In 1973, Israel established the Agranat Commission to investigate the failures of the Yom Kippur War. The commission blamed several Israeli military officers for failing to anticipate the war. Calls are now being made in Israel to create a similar commission to investigate the military and intelligence failure to anticipate the Hamas attack on October 7. A commission of inquiry investigating the failure is a failure. It relies on the false notion that failure can always be prevented. Finding faults with certain individuals only reinforces that notion. Israel is afraid to investigate the real issues: Why is it not able to make peace? Does Israel’s occupation and apartheid over the Palestinians have anything to do with Hamas attacking Israel? Can a Jewish state always prevent attacks? Is a Jewish state good for the Jews? Why has Israel been in constant wars for 76 years and beyond? Is military superiority always possible? Israel will choose to investigate technical issues and find individuals to blame but will not blame itself for creating a precarious position for the Jewish people to begin with.
