We had an issue similar to this on the Pinfari 64 m coaster we had at the park I worked at. The front upstop roller on the left front truck set of the car came up on top of the rail in the last curve before the station. In our situation though the ride was shut down until we could figure the problem and have it corrected. What we found was that the outside rail on the last curve had egged over time as was not round in that section any longer. We replaced the rail in accordance with Pinfari's instructions (also all track was meticulously checked to see if any other spots were egged). Pinfari sent out notices for all operators to check for the wear like we experienced. Our coaster ran at that park with no other incidents for another 7 years until the park closed and all rides were auctioned off. It is still running. It was sold to Celebration City then a few other parks if I remember correctly. Last I heard it was at an FEC and was called the Big O but I think it has been relocated since then.
Fantastic example of what should have been done here!
The ride is currently SBNO at Lakeside Amusement Park in Denver.
@@CoasterCollege I totally agree.
@@appalachianenthusiast9499 Thank you for that information.
Got that too, but on a Big Apple... My mistake, didn't brake enough
everyone gangster until "On [date], [name of ride] was operating normally..."
I love that it's becoming a catch phrase lmao
Everyone gangster until a new catch phrase shows up.
☝️Presenting to the emergency room☝️
It annoys when he says that, because most of the time the ride obviously was not operating normally. If it was operating normally, the accident would not have happened.
@@investor.zit was operating normally until the accident occurred...
”Roller coasters dont usually derail” well i would hope so
It's always the old 1970s American or cheap Chinese knockoff coasters having freak accidents. The Smiler several years back was human error, not the coaster.
@@criticalcerebral yeah
@@criticalcerebral This particular coaster is from Italy. I wonder how their track record is.
i cant believe the wheels had derailed in the past and they continued to run the ride as is. they were juggling with peoples lives. its a miracle the riders werent fatally injured, but i hope their injuries werent long withstanding. falling 17 feet is terrifying. no one should board a roller coaster and fear for their lives :(
It's Flori-duh. I lived there for a long time, and the government will always support business, and defer to them: "You wanna run your roller-coaster with wheels half off the track? Sure, it's okay by us"! My condo passed inspection by the City of Miami, and it was held together in places with tape - literally. Hurricane Andrew destroyed it in mere minutes.
The fact they covered up the poor performance of the ride just nailed it in for me. That's awful. Just shut down the ride while you get more breaks if you didn't want to buy them all at once. Great video! I loved the information! But massive yikes
They could have even not disable some of the mechanical brakes and run the brake system as a hybrid to keep the coaster to its designed speed, but they didn't do even that.
I'm glad that nobody was killed in the crash. I do not understand how a park could be so careless as to let a coaster do what the manufacturer said it should never be allowed to do. Those trim brakes are there for a reason, and the park should not have disabled them at all.
Also, I admire your honesty about a mistake you made years ago, in a video that most people probably don't remember the contents of (I forgot that it even existed, though the coaster did seem familiar for some reason).
How..how can a park be so irresponsible? This was so bad and my heart goes out to those who survived the accident
Fantastic question, it's really crazy how bad this got.
Kinda goes hand in hand with the general rule that bigger parks (and by proxy bigger rides) are usually safer. Thank god that negligence to this extend is still the exception, but strange accidents do still happen at smaller locations (Parc Saint-Paul in France has had multiple, and the story of their Formula 1 coaster is uh... Interesting? By lack of a better word)
@@AVdE10000 also rides that are newer are generally safer. Not saying that all old rides are below a reasonable standard of safety, they're just more likely to have less features and have had more opportunities to be neglected
If the park was in financial trouble, as according to the video, they probably didn't have the financial wherewithal to properly modify or repair the ride properly to begin with. The shortcuts, ignoring of the problems, and covering up other problems was a desperation move to keep a potential moneymaking ride active when it should have been shut down and repaired properly.
@@madeliner1682also newer rides at sketchier parks will probably have more attention because more people will try to ride it and they don’t want down time or for all their marketing for the new ride to go to waste because an accident happened or the ride has to shut down for safety.
Dude. I rode it the night before it crashed with my boyfriend. To counterbalance our ride they had cinderblocks in the back 2 cars and it had to be pushed to start. And he wasn't kidding about over speed, at times we felt we were gonna fly out of our seat. Sketchy-sketch.
Very sketchy
Pushing to start them is not uncommon with this particular model, especially the traveling versions. That said, the counterbalancing is certainly not normal.
It’s insane they had every chance to try to fix it, but refused.
Some would say it's your fault...
😂
@@dextermorgan1 - I wanna say "roasted by your lettuce" but it wasn't much of a roast
I'm glad everyone survived. I guess I never realized until I started watching coaster channels that rides get sold off just like used cars
Oh my God, how can a park be so irresponsible when they're putting people's lives at risk
Because money. That's why.

@@SaintAnix. Too bad they didn't have the foresight to realize that skipping maintenance was a short-term gain, long-term loss.
@@TimothyChapman well, the park was in financial difficulties so short term gains was exactly what they wanted.
This coaster operated at Del Grosso Amusement park (formerly Blands Park) from 1987 to 2003 under the name "Zyklon." So it was at that location for 16 years. It was my favorite ride at that park and rode it more times than I can count as I lived only 30 minutes from it. This is the coaster that sparked my love of roller coasters. It's really saddening to know that instead of making modifications to actually make the rider safer, that they took shortcuts and intentionally ignored warning signs, and worse yet, covered them up.
I love the scientific, non sensationalized way you cover these topics. I am always delighted when a new video of yours comes out!
Some version of "On the day in question the ride was functioning normally." needs to be on a shirt
And this is why corporate executives need to be personally criminally and civilly liable for the actions, or inactions, of their company. They're not going to care until their crimes effect them.
Yup. There's a specific roller coaster accident this channel covered where a politician who was continuously working to dismantle the rules and regulations in Kansas for amusement park rides. But then, his son got into a roller coaster accident and all of a sudden, guess who's a champion for regulation of amusement park rides?? Yup, the asshole politician
It seems most videos covering ride accidents involve fatalities. It's actually kinda refreshing to see something that caused injury, but all escaped serious injury.
If there is anyone doubting the safety of coasters in these comments, I’ll have you know that while I worked at Michigan’s Adventure (operated by Cedar Fair) we would shut down Shivering Timbers, the park’s main attraction, if even just the electro-magnet that holds the exit gate shut broke. If you’re going somewhere established, your safety is taken very seriously.
So basically don't go on rides at the beach or at local fairs?
@@blueflare3848 Honestly yeah. At the very least observe the operations of those attractions and make a decision based on that, but any chain is going to have pretty strict regulations.
I love Michigan’s Adventure!
@@blueflare3848 I wouldn’t go so far as to swear off fairground rides altogether, just keep an eye on the operations before you ride. If it eases your mind, accidents caused by poor maintenance have caused state laws to go into effect that mandate rigorous inspection of traveling rides before they can be assembled and operated. 9 times out of 10, you’ll be fine.
As soon as I saw this coaster I recognized it. It spent a few years at my favorite childhood park. It was never a ride I enjoyed going on, and knowing the design issues that might explain why, but the image of the coaster has nostalgic memories because it was the backdrop of many happy days at the park. I'm sorry to hear that people got hurt on it, there is no excuse for not maintaining rides. I hope that the victims have recovered and my heart goes out to them for this horrible experience.
the fact that they saw the previous gashes and just PAINTED OVER THEM baffles me. this was so incredibly avoidable.
When I was a kid, these "accidents waiting to happen" were all the rage up and down the NJ coast boardwalks ... if you neglect maintenance ... this will always be the outcome! Shame on them for a buck!
I walked by this ride on the Daytona Beach boardwalk in late May of 2018. Less than a month before the derailment. This thing looked like an accident waiting to happen, and I remember making a comment to the person I was with about how sketchy it looked. I think I remember there being some yellow caution tape around the coaster or the entrance of the park, I remember thinking what a bad sign it looked like. But it was a long time ago so the details are fuzzy.
After hearing about how much crap they covered up just to pass an inspection, it makes me feel so good that I had rode this coaster numerous times before the accident took place 😬
Ohhhhh.... That's why you made us guess the cause of the accident days before uploading this video! You were giving us a taste of what you had to go through 3 years ago, when images were all you had. Cool social experiment.
As somebody who lives near Daytona and has been to the boardwalk many many times I wouldn't touch any of the rides there. I dont trust fair level rides as it is but this one was right by the ocean. When it went up I called it that it was going to have issues. It didn't even look safe. Im glad I never rode it tbh.
Have you considered a collaboration with the _Well, There's Your Problem_ podcast? They cover engineering disasters and I've been nagging them to do a podcast on coaster disasters.
I wouldn't have a problem with joining them, as long as it's not during my busy time of year.
@@SixArmedSweater considering that one of the three main podcasters (November) is trans, and that Liam deliberately pins transphobic comments on the videos _specifically_ so everyone can make fun of them, and that they haven't mentioned thunderf00t in any of their episodes, and that they start every episode with a pronoun check, I'm going to call bullshit on this.
EDIT: in fact, the only link I could find between thunderf00t and WTYP is that Rocz once mentioned him on his own channel, during a video on how dumb Elon Musk's Loop is. During the actual episode on the Las Vegas Loop, they don't mention him at all.
EDIT: November has changed her name since I made this comment. I have updated it accordingly.
@@alaeriia01 That’s what prompted me saying that. Glad to hear I was wrong.
I rode it on its opening month. I guess it was a good thing I shared a train with only 2 other people. I remember it slammed into that FBR. The rest of the park was a little scary. They had the rustiest ferris wheel Ive ever seen. It seems only fitting Daytona would have such a subpar coaster when it did finally get one. Maybe the daytona speedway will build a cotaland competitor and we can have a real amusement park!
I would hope so! While Universal is building a new park but Florida does need a good coaster park that doesn't focus on themeing or animals (as much as I love Islands Of Adventure)! Maybe either in Daytona Beach or Jacksonville!
I lived near daytona at the time and this boardwalk was always known by the locals to be really shady so the only people that would go were usually spring breakers
5:01
Painted over without even sanding it, so they did it REALLY cheap.
Also all that rust in the track-fit photo, yikes.
it was literally about 200 to 300 feet away from the ocean, the constant salt spray makes everything rust no mater what you do. If they hadnt kept repainting it it would have probably collapsed from all the rust damage
Kudos for coming back to set the record straight after the final report was released... most people would just gloss over their earlier video & how they'd made a few incorrect guess-timations, so bravo 👏
I think it's also worth pointing out how varied the re-certification of amusement rides is. I'm always astonished how often rides are inspected & approved by people with little experience in amusement rides or _any_ similarly engineered structures. I get that it's a niche industry, but it's no excuse for putting your city/state's stamp-of-approval on a ride that a 1st year engineering student would have questions about.
The park was clearly negligent, however the ride had been repeatedly re-certified for operation at that park.... the authorities are doing the community & reputable ride operators out there a disservice by dodging any of the responsibility for an unsafe coaster being allowed to operate.
One of my favorite UA-cam series! Happy to have it back! I know you only touch on amusement parks and specifically rollercoasters. But will you ever touch of the legalities, responsiblities and liabilities of New Jersey's water park Action Park or the decapitation of Caleb Schwab on the Verruckt water slide in Kansas?
He did the Ohio State Fair Fireball before so I don't see why he wouldn't touch on Action Park or Verruckt unless he simply doesn't want to
Water rides is something I am slowly getting more experience with and feeling more comfortable talking about. Accidents like that are not off the table but they are also not near the top of my list for accidents to cover.
Class Action Park-it now Mountain Creek
I feel like the whole Action Park story has been told so many times as it is.
@@CoasterCollege awesome im super excited!
really glad you’ve dropped the background noise when speaking in more recent videos. good choice. not a bad sound, i like the sound, very retro, just not when you’re speaking, or maybe just not so loud. but yeah, hasn’t seemed like a noticeable occurrence in any of the more current videos i’ve watched. keep up the good work! i like hearing these stories with the input of someone with a bit of background knowledge on the subject being discussed. 👌
Glad to finally see this one man. As always love from Japan!
Thanks for watching!
Rode this ride several times. The last time I rode it if felt unsafe and different. I belive we where acrually headed down in a week and I'm a coaster fanatic and my kids were going to be just tall enough. SCARY TO THINK.
When Sandblaster was taken down it kinda broke my heart as I'm an Arizonian where this ride once resided at Legend City with sadly no longer exists. Upon moving to Florida I discovered this ride in Daytona Beach and I'm thankful was able to ride before it's unfortunate demise. Truely sad considering it's age and history what became of it especially seeing a story of another roller coaster (Elvis's favorite) went through similar past with many relocations.
I remember i wanted to ride this coaster so badly when i was younger, but my parents never trusted the rides at that boardwalk so i wouldnt ever go. Thank god i didn't 🥲
I live really close to this area. I heard about it on the news almost as soon as it happened but completely forgot about it, thanks for the video it’s really interesting to see what happened in depth
Still waiting on the glenwood accident. This video was great, though!

You have really grown as a video essayist. Keep up the good wotk.
these videos don’t make me scared of roller coasters.
they make me much more selective on which parks i will attend and trust my safety with and give my money to.
Can you do a video on the Orbiter rides? I always found that one super fun. Your content always helps ease me before fairs.
Same as it is with almost all coaster accidents: Improper maintenance and negligent ride operations.
Or guests breaking rules.
I remember hearing about this one. There was no reason for that accident smh. Great video
i remember this coaster being my first and going on it over and over again. i was down the road when this happened
Oh man. Nothing quite like binging these videos and then I see a coaster that is a match for one in a park in my hometown. Lets hope the Galaxi is faring better on maintenance...
Update: I went down a rabbit hole. There are no less than 3 models of this coaster from two different Italian companies for over a hundred of this same coaster across the world. The one I know was not Pinfari but its even older... At least there's been no catastrophies like this.
Dude no way! I rid this coaster only a few years prior, never new an accident happened on it. Scary
TLC must be given to any piece of machinery no matter how simple or complex. It is especially critical as the model ages & ride manufacture defunct. $$$ should never be held over human safety. BTW the "flanged wheels" for that model acts as road + guide wheels. True If kept in proper operating range with up stop wheels (properly maintained for wear) would be just fine as long as the ride was 'trimmed' in the proper places.
When I saw this video I froze
I rode this ride like a day or two before this happened. When we where on my brother aways joked and said that the ride was really ruff.I didn’t know this happened and was shocked.
We were there on vacation there that day, we had debated going on this ride. We watched the entire rescue from our hotel room. Glad no one was seriously injured. Scary
2:00 The primary exception to this rule is the Millennium Flyer trains by Great Coasters International; these dispense with the side friction wheels by having flanged road wheels like those of an actual train.
You should make one about that swinging arm coaster that snapped in half two years ago
I'm super bad with names but
There can't be that many incidents like that
Be really interesting to hear your explanation of just how differently that park was run and all
I believe he has! It's the Ohio State Fair Fireball.
@@duelbraids nah it was in some odd country with lots of corruption and little regulation
@@littleloner1159 ah, then i'm unfamiliar with it. though, the fireball was a swinging arm coaster that snapped due to water damage, so there's at least two incidents, which is two more than there should be.
@@duelbraids yeah I was kinda hoping that happened once and then never again
Rollercoaster safety should def be handled better on an international level
You sure put together great videos!
Thank you!
I suspect that Boardwalk carried on with the out-of-spec operation because of a perception that the higher speed made the coaster more enticing
This was the very first rollercoaster I ever rode and had no idea this ever happened, was always wondering what happened to it but after this I'm glad it's gone

Hi ! Can you investigate the accident that happened on a, (I believe) Pinfari coaster at a park in Teheran, (or it could have been in Isfahan) in Iran, around August 2001 ? I believe a whole car came off the track and plunged to the ground. Eight people died. Thanks. It would be interesting to know exactly what happened. It didn't really make the western press at the time.
I'm sorry.... They ran the coaster even with the wheels derailing in the past!?. That's like driving your car even though the lug nuts keep coming off, like "Oh lemme just tighten these lug nuts again to make sure the wheel doesn't fly off down I-10 at 60MPH, **Tightens lug nuts** there we go, they might be a couple centimeters too small but they should be fine now".
Damn, I live in the area and I never heard about this. Crazy.
You explained this well.
We had a wooden roller coaster at Geauga Lake called the Big Dipper and that coaster always flew up off the tracks and came slamming down after the first hill bcuz it was fast af. It was the norm for it and it was just the way it was. Lol. Thankfully never any injuries or death.
I was on this ride when it was at Blands park/now Del Grosso Park , I liked it there at this point nothing really happened there except it kinda got costly and now a twisted mouse coaster is in the same area. The coaster was named the Zyklon at the time
I rode it once when it was at Bland's Park. My maternal grandmother lived in Tyrone, PA and we would go out to visit her every summer. Sometimes my parents would take us to Bland's Park while we were out there.
I rode this coaster when it was at Six Flags over Georgia. It was a ruff ride
I survived Sand Blaster! Mouse Trap's safety stats definitely are better than Sand Blaster's were, but I heard it it has significant airtime as well; especially in the back seat (just like Sand Blaster).
I love this channel.
Amazing job as always, keep up the good work
I would love to see a video on the Dreamworld Australia accident, or the Luna Park Sydney Ghost Train accident
Hey, the park I go to (Lakeside in Lakeside, CO) is getting one of this ride's sister rides, the Zyklon/Big Ohhh! coaster!!!
I haven't been to Lakeside in years. It's one beautiful park at night with its many colored neon lights! Heard they aren't even running the old Cyclone coaster this year (2022)! But Lakeside was always the amusement park we went to! Mom would pack a picnic supper which we would eat at Berkley Park just across from Lakeside. Lots of memories!

Had no idea any of this happened. I accidentally parked right in front of where it would’ve happened last time I was in Daytona, but this was just in November 2021. I actually moved my car though cause it was a weeknight and not many around and the street looked abandoned. There was lots of homeless around there too.
i have been on a exact clone at the florida strawberry festival as of now it is still running and seeing this video is unsettling.
Almost every single accident involving roller coasters are caused by poor decisions, not poor construction.
Dang I rode this at western Playland in El paso texas
You should do the raging river at Adventureland in Iowa
it's always infinitely depressing to learn about cases like these where the people who were responsible for keeping a ride safe weren't just overlooking safety issues, but were actively covering them up for the sake of profit. this industry is filled with people who are passionate about amusement rides & rollercoasters, who are dedicated to making them as overwhelmingly safe as they are, but cases like this pop up once in a while and the general public's confidence in the industry takes a big hit.
to be honest, i find it difficult myself to convince myself of the safety of rides that are operated outside of large, "official" theme parks (e.g. rides at travelling fairs, on piers, etc.) because i do feel like there's more of a pattern with ride operators & maintenance workers ignoring potential safety issues in these sorts of places. i know that riding a rollercoaster on a pier will still be statistically way safer than just getting into a car, for example, but i just don't see the same level of engagement from ride operators outside of actual theme parks overall. i'm not sure if there's a lot of difference in terms of regulation & training (and i know it will be different all over the world, differences here in the uk won't be the same everywhere) but it certainly feels that way sometimes.
anyway, great video as always. it seems counterintuitive to a lot of people i mention it to, but this series is genuinely really helpful for anyone who worries about ride safety. not just the information itself, but the calm & objective way you present it, plus your firsthand experience with the industry.
I have a question so you have e said that theme parks are so safe you have a higher chance of getting in an accident on the road then a theme park but from what I have seen you never said any thing about festivals or carnivals cuz they only have a few days to a week to put stuff up but theme parks have years to put the stuff up ever since I thought about that I have not really been to carnivals so are carnivals “safe” cuz I think they are death traps
Shame on these owners/managers!
This company should get shutdown for spending the time to cover up the safety wheels escaping instead of fixing it
Literally the longer you watch the worse it gets. So irresponsible on the park’s part. Glad everyone made it out though!
Will u do a what really happened on el toro, shivering timbers, and ttd
All of those are too recent to have good information on right now, outside of rumors. And TTD cannot be covered by me for political reasons.
Ok I understand
It seems a lot of these accidents occur because parks are trying to coverup issues so they don't have to pay for extra maintenance. I wonder if there was a way to fix this issue because as greedy as it is, it seems to be human nature to sacrifice safety for money.
Could there be a maintenance industry that fixes mistakes for little cost to the amusement park or something? Or government sanctioned maintenance organization? But I guess there are so few accidents like these that cars, guns, etc are the bigger issues.
I definitely wouldn't be willing to get on a coaster that didn't have the standard tri-wheel setup.
Don't say that. Have you ever ridden Gemini at Cedar Point, or the older Arrow Dynamics mine train coasters? None of them have up-stop wheels. they use an up-stop plate instead.
As long as the ride is well maintained, it's not a problem at all. These rides were designed with that wheel setup in mind, and some gentler rides built today still use them. It's a perfectly safe design

@@CoasterCollege thats fair, information on it is scarce
This ride was relocated so much but it didnt crash when it was the only permanent coaster in my state pog
Honestly, any coaster that has a possibility of lifting off the track should have a 3 part wheel assembly
Sand blaster was a coaster designed to fail, according to another video I watched it may have been a “cursed coaster” because all the parks that owned it before this one shut down. Then ultimately this happened because of age of the ride, it was a old rusty ride that shouldn’t have been moved so much without proper care.
