Before Stromae released this video yesterday there was an explanation by him beforehand, with English subtitles….

He takes 4 peoples viewpoints: the three verses are first, the client (a John), the second is her pimp, the third is the policeman and the chorus is the son.
Explanation:
“Fils de joie”, Multitude ’s fourth title, tackles the subject of prostitution through the prism of various characters. For its three verses, Stromae first takes the point of view of a client, then that of a manager of prostitution networks and finally that of a policeman, rather saddened by the situation. Within the chorus, the Belgian puts himself in the shoes of a child of a prostitute supporting his mother and pleading for greater recognition and visibility.
Also seeming to support an improvement in living conditions for these women, Stromae also performs a fusion in the title of the track. Indeed, it takes up both the generalized insult in Francophonie “son of a bitch” - used in the chorus -, but also the expression “girl of joy” , synonymous with “prostitute”. This allows him to be voluntarily ameliorative of sex workers and to be able to affirm that the child in his chorus does not live with the burden of being the son of a prostitute-quite the contrary.
Prostitution and pimping, illegal in France, remain differentiated in Belgium, Stromae’s country of origin. So, non-forced prostitution is not illegal, but becomes so under duress . Pimping is therefore completely prohibited. Despite this, in 2015 there were approximately 37,000 prostitutes in France according to Statista, and between 15,000 and 23,000 prostitutes in Belgium in the same year.
He said this was his most ambitious video yet, it was a frigid day when they shot it and thanked all those amazing people who helped make this incredible video.

I'd just like to point out two things:
1) He released this on Women's Day eve, talking about the respect towards a woman who is a sex worker and a mother, which is just... The best timing ever.
2) He could have chosen the easy feminist path and just talk from the "women can do what they want and if they wanna be sex workers it's their right" standpoint, but he chose to speak from the pov of her SON. Which is just a genius way to advocate empathy even in people who cannot stop judging - she's a sex worker, but she's also someone's MOM. She's human, she gave birth, and that kid is human, and he lost his mom. Like... you may judge, but the kid might have been you. The sex worker might have been your mom, and then what?
The way he sheds some new perspective on already talked-about topics is just... it amazes me every time. But that's just what he does, he even said in an interview that it's not the topic you choose to sing about that matters, it can be something as cliché as a love song - it's rather the attitude and the "spin" that gives a fresh perspective on stuff. So simple, so effective, so Stromae.

i agree, i love the way Stromae talks about topics, he never looks at it one way, and is never bland with it, he could just say the obvious, but Stromae gets down to the detail that everyone wants to forget about, or look away from! which i love! and i appreciate that!! im glad you enjoy them!! much love!!!
I'm split on this song. Taken in a vacuum, it's a great song with a great sentiment. On the other hand, we take an often discussed topic (prostitution) with a new look (the children of prostitues) but dillute it again as a women's issue without really considering the impact of that job on the child's life. It seems like a missed chance to have a look at larger ramifications of the topic (which is done in the song, but drowned by the timeframe of release and angle of discussion generated).
Stromae could still kill it 12 years after his last release ... He is one of the greatest artists alive

Yes, the chorus is the viewpoint of the son, and the other parts shows common perspectives from society, told by a client, a pimp and a cop.
Yes, and I believe the key word for the video is ‘héros’ or hero. You see a funeral only kings or heroes for the nation get.
Notice that you don’t hear a point of view from the sex worker, and we don’t see an image of her in the video. It’s my believe this is made so it could apply to anyone as a sex worker.
Stromae is really thoughtful about the musical styles he's using : baroque harpsichord for the regal side, tarantella in the wind instruments and Brazilian funk in the beat for the popular side.

No, Stromae's mother is not a prostitute. But he tries to show the hypocrisy of the society towards women, these whores: it's easy to fuck whores ( a prostitute, or a woman that you considerher that way), these women of nothing ( that man decidedto treatwithout honor), forgetting that they are mothers, daughters, sisters, like your own mother. Men can see in theirs mothers humanity and dignity, but in other women men strip them off of this same humanity. It is a criticism of the society which plays this double game and which justifies its double action when it suits it.

In the song he really is the son of the sex worker whose funeral he's attending. Then he takes the parto of a client, a pimp, a cop... all treating her like an under-being but he takes her defense and says he will always talk of her with pride.
