the original character designer for the Digimon franchise cited Spawn and other 90's comics as inspiration for the first batch of creatures as they were trying to differentiate themselves from other popular monster collecting franchises
Excellent video, bud! The reason Todd McFarlane was writing as "Will Carlton" was created as a test to see the fan reception and sales for Spawn's "new" writer without McFarlane's name attached to the comic. There were mixed reactions among fans, readers were saying they liked Carlton's writing and others preferred McFarlane. But Todd McFarlane heard from comic retailers that sales were down, so he "returned" in Spawn #216.
I didn't know a few of these - thank you! I found it particularly interesting seeing the initial Spawn drawings from McFarlane's teenage years. They feel like they were heavily inspired by the stuff Jim Starlin was doing at the time.
You'd be amazed at the number of times Todd took ideas from the letter pages of Spawn. Blood Fued definitely originated from a fan letter, even though Moore wrote the story.
I did know much about this stuff, but I was a Spawn reader on and off since the start through most of the 90's. The Tony Twist thing was known to me, but also, there's the reason behind why Chapel was no longer Al Simmons' killer later on in continuity or the movie. You might've hit on it in another video, but McFarlane danced around a lot of land mines in making this landmark character and his lore.
A guy named “Tony Twist” got 5 million dollars because McFarlane named a character “Antonio Twistelli” I’ve never much cared for Macfarlane’s work and I still think that’s bullshit.
The record for longest "Creator Owned" comic is fine, but Dave Sim wrote and penciled art (all of it, except for the ridiculously detailed Gerhard backgrounds) to all 300 of those issues of Cerebus.
True, Macfarlane penciled I think, around 17 issues, not very impressive at all. After that, he co-pencilled a half dozen or so with Capullo and a few others. Then he inked Capullo for maybe a dozen issues. Since then, he's probably only penciled a handful, I think he did 200 or 300?
You know with todd mcfarlane also having to been one of the people who created Venom I wonder how much of Spawn’s traits was originally going to go to Venom? Because with both of them having two parasitic suits that are sentient there have had to have been some unused ideas for Venom that eventually went to Spawn right? I mean lots of creators reuse unused stuff for future projects so who’s to say this isn’t the case for Spawn
@@Aaron-zt5ee The concept of the symbiote was created by him, sure, but Venom wasn’t. After Todd McFarlane decided he didn’t like the look of black on Spiderman him and David started brainstorming, but the short version is that they would rip the symbiote off of Spiderman and put it on someone else. When Todd was designing the character all he had to work with was the colour black, but he made the character his own. Almost every design choice was his; He made Venom big, he gave him the teeth and eyes, etc.
@@HugeGoober the redesign wasn’t that severe. All he had to do was slap a mouth on the costume more or less. As for taking the suit off, that was done because of fan pressure at the time. I think it was a PAD story where he finally took it off.
@@Aaron-zt5ee It was done by fan pressure but it was also a decision that Todd agreed with heavily, so it doesn’t really matter. Sure Todd didn’t do anything crazy with the design but thats not the point, the point is nobody was stopping him from making the character exactly how he wanted seeing as all he had to work with was the colour black. There are podcasts where he talks about it and Im pretty sure he mentions it during his Live Drawing videos on the McFarlane Toys channel.
@@HugeGooberI'm sure he mentions it a lot. Todd has always claimed to be the creator of Venom with plenty people at Marvel showing that the foundations for the character predates Todd's first Marvel work. Todd had a hand in it, but not any more or less than, say, Mike Zeck.
Love your videos man! So happy I stumbled on your channel🎉 Btw could you please tell the name of that groovy track from the very beginning of the video?
An addendum to the first point about the character being birthed virtually fully formed when Todd was a teenager in the late 70's: No one to my knowledge has ever made an official statement one way or the other, and I'm not calling Todd a liar because it well could be a case of convergent [design] evolution, but I can't help but notice some significant similarities between Spawn and John Byrne's Alpha Flight character 'Nemesis', who debuted just a few years prior to the founding of Image. I strongly encourage anyone to have a google and share your thoughts.
@@landofthesilverpath5823 yeah, there's enough similarity that if I was John Byrne, it would've raised an eyebrow at the very least. BUT, he never caused a fuss, so....
@@PopIcons-q6s Very possible. I'd always heard that the two didn't get along, but I can't find anything about a feud, so I might be just assuming based on how abrasive and outspoken both men are known to be. I figure if there was any [intentional] plagiarism in either direction, you can bet we would have heard about it.
Thank you, Josh! Do Wanda or Terry bear any physical resemblance their real-world counterparts, or was Todd just in the habit of using people's names? I've occasionally been curious about that.
Actually Alex proyas who directed The CROW 1994 with Brandon Lee in it (Rest in peace legend) was the first candidet to direct Spawn movie but he left to direct Dark city which is good but failed at the box office
3:50 through 4:54 - Yeah that was fucking weird when I read that issue......so would this be on equal footing of yikes as Frank Castle being turned black? 8:12 - Shit I would kill for a DOOM 2016 clone with Spawn at the helm.....maybe one that pitted him against both Marvel Zombies and DCeased in one big high octane super zombie apocalypse where he then goes kill off Mistress Death and Necron and becomes the new grip reaper. And it plays like a hybrid of DOOM and DMC where he has to use melee attacks to fill up his "mana" for use with his "Hell Guns" but he also gets the option to use mortal made "Zombie Killer" guns made by Rocket Raccoon, and there's a co op multiplayer mode where the other players can play as either Ghost Rider or Etrigan.....
Most remakes are pretty pointless, but Spawn is one of those movies that should be remade. I remember Malebolgia looking dreadful. With the technology that's available today the character can really be done justice.
I was a huge Spawn fan but I have to admit I’m surprised that it is still being published. All the spin-offs aside the main series should have ended after 225 issues, then maybe two years of a Gunslinger Spawn and King Spawn would lead to 80 issues of Hellspawn vol.2 but some time off (and later return) would help to revitalise interest in the character.
all I want is to DC, Marvel and Image to join forces and make a Spawn, Ghost Rider and Lobo crossover to make the most metal comic book that ever existed

Can u do a vid of the guardians of the galaxy from the future that have captain America in it?

Funnily enough while reading the 300 storyline, I noticed Todd not only forgot K7-Leetha's name, but that she's a parasite, not a symbiote.
Spawn needs another movie or a tvshow.

Isn't this the same reason JK Rowling ditched her pen name, when it turned out nobody liked her new book?
That is both hilarious and kinda depressing.
"Kids Like Chains" is now the name of a kickass Substack from Danny Cates, Ryan Ottley, and four or five other artists.
Spawn is a really interesting character in my opinion
Spawn is an amazing character, but visually didn't come into his own until Greg Capullo started penciling him.
Josh talking about Spawn, let’s go!
FIRE 🔥💯
You make some of the best comic videos. You just fall out of my algorithm between releases. I just hit the bell
You cannot make me learn things about Spawn. I refuse.
Maybe you guys can chat about Tomb of Dracula instead?
Surprised you weren't cited as Spawn's #1 fan, tbh
Good. I've always loved Spawn, such a cool character.
I always look forward to a Spawn video!
The Gin and Beetlejuice line was funnier than it should have been.

"What every edgy 13 year old wants to see in a comic book"
Never before have been so offended by something I 100% agree with
No Meteor Man is the 1rst actually first BLK super hero movie
This is a good attempt at an “um, actually” but if we rewind the tape, I very clearly say “comic book movie”. Oh well, better luck next time!

Awesome vid
I was just reading Gunslinger and saw that was on my recommendation tab 😂😂
May I ask where you got the shirt from? Looks cool
I knew all of it lol but still love hearing it and the video 💀🤘🏾🤘🏾
As a spawn fan, I actually like the idea of a white guy being a lost soul used as a disguise.
But I’m a white dude so I can say “literally me”
Fun video that made me fetch the Batman/Spawn Crossover from my shelf ;)
Please, make a video on new ongoing spawn spin-offs, I think, many people don't pay due attention they deserve.

More Spawn, or Cerebus, or TMNT please
Great video. Unrelated but can we get a collection tour??
Thanks! Funnily enough, I just filmed a collection tour last week. It will be up at some point this month.
Yay! Can't wait!
DID YOU KNOW Spawn even has his own dedicated month? #Spawntember baybeeee
Don't forget he crossed over with the Ant and Angela including Jade in the series and the other DC and Marvel characters.
The character of Spawn is extremely awesome!
My friend's dad was named Al Simmons.
Can you do a video on the midnight sons/suns and there history?
Also a solo ghost rider video

Forgot i had a spawn batman crossover.
Hi josh ... Thanks for good videos.
which was first: - Nightwatch (marvel) or Spawn ? (With there living caps)
Thanks
Spawn came first. Nightwatch is a Spawn rip-off, for sure. Glad you like the videos! 🙏
Thank you !!!
Im starting to like spawn because of this
Do you have anything on Image comics THE HAUNT?
Get that sponsorship money, hell yeah

How have we’ve not gotten a Spawn reboot movie or video game yet?🖤❤️💚👻
I want a free world spawn video game!!
Comics are a great escape!😊
Well at least there's the best comic crossover between Spawn which is him with Batman.
I knew all of these.
Cool!!
Love your videos, wanna see your toy shelves
Not the devil but A devil.
He bought that character from the real al Simmons
