Personally for me, buying a whole new machine isn't considered as an upgrade. Spending another thousand dollars just to buy the same machine with bigger capacity is just utterly ridiculous.
I know it's because of ARM architecture that makes the RAM is unupgradable. But the storage? The SSD is technically upgradable, yet Apple managed to find a way to make it not upgradable by making it soldered on the motherboard. So if your SSD is dead, so does your Macbook. Yeah it still can be repaired but, it's not practical
The situation is a little bit better for Mac Studio because you can still replace the NAND Chip, but still you can't upgrade because Apple doesn't put the controller for different SSD size.
This issue is what makes me hate Apple as a company. You're locked in, you have no freedom, and what makes it worse? the other company will just follow what Apple's doing.
Not only Apple users being milked, but non-Apple users too. As consumer, we are doomed

Apple uses swap to maximise RAM potential. So, having the SSD soldered is essential for speed and latency. Also, all smartphones are ARM and have soldered RAM; welcome to the 21st century. If you want more RAM, buy it when you purchase your laptop!

I got my previous phone, Samsung A20s 2020, and I have been using that till January 2024, when i upgraded to S23 Ultra. Luckily i was able to get a stock brand new from Samsung at about 1099USD. So enjoying the snapdragon gen 2 for galaxy and telephoto lenses.

I am baffled just as you are. My recent transition to the apple ecosystem the next purchase will be a MacBook pro but am turned off on the price vs performance and specs comparison to windows for value. I have a question on the software you’re using for video rendering your videos that keeps you captivated with MacBooks 💻 are you using Final cut?

Yes sir, I am using Final Cut to edit all my video. But for social media clips, i just use CapCut since it's free. Thanks for tuning in sir!!!!

I used an iMac in 2001 for iMovie with 64 MB of memory. It had trouble with some transitions and effects until I upgraded to the maximum 1 GB of memory. In 95% of the UA-cam videos, UA-camrs complain about the 8 GB for the minimum Macs but run fine with 32 GB of ram. I primary work with virtual machines running Linux and Windows on my Mac and I think 32 GB is not acceptable in 2024. I know of 3 people that don't do video editing on their Macs and 8 GB is fine for running Microsoft Word, watching UA-cam, Email, and playing Apple Arcade type games. They have different Macs and different specs for different people. What is perfectly fine for video editing is unacceptable for someone like me.

The truth is as long as they can get away with it, they will always scam people with Ram AND ssd upgrades, i really love their new machines, amazing performance and battery life but i don't like MacOS that much (still better choice than windows). The 8gb in a pro model in 2024 is unacceptable, the minimum should be like 18gb or possibly 24gb with that ludicrous price tag because that ram is **shared** between the cpu and gpu. So i can get an asus laptop with a ryzen 9 7940hs, 16gb of ram and an rtx 4060 with 8gb dedicated gpu memory, 1tb Gen4 ssd for 1200$, this laptop has also upgradable ram and storage so its more future proof, getting a laptop with the same performance from apple would cost you at least 2000$ although they have better screens and battery life but c'mon man, 8gb ? seriously ?

The truth is, until incompetens users are decide things, they will always be guilty.. because you can't notify the transfer speed differences, they are there.. and if you compare the HDD prices with SSD price, you also can cry, they are not in the same price range, and even the upgrade is more expensive for SSD.. Oh you didn't noticed that, you need a laptop with 8 DDR5 RAM slots, and with PCIe 8.0 x16 slot for GPU to reach the 400GB/s speed between CPU and GPU.. until you compare them based on their speed, you simply compare the 32GB/s limit against the 400GB/s.. (same like he 150MB/s HDD against the 2100MB/s SSD.. do they have the same prince range..?)

I can’t really afford to buy anything except the base models right now. That’s why I got the M2 air base model with 8gb and 256gb. However, I also know my workflow is VERY light. The most demanding task I do is play some mobile games/occasional 1080p video editing. That’s it. It has worked amazing for most of my work even with 8gb of ram, but I do agree it’s a scam that upgrades cost that much. I definitely would have upgraded if 16gb of ram was an additional $50 or even $100, but $200 is just too much.

I completely agree. 200$ is too much and i am glad the base model fits your overall needs.Cheers and thanks for stopping by

I look at it from a different perspective that will make you understand demand-side economics. I look at the equilibrium model, the 512GB/16GB, where Windows is mainly centred, and then I compare prices with Macs and Windows. All premium ultrabooks are unsurprisingly around £1500-1600 before discounts. So, an unbiased person would say Apple charges the going rate for 16GB/512GB. This destroys the argument about Apple upgrade prices because Apple offers discounts if you trade down, so £400 if you buy half the SSD and RAM amount. Considering the claim that RAM and storage costs Apple a lot less, it is apparent that Apple is subsidizing the downgrades to boost demand. Not only is this sensible economics, but it is also consumer-friendly as it opens up MB Air to people who cannot afford the equilibrium price of £1500+.
Apple is not a charity, so the subsidies are compensated by the extra cost of upgrading above the equilibrium configuration. However, that is generally acceptable as Apple favours those with less disposable income over the pro market, which typically can afford it. A balance of a business needing to work for its shareholders and a consumer-friendly model within the premium ultrabook sector.
Of course, the detractors won't admit that this is precisely what Windows OEMs do, as it undervalues their agenda. But guess what? MS has an SP10 and Surface Laptop 10 that starts at £1200 for 8GB/256GB; Dell sells an XPS 14 with Core Ultra 5 and 8GB. I suppose comments and reviewers see Apple as an easy target as Windows has a monopoly (Apple only has 8% of the PC market share); it is easy to kick the underdog to please the crowd!

Good video overall but 6:33 were u sarcastic? Air only is fanless which is a downside from Pro, if we are talking performance-wise and not speakers/120hz/etc.
And price wise Apple is a famous brand, they'll never give discounts to the buyers, they rather have u buying ever 1-2 year instead of future-proof their users like u said.
Even though like u said in ur case the only issue was the RAM, I'm not sure if 64GB existed in M1 non-pro chip, but if u had bought ur very first laptop with 64GB Ram M1 non-pro non-max u'd have been fine in ur use-cases?
I think ur case is also very specific as 4:15 u said u hit 40GB-55GB of RAM, I think for most other coders 24GB will be what is for you 64GB, and for the rest a base model 16GB will be just as fine with perhaps a few memory swaps:
    1. In my case when I have some bugs so I open like 10 stackoverflows, 5 youtube tabs, 1-10 extra random blogs
    2. All the while having opened VSCode, Postman, both of which Apps require quite a bit of RAM and will either cap at 16GB or do some 1-2GB of "swapped" memory.
    3. In my case I still use 8GB windows laptop and Ryzen chip is SO GOOD, memory swaps aren't felt, everything is fast, so for me to "upgrade to MacOS of 8GB RAM" would be downgrade to my wallet - ONLY this - imagine I pay (in my EU country) 2000euro / 2100$ for MacBook Air 15 inches M3 8GB RAM / 14 inches 8gb RAM M3 - (from my 15.6 inches windows lol) and I get memory swaps - as on my 450 euro / 500$ windows Ryzen laptop LOL Apple WTF!
    And I can't even play games, I have 2nd option of Windows Laptop with 4070 GPU, performance of 4060 GPU desktop for 1600eur / 1700$ or 4060 GPU laptop 1300eur/1350$ + I can play games + both have 16GB - or... - do I buy 8GB RAM M3 MacBook 2100$ for its logo or pay 2500eur / 2600$ for 16 inches 16GB M2 Pro (cuz M3 Pro is 3000eur/3100$).
U see I talk a lot like u, but Apple won't care it hits people wallets so much, and only if they were more generous/down to earn and scam less: I'd have bought 2100$ MacBook 16GB base model immediately
    .. but 8GB hurts my intelligence ..
my brain screams "OVERPAY for Apple LOGO??!"

In my opinion, I would go for 16GB Ram M2 air, or if it's within the budget, just go for the 16gb M3 Air

Depends on your needs and what you do with it, an M3 will be better in every points but the M2 16go gonna be better in some precise work like video editing

I’ve just upgraded the ram on my 7 yr Dell laptop from 4 GB to 16GB ram and I only paid £29.00 for 16GB ram. And apple charge £200 for 16GB upgrade why is this ?? Because Apple will rip the customer off all the time ! The product only cost a pennies to build.. yet Apple will over price and over charge the consumers!

    • @theeverydaysam408

Yes, it is a bit insane to think they are charging that much for RAM in 2024 and especially for storage
