It's important to open the shutoff valve further, once the stove is burning well, else you'll be pumping quite often to keep pressure in the tank. By opening the shutoff valve just 1/4 (or slightly less, even), the fuel is mixed with air pressure from within the tank to help vaporize the fuel until the horizontal generator tube is hot enough to vaporize the fuel properly. This will deplete pressure from the tank rather rapidly. By opening the shutoff valve further (several turns more as instructed but not fully jammed open), the air bleed from the tank is disabled and as the generator heats (within about the 1st minute of operation), this is what you want. Then, pump the pump about 25 strokes and she won't need any more pumping till the next relight. Then control the heat using the red lever, away from the stove is max and toward the stove is minimum. If this lever doesn't control the flame, the fine wire cleaner tip is likely broken off and you'll need a new generator. Be careful with this delicate part, not to break off the wire tip if you remove the generator. Happy Camping! ;)
I found a Coleman lantern on the bottom of a river while diving. I took it home, cleaned it up,put a new glass and mantle on it,fresh fuel and it fired right up. That was thirty years ago and we atill use it. Coleman products are the absolute gold standard for camping gear.
I bouhgt mine in 1980 in Hamburg (Germany) when i was a young man of 20 years. First use was at a biker-meeeting "Elefantentreffen" in the Winter in the Alpen in Austria. We had -15°C (5 degrees F) and 1m Snow (we were so proud to be "hard boys" ) and it works phantastic. And i use it since then. The best stove ever!

Ditto, thanks for saving me the typing.
Thank you for sharing. I was gifted a 502 from my uncle and couldn’t figure out how to get it running. This video helped me very much.

Checking out a vintage video, Awesome knowledge share Papa 👍🏻❤️🔥🙏🏻🤟🏻
Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
I have several 502's and love them.. Nice thing about them is being able to dial them down to a simmer.. Unlike the military stoves.
Thanks for stopping by, My 502 is not heating like it should. I need to take it apart and clean it, I guess.
They are not the hottest stoves One of mine is like that...
Great stove, I haven't used mine for a long while , I have a stove and a lantern , I keep them for emergency. Thanks for sharing 👍

Coleman equipment always works. I have a 2 burner and a lantern that are 30+ years old. Had to replace pumps but they still work just fine.
Thanks for watching
They are well made but like a lot of things they can be cantankerous at times. I like the 2 burner models myself since they are more stable.
Love old stoves , i still use my coleman alpine epigas stove , from my brittish army days in the 90s , great channel just subbed !
Thanks for subbing and cracking my channel out Thumbs up
Good stuff 😀
Thanks for the visit

I have had a similar Coleman stove for years, still works great. I don't take it backpacking because it's heavy and bulky but it's a great camp stove!
Yes it is to big to backpack, works great on a day trip in the truck.
,,very nice stove,,thanks for sharing,,,,
I like using it to brew coffee or heat water for tea.
Never seen one of those, cool!!

Handy little stove for the garden
Yes, you would need to be careful if used inside you need a lot of ventilation for carbon monoxide.
Ok, but what type of fuel it's using?
Coleman camp fuel
@@papaspage2001 Thanks!
I love videos like this. It's like asking a trusted friend to help.
What kind of fuel does it take?
