I don't even consider BMW motorcycles "pricy" for two reasons, 1) most of the other manufacturers (including Asian) have all become more expensive. 2) you get what you pay for. There's noting this bike needs to be enjoyed. Forget about your farkles, and buying exhausts, and all that other nonsense and just ride with the sun on your face. Just purchased a 2018 BMW R1200RT yesterday, replacing my 2016 BMW R1200GSA. Previous Bikes include a 2014 BMW R1200GS, and a 2012 K1600GT, among a host of bikes prior to this. Took the RT out today for a 220-mile ride, and I can tell you that I came home not feeling ANY pain, and totally relaxed. This is THE most comfortable BMW I've owned to date. Aside from that, I LOVE the boxer motor. Gobs, and Gobs of mid-range. The best thing about this bike vs the K1600's (also awesome) is the fact that the boxer's center of gravity is much, much lower. K1600 is so top heavy, R1200RT is not.
Got a 2005 one three years ago. I'm 33 now. 😂 Had a really hard time switching from my VFR800, thought I'm really too young for this travel bomber, but I always tend to say old people know, what's good, and they didn't disappoint with this one. 😂
Thanks for posting I enjoyed watching it. I have just changed from a 2009 GS to a Honda Crosstourer DCT and whilst I love the V4 engine I am really missing the character of the Boxer twin. When I can , without my wife knowing, I really want to get an RT although it will have to be an earlier one. Just in case your not aware of them these are three good YT posters Wildbad, TMF & teapotone. Well worth a look at. Wife and I was in Quebec a couple of years ago but sadly we were on a coach. Stay safe.
STOPsign, so two months in and I’m loving it. Plenty of power for the road. Very light and agile to me. I’m coming off a steady diet of Harley Touring bikes. Compared to the Harley the RT is almost too light. Wind effects the RT much more than the Harley. It took me a bit to adjust to the lighter steering but I’m use to it now. Now I can see how folks can see a Harley as almost un rideable. The two bikes take a different approach for sure. I need some crash bars and highway pegs for the RT. A 300 mile trip to the Texas Hill country almost did my knees in. No way to stretch out on the RT like you can on the Harley. My girlfriend says she’s much more comfortable on the RT. And the added benefit to her to be able to see the speedometer. Haha. Not that it keeps me in check.
JH, That was quite the transition from Harley to BMW but I'm happy to hear that you like it. And I'm glad you brought up 'wind effects' because I have to agree with you on that 100%. I was surprised to get as much wind buffeting as I did when I get the bike up to higher speeds on the freeways and highways. It's not unbearable and I've learned to adjust but I suspect that the front fairing that does a great job of protecting the rider probably plays a part in that buffeting effect. Luckily at lower speeds, no issues. Additionally, I also agree with you about highway pegs. I find my legs getting a little cramped and need stretching after being in the saddle for awhile but I need to do some research on this because I don't see a good place to mount them unless they mount to the engine crash bars, which in my case (short legs) doesn't seem like it would be a comfortable fit. Lastly, I haven't carried a passenger on the back yet but with the top case I purchased that has an integrated back rest, a passenger should be fairly comfy back there and able to see the speedometer very well which doesn't bother me a bit because I ALWAYS ride within the speed limit..... kinda, sorta, well - most of the time... almost. :o) Happy riding on your RT!
Hey Grumpy I almost bought one of these but I bought the Triumph Trophy SE instead. The price for this bike in Alberta was $30K which was ridiculous in my opinion. I paid $20K for my bike with the top case plus GST. I couldn't be happier, the BMW dealers are not the greatest in Alberta. The bike looks great though, BMW makes a fine machine but they are starting to get out of control with their pricing just like HD. Ride safe and happy Canada Day from Alberta!!!
Picked up an ex-demo RT2014 (LC) eight months ago (a lot cheaper than a new one) after owing the 1200RS & 800GT and was surprised with how flickable it is when your up and running, the weight just disappears. Took it down to Cornwall (UK) and it handle all the twisty roads with ease. It even handles itself well as a commuter bike into London. Gear box is a bit clunky (well its a 2014 boxer model) and has no quick shifter but frankly that's just a gimmick (IMO). All in all its one of the best bikes ive owned and dose every thing well and without complaint.
I think the clunkiness sort of disappeared in the years with the LC motor. My first 2014 Boxer was kinda crunchy, the 2nd, a 2016 BMW R1200GSA was not as crunchy, and my brand new 2018 R1200RT is pretty much as smooth as silk. I notice it with the quickshifter pro more than anything else.
Grumpy, :o) Thanks for the video. There's a reason many police departments use the BMW RT as their motorcycle of choice for law enforcement. If you're not going off-road, like your comfort / convenience, and prefer the simplicity of a boxer twin engine with a touch of sportiness, this might be the bike you'd want to choose. Pricey? YES! Do you get what you paid for? That depends on what is important to you. Only the buyer themselves can answer that question. For me, the 2018 BMW R1200RT hit all the right buttons and that's why I ride it.
you prolly dont care but does someone know a method to log back into an Instagram account? I stupidly lost the password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Alexis Messiah thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and Im trying it out atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Cool video, and enjoyed the narration and feedback as you were riding. I live in Southern California (San Diego area) and we have many more days of good riding weather, so I'll be thinking about the choice of clothing especially if I go cruising out on any of our highways through the Sierra's (up 'Old 395' up to Lake Tahoe, etc.). Right now I'm looking at 2007 R1200RT that's in great shape, has 40K miles, and at $5K is a bargain. I thought about the 'street cred' of the BMW, but now that I'm an "older" guy, I just don't care. Plus, my GF wants a little comfort when riding on a cycle too, so this model appeals to both of us. One of the things I've heard about these boxers is if they're well-maintained they can go for many miles. All the reviews I've seen or read have the same message; the riders love this bike, so I'm going to 'pull the trigger' on purchasing one.
I got mine in january and i can confirm it is a great bike...the only "issue", since I'm coming from a 2017 GSA are the suspensions quite stiff even in soft. But, in general, is very close to the "perfect" one. Will see what the germans have done wiith the new 1250.
Hi bud from south africa. I was wondering if you managed to test ride the bagger and what is your opinion on that bike compared to the RT. Safe riding buddy
I have a review up of the Grand America... the bagger with a top case.. I really liked it, but between it and the RT, I'd take the RT.. its lighter, cheaper, and maintenance is much much cheaper. Thanks for watching!
I have the 2014 model which had 16k miles on it, and the gears are clunky as hell and the clutch is all over the place. I feel the worm gear engaging when I have the clutch fully pulled in and I blip the throttle.
Thank you for this video. I am currently lusting for an RT but haven’t had a chance to ride one yet, this video gives a pretty good feel for the bike. I moved from an interceptor to a goldwing and I think the RT might be a good compromise between the two. The goldwing is just to heavy for me to handle confidently.
When I wanted to demo a new bike I went to the Seattle BMW dealer and after he explained the features and switches on the bike he said "see you when you get back". This dog and pony ride in a group and don't pass the leader way of trying out a new bike is so old school. It is also the way I bought my last car, he just threw me the keys and said "see you in a while".
How does the bike feel at low speeds? is it cumbersome to handle or not, how does it feel at high speeds, is it well planted, is it more stable then the general bike? how does it turn, is it easy to turn or does it naturally turn in with little effort. Once you get going does it feel as heavy as it looks or does the weight disappear like on the GS Adventure. Electronics we don't care about, actually we do, but we care only once we like the way the bike feels and handles to us. Thank you.
Because of the lower center of gravity of the boxer motor, the bike is easily maneuverable at low speeds. It's not cumbersome to handle, has a bit more weight on the top in comparison to a 1200GSA, but NOTHING like the super top heavy K1600. This bike is not taxing on any level to maneuver or handle. The GSA is a little more nimble but nowhere as smooth, or as comfortable on the long haul like the RT. Moter seems tamer too, perhaps muted a bit. Likely because and gearing from what I noted. Super punchy in the mid-range.
End of this year will have new Boxster engine for R1200RT, replace currently one, with expected increase 10% horse power with VVT tech and large LCD screen display replace currently meter display.. mostly sell in 2019 model.
I have a K1600GT 2017 with the NAV VI and can confirm you don't need a memory card to have the GPS, bike and communication device connected. Here is a forum discussion about all the different ways of connecting all of those together. www.k1600forum.com/forum/bmw-k1600-bluetooth-audio/170194-proper-order-pairing.html. Great video. I personally prefer the K1600GT but looking at the R1200RT as an option for my girlfriend since it's lighter. By the way the K has those wings you can open on the fairing to get more air when it's hot. To bad they did not have those on this bike.
Thanks for that link, will try that out. The RT really needs those wings. I still need to try a GSA and GT, also there are strong rumours that the new boxer engine may appear on the 2019 RT, 1250cc, VVT, slightly more power, and a new TFT screen. Thanks for watching and ride safe!
currently ride the f800gt but love to have a r1200rt or the r1250rt only seeing k1600b and grand american lately; guess 2020 has messed up distribution
Seems like a nice bike, but for similar money you can get the new Goldwing, which we all know will be much more dependable and comfortable. You also get 4 additional cylinders.
I have a 2015 R1200R, also. I love it, love it. But....I want a little more power, a little more comfort, and some side-bags. I thought about the R1200RT but again I want a little more power, so now I'm looking at the S1000XR, except I'm told there's a vibration problem. The K series are just too big/heavy/old-man for me. So I'm stuck not knowing what to do.
The XR vibration issues were largely fixed with the '17 model, and you could also swap bar-end weights. It's a taller bike though, and it has a chain, so there's that.
Yeah - love my chain-less drive, but I am yearning for just a bit more power. Can't get over it. There's a low-suspension XR coming to the dealer soon. If you're right about the vibration fix, then it might be my next ride. I'll definitely miss my R1200R though, but its time to move on. Great video review - thanks for responding
Grumpy man have you ridden a new 2018 goldwing ? I like the looks of the BMW but I'm short and the new Goldwing seems like it might be a better choice for me . Haven't had a chance to ride either one yet ! GODBLESS
I haven't had a chance to try an '18 Goldwing yet, but its really not the same class.. the GW is a lot heavier, and a lot more expensive. I have sat on a GW at the dealer though, and you don't really feel the weight.
Nice video. I bought my '06 RT (8 years ago) because I wanted a lighter bike than my Harley softail. The RT is top heavy when at stop. Questionable riding position for long distance. Handles well, at speed. Smooth power is excellent. ABS is awesome. Too tall for most riders. If you decide to buy this high tech piece of high performance, make sure you get a long WARRANTY. You don't want anything BMW makes (reliability and fixablilty), that is out of warranty. BMW (not necessarily the dealers) is a crap company to deal with. Period. The newer BMW's are designed to keep the dealers happy after your purchase, not you. (I hate to say it, from a center of gravity, riding position, and RELIABILITY point of view, my FXR is looking a lot better, seriously). Repeat after me "can-bus is evil, OBDII is good". Gimmicks are fun. Buy value. Thanks.
crazy Joe Yeah, that’s a point I haven’t really considered with their bikes. Known point with their cars and I stay away from them. Gold Wings are reliable but too smooth for me. Seems odd to say that I guess but I still have my 96 Wing that I bought new after leaving Harley’s for a few years. Returned to Hogs in 2011, just a machine I prefer these days. Even with all of the headaches, I still prefer 2 cylinders. But then I like old John Deere tractors as well. Haha.
Hey goats, I like (and have made money with) high tech. But, the modern companies not only make unreliable complicated parts( systems) but they make them as packages that you cannot rebuild (all intentionally). They all do it but BMW reminds me of the old Jaguars (over engineered pieces of crap) when you could get them to run they were great. I LIKE government mostly. OBDII connectors are mandated by law for cars, but not for bikes. Sucks. Can-bus is a high tech scam on the public (thanks to Bosch and Mercedes). The fact that the digital displays don't show errors is a crime (especially when you are in crappy location). It's a damned shame I can't buy a light-weight (1200cc) touring (real bags and trunk, like the RT) that is simpler and reliable(from Harley). I had a R1200CL. A generally quality built bike. Very comfortable on the highway, but the geometry of the front end and the ABS made it almost dangerous at parking lot speed. BMW flopped. The RT was a good attempt at light-weight touring, I just don't know where you are to put your yaya's on a long trip (at the riding angle)(yuk yuk). Great machine otherwise.. if you have an active warranty. I think that's more than enough from me. 2006 R1200RT still not running(ABS), 1991 FXR running like a champ. All older tractors are awesome. Take care.
Grumpy Man I think it’s must be an optional lower one as all the RTs I have seen have a larger one. I think I might get too hot with the standard screen.
I don't even consider BMW motorcycles "pricy" for two reasons, 1) most of the other manufacturers (including Asian) have all become more expensive. 2) you get what you pay for. How does the center of gravity compare to a GL1100 Gold Wing?

You got that right!
That’s an awesome track to try out the speakers with!🤟🤟🤟

Wow great video and nice Canadian landscape testing German motorbike. I got mine two weeks ago.
I just picked one up about a week ago. Early birthday present. So far so good.

Hey Grumpy
I almost bought one of these but I bought the Triumph Trophy SE instead. The price for this bike in Alberta was $30K which was ridiculous in my opinion. What about the vibration on seat or handlebars ? Thanks
How does the bike feel at low speeds? is it cumbersome to handle or not, how does it feel at high speeds, is it well planted, is it more stable then the general bike? how does it turn, is it easy to turn or does it naturally turn in with little effort. It handles great at low speed, a bit better than the GSA
Take care.
I like the review, but out you keep referring to your bike yet do not tell us what you have? how are we supposed to know.
I think I mention that I have the R1200R? If not, my apologies.
One suggestion ok may be 2. Complete your comments and Prepare for the topic you discuss.
2014 was de eerste Rt1200lc
How does it compare to Yamaha FJR1300
I haven't rode an FJR, but it feels slimmer than the RT, but with a higher center of gravity.
out after 7:46 👋
What screen is on that bike - seems shorter than other RTs
Khilan Shah it’s the stock screen as far as I know, unless they installed an optional one on the demo bike
Grumpy Man I think it’s must be an optional lower one as all the RTs I have seen have a larger one. I think I might get too hot with the standard screen.
Khilan Shah I was quite hot with this screen, was 30c when did the ride
Grumpy Man yeah I saw you saying in the video. I get hot generally when I ride, but in the uk it’s not 30 degrees often
I am really admired of Canadian who has bi-language
dommage tu aurais du continuer tout en français ;-) pouce bleu quand meme
Oui, je devrais faire des video en francais.. j'ai deja penser a ca, mais pas certain qu'il avait un marche pour ca..
Ah Quebec. Roads always under construction. Comme dirait Rogatien, de l'espace tout ce que tu vois c'est la muraille de Chine pis les cônes du Quebec.
