      LA Metro needs all the good publicity, if they have a bad image they know the voters will never approve all their proposed transit projects lol. Just look at the construction of the Red Line and the chaos around that.

    On of the best videos of the Metro Gold line that really shows off the system. Thanks for posting this. I lived in LA for years and we fought hard, back in the early days, to retain this right-of-way after abandonment of the rail. Nice to see that those efforts have paid off.

    Im from NYC and use to the crowded subway. I loved looking out the front car window and pretending I was the train operator as a kid. I still do sometimes. But you really cant do that anymore. The new high tech train operator cabs have extended across the whole front of the subway car. I would love to ride every subway, street car and light rail line around the world as possible. Ive done so in Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Washington DC, London and Vienna. Id love to ride the ones in Los Angeles and New Orleans. This was fun to watch!

    Very nice video...the train seems slow but after seeing the traffic on Interstate 210 maybe it's not so bad and a really good alternative to using a car. Would be nice if they could speed that train up a bit, maybe up to 80mph on the straight portions.

      The Blue, Gold, and Expo lines have level crossings in places, so have to go slower. The Green Line is completely grade separate so it can go faster. The Red and Purple lines are also grade separated with rail cars rated to go faster than the light rail vehicles used on the above lines.

      I guess maybe because here in LA, riding thr train is less of a necessity, since were very much a car culture and usually youd have to choose to ride the train to where you wanted to go instead of driving there.

  • @dju4ia

    I was lucky as a kid and often got to ride the local freight trains on this line back in the 70's when it was the heavily traveled 2nd division of Santa Fe. The route is certainly the same but wow has it changed. I used to love being in the cupola on the freeway waving at all the cars as they drove along side. I think we used to go faster in the freight trains then these trolleys currently do down the 210 freeway.

    • @dynasty0019
      @dynasty0019 8 років тому +1

      Top speed on the Gold Line is 55 mph, so I wouldn't be surprised if the old trains ran faster than light rail since the majority of the line is pretty straight.

      I used to love watching trains at First Ave in Arcadia where the Arcadia station sits now. The eastbound freight trains used to come off the freeway and through arcadia at 70 MPH and just scream through town. Those were the days.

      Azusa through the commuter transit hub in Downtown LA then heads to either Long Beach or Santa Monica, depending on what the MTA board finally decides. It will be ready by 2028 Olympics. Lets not forget the crenshaw line and Red Line to Westwood should be open in a few years.

      I enjoyed the video!
      But from 36:45 to 38:40 there is a street that runs parallel to the tracks with several crossing streets without gates. The traffic lights were all red for the street that runs parallel but the train did not stop (although it went cautiously slow).
      Some of the cars crossing the tracks in that portion of the video clip were flying as if they they knew they were supposed to stop but didn't.
      Sounds like an accident waiting to happens.

    • @theminipetabyte4610
      @theminipetabyte4610 8 років тому +3

      Mich050: Highland Park reminds me of the old North Shore Line in Highland Park ILL it's original Shore Line Route. There the only crossing protection was traffic signals and stop signs in downtown Highland Park ILL. That route was abandoned on July 25 1955. The remainder of the North Shore Line was abandoned on January 21 1963 it's remaining Skokie Valley Route and the Lake Bluff -Mundelein division and Milwaukee Wisconsin, Racine Wisconsin,and Kenosha Wisconsin.

    Can someone explain to me why there are no crossing gates after the Highland Park Station for a few blocks, i noticed the motorman on the train was going thru the intersection despite the fact that the traffic running parallel with him were stopped at the red light....Is this not a dangerous aspect along that particular stretch of track?.....should there be crossing gates to alert traffic coming accross at those particular intersections that the light rail is coming thru so as to avoid any potential accidents along that stretch ?

    • @FanRailer
      @FanRailer  6 років тому +2

      That section is treated as a streetcar-like section. There are traffic signals for both the light rail and automotive traffic. Yes, there's a risk for accident, but it's no different than any other streetcar system elsewhere in the world.

    • @waltarrrrr
      @waltarrrrr 6 років тому

      This is my neighborhood. No crossing gates, just signals. Which is an improvement from when it was the railroad for Santa Fe and Amtrak prior to 2001 and there were just signs. In the first few years of Gold Line operation, there were many crashes, but crashes seem to have decreased in regularity as drivers become more aware of the trains. My dream is that Metro tunnels it through Highland Park someday.

      There is a plan to build a gondola lift (like a ski lift) between Union Station and Dodger Stadium. Privately owned, apparently. We'll see if it ever happens, but there's nothing technical or legal to rule it out, and LA Metro has given it's preliminary ok, so I'm guessing it will be built eventually.

    I've seen a couple of video's from the Metro Rail trains in LA and there is something that puzzles me and I hope someone can explain to me: what are the small, yellow cylinder-shaped gates on the platforms meant for? They seem to be evenly spaced out, but I don't get what they should prevent people from doing. As a Dutch person it''s weird to see such a stretched out trackbed, because in The Netherlands, we are usually only accustomed to having tracks in tight streets that have been there for hundreds of years.

    • @albertcarello619
      @albertcarello619 2 роки тому +1

      Spaceshotx7: The loud horn is for wide open country running and the quacker horn is for street running and inner city running although I hear both in street running traffic. Also you have the alarm -gongs also sounding in city street traffic and to announce train departures.
