    Your videos are awesome! I’m glad I came across your channel! I had a video suggestion I was hoping you can cover 😬
    Could you potentially make a video about how to study in medical school? Specifically regarding practical techniques you use to learn, absorb and remember the extensive material, what you do during, after lectures, for readings, how to balance studying with required lectures & readings, and how you structure your studying schedule days before the exam? (A lot of points lol, just needed some tips in how you apply them!)

    Ah!! Can't wait to hear more! It's cool you say that don't hesitate to apply to more competitive specialties! Give us hope! Hope you are also applying to U of T! I know many students from McMaster choose U of T as their first choice due to relatively more number of hospitals in Toronto Downtown compared to Hamilton. :) Not sure about your batch but most students from my batch at McMaster wanted to apply to U of T and the ones at U of T wanted to apply to McMaster... Hahaha...Wish you good luck in your application!! I am sure it will be great once in a life time experience!!

      I've spoken with many doctors and students who actually recommend that students from Mac do residency at U of T and that U of T med students do residency at Mac. I'm not sure exactly why this is but I'd wager that it's something to do with the different philosophies of the schools and how it'll make you more well rounded as a doc 🔥Thanks so much for the well wishes though :D and definitely! As a med student, it's easy to compare yourself to other students (especially when residency applications come 😅) But I have no doubts at all that if I were passionate about any of the more competitive specialties, then I could find a way in. And its the same for my classmates as well 🤙

      @@nxtgenmd Agreed! Passion is the main driving force! Otherwise, we can't survive in such long and continuing nature of training in Medicine! Hope you all get residency at U of T! Being a past Mac student and coming to U of T has been one of the most valuable and exciting experience! Walking on the university avenue and running between hospitals is great! All the hospitals are super close so just cross university avenue and run for different tasks! I agree! doing residency in different institute does make you a well rounded doc. :)

    Great video. Thank you for the insight.
    I personally think looking R value is not the best way to analyze the competitiveness of specialties.
    Most people who I know of do not even think about applying to derm because it is notoriously known for its competitiveness. This also applies to plastic surgery, ENT, and neurosurgery.
    On the other hand, specialities like ophthalmology and EM are in high demand because many students think that they are still "reachable."
    I believe this is why Step scores and the number of research publications are analyzed more commonly than R values when analyzing the competitiveness of specialities.

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks David and thanks for the insight 🤙 I don't disagree with your points, but things work a little bit different here in Canada from what I understand. The scores from our board exams aren't even received by residency directors until we've already matched, and research (while incredibly important to some programs), can be substituted with other experiences that fill the CANMEDS roles. It's true that a student gunning for family medicine will have a hard time matching plastic surgery if they wake up at the start of their final year and totally change their mind on career paths, but on the other hand, as long as people are flexible with geography / institutional preferences, I know students who dual planned and still ended up with a more "intuitively competitive" residency position. I'll learn more about the process as I go through it :)

    Hey just curious was looking for thoughts, I decided to go with humanities as my premed (classics specifically), people told me to take what I'm interested in undergrad, (not that I don't love science). i love Greek mythology, specifically the origins of medicine, but I can't help but sometimes feel that I'm shooting myself in the foot. I watched your video on the best premed programs, would switching to sciences better and help prepare me for the MCAT?
    Edit: just saw your last post on insta, really motivational, and pretty applicable to my situation, I feel alot better about this whole thing now, keep up the great work rooting for you.

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Abhay, thanks for the support and I'm glad that the post was motivational :D Truthfully, not having a background in sciences is a detriment to the MCAT in the same way that not having a background in business is a detriment to students who want to write the GMAT. It's still possible to do well, but will require much more work in all likelihood to achieve a top score.
      People get accepted to medicine from all sorts of programs here in Canada - statistically its more common to do so from a premed program but that decision is best made by you. My question to premeds who choose not to do science is always, "why don't you want to do science?" Followed up by, "why doesn't whatever bothers you about science bother you about medicine?" Since allopathic medicine is a lot of applied science plus working with people 🤙 Just some things to think about and potentially interview questions that may show up at your med school interviews one day :) Best of luck with everything!

      I think the most important thing in your position now would be to lay out your entire application and see where the holes are. It's hard to say that "research" will be the deciding factor, or "volunteering" or "insert other category here." I've talked about my concept of a "5 year plan" before - for when I didn't apply to med after my 4th year of undergrad because my application wasn't very strong.

    If more family medicine doctors are in residency and go into practice, how come it is impossible to find a Canadian educated and trained GP?

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  3 роки тому +1

      We can assume that more IMGs match into family medicine than other specialties given the relative abundance of spots (which are there because we need more family doctors). Also though, the ~1500 new family doctors per year need to supply the entire country. This means that depending on where you live, there is still a relative shortage of family doctors especially since the majority of new grads who grew up in bigger cities usually practice in bigger cities and not smaller communities where they could be needed most. It's a problem that I don't think we have a complete answer to yet unfortunately.
