  • The star of this show is the featured aircraft, a North American F-86D -- the all weather version of the Sabre jet -- which is shown in considerable detail. Notice the radar scope mounted on the instrument panel. "I especially like the pre-CGI aerial shots of a real Sabre slipping through the cumulus. A beautiful sight!" This film was produced by USAFE (United States Air Force, Europe) and filmed on location in Germany in the 1950s in order to cut down on costly air accidents resulting from pilot error. Seemingly trivial mistakes sometimes led to SNAFUs -- or worse. You'll follow a pilot through what should have been a routine hop, but turns into anything but. This black and white movie has a sort of 1950s film noir detective quality to it that makes it more entertaining than a lot of dry, by the book military training films. Hey, the pilot is just coming off a bender and he has a "Frau" back in Wiesbaden!
There are also some good insights into flight operations in a Nato airbase in the 1950s and flying an F-86D.

I spent my first enlistment at Stewart AFB, trouble shooting the Integrated Electronic Fuel control IEC of this plane ! I spent many hours taxing this plane to the run up area running the engine to test the engine for release to flight ! This was the most trouble some jet engine I ever worked on ! But it sure got me promoted to Staff sergeant quickly by Air Force standards ! If you develop a skill that is needed in any walk of life you will be rewarded !

The only lesson that is missing is to study your alternate aerodrome. Don’t just pick one, but know what the situation is at that field as if you are heading there. Once you have to divert the stress level already rises a bit, and if you have to aviate-navigate-communicate-andstudytheaerodromeyouareheadingto the stress level will increase pretty quickly.

In 1974 or 1975 I went to the Reno air races when Hoover was the Air Marshal. I had the opportunity to meet him and shake hands with him. His waiting queue was longer than that year’s Playboy Playmate of the Year.

I'm not sure, but there are several shots that look like the guy playing the pilot is actually flying the aircraft. If that is the case, then the star of the show was an actual Dog Sabre pilot. I'd like to know who he was. He did a great job.

It was shot & produced by the USAF in Germany. I believe all the characters are played by serving personnel.
