How to set up OpenWRT as an Access Point repeating your WiFi SSID

- Do you have weak spots in your home WiFi? So did I and I decided to fix it on a budget. Here is the how to set up OpenWRT as an AccessPoint repeating your WiFi SSID (repeater mode) using the LuCi web interface.
For the demo we use a TP-Link TL-WR1043N/ND v2 which has OpenWRT (Chaos Calmer 15.05 with LuCi 15.05) which is factory reset.
I use a mac for the demo, because it was the device giving the most WiFi issues in the house.The default language of the mac is Dutch but the buttons you need to click will be in the same place ;)
On my Android phone I use the app Wifi Analyzer to pick the best WiFi frequencies for the router and the various access points.

In the video you say there should be a SSID "Openwrt", but in the 2:18 your MacBook still connected to the "SUN" access point and you continue to configure the router with SSID "SUN". Is there a mistake?

A newer one using 23.5 would be useful. Several of the screens are different, also you do not start with a wifi.. all radios start disabled. If I follow instructions here I cannot contact the router once the address is changed because I have not turned on a wifi radio yet.
you have to connect rj45 cable and just assign the same ip adress to your lan card
Cool guide, 4 years later can open wrt just mesh to new access points.
Set up 1 router as main, second ap mesh's to router and pulls config.
Main router used for all config changes. ?

Do your additional AP connected to your main router via ethernet or it is wirelessly?

@@MarkVletter A client mode bridge as described here wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Mode_Wireless is specifically designed to work without an Ethernet connection.
One major purpose for this is if it inconvenient or implausible to connect the client router (the AP(s)) to the main router.
So I have 2 questions:
1) Are you sure this actually sets up a client mode bridge?
2) If you are sure, then do you disable DHCP only for the client routers (APs) because it seemed to me the main router should remain capable of handing out access points to regular clients while having static ip addresses reserved for the client routers. Additionally, aren't the client routers responsible for handing out IP addresses to its regular clients?

~Disconnect the (soon-to-be) Dumb AP from your network, and connect your computer to it with an Ethernet cable.
Use the web interface to go to Network → Interfaces and select the LAN interface.
Enter an IP address “next to” your main router on the field “IPv4 address”. (If your main router has IP 192.168.1.1, enter 192.168.1.2). Set DNS and gateway to point into your main router to enable internet access for the dumb AP itself
Then switch to “DHCP Server” tab (or scroll down in older versions, 18.06 and earlier, of Luci) and select the checkbox “Ignore interface: Disable DHCP for this interface.”
Click “IPv6 Settings” tab and set everything to “disabled”.
Under “Physical Settings” tab, ensure “Bridge interfaces” is ticked, and ensure BOTH of your interfaces (eth0, wlan0) are selected, in order to allow traffic between wireless and wired connections.
In the top menu go to System → Startup, and disable firewall, dnsmasq and odhcpd in the list of startup scripts.
Click the Save and Apply button. Hard-Restart your router if you're not able to connect anymore.
Go to 192.168.1.2 (or whatever address you specified) and check if the settings for the LAN interface are the same.
Use an Ethernet to connect one of the LAN ports on your main router to one of the LAN/switch ports of your “new” dumb AP. (There's no need to connect the WAN port of the Dumb AP.)
You are done.
You should use channels 1,6,11 other channels overlap themselves..
So how were the 2 connected?

Can you add up a VLAN ID 10 on this setup on a different SSID? Sample your SSID: SUN is on a LAN network, i want to add another SSID: SUN2 on with a VLAN ID 10. assuming your main router is giving out VLAN ID 10. thanks in advance.
You can add a dns service to your access point. OpenDNS, your provider DNS or Google will do the trick.

But why do I have to use an external DNS?
Is this still the up to date-way to do it? Has Mesh changed anything?
Mesh is usually implemented on a per manufacturer basis, ie. Asus routers can only mesh with Asus routers, D-link routers can only mesh with D-link routers, etc. If you have routers from different manufacturers, then yes, this is your only option.
If you do have routers from the same manufacturers, you cannot use custom firmware like OpenWRT to mesh. The default router firmware will usually have an option to act as an access point in a mesh network, and this is specific to each manufacturer so instructions will vary. This may change in the future as OpenWRT updates and adds new packages.

You should not turn off dhcp service. Then all clients after can leas dynamic IP from main dhcp server or from accessPoint (force option should be off)
I did config repeater as 192.168.178.2 because main internet router is 192.168.178.1 but can't reach .2 with ping or www what's wrong ?!

@@srikanthkv No, I gave up. It's a bug... maybe.... Try config main router as .2 and OpenWRT as .1 maybe this will do the trick.

What if my main router has an ip of 10.x.x.x???
I did had done all these things with a DG834GT router. It works but only if I set a static IP. If I do a DHCP it connects my laptop but somehow it sees the gateway as 0.0.0.0, so no Internet. My phone works OK. Normally I use static IPs for everything but I'm trying to use a chromecast device which (stupidly) is so locked down you can't set any network parameters - so it is unusable.

I changed my main outer IP to 192.168.10.2 and change the repeaters to 192.168.10.4 but after changing the repeater IP, I cannot connect to repeater portal. What went wrong?
