I always like to see different methods of finding ancient skeletons but whenever I see a video I always remember I found one within my first hour of playing and I barely knew what it was. I've also found two in one ashen winds event after the boss spawned them
I've found quite a few on forts, Tribute Peak, and various islands doing OOS or just messing around, mainly solo. The ones I've found with my crew have been when the crew is separated, usually one member is on the boat while the others are scattered nearby. They always spawn near ya so if you hear that distinct music, start spinning around until you spot it cuz it's close. Sea fortresses are also a great place to find them, I've had quite a few of them spawn on me during the fortress and right after I've finished it and am in the process of collecting loot. You have approx. 20 seconds to kill it or it'll disappear back into the ground.
I will say this, I don't think they spawn in the spot of a pairing of skeletons. They have their own spawn mechanics. Because with the heart of fire tall tale down that stops all pve from spawning in the non devil's roar areas EXCEPT ancient skeles. So they are their own entity and a way to farm them would to afk on an island with that tall tale down so nothing else spawns like ocean crawlers or skeles, just for convenience so you can just afk with a pair of headphones on listening for the ancient skele sound. Just a tip if you are only looking for them but it's also just as viable to pve normally and find them.
A lot of the Ancient Skellies I've found have been on various islands. However, during the last Community Day that had increased Ancient Skelly Spawns, most of them were at Skelly Forts
Only got the game a day or two ago, played solo day 1, with friends day two, and just at the start of our playing, we got a 500 skeleton. This is the only good luck I've ever had, and I didn't know they even existed until that moment
I found a ancient skelly when doing the "Heart of Fire" tall tale. It was around the skeleton fighting portions of the tall tale before and after you get the chest of rage.
I've ran into quite a few ancient skeletons probably about 5 or 6, while just doing ashen Athena's in the volcano area of the map. Going back and forth between all of the islands around there doing the quests for Athena's they just randomly spawn in, but I have also ran into a few maybe 3 while doing fort of the fortunes.
Could you see if the coral skellies that constatly spawn from digging up the siren song key/chest/skull increase the chance of seeing an ancient skelly?
I feel like I found more ancient skeletons back when I used to solo sloop, before I found friends to play with more often. I started playing back in the beginning of October, so about 9 months or so, and I have been around when 10+ ancient skeletons have popped. I have killed 7 myself. The first time one had popped was like my second month into playing, I was on an inactive skeleton fort, I had gone there to "set foot on every island" and decided to loot the barrels while I was there. It popped, and I heard the noise first, and I didn't know what it was, and thought I was hearing a gold skeleton, so I actually ran towards the water to grab a bucket, then I turned and ran towards it as it buried itself back in the ground. Like a week later I encountered another one (in what was to be a series of like 4 or 5 I encountered over the course of like 3 weeks). After I encountered that next one and killed it, and realized what it was, I felt dumb for letting that first get away. I was spoiled getting so many so early, because now its been months since I've last seen one and at this point I've got over 1500 hours into the game now, so yeah, I play quite a lot, especially going back a few months. Out of the ones I encountered, only like 2 or 3 were on skeleton forts, 1 was on a ghost fortress, and 1 was in the shores of gold. The rest were just on random islands. Some of those were probably during OOS voyages.
I've found 7, only one of which was an ancient fortune (200-400 coins). It was on Kraken's Fall, while looking for the vault entrance. The rest were ancient stashes. My first stash was on Plunder Valley, while doing The Art of the Trickster tall tale. Two of the stashes were on sea fortresses, one in the middle of the waves and one while loading the loot to harpoon it onto my ship. One stash was found while just sitting on Sailor's Bounty while just sitting around at the end of my session, wishing one would spawn. Another was on a regular island, I forget which. I also forget where the other one was, but I know it must have been on an island, perhaps Plunder Valley again. I haven't spent much time on sea fortresses, and since 2 out of my 7 have been found on those, I would say there is some truth to those carrying increased rates. I have never found one on a skeleton fort, though as it is said, it is incredibly random. That's my experience with these funny skellies (I have a little over 400 hours in game for reference).
I've found four ancient skelies total and I encountered a quick succession spawn of two at the fort of fortune; I've only been playing for about six months and I already have over 1,250 ancient coins; love the video btw
I've only ever gotten 4 ancient skellies, and it was always during tall tales. Once while helping a friend get the Ashen Curse, and the other three were all at Tribute Peak. Essentially, three of the five times I replayed Shores of Gold for the golden curse, I'd find one.
I got three tier 3 ancient skeletons back to back to back during my first 3 FOTD. We were allied with a crew that was farming FOTD and they were definetly jealous xd
The first ancient skeleton I ever found was at a sea fort during Season 6 community day. I was setting my loot down on the little pulley platform when the skeleton spawned right next to me, and I got around 500 coins from it
I had 28 Skeletons spawn on me The best 2 methods is to be on fotd, Skull forts or shores of gold The best method is to be on fotd or skull forts and stacking loot this is how I got 17 of my ancient Skeletons The second best being at shores of gold The reason why they spawn more often is due to the size of the island. I got 5 on here. The other I got from islands
I seen my first one the other day at a raid on a sea fort, It reminded me of a treasure goblin form Diablo. Unfortuantely I was busy saying wtf is that and it despawned before I could kill it lol
A pretty niche use, but a decent way to farm ancient skeletons if you are a fishing vessel, if you have the Heart of Fire tall tale active and no active voyages, emergant enemies will not spawn. However, this does not prevent ancient skeletons from spawning. It is unknown if this causes them to spawn at a slower rate due to the lack of other enemies spawning, but it does allow you to be a lot lazier when trying to farm ancient skeletons.
I played on 2 days last week, and I found an ancient skeleton on BOTH days. The first one appeared while tucking on normal fort (5 players in total on that fort). The second one appeard while solo playing, RIGHT AFTER I opened the vault of a sea fortress.
I've gotten 4 (of wich I only got to kill 3) ancient skellies. On all ocasions, I was doing Gold Hoarder voyages, just digging up chests. The fourth one, I had just gotten to an island, dug up my chest and went on my way, when I looked back (after setting sale) and looked at the island, there was, the fourth skellie runnnig on the shore, soon to be gone!
My first ancient was within 10 or so minutes of first playing, it was on rapier cay. I was just getting tons of skeleton spawns because I was taking so long to loot the stuff from the captains and tutorial voyages.
I was in a full crew fishing for some fish after we had cleared out a fortress. After 10 minutes or so we had encountered an ancient skelly and then another 15 minutes we had another one spawn. We were considering staying there but one of us had to hop off so we agreed on selling our fish first.
I got one ancient skelly at sea fort.. and on community day we farmed it at fort and on island.. Managed to get 2.5k ancients and around same 2.5M regular in one session.. Got it on video as well.
It is a random number algorithm. to force the spawn faster, complete forts, shores of gold, and order of souls skeleton crew missions, which I've found to work faster, especially with fast traveling .
I've actually had the opposite experience. I've had 4 ancient skeletons in 160hrs of play time, and 3 of them were when I was screwing around on random islands doing things like gold-hoarder stashes or skeleton orders. The last one was on a seafort just after clearing it. Also none of them spawned in place of another skeleton in a normal spawn, they all arrived on their own with no triggering event or other skeletons. They were also all while solo-slooping, despite ~80% of my playtime being on 4 player galleons with friends.
I once got 3 ancient skeletons in a 2 day period. The first was a random spawn on Snake Island. Brig crew, Gold Horder Vault Voyage. The second was the same session, we'd formed an 8 person alliance to do Glitterbeard, then all 3 crews went to an Ashen Winds together at Shipwreck Bay and one spawned almost immediately after we had killed the Ashen Lord. (One of the other crews actually got the kill sadly so no ancient coins). The 3rd was the very next day, I was solo fighting an Ashen Winds at Marauder's Arch and one spawned in during the fight. And I haven't seen one since. I think I used up all my luck.
I can say having only gotten 12 ancient skellies with 1,500 hours and 6 of those having come from community day increased spawn rates 2 in a single day is insanely good. To add on to this even more 4/6 of those skellies spawned on a fort during that single community day so this further proves the theory. If Rare continues these community day increase spawn rates definitely do forts and fortresses if you want ancient coins. If you want gold as well stack fotds since they’re way easier.
I found 3 ancient skeletons in a single day less than a week ago. I made a friend on the server and we allianced. We started fotd stacking. After stacking like 11 forts and seeing no one come and fight us we can to the conclusion we were the only 2 on the server. Idk how server merging works exactly but we spent another 12 hours getting gold and I never saw another player. So with us being the only place where enemies CAN spawn. I think it increased the chances of the skeletons spawning. Leading to us finding 3 of those skeletons in a single day
I've only seen one, on Crescent Isle. I have been doing voyages, not really forts. So I think your theory holds correct. I'm going to start doing forts and see what the effect is over time.
I've caught them two times since ~1000hrs, sunken grove, while doing new quest for cursed chests, and like two years ago on, you guessed it, shores of gold :)
So forts overall have an increased chance of spawning ancient skeletons. Since they’re the only mob that can spawn there! Meaning the only mob that will spawn on you in a fort will be an ancient skeleton
I’ve just gotten back into the game a week ago, I’ve found 3 so far within about 15 total hours of playtime. 2 on regular sea forts minutes after completion and one after farming kills on a skelly ship, after we killed about 50 skellies on a galleon the very next island we landed on spawned one right away
Just got one in season 10 after finishing a sea fort, loading up the downstairs loot, and returning to the top with the second key for the remainder; cute lil guy just popped out of the sea fort floor right in front of me.
I was grinding today SoG for the curse (got it today) and I found 2 ancient coin skeletons in like 3 hours or so. From what I've seen on the chart that I didn't knew, one was tier 2 and the other tier 1, but yeah, 2 of the ones I've seen were on SoG. Also, I once got one on a seafort. I didnt find it tough, he left before I could get to the correct floor. But yeah, on SoG I heard a lot of people seeing them at least once, so I would try there!
I spend a lot of time at sea fortresses and have never had an ancient skeleton spawn on one of them. However, I’ve had several spawn in the Shores of Gold when I’ve gone there to fish for pondies.
I've found 3 skeletons on the same session 😂 The first spawned once I went on Plunder Valley, 20 min later another spawned on the same island. Something like 30 minutes later we accidentally crashed the ship on Sandy Shallows and... a third skeleton spawned. 😮
Maurarders arch fort where the ashen winds boss will spawn has given me a total of 5 in the two years I've been playing, so I imagine if you get gold hoarder voyages and go digging there with this set up in mind that'd be pretty effective. Other then that it's been forts for every other one.
I can confirm 100% that ancient skeleton spawn rate is not affected by regular skeleton spawn rate. when you activate the Heart of Fire after arriving at the shores of gold, Ancient skellies will still spawn when regular ones will not, also ive gotten like 75%+ of my ancient skellies at the shores of gold
@@arqiu7632 yes, makes fishing up there a breeze, best place for Pondies, Splashtails(debatable with #3 pirates life Bayou) and treacherous plunder. Milestones are mega easy up there for these fish

I tend to find a lot of ancient skellies when my boat is not around, I often try to spice up my gameplay by scuttling my ship and adventuring on a rowboat. Maybe the ancient skellies are scared off by boats?
Several forts, fotd, active & not, fishing for pondies at Hidden Spring (fort), voyages on islands, one on Shores of Gold, Skull of the Siren Song (2 skellies within 20 mins of each other on diff islands). I’ve gotten 12-15 in total.
Best method, but also very rarely Happening is just waiting for the Community weekend. Did that once and combined with doing just fotds all day resulted in finding 8 in a single day of about 10 playtime
Had my last ancient skeleton spawn on a sea fort after I cleared it and had loaded the loot, was sitting around cooking a metric buttload of fish in the kitchen, and I heard him spawn on the ramparts outside.
I’ve only ever seen one ancient skeleton and it spawned behind me as I was listening to giant flame heart in the sky at the end of the Seabound soul tall tale
Few days ago, i got ancient skeleton at ghost fort. So, apperently, they can spawn there too, maybe ghost also counts as skeleton spawn, idk. Also, i was even more shocked, because it was tier 3 skeleton and i got 567 coins!
i was doing thieves haven runs with my friends on a brig/galleon for 6 days and i got 8 ancient skeletons back to back within that time and came out with almost 1000 ancient coins from it idk if its boosted or just luck but would suggest doing thieves haven runs
they spawn more at the shores of gold because it is the largest island in the game. it is based on island size, according to my sources. Thought it might be wrong.
I found 4 total, once doing an order of souls mission, second after a sea fort was complete and I was fishing, third at a live skelley fort and last at the shores of gold.
I once had an ancient skeleton spawn at a Spanish Seafort. The fott had already been cleared for a while and I was just fishing when he popped out of the ground
I was fishing on ashen reaches when an ancient skele popped up infront of me, Its safe to say that spending a long period of time on a larger island can do the trick,
Only one I've ever seen was on Thieves Heaven. I was running back to my ship and just reached the beach when I heard the sound and franticly looked around. It spawned a short ways up a hill.
For me, I found mine just randomly on an island. I was just collecting some items and out of nowhere. This guy appears. to go kill him since he was running away. I was like what’s weird with the skeleton. Why is it carrying a bag. when I killed it, I did get some stuff for sure like you said. It was definitely a tier one Now I will say I need to remember which island it was on, but I do remember that guy for sure
I was tucking on a FOTD once during S7's community day where the spawn rate was upped. Ancient Skelly spawned and I came out of my hiding spot and stole it then ran off
I’ve only found 3 ancient skeletons in my time on the seas back when forts megs and krakens were the only big things, 2 of them I found on the shores of gold while getting my gold curse and the third was in the cove in the very bottom left portion of the map
i might note just to clear up something that may confuse some, it doesnt need to specifically be in place of an enemy spawning, i have had a few at inactive skele forts, one at a finished ghost fort, and one at an active ghost fort mid wave i only add this because the way it was expressed in the video could make it almost sound like they only spawn in place of skeletons or enemies even though its not directly stated, figured i would clear some possible confusion
ive had at least 4 ancient skeletons spawn. 1 after a sea fortress was completed and i was loading up on the loot, 1 on a random island i was on for an athena emissary quest, 1 during heart of fire as i was clearing out the final skeleton fight section, and one so far back when i started playing i genuinely dont remember what we were doing.
I was doing shores of gold tall tale on community day for some reason and i found like 6 ancient skeletons that day, where 1 was tier 3(biggest luck ever)

The first ancient skeleton i found was at an inactive fort. I dont remember why i went there but someting with gunpowder keg.
I got scared but got it.
I used to find them all the time on athenaeum at the island with 3 ship entrances.
I was in a full crew fishing for some fish after we had cleared out a fortress. After 10 minutes or so we had encountered an ancient skelly and then another 15 minutes we had another one spawn. We were considering staying there but one of us had to hop off so we agreed on selling our fish first.
You can literally hear him stretching the video to 8 minutes in his voice.
They were also all while solo-slooping, despite ~80% of my playtime being on 4 player galleons with friends.
bro could i please get your luck? i have 400 hours and never seen a single one
Me and my friends have had 5 spawn on us the past week on random islands, loving it! 👌🏻😂
4 out of the 5 antient skelly's I've found have been right after clearing a skull fort of fof
I've caught them two times since ~1000hrs, sunken grove, while doing new quest for cursed chests, and like two years ago on, you guessed it, shores of gold :)
Im about to buy sot
It’s so good
Are captain keg staches definitely worth doing for ancient skeletons? They don't spawn skeletons they only bring you to forts
Can confirm, I've found them on the Shores of Gold, and also doing Gold Horder voyages on islands, and the odd Tall Tale too.
shore of gold? thats TT
Can I ask what pistol skin you’re using? An eye of reach? They look awesome buddy!
I started playing Sea of Thieves a while ago, and in the first 4 days I was playing, I found 3 ancient skeletons
I've found 3 skeletons on the same session 😂
The first spawned once I went on Plunder Valley, 20 min later another spawned on the same island.
Ancient coin farming is back? Let's goo
Sun out here ensuring that every fort you see this weekend is going to be busy!
Wait why do you active Heart of fire at shores of gold? Does that make it so the skeletons don’t spawn
@@arqiu7632 yes, makes fishing up there a breeze, best place for Pondies, Splashtails(debatable with #3 pirates life Bayou) and treacherous plunder. Milestones are mega easy up there for these fish
@@eyzmin does it need to be a specific checkpoint?
@@arqiu7632 there is only one for heart of fire, you go to the shores of gold, cancel the tall tale, then put up heart of fire's only checkpoint
@@eyzmin ok thanks
my friend has less than 100 hours and claims to have found a t3 and t1 ancient skeleton, he bought stuff with the ancient coins and I doubt he would lie about not buying them
I tend to find a lot of ancient skellies when my boat is not around, I often try to spice up my gameplay by scuttling my ship and adventuring on a rowboat. Maybe the ancient skellies are scared off by boats?
My daughter and I were simply doing treasure maps and happened upon islands that had skeleton spawns. Got two in one day.
Several forts, fotd, active & not, fishing for pondies at Hidden Spring (fort), voyages on islands, one on Shores of Gold, Skull of the Siren Song (2 skellies within 20 mins of each other on diff islands). I’ve gotten 12-15 in total.
I’ve found 5 ancient skeletons throughout my adventures, 2 on small island and 3 while doing Thieves Haven runs.
I found one today running a Veil voyage in the devils roar, it was probably just me striking it lucky but it was a nice find.
I’ve only ever seen one ancient skeleton and it spawned behind me as I was listening to giant flame heart in the sky at the end of the Seabound soul tall tale
I was stacking FOTD for 12 hours straight the other day and I dug up two, and thanks to this video, I found out that one of them was a t2
I managed to get 2 to spawn within a day at the Traitor's Fate Fort, had no idea they existed or how rare they were until i watched this video
Do you think that they will spawn in place of the skull of siren song skeletons?
I found 4 total, once doing an order of souls mission, second after a sea fort was complete and I was fishing, third at a live skelley fort and last at the shores of gold.
I once had an ancient skeleton spawn at a Spanish Seafort. The fott had already been cleared for a while and I was just fishing when he popped out of the ground
I have yet to find any, so far lol. I’m definitely going to be on the lookout now.
I found my first and only ancient coin skeleton during a legendary thieves haven run couple years back
I was fishing on ashen reaches when an ancient skele popped up infront of me, Its safe to say that spending a long period of time on a larger island can do the trick,
My first ancient skeleton was tier 3 (after Ashen Winds update), then next 1 with tier 2, and next 3 or 4 were tier 1 (~~season 2-5)
It was definitely a tier one
Now I will say I need to remember which island it was on, but I do remember that guy for sure
I was tucking on a FOTD once during S7's community day where the spawn rate was upped.
Ancient Skelly spawned and I came out of my hiding spot and stole it then ran off
found one in my first 30-35 hours and gave me 466 coins 😁😁
I got one from just after completing a FOF, and in the same day, just on a regular island (Shooting off boat to get extra stuff along the way).
I've seen 3(IIRC) 2 on random islands, maybe doing gold hoarders or order of souls missions, and once on a FOTD.
I’ve only found 3 ancient skeletons in my time on the seas back when forts megs and krakens were the only big things, 2 of them I found on the shores of gold while getting my gold curse and the third was in the cove in the very bottom left portion of the map
Wait when you say fortresses are you referring to the ghost forts around the map? Can ancient skeletons actually spawn there?
The sea forts with ghosts on them. Yea they can spawn there
Just found one on Mermaid's Hideaway while fishing in the pond. Was there about an hour before it spawned.
i might note just to clear up something that may confuse some, it doesnt need to specifically be in place of an enemy spawning, i have had a few at inactive skele forts, one at a finished ghost fort, and one at an active ghost fort mid wave
i only add this because the way it was expressed in the video could make it almost sound like they only spawn in place of skeletons or enemies even though its not directly stated, figured i would clear some possible confusion
The only ancient skeleton I have found was on a random island while I was doing gold hoarder quests by myself.
This seems like a correlation vs causation issue, the places we spend the most time at (like forts) spawn the most
I Wonder If They Spawn On Athena Voyages (Normal, Ashen, And Thieves Haven) Given Those Have Both Order Of Souls Skeleton Spawns And Gold Hoarder Digs
ive found 2 in my 500 hours (ish) of playing. both were just lucky finds on islands, both were T1 too. ima definatley try this method though.
ive had at least 4 ancient skeletons spawn.
I got 2 in 2 days while farming treacherous loot on shores of gold. Both were only just above 100 coins but they did spawn.
