    I've owned the same watch for more years than I can remember (10+years). Purchased it specifically for work (bartender). I wanted an inexpensive watch I could beat up and if I break it, big deal, I only spent $89 on it. Water and alcohol kill watch bands so I've had to replace the band twice. I have beat/banged the snot out of it and it has never let me down. The design is simple, classic and timeless. It's a great chronograph and you will never find a better watch for the money.

      @@RelativeTime I'm sure he replaced the strap, I bet you'd bet on a strap change as well if it were your money on the line wouldn't you my friend?
      I just grabbed one off a good friends for about two hundred bucks. He bought it new for $240 plus tax on Amazon from an authorized dealer but needed some money so I was extremely happy to get something out of the money I lent them. I didn't expect anything in return especially for such little money lent.
      Anyways this looks like a nice little classy run forever solar watch that I can wear anywhere especially with the NATO strap or leather.
      Do you still wear yours

    Spot on review! I am a Citizen fan and everything you said is correct. Totally agree on the "hollowness" of the pushers. This is common amongst the less expensive line, but goes away when you move up price ranges. I find the date hard to find but useable. And the strap is the first thing you should change when you buy the watch. This watch is a simple but great tool. The large numbers are easy to read in low light and it is extremely durable.

    • @RelativeTime

      Very well said. There are better watches, and better Citizens for sure. But at the right price, this is incredibly hard to beat for an everyday watch.

    First watch I bought was a Seiko SNK809. Stopped working after 2 days 😞 I then picked up a Citizen Bm8180-03e(which will now always have a special spot in my heart). Gotten a Seiko Solar dress watch and a Citizen diver Eco Drice since, but I'm iffy about Automatic. Was going to get the Kuroshio 64 Citizen, but talked myself out because st 350 it has no sapphire.

    Owning about 40 mechanical time pieces, I used to have low opinions of battery-dependent watches, but that is until I studied up on Citizen Eco-drive watches, and I was hooked. Now I own 9 Citizen Eco-drives. I'm impressed with the build quality, and most likely will buy more.

      @@RelativeTime I like mostly military-styled watches. I ignored battery-operated watches for many years. Every few years my wife's watches would stop working 'cause they needed batteries. I made sure that would never happen to me but solar-powered watches? Now that is revolutionary. My Eco-drives now stand at 12 pieces after yesterday. Great review & I agree about the value here! I was fortunate to pick one of these up for $83 bucks last year, and it's one of my favorites in my rotation. I love the simple, yet elegant, easy to read dial, 100m of WR, just enough lume, and being solar powered for the sale price I paid makes it almost perfect. I do hate the original strap, and replaced with a tan leather nato, so now it's perfect! ;-)

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  6 років тому +2

      A leather NATO would look nice. That's probably the same time I bought this one.
      I just happened to be at the Mall the a few weeks ago with a good buddy. He isn't into watches, but we walked past the counter and I just had to look in it for a second. Out of all the Citizens on display he actually picked this one that he liked. So there is something to be said for a simple elegant dial.
      I'll probably give him this one as a present. Cheers!

      @@RelativeTime That's very nice of you to gift it to your friend! Not surprised it was the one that caught his attention either. The white on black is very simple, basic & elegant, even though it takes up the whole dial. Incredibly easy to read, and the 100m WR makes it a great weekend sports watch with a rubber or Nato strap. Put a nice leather strap on it and it works for the office too in my opinion. Being Solar just seals the deal. A great value regardless, but a real steal when on sale!

    I've always preferred light, thin, and smaller diameter watches for the reason you state. That is, you forget it's there on the wrist. And for $80 when on sale it is a very good value.
    I have an early Pulsar solar watch that belonged to my father. It will still run when placed in direct sunlight but only for a few minutes if worn on the wrist. Unfortunately to replace the power cell inside is an expensive proposition.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  6 років тому

      I have a late 1990s pulsar solar. Still running fine, but battery life is less then it used to be. I haven't looked into swapping out the power cell, the replacement citizen ones aren't too bad. But it's probably worth it just to replace it when it dies.

    • @Retired_Gentleman
      @Retired_Gentleman 6 років тому

      @@RelativeTime My father's is a very early model. I like the look of the watch with it being dark grey stainless steel with subtle gold accents and a diameter of 33-34mm. The solar panel is actually a band around the outer rim of the watch face, but under the crystal. It blends in with the watch very well. The bracelet clasp was broken so I put it on a black leather band and it suits quite nicely.
      I do plan to have the "solar battery" replaced if I can. It's just a question of getting it done.

    I have owned this watch for a long time also now and it's an awesome bargain. I wanted something that gave a nod to old trench watch and the numerals do that.. My favourite "go to" watch... Ahead of the game Military watch revival also. Replaced the strap also for basic military.

    @SlapShotRegatta22 4 роки тому +1

    The lume pips are not applied. They are painted on just like the numerals, etc. When talking about watches, something is "applied" when an independent piece is attached to the dial and therefore becomes raised above the dial surface itself.

    I'm of the mind that the 24-hour subdial is pointless, but I'm excited to check out your video about using it as a compass!
    I'm torn between my GMT Nighthawk and a field watch I can't remember the model of (I'll dig it up later) for favorite Citizen watch. Both have subtle details you'd normally expect in a more expensive watch. I don't like many of Citizen's designs, but when one hits: wow!

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому +2

      The compass technique makes it nice to have on a field watch. Although other then that, and when setting the date / time, it's not that useful. Some people sahs the watch is 41mm case diameter without crown. Are you sure about measurements?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  6 років тому +1

      Well Citizen's website says its a 39mm. So I'd say I'm closer.
      But to double check... This one is a little tricky to measure because there is a lot going on and hard to find a good place to measure from.
      So Going from 9 to 3 there is a small ledge above the crown, and thats 39.3. If I go from ~1:45 to ~8:15 there is a small gap between lugs and pushers. Thats coming out around 39.5
      If I go from 2:30 to 8:30, including the crown guards it's almost 41. So that may be what they are getting.
      Otherwise measuring the crown itself I'd say it's fairly close to 3.5mm. So ~43-3.5 = 39.5
      Hope that helps. Cheers!

      @@atifghafoor6258 the two-step ticking is typically a low battery warning. You can try leaving it in the window all day. It won't really hurt it every once in a while.
      The main thing to look for is if it goes back to a single tick that means it's getting some charge. But if it never stops doing the two tick it's got a problem

    Would this mineral glass scratch easily?

      Complicated question, all depends on what you are doing day to day.
      In relative terms, it is far more scratch resistant then Polymer, but not as resistant as sapphire. Yet it is more impact resistant and less prone to shattering then Sapphire.
      Generally, all mineral crystal watches will have some scratches after 5-10 years.
      Sapphire is the preferred crystal for watches, but you will have a harder time finding it on a Citizen in this price range. You can always replace the current mineral crystal with a sapphire in the future.

      Mine looks great after two years of wear. I don’t baby it, and while the bezel is pretty dented and scratched I don’t see any viable scratches on the crystal.

    Eventually, the solar charged lithium battery will die; maybe even sooner than you expect. Finding the right replacement can be tricky.

      Citizen still offers support and are pretty good at giving info. I contacted them to find out info about the crystal dimensions and they gave me a diagram with most the info I asked for. Im confident a replacement battery is not a problem. Mine has been going for around 5 years no problem.
