  • After searching the internet for a Last 5 Years bootleg with Norbert and Sherie, I realized there was no full bootleg just individual song clips. So, I collected all of them and put them into one, full video! Enjoy!

This musical is so special. She is so real and raw. I've probably listened to this CD 1000 times. It's great to get to see the original stage production. Though I'm surprised how poorly staged it was. And it seems like the orchestra is running their timing rather than the other way around. It is almost like it found its full realization in the CD recording, which was a thing of perfection.

Yep. This was the early, off-Bway production. They probably recorded the OBC album later......

@@trb7153 There is no OBC album. This isn't a Broadway show. The album you're referring to is the Original Cast album with these two during the course of the off-broadway run.

This is my favorite version, I first heard the 2017 soundtrack and their voices just pulled me in. Norbert’s stage presence is amazing, he’s really humorous and entertaining. Sheries acting is so real , and that’s why I love this version. This pairing is amazing, I wish that they would have played in Next to normal.

    • @QHG415
      @QHG415 10 днів тому

It’s funny you mentioned those as the characteristics that stuck out to you about the two actors, because for me it was the exact same characteristics, except it was flipped. Haha. Personally, Norbert’s genuineness and realness is what made me love his interpretation, and Sherie’s incredible humor and stage presence is what made me love hers.
Just goes to show you how much of the complete package they both are, since I also absolutely agree with your description for Norbert and for Sherie. They really both do tick every single one of the boxes.
I 100% agree that it’s my favorite version

Playing the silhouettes of Cathy and Jamie that sit there doing nothing in the other person's time line must be one of the easiest roles on broadway.

I always found it interesting how in Moving Too Fast, Jamie mentions that they “start to take the next step together” whereas in Part of That, Cathy says that she “follow[s] in his stride, instead of side by side.”
They were just in such completely different places it’s kind of insane.

Jamie is so much more likeable and sympathizable in this version compared to the movie and the other versions I’ve seen some amounts of. There’s just something about the depth of the character that Norbert puts into it-the sweetness, youthfulness, genuine charm, and even slight dorkiness-that makes you understand what he’s going through and want to root for him.
At the same time, Sherie is so likeable as well. And just incredibly hilarious, brilliant, and right on the money during the comedic parts. And don’t even get me started on how magical her voice is.
No wonder the chemistry between the two of them is so magical in this version. They really do justice to this incredible show.

NLB sound so undisputedly romantic in any love song he sings and the leading lady matched this song to perfection. Just learned NLB is going thru divorce during this time and you can see the sadness in his eyes during this tragic song.

    JAMIE]
    Hey, kid- good morning-
    You look like an angel
I don't remember when we fell asleep
    We should get up, kid-
    Cathy is waiting…
    Look at us, lying here
    Dreaming, pretending
    I made a promise and I took a vow
    I wrote a story
And we changed the ending -
Cathy, just look at me now!
Hold on, facts are facts -
    Just relax, lay low
    All right, the panic recedes:
    Nobody needs to know
    Put on my armor -
    I'm off to Ohio
Back into battle till I don't know when
    Swearing to her that I
    Never was with you
And praying I'll hold you again
Hold on, clip these wings -
    Things get out of hand
    All right, it's over, it's done -
    No one will understand
    No one will understand…
    We build a treehouse
I keep it from shaking -
Little more glue ev'ry time that it breaks
    Perfectly balanced
    And then I start making
    Conscious, deliberate mistakes
    All that I ask for
    Is one little corner -
One private room at the back of my heart
    Tell her I found one
    She sends out battalions
To claim it and blow it apart
    I grip and she grips
    And faster we're sliding
Sliding and spilling, and what can I do?
Come back to bed, kid -
    Take me inside you -
    I promise I won't lie to you
Hold on, don't cry yet -
    I won't let you go
    All right - the panic recedes;
    All right - everyone bleeds;
All right - I get what I need
    And nobody needs
    To know
    Nobody needs to know…
And since I have to be in love with someone
Since I need to be in love with someone
Maybe I could be in love with someone
    Like you…

    Still Hurting:
Jamie is over and Jamie is gone
Jamie's decided it's time to move on
Jamie has new dreams he's building upon
    And I'm still hurting
Jamie arrived at the end of the line
Jamie's convinced that the problems are mine
Jamie is probably feeling just fine
    And I'm still hurting
    What about lies, Jamie?
    What about things
That you swore to be true
    What about you, Jamie
    What about you
Jamie is sure something wonderful died
Jamie decides it's his right to decide
Jamie's got secrets he doesn't confide
    And I'm still hurting
Go and hide and run away
Run away, run and find something better
Go and ride the sun away
    Run away like it's simple
    Like it's right...
    Give me a day, Jamie
    Bring back the lies
Hang them back on the wall
    Maybe I'd see
    How you could be
    So certain that we
    Had no chance at all
Jamie is over and where can I turn?
Covered with scars I did nothing to earn
Maybe there's somewhere a lesson to learn
But that wouldn't change the fact
    That wouldn't speed the time
    Once the foundation's cracked
    And I'm
    Still Hurting

I guess I can't believe you really came
And that we're sitting on this pier
    See, I'm smiling
That means I'm happy that you're here
I stole this sweater from a costume shop
It makes me look like Daisy Mae
    See, we're laughing
I think we're gonna be okay
I mean, we'll have to try a little harder
And bend things to and fro
To make this love as special
As it was five years ago
I mean, you made it to Ohio!
Who knows where else we can go
I think you're really gonna like this show
I'm pretty sure it doesn't suck
See, you're laughing and I'm smiling
    By a river in Ohio
    And you're mine
    We're doing fine
I think we both can see what could be better
I'll own when I was wrong
With all we've had to go through
We'll end up twice as strong
And so we'll start again this weekend
    And just keep rolling along
I didn't know you had to go so soon
I thought we had a little time
Look, whatever, if you have to
Then you have to, so whatever
    It's all right
    We'll have tonight
You know what makes me crazy?
I'm sorry, can I say this?
You know what makes me nuts?
The fact that we could be together
    Here together
    Sharing our night
    Spending our time
And you are gonna choose someone else to be with
    No, you are
Yes, Jamie, that's exactly what you're doing:
You could be here with me
    Or be there with them
As usual, guess which you pick
No, Jamie, you do not have to go to another party
With the same twenty jerks you already know
You could stay with your wife on her f**king birthday
And you could, God forbid, even see my show
And I know in your soul it must drive you crazy
That you won't get to play with your little girlfriends
No, I'm not, no I'm not!
    And the point is, Jamie,
That you can't spend a single day that's not about
You and you and nothing but you
    "Mahvelous" novelist, you!
    Isn't he wonderful, just twenty-eight
    The savior of writing
You and you and nothing but you
    Miles and piles of you
Pushing through windows and bursting through walls
    En route to the sky
    And I...
I swear to God I'll never understand
How you can stand there straight and tall
    And see I'm crying
And not do anything at all

I see the moral as how there are two sides to a relationship and it takes two dedicated people to form one. I also see it as a story of how resilience and integrity are two of the most essential values of an adult, and by writing the show about younger people, JRB shows how you have to grow up before you grow together

    Shiksa Goddess:
    I'm breaking my mother's heart
The longer I stand looking at you
The more I hear it splinter and crack
    From ninety miles away
    I'm breaking my mother's heart
The JCC of Spring Valley is shaking
    And crumbling to the ground
    And my grandfather's rolling
    Rolling in his grave
If you had a tattoo, that wouldn't matter
If you had a shaved head, that would be cool
If you came from Spain or Japan
Or the back of a van
Just as long as you're not from Hebrew school
I'd say, "Now I'm getting somewhere!
    I'm finally breaking through!"
I'd say, "Hey! Hey! Shiksa goddess!
I've been waiting for someone like you"
I've been waiting through Danica Schwartz and Erica Weiss
    And the Handelman twins
I've been waiting through Heather Greenblatt, Annie Mincus, Karen Pincus and Lisa Katz
And Stacy Rosen, Ellen Kaplan, Julie Silber and Janie Stein
I've had Shabbas dinners on Friday nights
With every Shapiro in Washington Heights
But the minute I first met you
I could barely catch my breath
I've been standing for days with the phone in my hand
Like an idiot scared to death
I've been wandering through the desert
I've been beaten, I've been hit
My people have suffered for thousands of years
    And I don't give a sh*t!
If you had a pierced tongue, that wouldn't matter
If you once were in jail or you once were a man,
If your mother and your brother had "relations" with each other
And your father was connected to the Gotti clan
    I'd say, "Well, nobody's perfect"
    It's tragic but it's true
I'd say, "Hey! Hey! Shiksa goddess!
I've been waiting for someone like..."
    You, breaking the circle
    You, taking the light
    You, you are the story
    I should write
    I have to write!
If you drove an R.V., that wouldn't matter
If you like to drink blood, I think it's cute
If you've got a powerful connection to your firearm collection
I'd say, Draw a bead and shoot
I'm your Hebrew slave, at your service
Just tell me what to do
I say, "Hey hey hey hey!
    I've been waiting for someone
    I've been praying for someone
I think that I could be in love with someone
    Like You"

I'm not in to musicals as much, but this is the last of the good musicals. Original, humble, funny, thoughtful and charming. Both characters balance each other fairly and beautifully. I think musicals post 2002 are too overpowering and only stick to one subject. But of the few stage musicals I enjoy, this is one of them. Plus it was first performed in my home state of Illinois.

3 of my top 5 favourite musicals are from after 2002: The Light in the Piazza, Caroline, or Change and Next to Normal (and my favourite musical is Follies which was from the 70s so I don't have a bias to modern musicals or anything)

No offence, but if you by your own admission don't like musicals, and presumably don't spend much time seeking new ones, what position are you to say that this is the last good musical?

After watching this version, I agree. Even though I would have simply first ended the relationship rather than cheating if I were Jamie.
In the movie version though, and a few other versions, I felt like Jamie was more of a douchebag and less deserving of sympathy.
Also, after watching this, I sorta pieced together the timeline in my head, which gave me some more sympathy for Jamie’s handling of things. Realizing that Jamie’s affair and him being on his last straw emotionally happened right before he went to Ohio makes his abruptness and coldness on his visit to Kathy (even though it is her birthday) make sense. He was already emotionally checked out and for him, it was too late.
If it were earlier in their relationship, before everything happened, and he had pulled the same moves, I would have felt much less sympathy for him and just seen him as a complete douchebag.
