I agree with testing out the garment. That is what I did with the skirt I just made. I'm so glad I did, this way I learned the pattern along the way, adjusted the pattern as well. I got a wearable skirt out of it, which I still need to make more adjustments when I make the skirt again with my better material. I appreciate you & other sewists that do this as well.
I agree with you. I feel l’m making it twice, HOWEVER, there have been numerous times that I wish I had. Especially when I have use fabric that I really liked. The fit hasn’t been an issue; I didn’t like the way I looked in the garment! For that reason i now make a wearable mulsin for certain patterns, not all patterns. I do it mainly for dress patterns. I’m only 5’2” with a “healthy “ mid section and some dress patterns I have made, I just didn’t like on me. But for those dresses I’m now reusing the fabric for something else, so all isn’t lost. By the way I love your channel, it’s informative and humorous at the same time 🌸
Thank you Sharon! “Informative and humorous at the same time” has always been the goal! 🙏🏾. We’re about the same height. Great idea to repurpose the fabric so that’ll all isn’t lost…cuz we sure don’t like to lose! 😜😎. Thanks for tuning in! Take care!
Love it. I never made muslins when I started sewing, nor when I made bridal gowns and other clothing. I consider muslins now… but never even considered making a muslin when I was younger…
I hear you! You have pics of some of those bridal gowns? I'd love to see them. I've made ONE and that thing almost took me out! 😃. Always good to hear from you!
I make muslins all the time, wearable muslins. The main reason is to test the fit. Secondary reason, to practice new procedures and sewing methods. Fortunately I have a muse that always takes whatever I sew. So the first make is always a wearable muslin... 😮😅😊
Okay then Afrocentric 🫶🏽. Sounds like you got it down pat! YES!!! 👏🏾. Don’t stop get it, get it! Thanks for sharing and also thanks for stopping by! 😎. Take care!
You look great in that very wearable muslin!❤ I make a version of a muslin...no pockets, one sleeve, no facings, much shorter.. out of old scraps...it always looks horrendous!😳 Certainly not wearable! 😅
I should have mentioned...I'm Andrea...Howard doesn't sew...he plays golf,😂 but we share the email address...the 1st time I noticed it was to compliment a sewist on her tutorial on a full bust adjustment! 🙄 Really enjoyed your humour, too!😁
Hi Terri. I never have nor will I ever make a muslin for myself. Call me stubborn or stupid. Or a rogue. I just want to get to the fun part. When I sewed for others, I made muslins for them. But I learned to measure the pattern pieces, tissue fit and make adjustments. Like Stelly, I'm full busted and short waisted and usually make those adjustments before I start and then make a few tweaks as I go along. Of course, I've had a handful of uh-oh's (like my attempt at a corset earlier this year) but have I learned my lesson? Nope🥴. As my mother used to say, "Every spoil is a style!" The corset is now a purse. So I venture forth with seam ripper in hand. LOL!!! I love this pattern and you did a great job with it. Maybe a sling back shoe would work. In the Fall, it's going to look good with a pair of boots.
Thank you! Ausets! 😊. I am leaning more towards the idea of tissue fitting when I’m not forced to do a muslin. I too want to make a corset some day…and a purse. 😜🤓. Moms be knowing don’t they? ❤️ That’s the beauty of creating…some lessons we learn and some we don’t. 😎 It’s good to hear from you. Hope ALL is well! Thanks for stopping by! Take care!
You did a fabulous job. I do make muslins because of fit and fabric. I’m full busted and short waisted, so that makes for fitting challenges. Also it’s a trial run to practice skills I’ve never tackled before. On my table now is, Charm Sewing School’s Lillian Jacket which is a ode to Lili Ann suits back in the day. Once I get the fit right, I plan on “coping”/“recreating” several of Lilli Ann suits. The details in those suits give me life so, a muslin gives me a chance to practice and make mistakes without wasting fabrics I would have used to make the final garment.
Hey Stelly! As always, I could learn from you! Sounds like you’ve got that whole muslin concept down pat! 🤓 Hope ALL is well with you and yours! Thanks for sharing! Take care!
Although I do have the Vogue 2000, I also just purchased your Jiffy pattern and some pink knit fabric to make a muslin-hoping it turns out as nice as yours did. keep your inspirational videos coming! Take care.
WADEN! 😍. How fabulous! Pink is one of my FAVORITE colors! 🥰. I’m excited for you! 👏🏾. It’s sew exciting! You’ve gotta find a way to share your finished project with me…seriously! 😊 This is so cool! 😎…made my day! 👌🏾 Happy seeing to ya!
Nice dress looks great on you. I need to start making muslin. I made Mimi G wrap dress with 10 pattern pièces and I made a mess.😂 But I learned some new skills. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Lucy! Thank you and thanks for tuning in! 😎. My motto is “as long as you’ve learned something, it was well worth it!” Thanks for sharing. Take care!
You did a great job on your dress muslin. I had the same pattern and gave it away years ago after making it once because when I sat down the dress skirt didn’t cover me, it revealed everything because I’m pear shaped. If I had made a muslin perhaps I could have addressed that issue. Wish I had kept the pattern anyway. Didn’t know about muslins when I was younger.
Hi Pearline! Isn't that the truth...if we knew back then what we know now! It is a well drafted pattern for sure. I'm 🍐🍐🍐 shaped too! 😄Thanks for tuning in and thanks a bunch for sharing! Take care!
It's wonderful to see another one of your videos. yes, I pretty much always make a muslin these days. I have to as I have a middle- aged body and pattern companies, commercial and independent don't really make patterns that fit our bodies right out of the package. Muslins are time consuming, BUT, once you get a really good fitting one, you can use parts of it to hack other patterns, and know beforehand that the sewn item will fit. I love that fabric of your muslin, and that dress is very very flattering on you. I can't understand why you plan not to make that dress again. What about in a denim or \warm knit jersey for winter. Either way, thanks for this video.
Waden! ☺️ Hope ALL is well! Thanks for sharing. “Once you’ve gotten a really good fit, use parts to hack other garments” is definitely an advantage that I’d not considered! 🤓. Guess I don’t make them enough but perhaps I need to start! Thank you. I just love this fabric too! The original plan was to eventually make the long one…but I didn’t say “never” so who knows? I could change my mind. 🤷🏽♀️😂. ALWAYS good to hear from you Waden! Take care! 😎
Hi. First time viewer. Haven't even got through your introduction and already agree with you. I don't like to make muslins. Time consuming, costs and who got time to make the dress twice. I have made a lot that fit right out the envelope but when I see vintage patterns that are not my size I always wonder if I do a muslin can I make the adjustments? Hhhmmm??? You are my exact measurements so I have to follow you to see what I can learn. Now back to the video. Oh by the way, you muslin is adorable on you. Ok. I love your fabric and anybody that does not sew but that mentions the print upside down should just get the sideeye. I love how your dress came out and if you don't think you will make it again, maybe I can buy it from you (in my begging voice). I am not really a wrap dress girlie but the V2000 got me feeling left out and since I can't find in my stores and NOT paying the price online, maybe you are my saviour to try it out.
@@quazylade90 thank you! Exact measurements huh?! Awe look out now! 😜. By all means try it. I bet you can do it…if I can, so can you! 😎. Thanks for stopping by. Hope ALL is well! Take care!
So gud to see you Terry. The muslin looks gud 👍🏿. I make muslins when I have time. I pick out 2 fabrics for the garment in question. The final fabric and a fabric I would like the garment in, but not precious to me. Sandals would look nice. I like peep toe something with minimum foot exposure. Hubby thinks I am silly cuz I am doing pedicures all sumner long. Just me. IT FEELS GOOD 😊
Well... if it feels good? 😊 End of story! So gud to hear from you, Kindred! I certainly hope that ALL IS WELL with you and yours! 😎! I thought about sandals at one point, and may have to try that. Gotta have them toes right now...no matter what...especially in the Summer! Have a GREAT week ahead! Take care!
Hahahaha! Exactly! What’s interesting is that I thought about that too…except sleeveless…but perhaps a short sleeve with a cuff could work for wearing in the summertime? 🤔. I need a new bathrobe too. 😂. Thanks for stopping by Katie! Take care! 😎

I looked the dress you’re wearing. Did you make it? If so, the pattern you used?
Hi Cynthia. Thanks for stopping by. Yes. I made it and it is Simplicity 7705…the dress on the left of the thumbnail. Hope this helps. Take care.
You are so funny. I really like the dress but I think it needs short sleeves. You don’t want it to look like a bathrobe
