I often ran into Tabu in Nairobi. His daughter went the University there. He had children studying in a few Universities over the World. He did have some vocal problems aound 1975 but everything was back to normal by 1980. I spent some good nights in the Nairobi Intercontinental Grill sitting around with my lady friends, Tabu, calm and wise, and many leading lights of African music and politics; oh, Larry Adler too. Sometimes the other patrons would get a bonus for their ticket when of us would jump to do a number with the house band. Tabu would usually do a Lingala version of "Let it Be" when he was inclined. Its a memory of very talented and wise man. Larry Adler was terrific too. I could write all night about those blessed moments. Just good memories before AIDS fell on Africa, although in Kenya we escaped the nightmare vistas that I picked my way through in Zambia and Uganda with intercene wars adding a continual backdrop.
Franco defined Congloese music and continues to be the yard stick for current and future musicians. Diblo Dibala played the guitar for Ok jazz as a little boy after he won a school contest...Tabu Ley and sam Mangwana performed together with Franco...so did .Mbilia Bel so iwonder where was the monoploy....Franco was not a state agent in fact he was jailed on more than one occassion when he criticised the system

Rochereau imho was the best music arranger of the time. To understand how good he was, he managed to establish himself in the era of the state sponsored monopoly that was TPOK Jazz. There is something melodic and sweet about how tabuley's music flows. Its a gift not many musicians have.

Tabu ley was excellent. But franco really brought out the talent in his musicians. As we see here dizzy and manana were with tabu let here. Their best work was performed with franco. Franco's style was unmatched. We will never have another like franco luambo.makiadi. he was the best of the best!!!
Of course, but then, let's base our opinions on facts. Franco left most of the arranging to band members, with the exception of his own compositions, and most of the arrangements you hear in this video were not Ley's own either. Since you present your opinions in absolute terms, I could say: perhaps you yourself never understood how good Franco was. So I'm glad I interviewed Dizzy Mandjeku, for instance, who plays in this video. He would never dream of making a statement as bold as yours.
I always wonder why people claim that Franco was better than Tabu Ley! Both of them were special awards from the almighty God. The differences between them bring us fantastical flavor.
A sdenge, Franco defined Congolese Music? I don't share your opinion. Because Franco when he was alive was criticised for being monotonous and was killing Congolese music? Luckily Tabu was there to carry the bar very high. The longevity of Franco in my view was due to his closeness with Mobutu (just like a certain Wera today), I am not denying Tabu had access to Mobutu's generosity as well.
max debo I don't agree with your comment Max, I think Franco made his way and other success because he was selfmotivated person with all the skills of a Leader...... Tabu Ley was so talented and great song writter, but we have to recognize that Franco was someone very special for his time, full of charism (a life coincidance made him meet Mobutu, but Mobutu did not make Franco or his music)
max debo Music is Music. In this clip for the kin music connoisseur, the focus should be on Sam Mangwana. I like Tabu Ley very much, precisely in his younger version. And later with reservations, only when listening to Ley’s studio recorded music. After 1980s, Ley apparently had big shortcomings with his voice, especially because he insisted on singing in his teenager contralto of 1950s and 1960s. In mid 1980s, I had the opportunity of listening to Tabu Ley and Franco in Nairobi. In Leys show, seigneur sang the first stanzas of “maze” and I noticed, he lost his voice on the way and could not hit the high notes, forcing the band to immaturely proceed to the guitar dancable climax. Thereafter, the whole show was left to Mbilia Bel, Mekanisi Modero and the dancers and Tabu Ley retreated to the background and remained there until the end of the show. In contrast Franco sang in his unaltered and unaging baritone and played the guitar, occasionally making it talk. He was explaining every song (e.g. Tres Impoli, Nabali Misere, Bina na Ngai Na Respect etc) to the Kenyan audience through a Swahili translator and regularly did a very likable guitar dialogue with the saxophonist. This was after collecting from the audience the list of the songs they wanted to listen, watch and dance to. All in all this was Franco’s band, even though most of the singing was done by the TPOK renowned vocalists. Back to this clip; you see a contrast between Tabu Ley and Sam Mangwana, especially because Tabu sings in a voice that is evading him (good but unsustainable). Mangwana on the other hand hits the right notes and appears to be quite at home singing what he is singing. By the way, the other Congolese musician with the same gift as Sam Mangwana is Nyboma. For doubting Thomases, listen to e.g. Lisala Ngomba, and enjoy Sam Mangwana hit a tone which Tabu Ley does not at 31:35 and then we can talk.

Kinshasa.
