What's Going on with my Demon 170? Is my Engine Trashed?

- I went to my local dealership to get some answers as to what happened to my Demon 170 at the track. This is an update to my previous video in which my car went into limp mode at the track, and the transbrake stopped working. It has been two weeks since I took the car to the dealer and Stellantis has still yet to weigh in, despite the issue being escalated to senior engineers. This problem has the potential to keep the car down for months.

I was messing with my 2016 ram 1500 PCM I accidentally left one of the connection not attached enough. And for some reason it was revving my motor at 1500rpm. It usually sits below 900. I went back and sat it correctly and it was fine after. It was throwing low battery voltage. And ABS light with traction control.
You picked the perfect colors for a vehicle named the Demon !!!
Too bad Stelantis fired all the Dodge Engineers… 🙄
They sure did. 94% of the FCA employees in North America are now gone.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 FACTS!!!!!!!
Yup!!!!
Exactly what I was going to say. It’s all EV trash now…probably ditched the 2/3 of the ICE team 2 weeks ago and gave the carryover work to LCC employees who don’t even own a car🫤. My best guess.
@@dscop442EV wouldn’t have this issue…😏
I am so glad I'm still stuck in "Old School Mode".. All that $$$ and issues with new and owned by the dealer for analysis and fix.. No more "tinkering" yourself.. God bless you techies.. And those with all the money.... I'll be happy with my carburetor equipped Dinosaurs.!!
Right on. The Demon is a beast but I'm afraid all this high tech is it's achillies heal. I'll stick with my old 70 Challenger R/T. I can't touch those ET's, but I'm ok with that.

@@majormannfred good for you! A friend of mine raced an AMX for many years. It was a rocket.
Unfortunately when you beat the heck out of a car at a drag strip it’s bound to break !
Especially if it's a modern Dodge
I mean it is literally a factory drag car. You telling me you cant drag race a factory produced drag car? If thats the case yall are supporting the wrong brand come on over to ford where people spend less and go faster more reliably.
@@midnight347 give it up 😂
Thanks for the update, I have been curious as to what was happening. I hope they get you fixed up, but it is amazing to see a drag car with a warranty!
Yes it is. But that Warranty won’t do you much good if you can’t get the factory to back it up by getting in touch with the dealership. Or worse, having a car that doesn’t run right sitting in the dealership while having outrageous payments.
Factory warranty or not, drag racing tears stuff up. Looking forward to updates.

Maybe swap oil pressure sensor, just in case. Even newer sensors have been know to go freaky once in a while. 🤔
I think it’s the camshaft .
What's sad is if it wasn't for RacerX being RacerX they would have already told him to go pound sand like they have with other Joe Smo's.
Damn.....I know that sucks especially when youre making big MONEY payments on that Demon......... Following......
Racer x...a lot of dodge last call vehicles quality control is pretty bad... I think you got a lemon. With others, this happens when people know their employment is coming to a close. And this is unfortunate. I hope your demon 170 issues are resolved.
Another Dodge Lemon
They made an insane amount of lemons. They are barely making it anymore
@@OleSevers they definitely rushed it...
Appreciate the update! Will still always follow the channel! I love that Demon 170!
Really hope Dodge takes care of you and your car. You are such a super spokesperson for Dodge.😎
They would if they cared, but this is a whole new ballgame with Stellantis.
Dodge is not really Dodge anymore. They're worse.
I'll never buy dodge. You will be taken care of because you bought a high end car and you do UA-cam. But dodge is bad about warranties and backing their products in my experience. I actually had my home burn down because of a recall on a 2004 Durango and got no compensation or anything. What a worthless car manufacturer. I will always hate them💯 also had a work van with extended warranty that was purchased when new. The motor blew and they would not stand behind it. Bought a new Chevrolet work van and I'll never go back. Goodluck to you and the car. Dodge is trash💯
@@PSYCHOBABAYAGAHopefully your Chevy van doesn't have any issues.
I mean he is beating the crap out of the car. Suspects something is wrong with it and does 4 more hard launches at the strip. I mean how many times has he ran it already 50 times, 100 times. That’s quite a bit of abuse especially given how violent the car throws that power to the wheels the first 60 feet something is bound to break doesn’t matter how tough it is from the factory
Lot of folks been having issues with 2023’s, door panels coming apart, electrical issues etc…
That's because Dodge doesn't care.
1. This generation of the chargers/ challengers are at the end of their run
2. Dodge will just say "you raced it, so we won't cover it"
Sure hope it's something stupid, like computer related. Missing the Demon content. Praying for you and the 170, brother
Typical Dodge junk
@@allanhood4397 Yeah from a typical🤔 Dodge Hater..
Getto cars
I'm agreeing with the idea that it's ether a bad sensor or a programming issue. I just hope it's not a defect in the oil pump cavitation of the oil. That's going to cause damage. The computer should have a recording of the oil pressure when it set the codes. And the RPM at the time. Hoping for the best for you and your car.
@@dragvan1937 I know this is 12 days old but it sounds like the violent launches pushes all the oil away from where it's needed causing the engine to start eating itself. Was a known issue with the bosses at Stelantis but they had already built a bunch of engines so they quietly put in a better pump on all future built engines (or one that keeps the oil where it needs to be properly) and just crossed their fingers.
Bummer. It is good that the dealership is taking this seriously. However, it isn't a good sign that they can't fix it. Hope it gets resolved for you.
They'll sit on it for a few months until X agrees to take it back as is. He definitely will not receive a rebuilt engine, WTF did he think he was buying a Toyota? If X whines loud enuf on YT they just might clear the fault codes and retard the timing. Anyone else that is not a wealthy UA-camr won't even get a car wash. Rich people pay $$$$ to learn things, the rest of us have to do it the hard way.
Imagine just how little a used clapped out Demon will fetch next year? OH, what a feeling...
Look at the upside... maybe it shut the whole system down before something major happened!!!
Can't hurt to have positive thoughts!
Weird how racers used to tinker with their setups and tweak their car to figure it out. Todays racer just goes to the dealership to reads computer codes to diagnose. Times have changed.
That’s super crazy! I’m guessing it has to do with oil pressure. I’ve seen a few other issues with blown motors. Hopefully you don’t have any more issues. We really enjoy seeing your Demon for sure. Keep the ups coming, brother we love them.
I ran the wholesale parts at that dealership. It will be a miracle if you hear back on that Star case. We had cars sitting around for months because I could not locate parts or Stelantis couldn't supply them. The parts and service get screwed because Stelantis can't deliver. I had to submit two and three requests for hellcat parts before they would release them. I could have sold five times the parts if Stelantis could have just supplied them.
Sorry to see you go through this... Hopeful there will be a idea or fix by the next update. Hey you can do a some content on that rental... LOL we are with you no matter..
Thanks for the update! I was wondering what was going on.
Hope you get this resolved cuz it’s gotta be nerve wracking especially with these cars going away. Good luck!
Stellantis tech here, that ‘head’ tech is gonna lose his ass working on that Demon. He will not be compensated for even half the time he spends wasting on this work order. He will quit and it’ll be the next guy up. The engineers, if there are any left are gonna waste his time, spin him around in circles and this will take forever to resolve. That Wagoneer rental is likely about to throw a check engine light any moment as well.
im starting to think i made the right choice getting a '22 hellcat over a '23 seeing all the problems with these things
@@ItsBlurrsI noticed alot of covid cars 2020 to 2023 have a lot of problems. I have 2016 scat and hellcat not one single problem yet the newer guys have a lot of problems.
2021 scat with blown motor at 24k no help from stellantis feel you pain brotha!!!
@@ItsBlurrs You’d be blown away if you saw as many faults and issues with all these engines. They can’t even clean the casting sand out of the block properly, guess where that stuff ends up?
Too bad the dealerships lost so much money on selling the Demons to be able to pay the techs to work on them. That $100k+ markup had to go to the owner, not the employees.
O ring on the oil pickup tube could be split or pushed out not sealing
Well if it is trash can I get the trashed engine or have first dibs on it if u don’t need it for the core charge
Sorry to hear about the problems there it is a bad situation
Sorry to hear about the car. Hope it gets fixed soon.
Wishing you the best of luck. Hope it turns out to be a minor problem.
Timing chain guide is broken and/or VVT. Cam phaser mounted on cam is bad. That will cause Timing issues and it will go into limp mode. Oil pressure sender is bad but will not cause issues your having. Same symptoms I had on my 2012 SRT8 6.4
That's sux! I'm sorry to hear the not so good news on your Demon170. Hope it all works out for you.
Worse comes to worse, if it doesn't work out for you RacerX and if ever down the road, you want to sell it for whatever reason, I'll buy it from you. I've been still looking for one.

X-Man, hopefully everything gets cleared up quickly. After 2wks, you would think they had some news. But I'm not surprised they don't, it's not good when the techs get bamboozled.
Man Racer X when I first hear I said to myself you are like me you get the special problems and your going to be taken for the uncomfortable ride and will the problem ever be solved. I was amazed at how well you started off taking on the problem pretty easy going.

@@douglastaylor8039 Hope so. I hope it does not take a another new Demon 170. Part of the deal or experience.
Good luck finding the engineer that built it
I wish you good luck with the car , I’m sure it will be ok soon
Oil could be sloshing back and the pick up becomes uncovered reducing oil pressure. There should be baffeling in the oil pan to reduce this , but who knows?
The dodge engineers should know that and they do about the sump oil pumps. They don't want those engines to last to long.
A Dodge on a service rack. That's its natural habitat.
Bet they will add a better oil pan with increased baffles. Your car launches hard!
Hopefully the can find the problem and fix it. Intermittent problems are so hard to find.
Sorry to hear that the Demon is down. Hopefully it's something simple like a bad oil or cam sensor or just tuning. When the intake manifold gasket took a dump on my Trackhawk, I got all kinds of error codes like cylinder misfire, bad throttle body and all kinds of codes related to vacuum leaks along with going into limp mode on the street. Seems like when one thing is wrong, it makes the other stuff go nuts too. The dealership had my ride for about 2 weeks, but the cool thing is that it was all covered under the 5 year powertrain warranty with 2 months to spare. I hope you get it back soon sir. Blessings!
That sucks, hopefully they get it solved so you can enjoy your CAR!!!
I really hope you engineering gives them some direction asap. Can’t wait to see that thing back on the strip!
Good luck is all I can say brother! I worked at a 5 star Chrysler dealership for a better part of a decade. When the caliber and avenger came out with that silly cvt transaxle, we had opened a star ticket on it and actually had a team come from Mercedes to come and try to figure out issues with that system. I remember several of our customers being without their vehicles for a couple months.
Hopefully the engineers behide the demon wasn't part of that mass layoff the engineering department had. I really hope it all works out for you.
That was my first thought as well.
The SRT engineers are ghosts

Really sorry to hear you're having trouble. I always loved dodge but had problems with every one I've had. So, I got a vette. Only to have it stolen. It was recovered. Been at the dealer for 2 months getting repaired. My son got a Type R....I love that thing. But recall on fuel pump. In the words of the donut guys...cars are pain. Hope you get some resolve soon brother!
Hey man you can come get my HC challenger and make them races happen you have lined up if yours is down too long! It is tuned for E85 and I have full drag pack with same tire you have on your 170. I've not gotten to make a good pass on mine since tuned because it keeps on raining every time the track is open. Hope you get yours fixed soon!
Sorry to hear X ,I know how long you waited for your 170 , Maybe you'll end up in a C8 after all, The Zo6 with that splendid sound from the flat plane or for the xtra grip at launch, The E-ray.
Either way , Best of luck 🏁
There's a shop in Ocala I keep hearing about that knows the ins and outs of these late model Mopars called Burnyzz speed shop. If the dealer can't figure it out maybe these guys can
That’s how my cars end up in the barn. I always feel this deep feeling right before but!!!
its going to be escalated to engineers who are no longer employed. lol
Gotta love that mopar engineering
It's the track. New, old, bullet proof build, just the nature of drag racing, eventually something is going to break. I hope it's simple and covered, good luck.
This is horrible news. Im very sorry to hear. Its unfortunate this happened, but with your popularity and channel, we'll get to see first hand whats happening with Dodge as a company. You will be informing many potential future consumers.
What's wrong with the Demon? Let's start with, it's a Dodge, and Stellantis owns Dodge. Stellantis wants Dodge to go away. Time to get rid ofvit.
RACERX,
I owe you an opology. I thought you modified the 170 ,but now l recall you said on a previous show you were not modifying the 170 to keep the warranty in tact. My bad.
I do love your show and your enthusiasm and competitive attitude.
I like your show so much ,in August 2022 l purchased a brand new Challenger RT in F8 green.
Only option on my RT is the automatic trany. I have a spinal cord problem so l need the auto trany.
I could have purchased a Camero or Mustang ,but went with the Mopar for the traditional muscle body and especially the round headlight retro style.
I have been rer ended several times. Having a bigger car just makes me feel more visible on the road. Higher seat level makes it easier for me to enter and exit vehicle.
I see some drivers with portable car hand controls prefer the larger Challenger too.
I love my RT. I put less than 1000 miles per year ,so l will do well if l ever decide to resell.
If you have kept the 179 stock ,the dealer should cover the oil flow problem. Hopefully they find the fix for fast ,so we can get back to seeing a true stock 170 raceing again at the track.
Keepin my fingers crossed.
I love my RT. It sounds great. I don’t race it. Don’t burn the tires. I’m keepin it cream puff condition. Only drive it about once every week or two. Got plenty of power for my non racing needs. Just a cool cruder with a great stock sound. I’m keepin it totally stock for future generations to enjoy and collect.
Once again, l hope they find a quick simple solution. I hate to say, if it’s been there two weeks, it looks like they can’t figure it out.
I see they have made a “case study” of your 170.
Your 170 looks so cool on the road and at the track.
I guess l should get a RACERX cap. They do look cool. Hope you get caps in a lighter color for sunny day events. We should see your fans wearing RACERX caps at the track when you race.
Maybe give some out as a promotion ,to kids at the track?
Your show is great. I feel you should have a larger following, but there’s a lot of competition.
I saw how you modified the Mustang with nitro and you and others were impressed. I thought maybe you did the same with your 170.
Having your car in the shop is like having a sick pet at a pet hospital. It really gets to you.
I real hope they find and fix the oil flow issue.
The stock sound of my RT turns heads all the time. I keep it clean and covered.
Thanks for sticking with MOPAR. The best of luck to you and your shows future.👏👏👏🏎🏎🏎
My little 2012 Mustang GT only ran a 9.01@156 mph last fall. Had to leave at idle as I was not sure if the track would hold my Hoosier Drag Radials. Well, that got me kicked off the track due to no roll cage. I plan on installing a cage this summer. I was running a 72mm pulley. I wonder what it will run with my 63mm pulley? We shall see.
I’m a dodge technician as well. Suggest checking oil pressure with a manual gauge and it probably needs an oil control valve
Love the content RacerX! When I was looking at purchasing one of these, someone told me “the demon is a sweet car, but remember you’re paying over $100k for a dodge”
Well i wanted one of the demons but kinda glad i missed it , now looking at a ZL1 .
My 21 300s had some computer issues but when i took it back in dealership replaced the pcm and no issues since
Is G forces doing something to the oil pressure, it’s a beast off the line.
I imagined they checked for the oil pressure sensor is within electrical spec.
Also you can pull the oil filter off to release trapped air in the system somewhere to re prime the system.
The pressure regulator in the oil pump
is responsible for keeping the oil pressure in the system at the necessary pressure.
Hopefully your experience is better than mine. I had a star case that took 6 months for ram to do anything.
i went thru the same hassles last year with my SRT durango and it wasn't resolved because the dealership that i leased it from didn't have a mechanic qualified to work on it so they were guessing at the problem and had to contract the job out to another dealership to repair the problem which turned out to be a valve lifter. the dreaded hemi tik.
Hope you have better luck at that dealer than I did.
Bummmer. I'd think considering you being such a recognized high profile UA-camr that Dodge would jump on this ASAP. I know that if my 2023 Daytona had issues ( fingers crossed it won't!) I wouldn't be as composed as you ( even if it's just on camera!).I like many subscribers look forward to all updates.
Dodge has jumped on it. The SRT engineers have departed. Engneers that design Fiats and EV's are not going to be helpful. If you bought a Last Call anything it was a roll of the dice. If you bought a 170 your going to to be in for a lot of frustration since the resources to troubleshoot anything don't exist. The techs at the dealership have not been trained to work on these cars. They are learning as well. As Dodge folds your going to be left with no techs as they will move on. Kudos to RacerX for showing the reality of owning and driving the car as intended. For all those sitting for sale that have never been driven - your likely buying a pig in a poke. That Grand Wagoneer is pure garbage BTW. They can't fix the gremlims on those either.
Thanks for the update... the race against the Plaid officially has an ateriks until you car gets fixed lol
I hope they find the real issue. My gut feeling is that they will remedy the hell out of it.
Been wondering why didnt they offer a crate with this one ? ( skinny front tires etc)

Transmission converter lockout failure. The cam sensor threw a code, and it failed due to a low-pressure oil pump. It threw the loop out of the sink. They'll find the issue. Don't worry about it. But at the end of the day, it's likely a sensory issue.
Get trade it in for a Vette if the issue can't be fixed. You've always wanted one and it's an amazing car, the perfect exuse to get one if you ask me !
The vettes have had lots of problems too, new vehicles are junk

The 2023s really are bad. I paid 65k for a new 392 charger and have been bummed since day one on the quality of pretty much everything. It felt like things were falling apart since day one lmao. They raised the prices while lowering their already iffy quality. Going to the dealer for a fix is a nightmare

I can't believe that a company is selling a 9 second car with a WARRANTY!!! Most will have a clause that if you race them you bought them...and I don't blame them at all for that. Seems that a LOT of the 170's don't perform as advertised and dealers are getting crushed with them coming back under warranty. Not a good situation here at all.
Plaid is a low 9 second car with a warranty and can withstand many 100’s of passes (possibly 1000’s).

I'm new to the dodge community, and I'm browsing the market for one. What problems are you having with your scat?
I think there is a problem with your oil pressure pump or the oil pressure sensor, did they check it manually with the oil pressure gauge and compare the reading to there witech scantool input data?
Did you changed the oil after your breaking period ? Hopefully because it's written black on white that if you track that car you need to change the break in oil..
What dealership was this at? I'm here in Tampa and have a gomango T/A which looks just like the one behind your head lol
Sorry for the issues with your 170 Racer X.. But, thanks for providing the codes and a breakdown of them.. Watching this it just reminds me that ALL these vehicles use a crap ton of redundant grounds.. The fact that you have codes that seam to be unrelated to just oil pressure and and cam timing just screams to me that they all have to be somehow related. If you can find how they are all related it will point you to the root cause and the fix. Sadly, this takes time and experience to diagnose. Unfortunately, the current trend with new vehicles today is to load up the "Parts Cannon" and hope that ya can fix it within three attempts.. if not, buy it back and put the customer in something else. It is sad! I have been out of the industry for a long while now but, in my time I have seen more than my share of vehicles come from the factory with loose or disconnected grounds that raised hell with the ECM and cause the same types of problems you are having with your 170. Just my thought for wat they are worth.. Good luck and hope they sort it out soon!
Damn. It's crazy how all these new cars have issues lately. From all manufacturers.
I have a feeling it accelerates so hard that your oil pump isn’t able to pick up and pump enough oil. Loss of oil pressure and volume basically. Had that problem with a built Kawasaki years ago. Luckily an aftermarket company came up with a dry sump conversion that solved the problem.
That seems like an accurate theoretical possibility but don't you think the Demon engineers already thunk of that and designed accordingly? I would hope they did.
If It is a oil pressure related issue, makes me wonder if the oil pump is having a issue under extreme load with oil dissolution. The reason I say this is using High ethanol based fuels one of its drawbacks is the amount of dissolution, and contamination that occurs in the oil therefore requiring more frequent oil changes. On our Racecar we would change our oil every 3 races because we noticed water droplets in the oil from condensation when doing valve lash adjustments we were running Ethanol. With you living in Florida which has higher than normal humidity and the use of E85 I wonder if this is exacerbates the issue and the sensors start adjusting because the oil is getting diluted. What do I know ??? Hopefully they will get to root of the problem Paul....Frustrating as it may be.
You beat the piss out of it what do you expect? It's not invincible.
It is a " FACTORY BUILT" race car and i am being generous with the word race. Real race cars do not come off a production line.
Did your car still have the champion brand spark plugs in it? I know they have already been superseded by the Bosch ones that come in the redeyes, I believe.
Hey RacerX, Ron Silva makes a plug using a factory wiring harness for that passenger seat removal that will eliminate the AIR BAG CODES. BTW, he is running 8's with his 170..
Yes I talk to Ron all the time.. we talked about that harness. Also keep in mind that Ron was running his Demon in California with much better DA and he has quite a bit done to his car .. trust me 😉. My car is essentially a stock car. Just a few things to keep in mind
Simple quick check would be to temporarily install a mechanical oil pressure guage and check the actual pressure, if normal, try another oil pressure sensor. Hopefully, it is just a sensor or computer glitch. That being said, after watching this and all your other 170 videos, I am SO GLAD I didn't buy one of these. I was set to until the greedy dealer tried to rip me off with ridiculous markups. They look like they are impossible to race consistently, and in drag racing that is essential. I'll just stick to my lowly 1320, it runs like a Swiss watch, super easy to drive, and very consistent; three years now and zero issues. If I get to the point to where I cannot live without a 9 second car I'll just get a Tesla...
News flash!!!! The engineering ICE team has been laid off. But you can talk to their electrical engineer they just hired!
They will take care of it.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
The dealership wants nothing to do with that car they don't know how to service it in the slightest
