My Grandfather Ronald Jon Armstrong was a naval f4 pilot and went on huge and dangerous bombing runs, also landing on the USS America in pitch black skies. He was deployed into battle various times and served the nation for 25 years. He sadly died in 2005 from a brain bleed. Think makes me think about him and how he was an awesome pilot.

I salute your grandpa for his service. I honestly can’t think what he went through as a fighter pilot during the Vietnam conflict facing possibility of getting shot down by AAA, SAMs, or MiGs. Yet he knew he had a job to do and done it despite the risks. That’s a hero right there. I had a couple of uncles myself that served in Vietnam too.

It's exactly the kind of horseshit that was so common throughout the war by the people who were in charge. There's actually a term called a "McNamara Fallacy" about prioritizing quantification over results (i.e: enemy body count numbers over completed objectives) that came from and pretty much sums up the military thinking at the time that turned it into such a bureaucratic disaster. The people in charge seriously debated putting an upper limit on ammo stores based on statistical averages while screaming at each other over the cost of combat boots rounded to the cent.

During the Vietnam War, thousands of U.S. aircraft were lost to antiaircraft artillery (AAA), surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), and fighter interceptors (MiG)s. The great majority of U.S. combat losses in all areas of Southeast Asia were to AAA. The Royal Australian Air Force also flew combat and airlift missions in South Vietnam, as did the Republic of Vietnam. Among fixed-wing aircraft, more F-4 Phantoms were lost than any other type in service with any nation.
The United States lost 578 UAVs (554 over Vietnam and 24 over China).
There were about 11,835 U.S helicopters that served in the Vietnam War. The U.S records showing 5,607 helicopter losses
In total, the United States military lost in Vietnam almost 10,000 aircraft, helicopters and UAVs (3,744 planes, 5,607 helicopters and 578 UAVs).

I grew up thinking that the Phantom was a flying brick that was so cool. It was incredibly designed McDonnell Douglas did a great job. When my father retired McDonald Douglas offered him a job but he refused. He wanted to spend time with his family but that didn’t work out.

Yarnhub's animation and style has truly progressed over the past few years, while Simple History's animation has stagnated at the same level of lazy, uninspired style they pretty much always had. Yarnhub also doesn't do sponsorship ads, and Simple History will release a 5 minute video with over a minute's worth of sponsor ad. Simple History does have a lot of interesting topics though, and they do tell some stories well.

Imagine you are riding a car and suddenly you see someone injured from an accident and you decide to help and take him to the hospital
And after they have recovered they put the blame on you
Man it will be so stupid thing
Pardo also suffered from the same thing but thankfully his actions got recognition

now, imagine if you are driving a car that isnt your own, lend to you for your service, with the same applying to the other Car
The Car is not easly replaced and will likely take a year or more to be replaced if at all.
Now imagine the car is something you need a lot of training driving, and you bringing the other person to the hospital had the potential of killing you.....
from a military perspective, this was the right thing, to consider charging them, the military dosnt need heros, it needs people who carry out orders(as long as they are legaly valid)
Moraly the pilot was right, tacticaly this could very well have cost more lives down the line do to unavailable air support later.
The pilot basicly changed a "1 plane and crew safely returning with 1 plane and crew crashing, and possibly dying or being captured" scenario to "2 planes certainly lost, with no guarantee of any of the pilots surviving either" scenario

He’s not the only pilot to used his plane to maneuver another plane to stay in the air
During the Korean war in 1952, James Robinson Risner was on an escort mission to escort F-84 thunderjets on a bombing run in China near the Yalu river
After the mission was completed, they made their way home. On the return flight, Risner's wingman, 1st Lt. Joseph Logan, was struck in his fuel tanks by anti-aircraft fire over Antung. In an effort to help him reach Kimpo, Risner attempted to push Logan's aircraft by having him shut down his engine and inserting the nose of his own jet into the tailpipe of Logan's, an unprecedented and untried maneuver. The object of the maneuver was to push Logan's aircraft to the island of Cho Do off the North Korean coast, where the Air Force maintained a helicopter rescue detachment. Jet fuel and hydraulic fluid spewed out from the damaged Sabre onto Risner's canopy, obscuring his vision, and turbulence kept separating the two jets. Risner was able to re-establish contact and guide the powerless plane out over the sea until fluids threatened to stall his own engine. Near Cho Do, Logan bailed out after calling to Risner, "I'll see you at the base tonight." Although Logan came down close to shore and was a strong swimmer, he became entangled in his parachute shrouds and drowned. Risner shut down his own engine in an attempt to save fuel, but eventually his engine flamed out and he glided to a deadstick landing at Kimpo.
The maneuver made by Pardo during the Vietnam war is known as Pardo’s push
The history channel series, dogfights, later depicted this aviation maneuver in the episode MIG alley used by Risner

Funny story, my uncle actually knows the guy who pushed his friend with his jet and he settled in the San Jose area, and he donated a fishing boat to the veterans association and they take veterans fishing in Monterey bay for free. Another funny story is as they were taking the boat back to moss landing near Monterey in CA it lost power in high seas and they thought they would lose it, but they got it to moss landing safely somehow.

I'm so glad this happened. My uncle was in the back seat of the lead plane. He probably wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for the push. I remember hearing that story back when I was 5 or so years old at grandma's house. The first of many times. He told me that after using the windshield, Pardo figured out how to push it with one the metal protrusions on the nose of the fighter. My uncle Bob also sustained permanent back injuries from the ejection seat.
