There are times when I'm just envious of Japan having so many tasty river fish. Meanwhile, around where I'm at there's like only catfish if you are lucky. I sure want to try ayu one day.

Anakin brother you are lucky because you have at least caught a fish. Here in the Philippines a lot of people use non standard nets and keep all kind of fish they want and sometimes people use car batteries with a coil or wire to electrocute the fish. 😩

It's nice to see a healthy population of sweet fish. They are disappearing in Korea.
In Japan, local fishermen's associations hatch sweetfish and release them. Without it, Sweetfish would already be extinct.

I’ve seen vids where it is said that Ayu are vegetarian. And guard territories to protect areas with good moss rocks. That’s why the decoy Ayu work. The Ayu attack the decoy protecting their territory and get hooked by the trailer hook. Didn’t know that they take bait too. Which method works better?
When Ayu are small they eat small insects and small crustaceans, but as adults Ayu eat only moss, as you said. So for adult Ayu, decoy Ayu, and for juvenile Ayu, bait fishing like this footage.
if it's about efficiency, then, I think it is as Sweetnight said(i dont have much experience of ayu fishing though). But somehow, bait works for adult ayu as well. In 2019, in this spot, 32cm ayu was caught with same method.

Regarding using dead fish as bait, here in the UK using live fish is banned in virtually all venues and dead fish is just as effective, especially if you use a,set up call "wobbling " where you can simulate a sick or dying fish, it's worth looking into 👍

@@415busa8 pretty much, and even on other waters it's really frowned upon, its seen as unnecessary and TBH, cruel. You really dont have to do it either, once you learn how to wobble a dead bait, it's not difficult

@@KakaponSupopon no problem, there are plenty of UA-cam vids explaining wobbling, basically you have a set up with 2 hooks and put the bait fish on the hooks so it has a bend in it, so when you reel it in, in a similar way you would feel in a lure, the bait turns and wobbles like a sick or dying fish, and as we know a predator fish will always attack a weak fish. Basically you make the dead fish appear alive just as you make a lure appear alive

what are the regulations/ harvest limits on those sweetfish?
It depends where you live and which river in Japan. On average, sweet fish fishing starts from 1st June and ends by the end of October.
As fisherimai said, it depends on rivers. In this river, no size limit but season for bait fishing method starts from July 1st and ends in October 15th
