What is Bird Migration?
The world migration comes from the latin migratus which means movement but also refers to a geographic change. Migration is when a group of living creatures undertake a relocation, it could be seasonal, temporary or permanent.
There are approximately 10000 species of birds in the world and more than half could be considered migratory. And out of these 5000 species of birds not 2 migrate in the same way. Their migrations are all different. Isn’t this extraordinary?
We have been fascinated by animal migrations for centuries and we have studied bird migrations for over 3000 years. It is mentioned in the Bible, it is mentioned in the Coran, it is part of Polynesian legends, it is part of Greek myths. Homer, Aristotle were talking about them. Depiction of migratory birds could be found on old Egyptian paintings!
