I have the older version at 43% for the first time yesterday. It was absolutely fantastic and for $40 it is one of the best values out there. My only regret is not trying this year's sooner. There is hardly any alcohol burn and it is super smooth. If you are a scotch drinker I would recommend keeping a bottle of this handy at all times.

My father in law bought me a bottle of this when my daughter was born. I still have it unopened. Today, my daughter celebrates her 17th birthday. Next year, I'll open and enjoy it :)

You need to buy a current bottle too. I would love to see the difference on how they formulated the OP12 17 years ago vs. Today.

Thanks be to the UA-cam algorithmic gods for recommending this one to me. A+ costumes. And this is a damn good whisky. Back when we could get it at 43%. I've got a bottle of this version open right now. Lovely stuff. Cheers, boys!

This was the first whisky I ever bought. I thought I'd throw myself in the deep end. I hated it at first but once I got through half the bottle I really started to enjoy it.

Well there are worse ones you could have started with that's for sure, but heck even really good scotches are under appreciated when you first start....

It's like AnCnoc in that it gets better and better the more you go through the bottle.

OP 12 is my go to everyday drinking scotch. I love the complexity of flavors and the briny finish is exceptional. I swear I drink enough of it I can taste the finish the next day. I will be purchasing the 17yr this weekend and I plan on buying the 21yr for my birthday coming up. Keep up the great reviews!!! 🤙🏼

Saw your best of 2018 and ended up plowing through a bunch of your videos! Great stuff, guys. I'm new and debated getting this or Dalwhinnie 15 next, and now I have no doubt in my mind!

@@Scotch4Dummies Great to watch this again with my first dram of this very whisky. Cheers!
PS. I think the nutty note you mentioned on the nose registered as sultana raisins for me, the kind my mother always kept in the kitchen cupboard. My first whisky flashback!

Old Pulteney is right up there among the best... The 12 is hard to beat for an entry level single malt. You're comparing this to Monkey Shoulder? Please... There is no contest! To me, Monkey Shoulder is a mediocre blended malt. You're much better off with the JW Green or a Great King Street Glasgow Blend from Compass Box... If you can find the Old Pulteney 17, don't hesitate!

This has been on my list for a while. Need to pull the trigger. GREAT REVIEW guys!
BTW was at a KILCHOMAN tasting last night; enjoyed MACHIR BAY, SANAIG, LOCH GORM and 100% ISLAY. They all were classic ISLAY with rich Peat and Smoky notes. This is a farm distillery as you may know and I found the Peat notes a bit sweet with something a little unique about it that I may be able to explain in a quieter environment. I enjoyed the 100% ISLAY the most for its complexity, as the name implies The Barley is grown and Malted on Islay and the whisky is distilled and aged there as well. It is bottled at 50% ABV with a lower PPM of Peat. The MACHIR BAY is aged in a combo of Oloroso Sherry but mostly ex-bourbon Barrels The SANAIG is mostly Oloroso Sherry with ex Bourbon mixed in. The LOCH GORM is totally aged in ex-Sherry. I do not remember which barrels the 100% ISLAY is aged in nor does it say on the website.

I was really disappointed with the Machir Bay. Too young, Harsh, not feeling the peat. Needs more age. They may be using younger spirits lately.

Yes!!!! Finally!!!! Old Pulteney 12 is the best bang for your buck scotch ever!!! It's $33 dollars locally for me. That's basically free as far as a good single malt. I love the brininess. It's very distinctive, robust, and unique, yet approachable. Honeyed salted caramel is the profile for OP 12 for me. Love it!!!! Great review, and I'm so excited you dummies finally got around to this one. It actually gets better further down in the bottle after it oxidizes a little.

Just received this bottle today, it took a year! $44 in Arkansas. 40% abv here? Really good, light! Not Deanston though! Really opened up with a splash of water! My Bourbon drinking friends will like this one! Cheers!

Enjoyed a glass of Aberfeldy 12 yr. old tonight; here are my impressions.
Aberfeldy 12 yr. old Highland Scottish Single Malt Whisky
    6/01/19
    40% ABV
I poured the whiskey into a jar and back to the bottle; poured a glass and also left the bottle open. The bottle and glass sat for 30 minutes to open.
COLOR: Medium Brown many legs running variously, one very slowly.
    NOSE: Sweet Honey Hard Candy
PALETTE: Floral arrival, a hint of candy sweetness in the background, with spice rising as I swirl it. There is a very light mouthfeel.
FINISH: Spicy mixed with a candy sweetness, resolving to dryness and a mouthwatering sense.
With 1 drop of spring water
NOSE: A Floral note which transitions to a rounded light honey sweet note.
PALETTE: A Lighter Floral arrival. The mouthfeel is about the same. Pepper tingles the roof of my mouth as I let it sit; yet the floral note lingers. There is a drying sense as I swirl it around.
FINISH: Very Spicy, mouthwatering resolving to a spicy dryness on my tongue.
I have enjoyed this glass. Aberfeldy 12 has been on my list for a long while and it is a pleasure to try it. I needed to get a Scottish whisky for spring and summer and this fits the bill. It has a pleasant combination of Floral and Fruit notes neat and water brings out the spiciness in the palette. A very nice warm weather dram. Recommended.
After I opened the bottle, I poured most of it into a jar and then poured it back. I did it twice. I did it with the expectation that it would open the whisky up more quickly and I think it worked.

Cracking review guys. It's alright for the price. If you fancy the 21 get it without delay. It's been discontinued and the prices have rocketed. It used to cost £100 until recently and was Mr Murrays Whisky of the Year a few moons back. The 17 is not far behind in quality and was Ralfy's Whisky of the Year recently. and can still be bought for a reasonable price. Cheers.WT

S4D, I just skipped to the 21 yr. Its fantastic. Unfortunately the 21 & 17 are being discontinued due to lack of stock. If you find a 21 yr, grab it. The 12 yr will remain and the 25 yr & 1983 will be introduced, but with a price of course. Still worth it IMO. You don't need to add water..

@@Scotch4Dummies ok…. I came back to this….The cinnamon died down a little. I don’t know what is about scotch but after you open a bottle. Then comeback to it a few months later, it’s a different experience. I’m at a 2.5 …. I definitely like it neat….goes great with a cigar, I think the cigar is masking the cinnamon that I didn’t like the first time around. But definitely much more enjoyable experience the 2nd time 😎
We need Dr. Scotch to talk about opening a bottle a coming back to it a few months later. Why is it so different???
This bottle and The Dalmore Port Woods both two different experiences the second time around.
      Interesting…

Old Pulteney is a great, the 17 is even better and the price was reasonable too. I get lots of "sea" and ocean flavors in the taste. Characters, Dr Strange, Iceman, Gambit and the non marvel superhero Zan from Wonder Twins?

OP 12 is a great entry whisky, and I've kept the bottle as I love the shape of it as it looks like distillery stills, and the bottom has a wee compass too - how great is that!
Really want to try the OP 17 as heard good things about it.

Scotch 4 Dummies Yes, it's a toss up for me between this and Springbank 10, been looking for umami in my scotch, that meaty protein flavor and all that. Anyway, I'm reminded of the really great Dungeons and Dragons sessions I've seen when you guys sit and enjoy your scotch. A game seems like it would be an interesting experiment for you guys, the idea of a serious roleplay and how you all deal with different problems would be quite fun I imagine. Anyway, great channel. thanks for the response. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
