I own two real Rhodes ('75 Mark I Suitcase + '68 Sparkle Top) and 3 VI's (Scarbee 73, Red Tape EXS, and Suitcase Premiere).
In most productions where the Rhodes is not the star instrument, where it plays a 'texture' role supporting a bigger picture, very few people can hear the differences between any of the above instruments, and the emotion of the song isn't hindered by the use of the VI's.
In productions where the Rhodes is in the spotlight and the performance and arrangement kick ass, the real instruments deliver a whole other level of drama, grit, and sparkle and everyone in the studio can feel it. More importantly, the player responds to the instrument more powerfully, because the real instruments respond to the player more powerfully, their dynamics and attack are visceral.
If the music involved is just basic triads, surrounded by a lot of programmed/looped stuff and not much organic playing by skilled musos, then any decent VI will do the trick just fine.
Any skilled craftsman understands the role of tools and materials and how they relate to the task at hand, and any producer worth his or her salt understands where all these amazing instruments fit in the grand scheme of things.
So what is your choice of the VST instrument most comparable to the original?

fender still the king! such a warm sound!
The only thing can replace a Rhodes suitcase piano is a Rhodes suitcase piano, and that's the point. Nice videos by the way, keep up guys. Lounge Lizard and that Dusty thing was quite close though
Love this demo. If you could get your hands on a fully restored early 70's model the bar would be raised. The early tone is superior to the later tone. The MKV here sounds the best.
This is a great format for a comparison like this; you can really hear how these plugins behave when actually being played by musicians that know their shit. Tight musicianship, guys!
I have a real Rhodes (a Mark II Seventy-Three, the same model that's is being played here I believe), and this video show once again that you can't really beat the real thing.
None of them seem to be without issues, and they all seem to target a different playing style.
That said, I'm looking for a good Rhodes plugin because I don't want to bring my Rhodes on live gigs anymore and I'm already bringing a laptop anyway. Your videos are very helpful there.
So thanks!
(As an aside, the drums sound like they were totally triggered, especially the snare. Were they?)
The last two sound great. Purgatory Creek is clean, even and the velocity layers transition smoothly from soft to bark.
The real thing SINGS!!!!
Scarbee Classic EP-88 ♡
Great expression on most. I noticed 2 were duller on the low frequencies and not as bright on the high. I prefer the Mark 2 and Mark 5 versions, but the midi files worked almost as well as the Mark 2 by itself, however, since I could not see your footpad action, it wasn't clear exactly why the difference between each. While it got tedious hearing the same piece on all, it was needed to see how bright each mapped sound set performed. Thanks. It explains why having the expression knobs matters on the Mark series Rhodes, instead of straight midis played from files. There were some discernable differences be they from foot pads or expression knobs, they had differences that favor the Mark series Rhodes.
This is sweeeeeeet. And maaaaan that Duesenberg bass is from another world
XLN Audio Addictive Keys Mark One… ☮🔥
Your favourite (and mine in this test) "Premier Sound Factory - Mark I Stage Premier" doesn't exist anymore. At least on their official website it isn't there anymore. Bummer
Tone wise they can all sound good, but only the player can know how it is responding dynamically to his intent. We can hear that when he plays the real Rhodes he is more inclined to play loud staccato chords because only the real instrument can deliver that unison stab with the wide dynamic range. All the software emulations have to suffer random latency from first scanning the keybed twice to determine note then velocity encode to midi, transmit and receive midi to interrupt to cpu, to software program to play digital, to digital filter and effects to DAC to audio. It can be relatively fast but it is not constant so you can hear that the bass line at the beginning is subject to timing perturbations and with chords not all the notes peak at the same time which smears the sound so players tend to play more arpeggio chords. The real drummer is more important when playing a software instrument as he imparts the rhythmic sense to the sound. You can hear this when you compare the in the pocket timing of the real Rhodes at the beginning bass line to the other emulations. The jitter in the latency scrambles your focus and it is harder for the listener to hear the real you and you sound more anonymous especially playing solo; this can be good as it can mask any lack of musical intent so you become like background elevator music. If you want to hold focus and convey real music intent by manipulating timing, tone and dynamics, then the real instrument supports that effort the best.
??? what tha f....??? Have you ever played a VSTi on a decent computer with a decent audioboard?! Your brainstorm may stop in a microsecond. Your not wrong with the technical explanation, by the way in the real life if you have 5 ms of latency. 0,005 second...maybe 0,004 seldom... 1 cycle of a 200hz acustic wave...how can you notice the delay?? Are you able to play 200 times/sec. a keyboard?? Things changes if you are recording to a MIDI sequencer and playing back cause midi timing on mac OS and win is shit! Said that, yes, the real thing seams more dynamic. Sympathetic vibrations playing chord help a lot.
I guess you are one of them that thinks to brake better without ABS engaged!
No, when stopping is the simple objective and the sensors are more alert and aware than the driver then ABS is better. But we are talking about manifesting creative flow which might happen faster than you can think. If the goal is to invoke something that is already known then use the synthetic. A good musician can always adapt to the limitations of his instrument but if you want to be open to the most possibilities then you want the realtime adaptations out of the way because they take you out of the flow.
Paul Shim i play keys and drums. acoustic and electronic. if my system is set well my state of mind is the same also when i do improvvisations. The only difference that give me more satisfaction of a mechanic real instrument is the phisical feedback. vibes and mechanical behaviour of keys or stick agaist the heads. For drums also the infinite nuance available. but i never mind the delay jitter...playing electro.not nowadays. 10 years ago maybe! we overtook the threshold in the last 10 .years of tech improvement . IMHO
The physical key mechanism of a Rhodes is far from instantaneous, I'd bet that a MIDI controller is capable of a faster response...
you'll never get as good as the real rhodes. but this gets you close. from there you can process/add effects to get you closer.
To me the real difference is the feel of the instrument. That obviously goes a long way. The sounds are close to the naked ear and you can get even closer with some EQ and filtering. It's the vibration that comes from hitting the keys of a fender rhodes. It just feels different. I wouldn't be able to use the plugin version atleast without some weighted keys. It would feel odd otherwise.
You might think you like a particular sound because they are all different Rhodes Mark sounds. All the plugins sound great and they are at different settings in the knobs. One cannot just say, I like this better or that. I wouldn't discount any plugin vs the real thing. I use Lounge Lizard and no matter what anyone says about any plug ins I could care one hoot.
Hoot
Although it gets pretty close, software of course won't replace hardware. BUT don't forget a real Rhodes comes with maintenance and you must be willing to do that. I find it fun to mess with hardware, so an MK1 for me :)
Great playing. Really a treat to hear that. How do you fell about the Yamaha Reface CP?
Looks like a custom built controller German made... 🎹☮️🔥
I was watching your video, recorded some time ago, and was fascinated how you got so close to the Rhodes. Regarding the Lounge, I own a Lounge Lizard 4 but never got so close for a real Rhodes sounding patch. Do you by chance remember the patch/settings you had for this. Thanks and regards.
The Rhodes is above all... But I like the Precision Sound a lot.
Hallo Christian,
Vielen Dank für den Vergleich ! Tolle Arbeit wieder!
Lounge Lizard and the Dusty Tines were closest, but nothing beats and actual Rhodes. The wood casing, mechanical links and free ringing tines all add that certain something.
they all sound good tbh
lol. The Mark 2 hands down!!!! In the era of huge sample libraries I didn't expect such a shut out. Most of the libraries seem to have a very similar timbre. I love my Scarbee Mark 1, GSI Mr. Ray, and Acoustic Samples E-Pian and Mark 79, but I afraid they'd be slayed by the real Rhodes too!! lol YIKES, I wouldn't have picked a favorite or at least not broadcasted it, especially since everyone donated the plugins.
Purgatory Creek sounds open yet has dymanics.
Wow, what beast is the bass? Also, I never seen anybody to have the silk wraps BEFORE the nut.
Hi there, thanks for your comment! Seems like I bought the wrong strings because Duesenberg say it's a shorty but in reality you need long strings for that kind of bridge. Kind regards from Berlin!
the trick is like in real pianos -- the sound is not just a one string (or group of one frequency) sound but a mix of inter-string combination resonations. Some VST tries to emulate it but realy no luck... for example just press and hold silently a high tones chord on REAL string piano without a sound and smash a bass note -- you will hear that high frequency chord resonates and playing too becouse of physics interprocess. And there are much of such a stuff in real acoustics which makes sound more "fluent and alive"
and that the keyboard do you have?
Need one right now!
Excellent vid! Can you please mark the times in the description so I can quickly jump to each plugin? Thanks :)
+Rade Martinović How about "No". He did MORE than enough.
Chris Wellz I don't understand why not.
Rade Martinović Because you could easily go through the video yourself.
+Chris Wellz sure, but adding timemarkers is just 10 minutes of work.
Rade Martinović Then do the 10 minutes of work then.
What midi controller is he using? I love the look of it.
when another video!!???? Wurlitzer 200A vs Plugins!!!
RSB are the best Rhodes guys) Here is not so many Rhodes on the market so VST may be the only solution. Thanks for your videos. XLN sounds really commercial, best "in the mix" sound for pop/soft styles song. Iit`s not that realistic as others, especially real rhodes with real dynamic and real grove as result, but real Rhodes not the best sound in a vid!) So It`s really hard to chose.
Thanks for your comment!
The XLN sounds like an "80s" digital rhodes. Maybe you should take a look at our first rhodes comparison. You can find it here
Fender Rhodes Mark II vs. Software vs. Nord (Vergleich / Comparison)
Die Fender Mark ist besser, das ist wundershon!
Purgatory Creek SOUNDS GGOOD
What's the name of the controller that you're using I would like to get on it you let me know
This guy has the groove...
Precisionsound Dusty Electric MK II was the best.
I was wondering which song you are playing in the demo. It's really great. I'd like to find the score somewhere.
I came across the Soniccouture "EP73 Deconstructed" plug-in. Sounds impressive in the demo tracks (at least to me, as a complete newby). They also have a Wurlitzer and Hohner Clavinet for example.
BTW: Not made my choice yet. Has anybody tried any of those plug-ins in Ableton Live 9 Light?
Und welche Art von MIDI-Keyboard hast du?
What kind of controller is that?
5:18 - Rhodes
6:03 - Lounge Lizard
very close
+PilferMusic That's exactly what I thought. And this is an emulation not even samples used in the Lounge Lizard. Well done.
I thought so too. It's the only one that caught the warmth of the lower notes in a real way and still had that smoothness in the mid and upper range.
does anyone know what midi controller is that?
Precisionsound Dusty Electric MK II feels good... not like real but close
Mk2 1982 has the grunt. More oomph and bellier up top.
What controller is he using in this video?
I want to know too!
What preset are you using at lounge lizard?
my only thought is, if the Rhodes sound was owned by Apple - all these companies would've been sued by now... 😂.. great video series
Where did you get that controller and where can I buy it from
Question: why in some emulation (es. Lounge Lizard) with sustain pedal pressed it mutes the tail of the previous note playing a "ribattuto" and in others (es. XLN) not? (instead the tail is mixed with the next same note played like an acustic piano) What is the real Rhodes behaviour?
What do think would come 2nd Place? I'd say Lounge lizard for its LowMidRange. Also could you do a NORD VS Dexibell VIVO S9 (DynoStage patch Sound). Thanks for sharing!
Ah yes, thank you - someone understands the Rhodes "bark". Thank you!
The rhodes recording its a direct recording from rhodes output plug?
What midi keyboard are you using here?
Did you ever find out?
www.keyboardmanufaktur.de/?page_id=108
What’s the controller?
Nothing is like the original!
you know any wurlitzer samples? .. thanks from Chile!
What midi controller is that?
What song did he play
intro song?? whats the piano's rhodes name
HI,what is the MIDI keyboard name you play?? that's cool!
Hey!
You can find more informations about it on www.keyboardmanufaktur.de
Only German at the moment. But it will be translated soon.
Hi. There doesn't seem to be the exact same model as in the video. I really like the look of the one in the video!
TheTilde me too! Awesome controller
Premier Sound Factory sounds a lot like the real thing.
I think the midi controller is the best looking midi controller I've ever seen. The company looks to be out of business🥺.
native instruments scarbee Mark I?
What is the song?
It's composed by RSB.
great vid!
I don't give a shit about the hardwares!!! what kind of music did you play in the videoes? it's fucking cool!!!
slow jazz, smooth jazz, neo soul
what is the music?
What's the name of the bass guitar?
Its a Duesenberg I don't know the model though I am a guitarist
If you play on a decent keyboard that you have control over, then even with software Rhodes - it is YOU that can still make the music sing. Besides, the Rhodes physical design is limited to a narrow sound. What are you going to do? Have 5 Rhodes all on stage and all setup differently? Or your Rhodes tech there with you ready to spend 10-20 minutes backing off the tines for different sound while your show is on.
And just how many tunes are in your set that should ALL HAVE the SAME RHODES SOUND? Whether it be it set up as Al Jerreau, Donald Fagan. or Herbie Hancock sound, too much Rhodes sound gets OLD FAST. What, do you think an MXR or Small Stone pedal change that?
Bottom line - Going with a good controller and software means you can still get a HAPPENING RHODES sound and PLAY YOUR ASS OFF?
drumset looks cool but sounds boring, how comes ? the master keyboard looks selfmade ?
Берлин жарь!)
Velvet 2 The best
Starts at 4:21. He's talking shit before all that
Learning how to produce good quality videos is a progress. Learning how to write comments without being a dick is as well it seems.
you look like that guy from the movie boyhood
Im blinden Test lässt sich das echte Rhodes nicht erkennen.
Video is 10 mins and you talk for 3 mins
florian is stooooned.
Fender Rhodes ist weicher under mehr musicalisch.
Halo! Whats the music style is this in the video? thanks
What's the keyboard brand/model?
+Edson Medina I was wondering the same...obviously a controller... but I thought it was hot better if it was an usb type of controller!...
www.keyboardmanufaktur.de/?page_id=108
+Edson Medina got it thanks...
