    I like the dual clutch technology I have owned several six and 7 speed cars
    they are not as smooth as full automatic or torq converter type at lower speeds. the old 7 speed dry clutch could get a bit lurchy in stop start traffic

    I like AWD all the time. I do not like relying on any computer. I live in Costa Rica lots of rain and off road conditions. Do you have the option to engage AWD mode or it only transitions through the computer system when it feels it's necessary.

    Does the new Q5 (or current generation) ride stiffer than a RDX? I find that the RDX is way to floaty when im going over bumpy roads at higher speeds... I don't want the Q5 to be like a RDX.

    Here's a tip for you, automotive journalist: Transverse means the OPPOSITE of longitudinal. Transverse means the cylinders and crankshaft are oriented from side to side like most FWD cars. Longitudinal means they're oriented front to back. The A3, TT, and the Q3 -- in other words, the Audis based on the Golf platform -- have transverse-mounted engines. The rest of the Audi lineup have longitudinally mounted engines, even the FWD A4s,

    • @MikeKayK

    • @MikeKayK
      @MikeKayK 7 років тому +1

      Thomas Rock Did you mean to say that rear-biased AWD systems are ONLY found in longitudinally mounted engines, and that front-biased AWD systems can be found with both engine configurations? Because the new Q5 has a longitudinally mounted engine and it is NOT a rear-biased all wheel drive system.

    • @MikeKayK
      @MikeKayK 7 років тому

      Lux Ingens No, the new Q5 is a front-biased AWD system. There's a clutch that disengages the rear wheels when deemed unnecessary, such as if you're driving straight on a dry road.

  • @averagedriving3979

    • @-.__.__.-Rad
      @-.__.__.-Rad Рік тому

      This is natively a rear wheel drive adapted to front wheel drive primarily... A little weird but definitely rear wheel based. Due to their different transfer case design, it is easy for them to this...Part of the reason why the engine is so much in front of the front wheels.. My 21 a5 sportback has the same engine. The powertrain is not the ultra quattro though, it's still 60% rear based, permanent awd...
      I don't like the quattro ultra either, but whatever...

    I wish the high command at Audi added a 42V electrical system and their new electric supercharger to the motor to give it better gas mileage and no turbo lag and better fuel economy to make up for the fact it is being made cheaper in Mexico to justify the price instead of line their pockets in profit to pay for diesel gate.

    • @keithnewton8981
      @keithnewton8981 7 років тому

      in order to pay for diesel gate as you call it over 3000 people have no job in the new year as the VW group close a factory in Germany. that the real human price for what we in Europe believe was industrial espionage sponsored by American car manufacturers and the Government. as a result of Germany's anti American stance.
      The UK and other European nation are beginning to loose faith in the USA

    • @pennfootball71
      @pennfootball71 7 років тому

      Keith Newton American car manufacterers have nothing to do with it you putz. VW sales in the usa are less than 300k cars a year..Ford sells over 600,000 F150's! VW is a drop in a bucket! They are getting more in trouble in Europe then they did in the USA.

    • @keithnewton8981

      Audi like other others non American manufactures are trying to get Americans to be more responsible around fuel consumption and co2 emission plus when they add electric motors very soon the 2ltr will be more than enough..
      you Americans have been slow to respond to the development of small capacity high power engines so you are lagging the rest of the developed world when it comes to engine technology you are using engines from the 1980 and you need to move on VW group have made a conscious effort to move to greener car and total ev model range very soon. It's time the USA caught up with engine technology

    • @ryanconklin1440
      @ryanconklin1440 7 років тому

      Keith,
      I appreciate you insight and the idea to become more socially responsible. I also see cars as part of visceral experience. By moving to more eco-friendly cars we are moving towards bland and uninspiring performance. Cars will eventually and sadly evolve into something mundane such as piece of clothing you wear or a tool you use to get from point A to B. I am realizing if people want an enthusiast option regarding car choice they will need to shell out the big money for Supercars. They will evadably be our savor. Keith I appreciate your view. Thanks for your insight.

    • @ryanconklin1440
      @ryanconklin1440 7 років тому

      Jeff K,
      I actually own a 2013 S4 which I love despite the ride being quite harsh. The direct throttle input you get from the Supercharged 3.0 V6 is amazing. I do find that 2013 S-tronic in my car is a bit slow to respond to downshifts in sport mode, but willing to hold out gears longer on up shifts. It may just be me. I would actually like a wagon or an estate (as they say in more developed countries...lol). This is because they give the utility of SUV with the handling of car.

  • @joebarnhart4460

    Nope. Not gonna buy another Q5 until I can get TDI. It's the most amazing power plant I've owned in a car. Now that I've had the best, I'm never going back to mere gasoline again. Not too keen on the non-full-time AWD either. The quattro system makes the car handle so balanced on dry pavement I can't imagine why they'd go backwards on that one. Plus I'm not keen on extra crap and 1/5 sec. gap when I need all wheels driving.
    I have to say, this preview is pretty disappointing as a current 2016 Q5 TDI owner.

    So whats the big deal with 'disengage-able' all wheel drive? The Mitsu's however lowly their ranking now may be had selectable AWC including a lock. I always thought Subaru's SAWD and Audi's Quattro were cool as they drove all 4 wheels. Several SUVs and CUVs with AWD automatically control amount of power sent to the wheels depending on driving situation. Predominantly front wheels. I would have liked this if the primary bias was to the rear. But nope! Acura SHAWD any day....I did not understand the buzz about Ultra Quattro... may be I missed something critical or is it just hype....?

      Rediscover this all wheel drive system can be found in so many car these days it's a good system. some of the earlier one had to be serviced very carefully and many grease monkeys where not careful enough about oil seals and the correct oils and doing the services on time. so warning lights would come like a Christmas light display.
      but over time things have got better.

    They just keep trying to take all the control away from the driver. And that might make it easier to handle the traffic, but it can get really dangerous on some off roads. It's a shame cause most of the great off road cars are either really big and sometimes you might not have enough space for them, or really old with an interior that feels like sitting on a street bench

      @texnorthman 7 років тому +3

      Intrepid Milotic Depends what you want an AWD system for :) If it is just for a bit of added grip and the ability to get up a snowy hill then Haldex and similar systems are fine. If you want something that makes a car more fun to drive then I found it to be pretty poor. The cars are essentially front wheel driven in feel, and never get that lovely rear drive over steering balance that the rear-biased Torsen diff in the proper Quattro system gives.

    • @texnorthman
      @texnorthman 7 років тому

      My understanding is that all the manual cars still have proper centre diffs, and the WRX STI even has torsen diffs front and rear. The auto's have some strange viscous coupling though.

    • @Michael0697
      @Michael0697 7 років тому

      DSG, is a semi-manual/semi-automatic transmissions.
      Dual Clutch Transmissions operate much like manual transmissions, however, they are faster, more efficient, and can even last longer with a binary clutch (one for even gears, one for odd), which means that it's already ready to shift into the next gear before you even want it. The DCT, whilst also manually operable in most instances, however, can be used in an 'automatic format', which means that most people would consider the DCT a 'semi-automatic', as it offers a software based, automatic shifting.

      Tan N you are wrong the new 7 s tronic is a seven speed dual clutch semi automatic not full automatic, VW group have moved away from traditional automatic that's why I was surprised when he said it was automatic. These car people need to get there facts correct and it a wet clutch as apposed to the old 7 speed dry .

      Technically, you're wrong. It also sounds like you have never driven a VW/Audi with DSG/S-tronic. When you put the gear lever into "D" or "S", it drives mostly like an automatic. I say mostly because it doesn't have a torque converter, which creeps the car forward. It will shift up and down automatically, like an conventional automatic, but, at a much faster rate.

    • @keithnewton8981
      @keithnewton8981 7 років тому

      Tan N I cannot be technically wrong because a DSG does not have a torque converter all full automatics have a torque converter. The DSG had a clutch system and in this case it's a due clutch which it can select thous giving a better gear change as apposed to the single clutch automated manual used by one PSA group cars and some ford city cars.
      The DSG has a automated mode in which it simulate an automatic gearbox, however you can still get a small amount of jerkiness in stop start traffic which you do not get in a fluid guild torque converter of a normal traditional automatic gear box VW group never say it an automatic gearbox they say it a day or s tronic with a automatic mode. As I have the the pleasure of owning several DSG or s-tronic gear box's I do have some insight into this I also own automated manual, and CVT so I well placed to compare these semi automatic over a standard automatic like that found in Mercedes or GM cars.
      The Mercedes 7 and 9 speed automatics are exceptionally good and can match the DSG fuel economy advantage and there torque converter are over a half size smaller than they where 8 years ago the fin technology going into these new milled cast torque converter s is spectacular. Currently DSG are still not as smooth in all types of traffic. But a duel clutch system will! Only ever be a simulated automatic

    I like the way you get wood trim in Europe and the UK we are forced to have metal or silver trim and I personally hate it . there nothing that say cheap low rent car than metal silver trim brushed alloy is the lowest of the low chrome door handles are fine chrome or stainless pin strip line to hide a gap or act as a finisher ok but huge piece of brushed silver metal says cheap and nasty with no class same a milled alloy on cars I hate it. carbon fibre is not much better and this mixing carbon fibre and leather on the seat is something I expect from Chinese cars.

    I absolutely hate my 2019 Q5 quattro system. The quattro system fails every time when driving on snow and ice. So I drive it in off-road mode during winter and comfort mode in Summer. These cars are never meant for Canadian road conditions. I'll never buy an Audi again. It isn't a premium car anymore. I wish they go back to the Torsen differential and ditch Haldex. Stay away from quattro system, Canadians. It's not a full time AWD car anymore.

    Hey Roman. Much respect im a big fan of the show and the team. In all due respect though. This new quattro ultra is not a quattro at all. Audi is killing its legacy and legend by doing this. I actually strongly considered an allroad until i discovered that it has this new part time system. If i wanted that id get a nissan or a honda. Im glad that the system is great and all that... it's all marketing bs and we all know that. You know whats even faster than 200ms or half second??? It's a system thats already engaged in the first place and using cogs and metal parts not clutches.
    What a disappointment... how can they do this to themselves? I just dont get it. Perhaps i am wrong anyway as thousands of mindless americans will spend 50k and not give a sh... about what they are buying.

      maxbassful I understand what you are saying but it make sense. the most off roaring these cars see will be a grass verge or a field if it's luck. most of the time it's on the road and so to reduce fuel consumption and co2 output it make.
      the average driver does not need a permanent 4 wheel drive .They just want the add feel good factor that is it bring them in winter and the slippier surfaces but many people forget about the tyres it does not matter how good you awd is with the wrong tyre fitter it make no difference. Tyre are really important and people are not getting this message

      maxbassful The reason why is, its uneccesary to have quttro all of the time, it uses too much gas then, but its not that bad, in just 0,2 seconds the quattro activates

    • @maxbassful
      @maxbassful 7 років тому +1

      Hi shakke52. Do you know what the fuel savings are.... 5% at best. Nothing beats permanent 4x4. Quattro is what Audi's reputation is built on, this new system is not a true Quattro. Neither are the system in the A3, TT and Q3.

    No way is any Q5 owner gonna take their Q5 off road. Farm track ? Cone covered woodland track ? But no way is this car gonna go over rocks or traverse a deep stream. This car will spend 99% of its time on normal roads taking kids to school and going to the supermarket. The interior is full of cheap plastic and the MK1 model was a more robust and better put together car. Hard plastic door pulls, cheap plastic door cards, panels that warp and dubious build quality since they moved to Mexico from Germany. It’s a down grade from the previous model. Sad because the MK1 was what made the Q5

    Audi really need to fire its chief exterior designers, so maybe it'll start producing attractive cars again.
    Changing to FWD-oriented "AWD" is a poor decision; most buyers of this price range really don't care about gaining that 2mpg, they pick the German brands over Lexus because they want better driving dynamics, not better fuel economy.

    It’s not and never will be an off roader. Mk1 was a more solid and better put together car. This is what happens when you try to cut costs and get your cars built in Mexico rather than Germany. A real shame as this was so good a car. And the inside is full of plastic panels with a £5000 mark up over the outgoing models starting price. Stay away from this one.

  • @richardrutter1754

    The quattro ultra mode sounds like another software problem waiting to happen. For the amount of money Audi charges it shouldn't screw with what makes Audi an Audi. This part time quattro system is total bullshit because it should be driver controlled not software driven. the interior of the car is very cheap looking. I guess that is why it is being built in Mexico. It will be only a matter of time that the Q5 will start to fail. Audi is changing the wrong items. I have a 2015 Q5 and will not be buying another one. Audi overcharges for repairs and really has poor customer service.
