Thank God for PBS... in an era where networks are determined to create cheap shows determined to dumb us down as a nation, PBS is the place we we can find quality entertainment in which we can inform and empower ourselves. It reminds me of when I was a child in the early 70's, American programming was educational and stretched our minds. Thank you for sharing this with us via upload, we really appreciate this!!!
I'd expand on that and say the interest is worldwide. Love PBS and you can see why Trump wanted to cut funding to it as it teaches the public history as well as compassion and humility and stimulates curiosity in further education which is something he had no interest in his followers having
@Ghost_ Slaayer You do know it's easy to research the shit before making this comment, google it plz instead of making a statement that seems as though someone else is lying, instead of your ignorance of the facts...
@Ghost_ Slaayer No that's where your wrong, you should never want proof from those you oppose there truth/facts. It's up to you to KNOW before commenting...
This is very mind blowing, and touching. We would like to know where our ancestors are from? Looking through the hour glass of the past, there are unsolved things.
I wish Henry Gates would do same documentary on tracing DNA on Latin American celebrities. There's a HUGE denial about the African and Asian ancestry in Latin America.
I took a class in undergrad called Geography of Latin America.... if you think the USA deals with racism.... go a little further down south to Latin America
I wish they would do a documentary on ANY ethnicities other than blacks and whites. The US is made up of so many races, but Asians, Hispanics, and Native Americans are totally ignored by media, advertisers and discussion. Ads are painfully obvious trying to keep up with trends, and have saturated the public with images of mixed couples....but only black and white. As half Native American, I have watched from the sidelines as this new racism viewpoint grows.
wowwww!chris rockk crying???that must be really intense..i salute all my black pple boy!SURVIVOR shd be our middle name! and thanks very much for sharing..:)
poverty is the culprit...it's an abomination on this earth. Yes, I agree if many people knew of the struggles of their families they would want to do better, how could you not.
African Americans should support the growing movement in West Africa for West African unification. They need all the help they can get to resist European neo-colonization.
R.I.P. Hari Jones. A wonderful who was always excited to share his knowledge. Edit: Check out his Ted Talk or his talk about the TRUE HISTORY OF JUNETEENTH.
Sounds a lot like the point in Shawshank redemption when the librarian didn’t assimilate to being an ex con after being imprisoned with a role and identity and purpose for years. And sadly hung him self as a newly freed man. And yes, I know that enslavement does not come as a punishment of crime.
Anything that can make a Brooklyn boy cry..must be touching and intense!!! I feel happy for my distant cousins in America because sthey never knew they had a very, very rich history...which can be traced ...probably because all throughout their lives, they've been made to believe that they were 2nd class citizens. Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, eat that!!!!!
IT HAS BEEN 400 YRS. MY PEOPLE...TOO LONG..YOUR GENES WILL NOT ALL YOUR HEADS TO BOW FOREVER. THE LORD GOD WILL NOT DISCIPLINE US FOREVER ... YOU ARE STRONGER💪🏿 THEN ALL!!! I KNOW YOU FEEL IT TOO MY MOST ANCIENT PEOPLE 🤴🏿👸🏿.......TIME TO RISE AND SHINE ✊🏿✊🏾...🌅 YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL..👰🏿 I LOVE YOU MORE!!!!😍🥰
People of this country who are people of darken skin, we are Americans first and then descendants of Africa. We are born to this land, which means we are Americans, our descendants are from Africa therefore, we are American with African descendants!
And yet there are people who don't think that slavery is still affecting people today. Racism continues, I don't really understand it because I was born, grew up and still live on my beautiful Caribbean island. Anyone with a heart should feel hurt about that dreadful time for my brothers and sisters, who up to this day are still oppressed in a modern way
No Hun I liked this Video I just said what I thought and the People took me down as a bigot. But Im No Bigot And I didn't mean it how some took it. Love and peace to All.
Not black here, but it amazes me of what freedom can do the hearts of many, the chains fall to the dust and rot, raise hands up and look heavenward to say "Hallelujah!"
I am so sorry but with such rich history, the truth is Black Americans and African Americans have a different journey and can be seen in today's struggles in and out of America. Black Americans were born with a predispositioned attitude (born angry) African Americans were born out of the unfortunate misfortunes of life atrocities and migrate to opportunities around the world to meet with treatments enslaved people of color deal with. The journey understanding helps to understand the attitudes and culture of a person of color you meet and no monoliths exist. We do need to unite after acknowledging this and gain respect.
Black Americans & African Americans are typically one in the same. African immigrants and the children born of those immigrants all over the world have uniquely different experiences. We need to worry less about who is called Black or African and more about unity.
Fuck critical race theory. This and roots should be mandatory in every history curriculum. People would maybe finally start empathizing. Well done guys, awesome documentary 👌🏼
@@stormstorm7396 wow. That person's ignorance... They're basically saying, "all lives matter" 7 years ago. I just can't with those people. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
Do I get anything for that? Yeah, freedom for the future of a country that gives you every opportunity to be successful. America is a great land of opportunity for everyone, regardless of race, color, creed or national origin. 8f you want it, go get it.

I'm a Cameroonian (West African) watching from Cape Town, South Africa and I'm just moved
My grandfather is listed on the Civil War memorial in DC.
I wish and hope PBS would play this series again and everyone in this country should watch it.
I'd expand on that and say the interest is worldwide. Love PBS and you can see why Trump wanted to cut funding to it as it teaches the public history as well as compassion and humility and stimulates curiosity in further education which is something he had no interest in his followers having

@Ghost_ Slaayer It's called a " rebuff" preferably one with facts and understanding...
It is excellent! Finding Your Roots, on PBS, is excellent, too. Same host, Henry Louis Gates
This is very mind blowing, and touching. We would like to know where our ancestors are from? Looking through the hour glass of the past, there are unsolved things.
Thank you for this!!! I was looking everywhere to watch this
What is it called pls?
I wish Henry Gates would do same documentary on tracing DNA on Latin American celebrities. There's a HUGE denial about the African and Asian ancestry in Latin America.

Check out Black in Latin America by Henry Gates
Some mexicans are actually filipinos by blood.

Dr. Gates is awesome
Man, Chris Rocks is really young for being born in 1965😳 It would be more realistic to say he was born in 1975 as young as he appears!
This was made over 12 years ago.
African Americans should support the growing movement in West Africa for West African unification. They need all the help they can get to resist European neo-colonization.
When you find out from where your from it touches you.
This is so touching!
Don't give up the fight. It's not over!
This is so lovely.
Thank you very much!

@mercylyn19 you are welcome thank you for viewing
Morgan Freeman knows it just the way he felt it on Shawshank Redemption.
That moment with Don Cheadle broke me.

Our ancestors* are from Africa
As Cnris Rock said "we are very fortunate", why do you think he said that?
