- I didn't expect to run out of time on this one, but alas, here we are! I think my next video will be a Windows vs Linux head to head. Also, I KNEW that card was bad! Either way, I think my friend is going to love this PC, it is CERTAINLY a lot better than his Vostro 200!
For those checking the description before watching the video, we upgrade my video editing PC, then use the old video editing PC parts to upgrade my main PC, then use my old main PC parts to build an awesome workstation for my friend, running Linux Mint!

3 builds 1 video=heaven Thanks Dude
I love the longer vids. They're inspiration for me to clean up around the studio and listen while I work. Can't wait 'til you get Super Thanks set up!
I like the longer videos.
Fun video! I will echo the comments from others - I like the longer videos and enjoy the conversational feel of them. I'm also a Mint fan. 👍
I appreciate that, thank you!
Longer for sure, I wish you were closer to me I have so many computer parts laying here LOL. Your gpu selection is looking scarce!
At 0:06:34 I have one of those exact cases! I use it for my ghetto rig: i7-3770, generic LGA1155 mobo, 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 RAM, RX 5500 (4GB OEM card), and 1TB SSD with Linux Mint 21. Makes a great sleeper build case and tucks away easily.
GTX 1060 Nice! I am still rocking a GTX 1070 in my Gaming Rig with a Ryzen 7 3700X😎
Love the longer videos
bro I think you might be a hoarder great video tho
You’re not entirely wrong about the 10900, but it’s dependent on the motherboard settings. In the case of when it was my main rig, the ASUS Maximus board decided it needed to always be at 5ghz, until a bios update bricked it. So it definitely ran hot. When it was on another board doing Unraid duty it barely went past 65w. I also legitimately thought that was a 32gb kit when I grabbed it off the shelf, so a definite bonus for you.
I realized I have an RX 560 that doesn’t need a 6pin and another 2667 v4. That should be a comparable consumer card to what you initially tested Linux with. Mulling around the idea of doing tests and filming that. Meaning to get into content creation for over a decade and now I’ve got an abundance of time.
I also agree with the sentiment of Windows 11. I haven’t used windows as my main OS in about 4 years, but now I won’t bother using it for testing either. It drives me up a wall and I’ve made peace with losing some game compatibility. Never going back.
@@pefty_lefty I would definitely film your tests, I think that would be awesome! The good news, is although I forgot to check the power draw, I can say that even in this rather stifled case... The CPU never gets over 65-ish degrees. It's bottlenecked by the graphics card right now anyway, so once I upgrade the graphics card I'm sure the CPU power draw, and heat, will go up lol. Thanks again, you are an absolute legend!
I bought a bunch of HDD's from goodwill. I haven't received them yet but even if just HALF work, I'll get my moneys worth. I was scared that they were all 10 years old but I trust them more now if you trust them too.
I'm always scared of used hard drives, but the truth is I generally don't have that many issues with them. Issues pop up some of my videos only due to the volume of hard drives I purchase lol, I have so many drives that even if only a few percent are bad, that's still a lot of bad hard drives
So happy for you that the i9 10900 works, shame about those 2 gpu's not working, its upsetting that theres seller's that are dishonest on ebay, although it might be worth testing all the outputs on the cards. with any luck maybe youll get a power supply to test that Radeon RX 5700XT card in your PO box one day. Im surprised that old cooler works on AM4 as i understood it the socket is slightly different to AM2/AM3 etc.... in terms of mounting hole spacing. oh and im using a similair cooler for AM2/AM3 socket testing, what amazes me is it fits on socket 939 and the FM sockets 1 and 2.
I've got a power supply powerful enough somewhere, it's in the "$7,000 1008 PC" I built earlier this year. I just need to dig it out and yoink that PSU lol
That weird split is normal and is standard. Its for supporting ATX with more than 20 pins, back when ATX 1st came about as a standard it was 20 pins, now its 24 (technically 20+4 is the correct mean to say it). That's why it has the "weird split" (which is actually normal). And try your GPUs on all possible output ports as it can sometimes be just that particular port.
In this particular case someone had split it into a 12-pin segment and a 8-pin segment with what appears to be side cutters lol
@@LowSpecActionSquad then that psu may no longer be atx standard and could be dangerous to use if its been re-wired.
google its model to see if its ATX standard which may also reveal where it came from originally. Could also google the ATX standard and see if it still matches up pin wise.
Its technically possible that its atx standard wiring layout just with that weird split for some server or oem machine
A normal ATX power supply should only split off 4 pins for compatibility with older standards.
Nice pick linux mint
Ebay pay you back get contract with Ebay they will step in for you so Goodluck 😉 👍
Linux alot more suitable these day's for a daily tasking I usually use KDE desktop environment terminal
im sure ive had a case with those purple/green pci-e bracket clip things, guess what i removed them as well, just a pain in the a"", i think had those on the Thermaltake Tai Chi Case. Sorry you ended up giving away your RX 480 card, still if you get that RX 5700 XT working im sure it wont bother you so much.
I just need to dig out one of my previous project computers and steal the power supply lol, I have a 650 watt PSU somewhere
i´m not saying anything but we can´t see the gpu well connected to the display cable
That's fair, If this happens again, I'll have to adjust the camera angle next time
i recently bought a used hd 7770 2 gb gpu locally for 50 bucks buyer said it works, got it home and plugged it in to an old system that had 485 watt power supply all it did was click on then shut off then on again and then fan s at 200 percent, so i tried a 550 watt power supply that tested good, powered on the system it booted but no post beep and no display on the screen, not either dvi, display port of hdmi .... so it s just parts or wall art now .. seller is on vaction but i sent him a few messages as he had it listed as working , then again it facebook marketplace ..
As much as I love the HD 5xxx 6xxx and 7xxx series, I have no luck with longevity of them lol. It's a real shame, as some of them are really beautiful cards!
i has some point Ahtlon 1700+ 1.466 mhz 2002.
great video but why didnt you use th os/shiled?
@@travis9886 that is because I didn't have it lol, when I bought the motherboard, it didn't come with one
I was wondering if I could ask you a question LSAS. I have recently been testing some of my ancient hardware and ran into a snag. I am currently wanting to test the performance of AM3+ CPUs in Windows XP and Windows 7 with benchmarks/games from 2001- 2014. I have a pretty nice 990fx sabertooth r2.0 board that has been running my FX8350 for the past 8 years. I swapped my FX6300 over without a reinstall and everything has started to wig out. Like 3dmark03 won't complete, 3dmark vantage won't complete; but HL2 lost coast, just cause 2, FEAR, Quake 4, Doom 3, Crysis, Far cry 2, Arkham city, metro 2033 redux, and mafia 2 all complete their benchmark runs. I'm kinda concerned because that 990fx board is the nicest AM3+ board I have. Do you think it is because I didn't do a fresh install of windows after changing the CPU?
Good question! Did you run any updates after the CPU swap? It *should* be fine to do a straight swap, but AM3 in general was a really weird time for AMD. I actually have a 990fx sabertooth around here somewhere... Best I can suggest is running updates, and maaaaybe reinstall if that doesn't help. I've (mostly) not had any issues with swapping CPUs without reinstalling, but again, AM3 and AM3+ was a weird time for SMD. It may be wise to try going into the BIOS and loading the defaults, or even a BIOS update, if you aren't on the latest, as it may simply be that the BIOS has trouble loading the microcode for some CPUs after swaps.
Best of luck, let me now what happens!
@LowSpecActionSquad yeah, cleared the cmos, reinstalled the graphics drivers, and swapped ram. There was something funky with the mounting pressure of the hyper 212 I was using. But swapping to the amd latch style cooler stopped it bsod-ing, the computer still just shuts off. If feel as though it could be 3 things at this point. 1) I broke the FX6300 with the mounting pressure or bios settings right after the swap, 2) I damaged the board with mounting pressure issue, 3) it is actually all software and a fresh install will fix everything.
I guess I am going to work backwards, and start with a fresh install.
I have 3 AM3+ boards at the moment, an asus 780g board, the 990fx sabertooth, and a gigabyte 970a that has 8+2 vrm. So it isn't the end of the world, but at the same time I'd like to keep the 990fx.
@LowSpecActionSquad well it is either the board or my graphics card wasn't seated all the way. I swapped motherboards, reinstalled windows xp, all the drivers and updates, and re-ran 3dmark03. It finished, and it got a score of 85655. That's lower than I expected, but hey I'll take it.
It's been a bad month on ebay for me too, I bought a cib radeon x1900x that was doa, got a refund, bought an nvidia 8800gts and the seller canceled the sale, now I bought another 8800gts that will hopefully work 😂
Holy cow that's terrible luck! If you can't get anything to work out, get in contact with me, I might have either an x1850 XT or an 8800 gt(s?) that I know work, just have to dig them out
How the hell someone can have that many sub 600w power supplies I dont know
@skiddipskibidisigmarizzler I've been scavenging parts out of the trash for years lol, most of the computers I build are pretty low power and don't really need anything above like 200 watts. It doesn't take much to run a 65 watt CPU and a hard drive, even if you add a basic graphics card like a GT 1030.
Plus, I also deal with vintage systems a lot, and some of these old power supplies are better than modern power supplies when dealing with vintage systems, as they can handle more wattage on the 5v and 3.3v rails, which is important for vintage systems
