How To: Dave's Mod on XR650L [5 Minutes - fixed audio w. additional tips]

  • This is a basic mod that helps throttle response significantly! In addition to Dave's Mod many other people also buy a UNI air filter, install a new exhaust, and desnorkel their bike. In total this cost me $14 rather than the dynojet kits which are significantly more $$$. In my case, I have a UNI air filter and bought an XR's Only Header & Exhaust following this mod I did. If you have any questions- put them in the comments below, and I'll be glad to answer them! Thank you again for all your support.

    Another way to mod the mix screw is cut some of the tab off, but just enough so it barely clears the bowl. Then cut a 1 or 2mm notch into the side of the tab and slip a 8x2mm o-ring around the screw, into the notch. The o-ring will press lightly against the bowl tab and prevent free movement, it is also easily removable for adjustment.

      Or just go the smart route and buy a Smart Carb or Lectron Pro carb.

    Question... I just got my '23 XR650L and plan on doing a Yoshi RS-2 slip on and de-smogging... I live at about 4750ft above sea level..... Would you recommend de-snorkel and 158 main for this? should I start a bit leaner on the main? What do you think?
    And, is there a handy chart on what others have done? or a 'basic jet guide' similar to what JD Jet Kits puts in their DR-Z400 kit??

      Consider buying 52 & 155 jets and the standard Dave's Mod 55 & 158 jets. It's always a bit of experimenting. If 55 requires no choke use the 52. And if you have black smoke or a super black colored spark plug tip on using the 158, use the 155. Hope this helps!

      I'm certainly not Dave, but that's just the name everyone knows this mod by. Glad you liked the video! 🙂

    You have a hose running from one side of your carb to the other with a T in the middle that was capped off when you removed your smog stuff. Is there any reason why you wouldn't remove that hose and put a cap on each side of the carb where the hose currently connects?

    • @one_terrabike3151
      @one_terrabike3151  2 роки тому +3

      Yes actually. By leaving that hose connected you're still left with the Air Cutoff Valve being functional which is the assembly in charge of reducing backfiring upon deceleration, but making the fuel mixture richer.

  • @kilwager

    It looks like the fuel mixture screw-top is missing on mine as it does with several other photos I've seen online. Is there another variation of this carb?

    • @one_terrabike3151
      @one_terrabike3151  2 роки тому +1

      Yours likely is newer, so there is a plug covering it. Many people drill a small hole and pull it out with a wood screw. Look this up! :)

      You're welcome! I really do love that jetting for my bike! Most of my riding is in GA currently, so for me I ride between 1k-5k ft max in elevation. I average anywhere from 40-45 mpg, but to me that's impressive considering I run a high comp piston now. I am now out at 3 turns on my mixture screw, so I'm thinking about trying the next size up there and seeing how it runs!

      @@one_terrabike3151 Great info. I’m up in Connecticut and recently desmogged the bike. Bike is all stock now and was wondering about doing this mod and opening up the air box. Just noticed all your other great videos. I’ll be checking them out! Thanks for all your work!

      @@steviesaintanko2368 You can open up the airbox a smidge by desnorkeling the bike-- and of course I made a video of that already! :) I've been debating on adding UNI 1" foam air filter cutouts on the top of the airbox to allow even more air through though- I probably wouldn't make a video of cutting 1" holes though XD. You can always patch the airbox back to normal though. Say I had a 1" hole I didnt want: I could put duck tape on the inside of the airbox and apply a black epoxy to the outside- let dry, pull of the duck tape carefully after 2 days, and bam- no hole :)

      you might be running either too rich or lean. You should look at your spark plug's color and see if its white (lean) or rich (black) on the tip!

    How does drilling the slide make it work better ?

    • @winstonpoplin
      @winstonpoplin 6 днів тому

      Being a CV carb the slide moves up and down using air pressure. So with bigger holes for the air to move the air pressure can more quickly switch and thus the slide can move up and down faster.

    • @one_terrabike3151
      @one_terrabike3151  2 роки тому +2

      They've been making the XR leaner and leaner it seems over the years so you'd certainly see an improvement. If you do it I'd recommend a new air filter (foam), desnorkel, and a new exhaust. Best of luck & thanks for watching!

      I just bought a new xr650l too... Do I just buy the stage 1 kit from the website you provided and then purchase the washer from a hardware store?? i appreciate your time man and look forward to your response... I finally bought my dream bike that I've wanted for over 15 years and she runs like poop!!! Also, I plan on doing the other mods you mention.... thanks

      @@BNiem808 I, myself, got the dynojet stage 1 kit with possibly doing the mod of daves mod and thrill billys mod, but, i ultimately went with daves mod. i also went to jets-r-us and bought a few extra main and pilot jets and then i used the washer out of the dynojet kit. works for me so far. right now im running the daves mod jetting (158/55) and desnorked bike, foam filter, and a slip on Lexx exhaust. WOW! what a difference it made in my bike for MY ELEVATION. APPROX. 800FT. it totally rips now. Good luck on mod. i hope it works out great for you as well if you decide to do it.

      @@jeffkise6504 thanks man. at what mileage did you do the mods.... i literally only have 20 mi on her still breaking her in... also, do you know what size pilot jet you used?? is it a 28mm or a 23.5mm?

    • @jeffkise6504
      @jeffkise6504 2 роки тому +1

      @@BNiem808 no problem man. yeah my bike is new as well. i think it only had 215 miles on it. since ive ridden maybe another 50 or so. the pilot was a 55 (23.5mm). 158 main. so far, this combo is working for me at my altitude. if i end up doing any more engine mods i will likely have to experiment with my jetting. this is one reason why i just bought several different sizes either side of stock jetting and plus if i can ever get things together and do an out west trip. but anyways good luck and i believe you said your bike was pretty new too. recommend changing that front drive sprocket...either primary driver (RMATVMC) or Fritzco (Ebay or procycle).
