  • White Collar is an excellent procedural led by a fantastic, charming performance from it's central anti-hero, Neal Caffrey. On this week's Lost and Found, I break down why White Collar is such a well written procedural and has such a fantastic anti hero at it's center.

    White Collar is up there as one of my all time favourite shows. I loved how it touched a little on history and a whole lot on the art world. It was smartly written and the characters were great. Even the somewhat ridiculous plots involving Nazi treasure was easily overlooked because the execution was so good.
    I also love Elizabeth's character & Agent Barrigan. Shows always try to add strong women but they're 90% identical and basically written like men. Barrigan & Elizabeth are not like that. They're complex individuals that feel authentic.

    Yeah, I can kinda see the Father-Son relationship between Neal Caffrey & Peter Burke, but then again I kinda see it more as Big Brother-Little Brother relationship. The more time Neal & Peter spent together working on cases, the more of a deep bond kept developing between them. That is why I’ve always loved this show; not just because it takes place in my beautiful hometown NYC, but because they’re inseparable & they end up learning more of each other while feeling guilty & worried about each other. I wish they can make one more season in where Peter & Neal reunite one more time, then Neal can finally live his life the way he wanted to without ever having to look back being worried about living behind bars again.

    • @NaterTot
      @NaterTot  4 роки тому +28

      Surprisingly a sizeable difference in age between the two. I definitely see the brothers thing too. I think the Dad situation felt appropriate in the later seasons when his real Dad stepped in. You saw Peter care on a level that was as deep and nurturing as a Father would.

    • @mmaescher
      @mmaescher Рік тому +1

      I initially agreed with your perception of their relationship, especially in season one, but as the show continued, they seemed too reluctant to change the functioning status quo, with each season becoming more formulaic, it kind of ruined the relationship between Peter and Neal for me? In the first season it makes sense for Peter to distrust Neal cause he's a con man and Peter has only ever known him to be a very intelligent, crafty yet non violent con man. It makes sense for him to be wary of Neal. As the season progresses and they both start to trust each other more, with Peter realising that, while Neal has a appreciation for the finer things in life, Neal doesn't really have evil or even just purely monetary intentions, but is instead in it for the thrill and to show off that he can in fact do what most others claim is impossible, and his also deeply driven to do most illegal things he does with the intention of saving his one true love, which Peter understands and relates to due to his own love for Elizabeth. They work really well in this season since they are convincing foils of one another, just similar enough to effectively play on their differences. Peter love Elle and would do anything for her; Neal loves Kate and would do anything for her, Peter works for the thrill his work gives him; Neal stages elaborate heists for the thrill it gives him. While their means of operation might differ, their motivations are quintessentially the same. That's what makes them seem like an older and a younger brother who have the same family and possible the similar values yet have dealt with life in very different ways.
      Peter is a good mentor in season one cause he shows Neal how he could satisfy/achieve/deal with his motivations in a lawfully abiding way, while Neal keeps Peter young, challenges him and helps him leave his well established comfort zone. The issue I see is that they revert back to this relationship of mistrust at the beginning of every season and have both Neal and Peter essentially learn the same lessons and face the same moral quandaries over and over again, instead of letting them learn from their respective mistakes and really develop. Peter knows that Neal will run if he is pushed or feels too controlled and Neal knows that Peter will be less forgiving the longer he waits to tell him about the shit he gets into. Neal has the same revelation about wanting to be good every season but the show never lets him change in a meaningful way, cause the season finally keeps resetting him to his previous state. Similarly, Peter and Neal may fight but at the end of the day, there are no real long term consequences in regards to their relationship, there is no change. When Peter massively oversteps his boundaries in regard to Neal's father, the only lead Neal has on Ellen's killer, there's a fallout sure, but that barely lasts an episode before they're back to the status quo. Peter never learns from Neal treating him like he's just his handler, never realises that his need for control has gotten of hand, and Neal never learns to set effective boundaries so he may approach Peter of his own volition when he needs help. That ruins the older-younger brother dynamic cause that kind of dynamic requires trust. Something neither of them should have after the first few episodes of season 4 cause Peter never really trusted Neal to begin with and Neal constantly gets in trouble for trusting Peter. case in point: he was perfectly safe in Cape Verde until Peter called him under false pretences and then proceeded to record their conversation to find Neal, despite being told by literally everyone, even his boss and Neal, to back off, which then gives away Neal's location to the people who want to find and maybe hurt him.
      They never let Neal tilt back into fully being a con-man criminal thief/forger either so he never gets to change as a character in a way that would let him truly shine as one of the good guys but also never let him fully regress into being what he currently shines most at and is most compelling to watch while doing, which is scheme, planning heists and using charisma to get out of trouble. So they end up tragically underutilising both Neal and Peter, and their dynamic, which make Peter pretty unlikable by the end of the show in my opinion.

      I really loved her at the start of the show, cause she was a fantastic character that was morally kind of between Peter and Neal while also being a delight to watch cause she could be fairly multifaceted and also let people see another side to Peter. Later in the show though, I think they kind of diverted from who her character originally was and utilised her in a way that led to her kind of abusing the trust Neal and Mozzie placed in her and using the fondness Neal had for her to make him lie to Peter. I kind of wish they would have stuck to the way her character acted in season 1 and used her a bit more later on in the show and included her in more of their plans and scheming, since I think that would have really rounded things out.

  • @Silvertip_M
    @Silvertip_M 2 роки тому +19

    Having re-watched this show recently, it's striking how much both characters are actually anti-heroes. While we see that more often than not Peter is right about Neal...he's often basing it on hunches, and the time where he's wrong about Neal are waived off as "Well it's better to be safe than sorry". Burke is absolutely well meaning...as is Neal most of the time...he's shown to steal only from those who are so wealthy that they aren't really going to be severely hurt by his actions.
    Burke is a tool of the state, he does everything according to the law, regardless of who it hurts in the end. With the exception of Mozzie, everyone who commits a crime in Burke's presence ends up being arrested and charged. Burke doesn't care about right and wrong, he cares about catching criminals.
    This is what makes the relationship so great, Neal cares about right and wrong, and is often Peter's conscience. What Neal doesn't care about is the law...and Peter is the one keeping Neal from breaking the law regularly...although Neal does break the law all the time...he's just given license to do so by the FBI.
    The pair itself are anti-heroes, who balance each other out to be heroic. By himself Burke isn't heroic, he's a good FBI agent who blindly follows the law...Neal isn't heroic as he's a criminal looking to enrich himself. Together they are heroic because they balance each other out, and do good as a result of their partnership.
    One thing which is interesting about the show is that it never shows wealth and rich people as undeserving unless they commit crimes. In several cases, you even hear that Neal can't be rich because he hasn't "earned" it. Even though he is more talented and works harder than most of the rich people on the show. In the real world, most rich people are born to it, and don't really earn their wealth. The world of White Collar is a nearly utopian meritocracy where the people who earn wealth have it, and those who don't are either poor or criminals. It works as the premise of a show like this...but it's in no way reflective of the real world.
    This is a great show to re-watch critically, its fun escapism with great writing and pacing...but it's also a great character study where as much as they try to make things black and white...it's a lot more subtle if viewed a bit more critically than intended.

    Last two times I have tried to create a "Handsome" rogue in D&D, I've based the character off Neil Caffrey. Or when I think if I should wear a Fedora... realize I am not as handsome or slick/cool as Caffrey, and then say no. I shouldn't :p I think the next time I want to play a "straight-lace" character, I am basing it off Burke.
    USA had a great run. I keep meaning to check out some of their new stuff (My Father likes Suits a lot). Mr. Robot (Heard good things), Treadstone, maybe try the Purge.... but yeah the shows back during this period on USA were fantastic. I agree that it had its problems, (The other ones, Burn Notice, Psych and Monk had theirs as well, but the green screen and product placement were out on top of issues), but it had a lot going for it, mostly the whole "chemistry" between the two leads, and fantastic secondary and trinity (Is that how you say it?) characters.

I think the constant reliance on it, especially with modern day story telling can make for forgettable shows. I think this is why so many people, like myself, enjoy shows like Psych, White Collar, Daredevil, Burn Notice, etc. Due to the lack of production size and budget size, they're forced to make compelling characters. Love Psych, Monk, Burn Notice, probably in that order, but all 4 get a 10 when rating them. I liked Covert Affairs too, as well as Suits and Royal Pains, not necessarily in that order. But with underlying themes on Pysch with Neil's dad, Ellen, the Rafael kept me hooked. I'll still binge all 4 and for me are better than other network shows, that I still enjoy, like Bones, Castle, Lie to Me, Elementary, Criminal Minds, NCIS, Law and Order (all versions) CSI (all versions). BUT, I recently discovered "The Sinner" and although its not as procedural and it's a different genre of show, it's very exhilarating and amazingly written! Matt Bomer (Neal) will appear in the new season of the show too! Everyone should at least check out the first episode. It's on Netflix.
    Note: It's not a continuous show, it's an anthology. So each season has a fully different overarching plot, but with the same detective investigating it.
