I'm a professional trombonist & played symphonic to pop. In most arrangements for band like this, there's not much room for free expression unless the conductor encourages it. Besides most traditionally trained trombonist don't get this kind of experience & exposure, most having to pick it up from gigging if that's what they want much like us "old school" players.

And all instruments, and it really does depend on how you were taught and the conductor. Listening to this I would have played that trombone solo differently and not as straight. But that's my jazz kicking in. Same with sax that phrasing I would have done different if I could. Its crazy how much difference it makes
