Really amazing thanks for walking us through this! It all made perfect sense and works for me but I wanted to know, how would you get the zscale attribute to drive the color? So the higher (or lower) the extrusion would give you different colors. I'm in Redshift and tried using Color User Data set to "zscale" and it just rendered out as black.

Someone gave me a tip, you need to promote the attribute to vertex and then it works!
Yes just promote them to vertex or point level. Or you can work with a point extrusion.
