and feel than the crap that the pro studio gave us... Thanks for the memories

    Nice find! whoever pawned that must’ve took really good care of it. I’ve been looking all over the house the past few weeks myself for an old dictaphone I used to have that had different playback speeds to noodle around with myself but I still ain’t found it. I think about everyone from the 90’s remembers those smaller four track cassette recorders but I ain’t ever seen nothing like that!? Looking forward to the follow up videos and loop packs!

    Brother I wanna thank you for this video and review. I bought both an MPC One and a Tascam Model 12 a few years because i was wanna to get back into making DAWless soul music like i used to do 30+ years was originally looking to cop a Tascam 488 mkII. My mentor and longtime musical collaborator who I used to do my thing when i was a teen used the 488 as his main tracker for all his live bass guitar drums and we jumped in a time machine over the phone recently by revisting all his funk recordings from over 30 years and the warmth and sound is still unmatched. He recently revealed to me just how much of the holy grail the 688 is and I'm thinking about copping one for him as a gift. I'm so glad i came across your video because now i think I'm gonna fork out some cash to hook my brother up so we can start cooking up some classic lo-fi soul funk. I'm a serious Prince PFunk head who came up in the golden age of hip-hop and I'm 52, so I'm still going for a sound that evokes the vibes of that era of music i was influenced by. This video of yours is a sign that I'm on the right track and for me to take some risks and make that investment in the 688. The cool thing about the 688 is that you can record all 8 tracks simultaneously unlike the other models like the 488 which only let's you record 4 tracks simultaneously at a time and you can port all 8 tracks out simultaneously as well with no real complications....preferably into Logic or whatever DAW or systems. Hearing that warmth from my homies earlier recordings is a sound that would work WELL in 2024 as far as having some sh-t that'll set you apart from the rest. I'm definitely gonna check out your review on the Tadcam Model 12 - which I'm still in the early stages of getting to know. I wanna see what kind of sonic magic i can conjure up with both the Tascam Model 12 and thy MPC One working with one another exclusively. Thank you again for this video 🙏🏾

I told him I'd give him $100 as is, no hard feelings if it doesn't work out. Yup yup 😁 he went for it and as soon as I got it home it was awesome to discover everything worked as it should.

    Hey! I’m looking into buying one of these, but I’m curious what the sound quality is like compared to the Tascam 4 tracks like the Portastudio 424. I’m assuming there’s some loss of fidelity going from 4 tracks to 8 tracks, like loss of lows and highs. Have you done any comparisons, and would you recommend buying one of these if someone is interested in playing stuff like tape loops or looking for that stereotypical “warmth”? How is the tape speed control for playback? Is there a speed wheel and low/high playback speed? That would basically be mandatory for me for what I’m looking to do. Thanks!

So seeing that price, i did what every black person in America woud've done, i offered them $650 -- whole time i was straight laughing inside -- but they accepted the offere and said come get it. So this morning i drove 2.5 hours to grab it, but when i got there it powered up but kept shutting off; i was heartbroken. So owning several MPC and knowing my way around the inside of them, i took a chance and offered them $350 for the nonfucntional MPC X, knowing i could fix it, or flip it and selling back for the $350 i offered them, and they accepted it. Drove home and put that bad boy in update mode, and reinstalled the latest OS and Firmware, and Voila; just like that i scored a perfect condition OG MPX for only $350. Just was watching this video and laughing, hearing you tell your story. Dope find, keep up the channel fam

    So I just received one of these that was unfortunately not packed well. Most of the functions seem to work as advertised except for a major one- I can't seem to get the thing to record anything to tape? The meters are working, I get sound in the head phones, monitors, etc. The tape runs, FF, rewinds, all of those functions, etc. However, when I go to play back what I supposedly recorded nothing? I followed the manual, pages 18-19, word for word and still nothing? I even tested my new cassette tapes just to make sure those weren't bad, but that wasn't it? I'm at a loss and may need to return the item? But I thought that I would try these 688 comment sections first, just in case I was totally missing/not trying something, etc. Anyone on here who may have some words of wisdom, know these units well, and might know what is going on, I would sure appreciate it- Thanks.

    analog tape is 65 million magnetic ferrous iron oxide particles, discrete to each electron per atom in each particle, per second, at 15 ips; so at 1.8ips cassette speed it'd be around 7.8 million particles per second, again, each discrete to the electron's energy state of each atom of each particle, versus 44, or 48 thousand times per second with 65536 discrete steps (16bit), or 16777216 (24bit) if you are lucky, this is genuinely why i see even the "lowest level" of reel to reels, being cassettes, as better than analog, their high frequency response is mechanical at the atomic scale and that leads to something interesting versus digital's perfect reproduction of the musicians sweating, like if i want that i want it with analog warmth at 30 inches per second on 2 inch width tape at least

    Good afternoon..First of all,new doesn't mean better,and there's a lot of LIES and myths about tape and the machines.There's NOTHING wrong with tape and never was,yet the industry needed a way to keep us buying and to control how we recorded.That's why they went from Cassette/VHS and then tried to use copy protection on DAT recorders.Cassettes were a great,clear,and efficient way to make recordings,archive,and share music,and they ended up wanting us to pay for content,over and over.What you might want to do though,is back up,find someone adept in working on tape machines,and clean it,service it,and bring it back up to specs,if it's not quite there.Then you want to keep the heads aligned,demagnetized,clean,and set the bias,for the blanks you intend to use.I used a LOT of Maxells,like the XL2,the white metal ones,and sometimes Denon,Sony,BASF,yet rarely TDKs because my machines would eat/tangle them.I have a Sansui 6 track cassette machine but i have yet to use it,because i use my SVHS semipro machines,a Darwin,and my samplers,like the Rp;and MV8800...I dont buy a bunch of gear i will rarely use either,so if I am not using something,it was probably given to me.I think gearlust is for children and folks who need validation,and I just dont,because I am over 10 years old..

    • @labandlegacy
      @labandlegacy  3 роки тому

      Good points, but you have to admit scrubbing, FFWD/Rewind isnt very efficient lol. Being able to skip tracks was a real feature, even though it eventually killed the album in a lot of ways. I like the fact that more people are realizing the charm and irreplaceable personality of these types of machines and technologies, and I think it's dope that the appreciation is mostly coming from artists and creators.
      I am definitely with you in getting it serviced. I think this one may be with me for a long time so I might as well invest in some TLC.

    • @michaels5166
      @michaels5166 3 роки тому

      @@labandlegacy I use SVHS mostly as far as tape,and the efficiency has never been a problem,once you learn the machine.See,the issue with gearlust is,you cannot master but so much at one time,and end up with redundant machines,doing similar things.By having machines like the MV8800,Yamaha QY700.Midi patchbays,the ASR10,and more than two computer platforms,all the bases are covered.You can sequence through a DAW or through the hardware,and come up with endless sounds,from the samplers i have alone.If I was getting something new,it would be something like the Iridium,Polyend stuff.Soma stuff,HydraSynth,Medusa,and others which scream exploration.

    • @ourstarsRstars

      Don’t use metal tapes type IV. It won’t hurt the heads or anything. Your recordings just won’t sound as good as type II cassettes which the machine is biased and designed to use. Metal tapes are also harder to erase. Obviously using a cassette based multitrack you’ll want it to be able to erase properly for bouncing, overdubs or stray fart sounds. Damn I’m babbling!!! Rad score homes. Ridiculous price! I started buying/collecting multi-tracks 15 or so years ago and now I wish I would’ve horded every single one I saw on eBay back then. The prices have gone bananas. Have fun dude beautiful machine.

    this is awesome, but doesn’t it also seems stupid that with all the technology we have in 2024 some kind of analog emulation isn’t built into every piece of recording equipment, something that would be so accurate as to fool even the most trained ears? it seems totally doable and yet I don’t get why it isnt everything- especially mpcs and stand-alone digital recorders

    • @labandlegacy

      The new MPCs have Flavor Pro, and I have to say it’s been so good at vintage emulation that I have totally left this Tascam on the shelf. I also found a tape emulation plugin from Plugin Alliance that sounds awesome when I’m using the computer. Between those 2 I really haven’t felt the need to use much analog gear. I also have a pedal board for resampling sounds that are too “clean”.

      @@labandlegacy the truth is out there. My statement is clear. While all Tascams are great (I owned them all, but you are used to someone who factchecks and does the job for you) the 688 is not the great or godfather of all. Unless you use the words "Great/Godfather" just because is big and large and has 8 channels + the ability to take midis. The 688 were made in a time where the transiction from analog to digital was a thing, in fact they added midi ports and digital scene control which penalised the audio fidelity. Not bashing on your video or disrespect at all, but this is UA-cam where people who make videos dare to go off track and push a bit over the limit to make the content appealing, and trust me I do understand the trend (cassette). But then someone who knows more than us put you in place, and please stop this factcheck nonsense. If you are smart and someone told you something different go and get up to date.
