I've had this same lathe for 20+ yrs. Just figured out the backdrive today.. mine also came with the taper attachment which took more figuring out. Taking the thing apart and cleaning stuff and reassembling helped me figure out how the damned thing works...
I have a Sheldon UN-70-P. Looks like your machine and mine are very similar! I just got mine and haven't hooked up the VFD yet. We're gonna clean it and strip the paint before we use it for hobby machining.
@Mark A, I bought my Sheldon to be used right away but, it hasnt gone as planned. If you have seen my videos i have had to work on it and dispite what i paid im not sure if i got a good deal. I have a fair amount of wear on my ways. I am still debating on a reasonable solution. Please keep watching and thank you for subscribing. Mike - Plus8Precision
@@Plus8Precision I bought mine for my son and myself. Guy didn't know what he had. Haven't put power on it yet though (it was running when I picked it up. We're stripping the paint (probably 4 layers) and we're about ready to paint it.
At 12:38 you say it is a number 2 Morse taper ( 2MT). That may be a #2 MT live center, but it is in an adapter. The tailstock is a much larger Morse taper.
Hello Flash, You are correct the tailstock is an MT3. I wish i could post a picture with this reply. I dug through my tapers and found one clearly marked 2-3. So thanks for watching and commenting. FYI, I just wrapped up a project and will be getting back to the my old Sheldon. Mike - Plus8Precision
Hey. Thanks for the video. I'm learning to use a lathe. The shop I'm at has a similar Sheldon 11" lathe. I am having trouble engaging the power feed with the clutch. How does the clutch know work? Are you supposed to screw the knob in to get it to engage, or do you just push/pull the knob? Possibly the lathe is quite worn. It seems like sometimes I can get it to engage and other times not. Thanks
Hello mmy2109, the clutch on my sheldon you must screws it in to engage it. Mine works good enough to do threading, but its not perfect. You have to get used to screwing it in and unscrewing it to disengage it. Thanks for watching and commenting...if this helps please consider subscribing too! Mike - Plus8Precision
@@Plus8Precision Thanks for getting back to me. Okay I will try it again and report back. I recall it felt as if I was turning the knob forever before anything happened.
Hello Plasanator, my sheldon is the only sheldon lathe I have ever seen and used. If your asking about the quick change gear box the only difference I know would be the age of the lathes. Mine is an early 50's lathe based on the serial number. Thanks for watching and commenting!!! Mike - Plus8Precision

Whats the difference between your gear box with 2 lvers versus one lever type? Joe
