46:30 "It would be really really interesting with this group though if someone someone did have to re-roll a character. That'd be an interesting dynamic." "I feel like it'd be like transferring high schools and you're like the new kid in class." *thinks back to Taryon Darington's hazing* Yeah. That actually checks out.
You need to remember that pike slit an enemies throat with the jagged edge of her mace early on in the campaign. Looting the body is fucking tame for pike.
I love watching this during the season 2 of Critical Role. Matt: "Maybe we'd start later in another part of the world." Check. Marisha: "I'd love to play Grog. Just break necks and not care about shit." Check and check. Liam: "I'd love to play Keyleth, just to get access to the whole array of spells." Double-check. These things have been brewing for so long, I love it.
17:36 Best TPK I've had? It must be the time my group was doing a space marines themed game and we had a crazed wizard who loved his random chance spell where the outcome was based on the percentage roll. So after crashing our ship, he casts the spell and rolled the outcome of "next thing the caster says to true." After much thought, he says, "we're on a new ship and in the spot we were at before we started to crash." Everything would have been fine if it wasn't for another party member saying, "Well he didn't say it had to be a space ship."

God, this QnA is full of so many forshadowings for Campaign two. [From min 55] Liam talking about wanting to be a spell caster, Marisha talking about wanting to be a reckless person, punching shit. I love it!
It's worth noting that clerics don't have a huge number of offensive damage spells, especially at the lower levels. But the ones they do have, and especially their high level offensive spells really really hit hard.
@@ToabyToastbrot He only allows it with a feat I believe. Or maybe that changed at some point. That's at least the way it is now, after the release of his own WotC campaign guide
@@dig8634 must have warcaster feat so thats when matt allows for double cast spells but up to lvl 2 on any secondary spell casted unless it bonus action spells its at his discretion. Was in both campaigns i think
I'm worried about Pike. Well, not exactly ABOUT her... About whoever goes up against her. She's got a mean streak. Well. Not exactly mean. More like "disturbing" streak. I love it.
I played an 18th lvl sorcerer once (3.5). A combination of time stop & delayed blast prompted a comment from another player to say I would be a very scary sociopath...but Pike is just on a whole other level.

We need to see the group mvp in a battle royal. If it comes to improv and creative use of spells, Scanlan is your man! Plus he would've made it so entertaining!
Ashley is so incredibly pure. "I'm a monstah!" "I don't think I like this. They're my friends!" You are wonderful and we love you. Also, Liam played this *so so so* well. This is *exactly* how a Rogue should be approaching these tactics.
Love these QA sessions! So many good insights from the players and Matt. I'm also glad the group addresses the less savory aspects of the Critter community (i.e. the rules lawyering, the KeyKey hate, and the perceived carebear DMing). Matt is completely right, we just need to chill and enjoy the D&D ride.
At 55:58 a question was brought up and it read if there was something growing between Vex and Percy? and right after that Liam step in and said why would we need to know right now when that would ruin the experience of finding out later? I couldn't have agree more to that response. Let us enjoy the ride in finding out what happens next. Personally though I could sympathize with that person wanting to know.
Antonio Nunez yea, if something is growing between the characters let it happen. as an outside party watching though, i really do want to know what that death letter said. this feels like a book to me, and if a character gets an important letter like that in a book and i don't have the opportunity to read that letter along with them i write that character off mentally. the comparison doesn't hold up entirely of course, but you should get what i mean. if pike hadn't read it immedietly the letter would have been a great secret to add to scanlan's possible death.
Keyleth is a dork and can be a bit judgmental. I don't mind so much that people dislike her as a character, it's understandable, she's got growing to do (that's the point of making a character, to see where they go and how much they grow from their adventures), but what I don't care for is the people who talk about it like Marisha is the bad person. When I look at Campaign 1, I see a group of friends playing an unprofessional game of DnD in a professional setting. I forgive a ton of the faults that come with it like technical issues (cameras going out), scheduling problems, personality clashes, etc. It's fine. It'll all get worked out, let's just have fun with it. Really hate it, though, when I see people take things so seriously, especially the rules lawyers. No one says you have to play your game a certain way, but rules lawyers *insist* you only follow the rules and, conveniently, always forget about the rule that says to be willing to ignore the rules. If the Critical Role cast *only* followed the rules to the letter, boy would this series suck.
When Matt talked about his idea of a 'soundbending' bard, I literally said "That't SO cool!!" out loud. If I didn't live alone I would've definitely gotten a few strange looks lol.
Keyleth was my favorite character when I started watching. Now I don't really have a fav b/c I love them all so much and it would be like picking a favorite child. I love all of them so much

6:23 for Q&A 1:35:30 for intro and loot crate ad 1:48:30 for BR start I don't really have the patience to highlight any real epic/noteworthy moments so here you go
i always find it so funny every time marisha goes "keyleth has a hard time killing things" because according to critrolestats she's got the highest number of kills in the party
That's because, when most of the team kills its murder. Occasionally when Keyleth kills, it's more like genocide. Case in point, the illusionary bridge in the underdark.
Maybe that's her way of trying to overcome it. =P Kill them till you're immunte to guilt. Also yell at people till you're not shy anymore. And act all high and mighty to mask your inferiority complexes... P.s. I do love Marisha. :D
52:55 Dang. Missed opportunity. I bet there are scores of critters out there that wish that Mary had been part of the original group instead of Orion... Then we'd probably still have 8 players to this day... :/
I disagree, while her character is great and so is she, I loved tiberius and to an extent orian too. It is unfortunate what happened but I wouldn't trade it away
So, character deaths. For a game like this that has so much epic history it can be hard to bring in a new character and have the new comer have any credibility, fame, or infamy. It all seems very manufactured. The problem is heroic groups operate in a kind of vacuum, which is true of any home game. What you had in the RPGA living games was the development of various groups who often had a reputation among other players. So at conventions or game days, you would mix with these people and characters and occasionally adventure with them. What I might suggest is each player make 1 to 3 potential PCs, just name, race, class, and gender (or not). Then begin giving rumors about these people in game. The PCs hear about their adventures from time to time. So if a character does meet their end, the player has the option to pick up one of these proto PCs who are a somewhat known quality. Just a thought. I definitely enjoy the series, keep up the good work.
how it should have happened mercer: how do you want to do this ashley? ashley: i can harness the power from the dawn of creation? mercer: yea ashley: i want her to experience the creation of all the starry universe. i want it to consume her mind until her brain turns to mush and runs out of her ears at the extent of the experience.
I can see why the joke about Taliesin being immortal has formed. Everyone else looks a lot older today, but Taliesin has not changed at all. I can hardly tell the difference between today-Taliesin and this past Taliesin. He looks like a freaking time traveller.
By far the worst thing about FATAL is the way it actually works, mechanically. Or rather, how it doesn't. All the other horrible stuff in it could just be shaped by a good GM and good players, the worst parts ignored or confronted. But the game mechanics? By the time you've fixed what's wrong with it, it's not FATAL any more.
Really fun seeing them pitted against each other using spells you've seen before, especially Vax as you normaly haven't seen stealth from the other side. Absolutely want to see a battle royal with everyone!
Ashley/Pike IS SO ADORABLE!!!! Her character would of never explored if it weren't for a friend in need so she went out to help and now does NOTHING BUT HELP she's the best and everyone needs some one like her at their table haha

The only annoying part of playing a cleric is that people think you're a healer even if you clearly run around in heavy armor smashing skulls and throwing bolts.
For once I actually agree with Marisha about Keyleth's worst aspect is her lack of self-confidence. This is because it relates to the part of Keyleth's character that I can't stand: the fact the she cares more about not doing the wrong thing instead of doing the right thing. Let me explain, when ever the party has to make a hard decision that effects the lives of thousands(battling K'varn or starting a rebellion in Whitestone) Keyleth is apprehensive about doing something that will result in more suffering. So she decides her best option is to do nothing. However, evil will be allowed to triumph if good men do nothing. That's my problem with Keyleth in a nutshell. She wants to help, but her confidence is so low and doubts her abilities so much, that she would rather do nothing than try. I'm not saying Keyleth would just stand there if a family was caught in a burning house, but she would if the whole world burns, she would just stand there, believing that she would only make things worse. However, that's what Vox Machina is for. They are the ones who give Keyleth the push she needs to succeed.
Marisha also wrote her to be a child prodigy who has been in intensive schooling for years, little amusement, and massive expectations. She started with VM at age 20 and reached Lv 20 around age 23. So she has massive powers even for a D&D world, a royal-adjacent background, and no life experience. And the first time she left home, she ended up with VM. She's the naive university freshman genius who ends up hanging out with superpowered badass assholes. How many 21-year-olds do you know who are confident, mature, people? I would submit that Marisha's playing her to be near-constantly intimidated by The Real World and trying to hold on to her morals while Necessity forces her to make horrible choices. Girl's on the edge of a breakdown all the time.
Just a friendly tip for those who care; when holding a spell when readying an action, the spell is actually cast, meaning you cannot choose what spell you want to release at the time of the triggering circumstance. To be nore accurate, the spell is 99% complete, with the spellcaster holding it at juuuuust the point before it would go off. Thus meaning if you take damage before the triggering event happens you have to make a concentration check.
1:09:00 Matt really got it right with that whole talk about LGBT people in his world. Making everyone straight or everyone bi are both equally akward and both scenarios come up way too often.
Plus we know that there are LGBT people in the world. Several of them aren't people you'd necessarily think just because it's not a flashing neon light above their heads - even Gilmore, on a quick glance, simply looks fashionably fabulous (or just glorious). He's treating the topic respectfully - neither denying it, pushing it, or brushing it off - which I really admire. It just "is", and thus the players are going with it the same way. Liam/Vax found himself open to reciprocating Gilmore's affection for some great roleplaying moments, but when he felt more attracted to Keyleth, he was gentle about letting Gilmore down.
I'm actually happy that another of my questions was answered during another Q&A. Mine was to Marisha at 42:18, asking why was Keyleth so hostile to Kima in the past. Overall, the questions were interesting. But during the battle royale, I thought the chat room was overly trying to backseat DM. And unfortunately, Matt was seeing the chaos in action.
29:40 I mean, you guys kinda did think about it, but Grog nipped in the bud multiple times by insisting that he not kill Kevdak in any kind of "cheap" or "cowardly" way and that he would just walk into the city in the open without sneaking around.

1:16:14 Now I'm just imagining a frustrated DM TPKing their players with a swarm of guards and mercenaries that have been hunting them, GTA-style, and, as they get cornered in some random back alley and brutally struck down, the DM just flips the double-bird to their players then stands up and walks out slowly backwards while still flipping them all off with a scowl on their face. xD
wow, I did NOT expect Pike to be victorious. I'd expected Keyleth to either Firestorm everyone, Vax to assassinate everyone, but actually not Percy. Didn't expect him to win
I almost skipped this episode to get right back into the dragon fight. Soooo glad I decided to go ahead and watch this Q&A and battle royale! Grats to the victor.
This is cool to watch after the series ended! Especially where they mention plot points that "they haven't gotten to yet" (Keyleth's back story, rerolling characters (Tary counts, and this was funny because Liam said "hey! I'm the new bard! Where are my spells?"), Pike's family).
Already finished with campaign one and am part way through campaign two and decided to cath up on the one shots and hearing them as campaign one characters made me cry
"I heard you say Blight and I should've stayed put". Nope, Vax, that is metagaming. Her character doesn't declare that she is holding an action out loud. You actually did the more fair thing here.
Honestly I don't think there was anyway he could have won. The lava was going to get him and Keyleth could have made herself immune to that if she'd thought about it.
Not necessarily. Vax saw Keyleth getting out of coverage and waiting. He knows her range spells normally relies on sight and she don't attack melee meaning she would cast something if she sees him. The meta-gaming part was he thinking she needed to touch him to cast Blight and he shouldn't came near touch range.
"I'd rather try something spectacular and fail spectacularly" is so true - the last campaign I was in ended when we (somewhat deliberately) blew up a ship full of dragonshards to kill our enemy (I'd say BBEG but it was an evil campaign, so...) and we ended up essentially planeshifting the entirety of Sharn into... space, maybe? I'm not certain, tbh. It was the most *spectacular* end to the campaign we could've imagined, I fully expected that character to die bloody, and I'm shocked we actually survived.
The music at 1:58:06 was in my playlist for an age and then got disappeared and I've not been able to find it again. Every time it plays on this show I get just a little bit more smad about it.
I definitely agree that dying spectacularly is way better than living if it makes the game a by-the-numbers experience. In my M&M game playing the lone human Batman wannabe in a group of veritable superhuman gods, sacrificing myself to destroy an indestructible robot from the inside was way more memorable than if I went with 'I'm going to find a security room or something while you guys fight this.'
I didn't see a timestamp post when scrolling down in comments so here's to future people who want to watch the episode. It's interesting to me what Liam said about Vax pushing the switch in the Briarwoods arc, because I'd thought that was something Matt had purposely set up to punish Vax's recklessness. And it was great narative wise :) But yeah, Matt would have had to have been doing some deep chessmaster stuff to have foreseen that happening, I saw a pattern where there was none! :) P.S. Loving Keyleth Marisha
Matt usually has things planned out, of course not always as any DM should always expect that their plan will not come into fruition. From what I've seen from Matt in Q&As on the show and panels, periscope, interviews, twitter, reddit, etc., he does does not really set out to punish players like some DMs I know. Matt enjoys these chances people take at being the hero and as he said in some panels (I will paraphrase "sometimes it happens and it becomes a great story to tell, but it could also be a massive fail and is still a funny story to tell". Which is one reason, for me, I enjoy this and some other shows, in which characters take big risks for big rewards as opposed to staying back playing it safe. Those are the moments for me which make tabletop rpgs great. Not judging anyone's playstyle, but that for me that is what makes it great, even seeing the massive fails. These are my opinions and observations from various interactions Matt and others have made with the community that I infer from. Others may differ.
I never got around to finishing this series years ago and after the recent show I decided to finish and catch up so I’m very surprised to find out people hated Keyleth this entire time. I love her sincerity
**Vax disappears**
*Keyleth:* Every. Damn. Time.

"It would be really really interesting with this group though if someone someone did have to re-roll a character. That'd be an interesting dynamic."
"I feel like it'd be like transferring high schools and you're like the new kid in class."
*thinks back to Taryon Darington's hazing*
Yeah. That actually checks out.
Taryon doesn’t show up for a while, so if you’ve just started the series, it’s looking forward to the taryon hazing.
"Are we allowed to loot the body?"
says the cleric.
You need to remember that pike slit an enemies throat with the jagged edge of her mace early on in the campaign. Looting the body is fucking tame for pike.
Remember the Roman Catholic Crusaders, Inquisition and Conquistadors weren't entirely but included Clerics and Paladins.
I'm currently playing a death cleric
I would literally loot the body.
I see nothing wrong with Ash's question. They can't use their stuff anymore, and you don't want your foes to use it, so...
fighting stealthy Liam is like playing battleships.
Fireball to D-5!

Why did I laugh so much at this?
From the shadows: “... naaashty Druiiiiid...”

I really thought that was her plan with Call Lightning...
“I wanna give no fucks and kill shit”
Beau.
“I wanna do long range spells and casting.”
Caleb
“ I’ve never played a cleric before.”
Caduceus.
“I’m a barbarian too!!!”
Yasha.
Adding to that, in an earlier Q&A Laura mentioned wanting to play a Tiefling!
Max Kay she did actually play an early version of jester in a one shot
When Laura says she wants to play a Tiefling Taliesin responds with "yeah, that would be really cool"
Coming to this a couple months later, watching them talk about pc death and rerolling a character after seeing the whole Mollymauk arc.
Yaski spoiler alert (kind of)
I like how Overwatch was so young at the time this came out, that Matt could just say "It's High Noon" without anyone being like "oh God".

17:36 Best TPK I've had? It must be the time my group was doing a space marines themed game and we had a crazed wizard who loved his random chance spell where the outcome was based on the percentage roll. So after crashing our ship, he casts the spell and rolled the outcome of "next thing the caster says to true." After much thought, he says, "we're on a new ship and in the spot we were at before we started to crash." Everything would have been fine if it wasn't for another party member saying, "Well he didn't say it had to be a space ship."
why would you do that? you monster XD
Mine has got to be accidentally nuking the party as sorcerer using a cure wounds scroll after half an hour in starting a new campaign XD
In that universe there were no other ships, it is not real life would have saved you guys :D
It’s wild watching this at the very start of 2023 and seeing how so many of their half hopes and “wouldn’t it be cool if…” have grown over the years.

Pike deals damage: "Sorry Percy." "This sucks!" "I don't know if I like this..."
Vax deals damage: "Hee hee hee!"

Poor Percy was totally screwed. Vax can hide and the other two can heal, not to mention Keyleth has two extra HP tanks. Big rip man
"Are you camping right now?"
"Yes, because this is in-tents!"
"I'm going to give you damage for that."
LOL
It's worth noting that clerics don't have a huge number of offensive damage spells, especially at the lower levels. But the ones they do have, and especially their high level offensive spells really really hit hard.
But can she cast inflict wounds and healing word in the same round they are both spells ?
normally you couldn't but Mercer allows it as long as one of the spells is level 2 or below
@@ToabyToastbrot He only allows it with a feat I believe. Or maybe that changed at some point. That's at least the way it is now, after the release of his own WotC campaign guide

Antonio Nuñez and it was true

I don't really have the patience to highlight any real epic/noteworthy moments so here you go
i always find it so funny every time marisha goes "keyleth has a hard time killing things" because according to critrolestats she's got the highest number of kills in the party
That's because, when most of the team kills its murder.
Occasionally when Keyleth kills, it's more like genocide. Case in point, the illusionary bridge in the underdark.
Keyleth only worries about the big choices in life, like how many duergar can she slaughter with a single spell.
Maybe that's her way of trying to overcome it. =P Kill them till you're immunte to guilt. Also yell at people till you're not shy anymore. And act all high and mighty to mask your inferiority complexes... P.s. I do love Marisha. :D

What's amazing is when they talk about their characters, they could easily be talking about themselves. Very cool insights into the game.
MONSTAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!!!
This is an amazing idea and I love it and as a (hopefully) soon-to-be GM I definitely want to do this.

CJBerdomas wow, you gave a great criticism to one of my favorite characters ever. Thank you bud
She alternates between overthinking things and being impulsive.
Break ends 1:48:27
thanks!
Break ends _____ And battle starts, more or less.
Diarmuid Balfe hes a very wise man
That look on Marisha’s face when Ashley busts out the Divine Word. Priceless
38:50
I wanna grab Ashley and hug her and protect her from the evils of this world.
I'd like to see Shawn as a guest on the show! :D
Have Shawn as a Player Controlled Villain working with Matt
plz that would be great
Shawn? He has to be Gilmore, it would be Glorious.
29:40 I mean, you guys kinda did think about it, but Grog nipped in the bud multiple times by insisting that he not kill Kevdak in any kind of "cheap" or "cowardly" way and that he would just walk into the city in the open without sneaking around.
uh oh Matt didn't know a rule from memory he loses dm points. he's now at 99 out of a 100
Jeremy Davis but he gets 2 plus for glorious hair.
17:00 Don't Stop Believin' fits Pike and Scanlan. Oh my god.
I now consider it cannon that Scanlan smells like wine and cheap perfume. I mean, it makes sense!

Incredible
It's so funny watching them talk about potential future characters after watching the second campaign :D
1:16:14 Now I'm just imagining a frustrated DM TPKing their players with a swarm of guards and mercenaries that have been hunting them, GTA-style, and, as they get cornered in some random back alley and brutally struck down, the DM just flips the double-bird to their players then stands up and walks out slowly backwards while still flipping them all off with a scowl on their face. xD
I loved this! Matt is one amazing DM and the others get such apparent joy out of playing.
wow, I did NOT expect Pike to be victorious. I'd expected Keyleth to either Firestorm everyone, Vax to assassinate everyone, but actually not Percy. Didn't expect him to win
just rewatched this, realizing that the seed for liam's second oneshot was planted here. #TheShrewScrewsYou
second? when was his first?
I almost skipped this episode to get right back into the dragon fight. Soooo glad I decided to go ahead and watch this Q&A and battle royale! Grats to the victor.
Humble beginnings. I love to see their growth.
Rewatching before the level 17 Battle Royale - Just remembered Matt worried about whether people would like McCree from Overwatch lol
Battle royale is a great way to learn your friends attacks
Thanks for the Q&A!
3:45 Yay, he finally acknowledged it! Little does he know at this point that McCree would become one of his most well-known and beloved roles. xD
goes to show: no matter the system high level martial classes got nothing on high level casters
The music at 1:58:06 was in my playlist for an age and then got disappeared and I've not been able to find it again. Every time it plays on this show I get just a little bit more smad about it.
use Shazam.
Or the critical role playlist on spotify im sure that has it
The Leapin' Lizard can you link it?

MonarchsFactory its amazing
This was so cool to watch. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't expect the first elimination, but bad rolls are bad rolls.
Holy cow! This was so much fun to watch!
Fight starts @ 1:49:43
I didn't see a timestamp post when scrolling down in comments so here's to future people who want to watch the episode. I hope you all have a wonderful day! :)

Bidet 😘
It's interesting to me what Liam said about Vax pushing the switch in the Briarwoods arc, because I'd thought that was something Matt had purposely set up to punish Vax's recklessness. And it was great narative wise :)
But yeah, Matt would have had to have been doing some deep chessmaster stuff to have foreseen that happening, I saw a pattern where there was none! :)

Well said
dubstep bard as a warforged. speakers built in and auto mix bass dropping. badass
I never got around to finishing this series years ago and after the recent show I decided to finish and catch up so I’m very surprised to find out people hated Keyleth this entire time. I love her sincerity
Man I loved the kashaw keyleth dynamic I found him such an interesting character
I kind of love this more casual, home-style gaming set up No screens, rolling in front of the players it's pretty cool and I like it a lot
As i gear up awaiting the VM Vs M9 Battle Royale...i will re watch this one for the feels
honestly, after vex died, i thought Percy would have tried to eat bad news.
