  • The RH25 by iRay may very well be the most versatile thermal unit around. The RH25 can be used as a handheld, helmet, standalone, or forward mounted unit.
    Thermal is an essential piece of kit for the prepared person. Skip to 8:09 to see how thermal beats night vision by far.
    In this video, Jared dives into many different specs, mounting options and comparisons. After months of use, we also have developed an understanding of the RH25 and that has led us to have an opinion on if it should belong in our kit or not.

      Do you sell an aftermarket battery pack power cable for the Iray rh25? I have the one supplied, but wondering if there is a USB on one end and the connector to the rh25 (90degree angled connector) -{instead of the LONG protruding connector). Make running a battery pack on the helmet Much easier. Thank you for your time.

    If we are talking objective specifications/capabilities here (disregarding price), then the Voodoo S is the better optic. Water proof, more versatile mounting system, better built, on board IR laser, milspec, and more back end demagnificaton so it handles optic mag better (I've compared this directly).
    Also another comment here: Yes, thermal is better than NV when it comes to dedication, however, it is inferior if you are navigating around. You cannot see through glass with uncooled LWIR systems like you can with i², you have to deal with refresh rates because it's a camera (plus the weird "jello" effect the RH25 has when your using it as an HMT), you cannot see IR light, battery life and other issues not mentioned in this video. Thermal isn't an replacement of i², but simply a compliment to it. NV is still the better option if you only had one.

    • @USMC6169
      @USMC6169 3 місяці тому

      Seriously, why would you compare a $6000 scope to a $16,500 thermal and then say you like the more $$$ one? That’s like asking someone if they’d rather have a beat up pos vs a high end Mercedes

    • @thermaltoyzngear3310
      @thermaltoyzngear3310 3 місяці тому

      simply because in this video, they comment on how this device is the "best in this category", that category being a multi-use monocular. This is objectively false and needed to be stated as the POT Voodoo S is the best in this category. They discounted this because they can't make margin on the Voodoo S like they can with selling the RH25.

      I’ve often heard folks say that traditional wisdom is to use thermal for spotting but then we need night vision for moving about (due to perceived weakness in thermal being able to see terrain). I have seen some RH25 footage where it looks like it’s providing plenty enough detail for moving about. Could you please share your thoughts based on having used both night vision and the RH25.

    So many are complaining about the price, but there’s really nothing else like this that’s so versatile, compact, durable and provides the clarity this unit does. It’s also next to impossible to find a 1x base mag with the clear 640 res digital zoom this unit provides.
    I was going to spend over 3k for a 640 res scanner in addition to my 384 res scanner, but used that money along with what I got selling my Rattler 384 scope and the difference was less than 1k.
    With this unit, I now have a high res scanner with comparable stand alone scope distance to the Rattler with less to carry around and less batteries to charge.

    Most Night Vision users pair thier setup with IR illuminators, now granted, thermal imaging does not need this, and IR lights can alert enemies especially if they have NVGs. So that's how thermal helps, its a lot less subdued. Granted, if the test had an IR illuminator like NVGS work with, then they would of found the target faster. Also, would of loved to see video footage of the unit in use (down the tube)

    I was looking at options for night ops and I have learnt a few things. Long range would require a dedicated scope with a unsophisticated reticle. Since the clip-ons are horrible with higher magnification. I just want a do it all single unit for both long and short range. There isn't that much of a difference between a clip-on and a dedicated unit in terms of price (short to mid range).
    What I'm thinking right now it that I would need a monocular white phosphor. A 556 with a LPVO and clip-on and then a 308 (or something with a longer range) with two uppers and two different scopes. This is lunacy and a pain to carry. Why don't we mount these behind the scopes?

    I'd like to see you compare the iRay units to N Vision units. I own a NOX 18mm and use it as a clip on in front of optics, on my helmet with a PanoBridge & PVS14 and as a handheld unit. I don't see the need to use it as a dedicated optic with its crosshair. since the NOX is B&W only, no color, but has a fantastic sensor BAE 12u core. my own usage has been behind a Razor 1-6 E and a G2 3-15. the NOX gives a usable image up to 6-8x. I would like to know if your own experience dovetails with my own and how you think the image quality compares in different rolls. nice video, you earned a sub from me.

      @gwman90 Рік тому +1

      It’s interesting to me that you say you’re using the NOX18 as a clip on when Nvision officially states that the NOX18 cannot be used as a clip on.

    • @spldrong
      @spldrong Рік тому +1

      I can use my NOX18 as a clip-on also, however, the impact shift is huge. You have to use the reticle in the NOX instead of the reticle in the scope. I doubt the RH25 is good enough to be used as a clip-on without impact shift.

    • @Militaristics
      @Militaristics Рік тому +1

      @@spldrong I wonder if it's a unit-by-unit issue because mine has less than 2 MOA shift from a bench for me, local range can't go prone, I have pretty bad arthritis, so my groups have opened up on me unless I go prone. maybe they can't lock down the shift so no guarantee of accuracy as a clip on?

    • @spldrong
      @spldrong Рік тому +1

      @@Militaristics my understanding is that it is very difficult to manufacture any optic to have zero shift as an In-Line. Most that guarantee zero shift are double the price of those that don't. It can also be don't with software after assembly, but I think the issue is that very few civilians are asking for this... honestly not that many military people even understand the importance of this

    I am two steps lower than a newbie when it comes to modern thermals and NV. my experience with night vision goes back to the heady days of the starscope. That was brought in and exited from service before you were born. Having said that, damn I'm old. Anyhow can you run your helmet mounted rig while engaging a target with a variable scope ? Let's say up to 10X ?

    • @elijahmontgomery4146
      @elijahmontgomery4146 Рік тому

      I’ve never used night vision with a magnified optic, just a CCO red dot. But I’m theory it should be as simple as toying with you NOD’s focus settings to play nice with your scope.

    Question about 21:11 - If you collimate it to your daytime optic and then pop it off to scan handheld... will it return to zero when you remount it? Or do you need to re-collimate it EVERY time you mount it back in front of your optic?

    • @Arkayne
      @Arkayne  9 місяців тому

      technically you can take it on and off. If you are being responsible, you should always verify zero with optics you remove. BUT you could test that theory and go forward from there accordingly. We have had no issues with the quality mounts included.

    Here's a dumb idea:
    1) buy one of those spinny hats
    2) put the thermal on your the spinner
    3) let it rotate once every second or so, like a LIDAR
    4) map the rotation to a 360° view with a Jetson Nano in your backpack
    5) wear MR googles that map the full 360° to your view
    6) run face/person detection that automatically alerts you if it finds a person and automatically points you into that direction (or just alert you when it sees something unusually hot)
    7)????
    8)profit
    I'm sure it won't be nauseating and disorienting and reveal your position
    Bonus points if you replace the cameras in your MR headset with infrared cameras run through a deep-learning denoising/night vision filter like a Google Pixel
