  • In this video, I give a broad introduction to what you need to know about a Project Management Office, or PMO.
A PMO is a group that serves the needs of Project Managers and project teams.
    The most common activities are:
    • Setting and maintaining project management standards
    • Developing and promoting standard processes
    • Providing support to project governance
    • Sharing of knowledge and tools
    • Supporting project management practitioners
    • Coordinating project and program activities
    • Monitoring and documenting status across a portfolio of projects
    • Maintaining documentation on process, standards, and performance
    Project Management Office
Standard tools and processes for project delivery. They often have an additional focus on project assurance.
    Program Management Office

    Portfolio Management Office

    Three PMO Models
    • Supportive PMO
    • Controlling PMO
    • Directive PMO
Stages in an Incremental Approach to Creating a New PMO
    • Establish core business case
    • Quick win.
    • Communicate and consult
    • Determine the Why
    • Core functions
    • Tailored expansion
    • Implement the right toolset
    • Involve ‘customers’ in frequent reviews
    • Communicate the value you deliver
Within the PMO career path, there are many roles. However, I shall focus on five: four of which are taken from the excellent House of PMO publication, ‘The PMO Competency Framework’: geni.us/MZI7I5Q
    • PMO Director
    • PMO Manager
    • PMO Analysts
    • PMO Administrators
    • PMO Coaches and Trainers

Hello, I'm going to try a position as a PMO analyst. Any tips?

I don't know where you are in your career or what you know. So I'll offer a simple observation. This is a junior level role, so be prepared to learn. Volunteer for anything and everything and use it as an opportunity to observe the project professionals around you.If you graft, it can be a springboard for an excellent career.

Is there is an Agile PMO too?

A single agile project is unlikely to use a PMO but certainly a PMO could support a number of agile projects - or, more likely, a number of projects that each differ on the scale from purely predictive to purely adaptive. But, if anyone reading this has specific examples or experience to share, I'd welcome it.
