I really really enjoyed this episode, and I love this Yappie series. So far, this series has brought into light what most Asians struggle with, being the "model minority," struggling with stereotypes and so on. But this episode has done a good job highlighting the thoughts of several Asians. Sometimes we obsess over our race so much that we question ourselves and our motives, and it's sad to see that race plays such a big role in who we're friends with, who our significant others can be, and so on. Race shouldn't be a huge deal, but it is, and I love the way you guys highlighted the way Asians think of other races, and the way that other races think of Asians.
I'm fortunate to live in a community with a lot of Asians. As a Chinese person dating an Indian, it really struck a chord with me. I'm glad to live in a place where this isn't as big of a deal, but this helped me realize that out in the world, once I leave my bubble, I'll be faced with criticism, just as the people in the video were. I'm glad that Andrew was able to overcome and grow outside his box. I can't wait for the next episode!

I totally agree! I am a black girl living in a community of dominantly Asian population. You do get attracted to who is in your surroundings. I grew up in the white community as well. I am attracted to different races but Asian is closer to the mentality that I was raised with. Respect for your elderly and certain household rules. I do not have to explain so much as if I was dating a white person for example. The mix of culture is so nice. Interestingly enough, many Asian guys love R&B and hip-hop and have similar hobbies as I. I am happy that this serie features a mixed girl, she has 2 cultures, you can see why Andrew and her bonded. It gives a positive light to another minority. It's refreshing. Thank you WONGFU +wongfuproductions @wongfuproductions

Yes, agree. Societal views of stereotypes of won its war in the dating scene. Men and women alike go in with implicit biases and expect o e to "act like" the stereotypes they are known for. Which is stupid in my point and all these racial prejudice and predicament usually have people alone. No one can tell you why they are attracted to a race especially if they never experienced the ethnic culture of that person then they are trying to complete a conquest, which fails because once they realize we are all men and women at the end of the day, you should be dating someone for the content of there character and the integrity of themselves and a loving heart..all those characteristics and values in a person should be primary, secondary, and tertiary. The problem with interracial dating usually comes to marriage, where the parent has implicit biases and is doing the same thing that society does. If you aren't for your child's happiness and you feel that being with the same race is going to help..just look at the divorce rates. Race needs to stop being a superficial reason not to date a particular race. However, due to so many factors of what's going on in our society there is a divide between POCs and white people. Environmental factors also play a role in that too, so many individuals are hung up on false innuendoes of what it means to be a POCs and those people find out damn they do not act RATCHET 🤣🤦🏾‍♀️🤯🙄. Then it says a lot about your character about a person and 10 times out 10 your going to dump this person because if their personality and character not there race.

    • @thebatonmaster
      @thebatonmaster 4 роки тому +17

This is shortsighted of the deeper reality. Let's pretend that you're a black woman (I don't know if you are or aren't, but for the sake of argument). Statistically it's a fact that black women are the least preferred of all racial categories when it comes to dating. Men of all races are the least interested in black women compared to other interracial dating options. All of those men would tell you: "I'm not racist, it's just my preference. There's no racist reason behind it."
Let's think about that. Men of EVERY race just "happen" to prefer black women the least? It's just "coincidence" that black women are seen as the least attractive? Obviously racism has something to do with it, otherwise it would randomly vary based on the person. But, people aren't consciously aware of the deep reasons behind their preferences. So, no one thinks that systemic racism is operating within them because they don't consciously see it in themselves.
I don't mean to say it's bad to have any preferences, but it is foolishly ignorant to think that racial preferences are merely individual. No, preferences work on a societal level also.

    • @jonothandoeser

It’s a tricky topic when you’re mixed with anything. Sometimes when you’re mixed with black and your other ethnicity isn’t “as prevalent” then people will just call you black, even if you’re mixed with Asian or white etc. Sometimes though when you’re mixed, for example black and white, but you look more lighter skinned, you will be called white although you’re mixed. And vice versa. Take Logic and Zendaya for example. Logic is mixed, black and white, yet he’s called white. Zendaya is mixed, black and white, yet she’s called black.

I actually think Brad's character made a really good point about growing up around mostly Asians because that influences the types of people you're attracted to. I think people tend to be more attracted to what they're exposed to and end up dating the type(s) of people they're surrounded by. If you grow up in a multicultural area, you're exposed to more than if the area you grow up in is homogenous. But, I don't think there's anything wrong with dating one specific type of person if that's what you live around.

There's been many asian guys I've been attracted to in the past, and could never muster up the courage to tell any of them because I always get the vibe they never want anything to do with a black girl. Same with white guys tbh. I like that this video shows a black girl and and asian together, and overall, I love all the interracial couplings. I love seeing different worlds come together with the best of what they have to share, and make something even better, its so beautiful to me.

@OT7 not true by a long shot. When you are exposed to another group of people, chances are you will find someone attractive because there are attractive people in almost every group of people the more time you spend with them. I was introduced in middle school to Asian students as there was a very high population in my school. So I had my first crush there on an Asian boy and he liked me back.

I think it's easier to meet in a more natural setting like if you work with an Asian man or white man or who ever it will be easier for them to talk to you then ask you out. Other than that you may need to go to a dating site or meet through people.

I see alot of comments saying "they dont, they wont they cant blah blab blab" but really... We have the same issues u do. Why would we ever think a black girl is attracted to us when we've been taught we aren't desired by anyone? And even if an asian guy got a non asian girl its automatically assumed its because of money. Dont believe me? Stop taking words from random commenters and actually see the result. Some twitch streamer girl named lisa peachy married an asian dude and her comments are flooded with whites blacks and latinos saying he must have money, yada yada yada. So from years of being told we arent attractive, and that theres no way someone outside our race can be attracted to us unless its about money, how could we muster up the courage to even approach a black women. Same applies vice versa, black women have been told they are unattractive and therefore feel the same way. If anyone understands black women, its asian men. Stop listening to all these random sourpuss commentors and please take some of what i said to heart

Then on the flip side it says the same thing to asian men.
Yet, when it comes to asian women and black men. It like they are only desirable because of sexual dominance or submissiveness. Not because they see them as themselves, being human.
That is why racism is a mother f×Cker. We are now acknowledg the side affects from it. From self hate , colorism, to dating outside your race. Not because you love that person but to erase apart of yourself.

It's usually pretty obvious why they chose to go with one over the other once you hear them talk about their upbringing and which parent might have had more influence....my point is that it should come down to her preference as far as which half she identifies with and he really shouldn't have made that comment to begin with.

I've been watching Wong Fu since the Just a Nice Guy days, and from the chasm between UCSD and SDSU, they have helped me feel included as a fourth generation Japanese American who has always felt kept at a distance in terms of Asian American (and primarily first/second generation) culture. For a long time, there was something deeply beautiful about simply making videos that just so happen to be written by, directed by, and starring Asian people. And now, as an almost thirtysomething, I find myself yearning for something of more socio-political relevance, something to spark conversation, and something that reflects more of the thoughts I have on a daily basis.
So this series, coming out in this climate, and being even more relevant to me since I coincidentally date a black woman, this show hits home. Especially the part where Janine/Kaleena tells Phil/Andrew that she wants him to care about her being black. Because that shit matters. Identity matters, and I feel like a piece some people may have missed in this series was the concept of investigating what it means to be an Asian American. Like, what it really means. Past the dim sum and boba and liking Wong Fu. Which is such a complicated question that seems to go unexplored so often.
So I just wanted to say thank you, Wong Fu. I feel like I've been such a quiet supporter for this decade+, the least I could do was spend less than what I spent on tonight's dinner for the series, and the literal years of support and affirmation you never knew I credit you for. So much love.
P.S. - It's only $8, ya'll. C'mon. A good portion of people spend more money than that at Starbucks. When was the last time Starbucks made you feel visible, heard, attractive, intelligent, artistic, or passionate?

In case no one's told you today, your work matters. This series matters. The conversations you spark matter. The acts of creating and showing others that we're capable and talented and have real stories to tell in interesting, unique, singular ways matter. The onus you've dared to put back on your viewership to challenge themselves, their friends, their families in a world that continually places the responsibility and the ability to be and stay woke on the individual, that matters.

Those racist studies that say black women are the least desired is just a way to program black women to having low self-esteem/less competitive. It's also a way to contnue programing men from dating black women. Let's be clear, an attractive black woman that's fit and classy is a force to be reckoned with. Other races of women are not superior to black women but we are very unique competition for them. Part of white supremacy is to make the sheep believe that white women or women that look similar (Asians/Latinas/Biracials) are the standard of beauty. If black beauty is recognized more by other races of men then the game changes for other races of women. In a FAIR competition that's not corrupted with racial biases, other races of women could not compete with the unique beauty of black women. We are the polar oppostite of white women. I cannot count how many times I've heard an Asian woman (as I am one myself) say that they can't date Asian guys because they're gross or that it's like dating a brother (what?). And then they openly admit to only liking white guys, which apparently is ok but it's not ok for white men to only like Asian girls. I love how uncomfortable and honest this got. It's such a messy, touchy subject, and it's so refreshing to see it all laid out there.
It's endlessly frustrating, because if people see you as white (as in, you're passing), when you express interest in others outside of your race, some will immediately think it's some sort of fetish, which is honestly gross. I'm Latina mixed and I've always been attracted to men with certain features, which includes a lot of Asian men. I feel at this point, if I end up with an Asian guy, some people are going to confirm their assumption. But if I don't, then they will STILL confirm their assumption, as in "Oh, you won't even seriously date them."
I just feel that you can't win either way. So perhaps people should just date who they're honestly interested in and try not to worry about it so much, as long as you yourself know that you love them for the right reasons.

I think this has been my favorite episode out of the 4 so far. It is so interesting to see these topics on display in this format. They are things that I have never thought about this deeply as an Asian American myself. While there is SO much to unpack here, it is a very important topic to discuss and something I wish more people were aware of. The message is so powerful. Camera work is amazing as always. I felt some of the script was a little forced, but understandable since this is a short series. Overall I loved it. I hope this reaches more people.

I'm 4 episodes in and i'm loving this entire channel man. I've been on here for hours. And your Videography is so professional and movie like. And your character is so easy to get attached too. I don't often subscribe to channels but I can't wait to see what you do next. Getting some great insights on Asian culture.

  • @pernellius

Wow, I REALLY loved this episode. Especially how the writing handled some of the nuances that come with interracial dating (and there's just so many). I'm mostly commenting because I wanted to add in my two pennies , assuming there's other gaysians watching this series that left with some feelings unaddressed.
The sister's declaration of dating only asian guys because she was tired of being fetishized is something that I resonate so hard with because ohmygoodness are gay asian men fetishized the hell out of. It's exhausting. On the other side of the token, I started to get super critical of my streak of attraction to other Asian dudes because, similar to Andrew, I felt like it was borderline 'yellow fever' (or at least mellow fever).
It's taken me years of walking that intersection of being gay and Asian to accept that as a gay man, I'm able to love a variation of myself. And that's not a bad thing. Touching back on Simu's character's comments, I grew up with crude representations of Asian men that eventually translated/manifested into a lot of self-hate. So at 25, dating and being attracted to Asian guys is a unique position of being able to express a form of self-love through openly loving someone who is like me.
I only mention all this to reiterate why I found this episode so fascinating. To me, this heterosexual Asian perspective of dating within our race as sort of ordinary (reflected in Brad's comments on the ofscreen Asian Guy/White Girl couple) is interesting. Because from my Gaysian perspective, I think -- in context of the portrayal of Asian men that apparently many of us grew up with -- Asian guys dating other Asian guys is kind of defiant. Radical even. And kinda hot (but maybe that's just me).
This is the first video in a long time that's stirred up these kind of thoughts in me. And I'm really thankful that this particular episode finally helped me articulate them a little more clearly, to the point of typing out this long ass comment. Thank you, Wong Fu team.
(I feel like this all made sense. But maybe I'm just projecting. If I'm totally misinformed, please downvote my comment so that it can be hidden into oblivion.)

I absolutely adore this sereis and it's relevance in today's society. It's so refreshing to finally have a show touches on topics that sadly I dont feel have ever been discussed to this extent in the media. Wong Fu understands that if you want something done, sometimes you have to do it yourself and I'm completely here for it. I love the execution of it, nothing seems forced but rather brought to your attention to acknowledge. Keep it up!
