Appreciate your sharing and agree with your outlook. I retired at 62 and love it. Excercise and eat better. It's great listening to like minded people like you that help others to live a great older life. Keep going and good luck with your surgery if it's not happened yet ❤

Hi Nick - greatly appreciating your regular updates from the fine city of York. Poor health can strike out of the blue and isn't always related to taking it for granted. I'm 61 and have always looked after myself right from my teens - walking, running, gym, clean eating, perfect BMI, low vices, etc. You'd never see me in McDonalds! But 18 months ago I developed Graves Disease (overactive thyroid) after a bout of Covid which you can't avoid! Like your gall bladder issue, mine is more annoying than debilitating but it leaves me thinking you need to spend your life ENJOYING yourself. If you love the gym and eating salad like me, then great! But please don't invest heavily in those things if you hate them. Life is short, so make sure to enjoy the moment 🙏👍 Wishing you all the best.

I had my gallbladder 3 years ago. Absolutely fine afterwards, in and out of hospital on the same day and no travel restrictions were imposed.
Im coming upto retirement in March at 55 years old and your videos are a great guide. Thanks.

I'm a personal trainer and nutritionist too. Nutirition is key for a healthy life and of course, exercise. Luckily, I am still in good health at 64 due to my lifestyle. My wife is 72 and also in good health. Neither of us take any medication. I appreciate that we are outliers as most people our age, including family and that includes younger members, are on medication. Red wine and whisky are my go to drinks as well! Just subscribed.

agree with you on exercise. nearly 62, still working and have to for some time to take care of my children. Just got my first kettlebell and have always hit the heavy bag. thinking maybe i need to increase the weight i lift i keep hearing heavy weights are important. i do 4, 3 minute rounds on the bag then do a 15 minute kettlebell workout. by the end i am shattered. do you lift heavy weights? to be honest I don't really enjoy lifting weights, the kettlebell workouts are fun.

    Well said 👍
I changed to a plant-based diet 4 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did.
My sleep quality, cardio vascular fitness and general well being have all improved significantly since then. I follow a daily eating window of 13:00 to 19:00 which is easy to adapt to. Once a month I water fast for 36 hours. I go to the gym 4 times a week to do a HIIT class and do downhill mountain biking most weekends. I have just applied to become an on-call fire fighter.
I will be 64 in February and it feels like life is just beginning
    Thankyou for your content🙏

I retired at age 53, so I am in my early 60s. Many of them resisted me because they couldn't understand the idea of not working if it wasn't necessary. I considered the phases of my life. I worked very hard to achieve what I have now, but in my last years, I owe it to myself to "stop and smell the roses." In my instance, I departed the nation after retiring and currently reside in Latin America. It made it possible for me to appreciate my new surroundings while escaping all the bad things that were going on in America. Nobody that I know of regrets retiring has yet to come to me.

I retired early as well, and have lived away from my hometown and country, leading the life I want, pretty low key and filled with hobbies and interests. To be honest, being away from the judgements and prying eyes of hometown society made it easier.

Nick if possible consider an alternate to removing gall bladder. I had a really bad attack over Christmas a decade ago. One MD said remove it another cautioned that. I realized over the holiday season I had a much higher fat intake-- lots of rich foods ie gravy, pies at Thanksgiving. Followed by fudge & eggnog treats through Christmasand New Year. Once a GB removed there will be more problems digesting fat.
Still with GB & enjoying favorite treats at a level I know my GB can handle. The medical model is NOT necessarily the only answer to improving health status. Happy New Year. Just found your channel & love your insights & experiences.

I was getting attacks as if a heart attack after eating my meals. Got my organs checked and found out I had over 50 gallstones. I underwent cholecystectomy and it took me a year for my body to get used to new eating habits. I reduced fried food and dairy, which helped manage my gut. All good now and eating healthier is the way to go as we age.

Hi Nick, It's always a pleasure to hear your thoughts and helpful advice on retirement, I look forward to your videos while Uncle Archie is grabbing his weekly goodies. I totally agree with the importance of food intake in later years, especially as we struggle to process nutrients the way we once did. You mentioned in an earlier vlog sarcopenia, and this is definitely something that can be helped by eating much much more protein than we used to, especially as we are breaking down muscle in our gym sessions. Equally important, though, is cardiovascular training and, in particular, Zone 2 training because we need to build our Mitochondrial function, I believe this should be right at the top of our exercise in our retirement programme and is potentially a life saver! Keep up the great work. I really appreciate your honest and direct insight. Many thanks.

Great video. I’ll be 60 next March… I’m glad it’s not 70 by the experience of your surgeon friend, however it’s sobering stuff to hear and good of you to share it. I’ve a friend Peter who’s 78 and had his gallbladder removed last year… it came out of the blue as he hadn’t been suffering like you but suddenly one day the pain arrived. He had keyhole surgery, the outcome hasn’t changed his life with regard to diet… he has carried on as before… maybe you’ll be lucky in that regard as well. Keep up the good work and regards to Uncle Archie.

The actual *kidney stone* I had was certainly not "low-level pain", near-excruciating, like having been hit very hard & very bruised in the lower abdomen. And thankfully I *xy*ed the tiny little thing out, panic over & avoided surgical/operative intervention.

@@nickjmaher Yes, I appreciate kidney stones & gallstones are very different etc, However painful etc they are - an ex had the misfortune to be hospitalised twice with something related to yours - I was mentioning the type & extent of the pain I encountered. Which would have been different to yours if not in pain level perhaps. You sound like you've had kidney stones before so perhaps know that anyway

I used to work on the trading floor of a Wall st bank, and every now and then, one of the older traders would get tapped on the shoulder and told it was time to go ( retire ) . Often, they did not want to go, I guess because of fear of losing their identity and reason for existence, and so, on their last day, they'd be tearful, heavy with emotion. I could never understand it - they should have been doing cart wheels going out of there.

I was recommended a great book from a friend, "The Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush". I have done this flush twice and it works wonders. It only takes a week and costs very little. You should try this flush and see if you can avoid the surgery. If they take out your gallbladder, you will have to live with the restrictive diet forever.

I retired at 52 and wish I’d done it sooner. The 9-to-5 grind steals your freedom for a paycheck.[peanuts] btw my advice is If you’re in your late 30s or early 40s, start saving for retirement now, in your 50s? Invest now and break free from relying on your job, its too stressful and its affecting our health! Market trends like the Trump Effect have made millions for many including me. Stay focused and consistent!

Hello Nick you seem to be nice guy. But the fantasy idea of finishing work at 44 .is a dream that most cant even imagine. I hope that the surgery fixes the problem. But for the most of us it is not possible. To consider. I have no debts a house worth one and a half million pounds. A partime job that so important to me. I think the socal aspects work are, if you are lucky. Are as important as the financial.

Allow me to add a third element - annual checkup. I recommend blood tests, internal organs ultra-sound, and ECG. Early diagnosis can significantly increase treatment success and recovery. Most first-world public health services offer those tests for free. I do the blood tests twice a year when possible. It must include lipids, glucose, liver function markers, blood chemistry, proteins, and vitamin D. It is no brainer, just do it.
