He had help. He was only 25 when the Yankees won the 4 th title. Bunch of veteran superstars on those teams. He was capt since 2003. And with the huge payroll advantage still only won once. Not a great job captain.

Another reason he's a Yankees legend: His #2 was the last single digit number to be retired. The others: Billy Martin(1), Babe Ruth(3), Lou Gehrig(4), Joe DiMaggio(5), Joe Torre(6), Mickey Mantle(7), Yogi Berra(8), Bill Dickey(8), Roger Maris(9). That is absolutely Yankees legend status.

He has the best memory of anyone I've ever seen, they say Greg Maddox can remember signing an autograph in 1997 today, he wouldn't sign for the same person twice, could be bullshit, Jeter signed 16 baseball cards for me in Savannah Ga when he was 17, he played for the Greensboro Hornets, from what I've heard, he would remember me today, I sure wish I could ask him, he was by far the nicest kid on Earth, he didn't have to, he stood and talked to me for a good 12 to 15 minutes, if I live to be a 100, I'll never forget it, THE CAPTAIN

DJ is a great leader and legend. Let's also recognize that, in a league famous for it's lack of parity, he happened to be on a franchise that was absolutely committed to winning, paying for all the talent int he world, etc, in order to be competitive every year. He just was the face of it. Let's put it this way, if we put A-Rod on the yankees in 1995, he'd probably have a fistful of rings too.

    Just what we needed:
    another retired Yankee that
    we never stop hearing about.
What is it about the Yankees
that they must always be the
    subject of so much hype.
Derek Jeter was a very good
    ballplayer who played a very
long time on some very good
teams. But he was not all that
    special -
    Average fielder.
    Average speed.
    Average power.

Yes he had a few cool plays in the playoffs that people remember but if your in the playoffs every year because of the team your on its bound to happen. 98 percent of the team he's cheering on someone else that did something great in the playoffs if you look back,, roles players,, and the other every day players. Stats r never the full story. Look at bonds and trout. Never won. Id take a hit over A strikeout any day. Arod never won without jeter. While intangibles shouldnt way that much on winning, at the pro level it does bc when u play with the best, u have to have the mental strength and confidence. Bonds stats was the value of 5 players, but jeter team mentality rubs off up and down the 40 man roster. Asking for max contract, putting blame via the media, all affects how others play. Still with that said. Jeters numbers in the playoffs was no slouch. More hrs than trout and bonds combined. Theres a reason why other baseball players say good things about Jeter.
