I totally get it... You're putting *your* time, energy, and money into a car that is worth something *to you*. Creating for yourself a car that will get you anywhere you want to go, with absolutely no worries whatsoever -- no worries that it's going to leave you stranded, and no worries that someone will ding it in a parking lot or a piece of road-debris will take a bite out of the paint. Makes total sense to me.
Reminds me of my old 1992 acura integra with 220,000 miles, probably the best car i ever had, beat the hell out of it everyday never even came close to quitting, i should have kept it.
I've always thought the Vigor was a cool car, I was pretty excited to see that you bought one. I think the fact that it was sort of an oddball car and there's not many left gives it a special charm.
My first car was a 91 Acura legend and a friend had a Vigor. They were great driving experiences, hence me still driving an Acura to this day. The 90's was a great decade for Honda. Most of their cars are worth restoring or maintaining from that time. They really were over engineered vehicles, vehicles that will outrun most modern day vehicles that are obviously designed under a "it only needs to last 4 years motto."
US protection laws prevent you from getting any other Honda with that particular engine. There is a Honda Inspire which is identical to the Acura Vigor, the 2nd gen Inspire, the Honda Rafaga, Sabre, Ascot.
All the reasons you've listed is why I love my 94 f150 5.0. It's 4x4 which is nice, and it's all original save for the exhaust. It's my daily driver and my hunting rig. I still listen to old cassette tapes in the thing and like you said if i'm at the grocery store and theirs shopping carts in my way I'll plow straight through. While hunting i'll mow over anything I can run into in the bush no problems. Best of all it was dirt cheap, it got pulled out of a scrap yard and brought back to life.
back in high school my first car was a 1992 Accord and I loved that car so much! the 90 thru 93 accords were my favorite and had that classic Honda feel. I got a 1995 Prelude in college and DAMN that car was ahead of its time! I loved that car also but for some odd reason I still loved that Accord. Now I am old and Hondas have changed so much since the early days. They don't have that same Honda feel anymore in my opinion so I went to the next best thing, Lexus.
This sums up how I felt about my 96 Chevy APV. It was big, it was ugly (and so was/am I), but it was comfortable, it had good A/C, and it never failed to start up and get me where I needed to go. Even in its final months when the head gasket started letting go, it never once protested when I fired it up and it still ran like it wanted to run forever. It became a ritual every few days that I had to siphon out the excess coolant from the reservoir and put it back in the radiator. By the end of its life, I knew that van better than anyone else. And I didn't have to be afraid of bouncing it off an obstacle or two now and then, either. Good times. Rest in peace "Lu" 1996-2011.
I owned a 1994 Acura Vigor and sold it in the year 2000. Hey boys and girls, can we say, "Dumb Move?" Yes, it was dumb to sell it. It was the most reliable and comfortable ride I had ever owned. In town the car averaged approximately 23MPG, and on the highway, approximately 29 MPG. The maintenance on my vehicle was minimal. The only part I needed replaced was the fuel tank sensor. It was a warrantied part so for me, it was a no charger, but out of warranty and I would have had to pay $225.00. The only other maintenance was the 30,000 mile service interval. In regards to service intervals, never take the advice of the dealership, because for them it is a cash cow. The dealership can only recommend the intervals and of course their pricing is way over the top. They wanted $750.00. However, I took my Vigor to my very honest independent Honda service center and had the manufacturer's service done for only $275.00. Great car, and again I still regret having sold it. Thanks for reading, Tony
Love your love for the vigor! I had a 95 Acura Legend GS and man I can't even describe my love for that car, maybe because it was my first car, but it never once had a single issue, it got totaled at 200k and I ended up with a 99 Lexus GS as the replacement. A nicer car in just about every regard but I still really miss that legend, I had quite the bond with it and may buy one as a winter beater if I can find a good condition one
I just scored a '93 Vigor GS for $1,500 from an estate sale. Your color (red) 82,000 miles. Brand new Michelin tires, all dealer repair records (boy did that dealer SCREW those poor people!) My mechanic says it's totally clean but needs new muffler. One ding in passenger door, but everything else is MINT. Always garaged, interior perfect. The radio code doesn't work -- radio just says "code". I read I have to pull the antenna to get code to work, but I'm going to change the radio anyway because I want CD, Bluetooth etc. I love the "two goombah" trunk!
Here's a tip I just learned. If the alternator develops a short, it will often (as in my case) melt the cam & crank shaft sensor. When that goes, it means you first have to find another sensor (eBay) and get somebody to replace it, and while you're at it you do the timing belt and water pump, because the labor is more than the parts. So if your alternator is old, best to swap it early than do that kind of repair! And I got the exhaust repair done at the same place, quite a while ago. Oddly the tube just behind the muffler had holes IN THE TOP you could stick fingers through.
I was always into cars but only as a hobby, I finally decided to got myself a 03 Nissan Almera to just experiment on and learn stuff. I did minor things on my Mondeo and my wifes Aygo but this is going to be great. Thank for your insertion Eric.
Mid 90's, japanese, full / many options.. thats what i was looking for as a reliable POS. Its actually in the workshop today, recieving a 'pass' on the yearly check up in a few hours! Its been precheck, so issues have been adressed allready. All i needed was a new LH control arm, for a worn out ball joint and rubbers. Other issues that occured last year have been sorted out, so like you, i'm quite pleased with my POS at the moment! Got it 50 000 miles ago for 500,-. Its needed a exhaust downpipe (pricy) new rotors in the front, 4 new tires (twice now) and a timing belt over the past 2 years.. but all in all i'm very pleased! Cheapest and best car i've ever owned at the same time.
You know you could "Dip" this car. Using Plasticoat to put a coat of protection on this thing and prevent it from peeling apart further. Just an idea. The cool thing about "Dip" is that you can peel it off later if you don't like it. It would make a great couple of videos if you were to paint it yourself - since "Dip" is made for the do-it-yourselfer anyway. My neighbor 3 houses down dipped his Son's POS - same exact problem you have - and he made it the same color as the car itself. Handles a pressure washer and the whole nine. Looks really good.
Dude. I drive that exact car (1993 Vigor GS), except mine's a 5 speed. I couldn't agree more with your philosophy on this car, except that mine seems to come alive at 5500 rpm or so, especially the exhaust note with the windows down. There's something very special about these cars, and it's nice to know someone else knows what I'm talking about.
Awesome video, wife and I bought a used 1993 Honda accord many years ago, gave it to our daughter and she got t-boned in it..she was ok, my wife and I bought another Accord,a former lease vehicle, great car,no issues at all,put many miles on it with just basic maintenance.
I drive my Integra 89 until it was impossible under the rain to don't get we because of the rust holes on it there every where. I truly loved that car and exactly as you mentioned in your video I use to love the fact that no one would think for a second to rove, brake in, or other wise vandalize it! AC, Sun Ruf, Engine and performance where flawless... it was very hard to let that car go! and even do I drive an other of that type of old cars " MX3 92" I still miss a lot my old Acura. it was my dream car! It have power, speed and a suspension that make any Lincoln envious!
I have a 1997 2.5 with 159,000 & I keep her super clean. Her paint job is top of line. I actually have mine at my shop with the motor & tranny down. I just got the head rebuilt & replaced the rear main seal, timing belt, water pump & rack rebuild. I spent in total about 800 & almost done getting her back on the road. Well worth the time and money.
Hey i'm only a recent sub but I just wanted to thank you for a dope channel. I just inherited my first reliable POS last month, a 1996 Ford Laser 1.6l DOHC 5spd manual (MAZDA B6 engine was in a bunch of other 'whips' inc Miata but Nth Sth) Your videos and advice/help assisted me in first changing oil & filter to cutting and polishing heavily oxidised paint to removing and reassembling my front hubs and brakes (after machining.) A few visits to the wreckers for some stray hoses and dilapidated rubbers. And then the ticking started. WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY. Rocker cover. OFF! Removed cams cleaned and replaced collapsed HLAS that were needed. Reset cams and replace belts and reset timing. Thumbs up. Rear boot lock was broken into, wreckers had the whole rear boot panel glass lock & spoiler $10 Worked that out and i've got myself something now. I LOVE it. Something that would have been a shitbox without your help, is now running 180000kms young. Now all im waiting for is an excuse to get into the bottom of the thing to have a look haha. But most importantly thank you. Your info is not only well presented but its spot on. Now look i'm not wearing a skirt, but at the same time would have no trouble calling you a charismatic fella. So cheers mate, your bloody good bloke.
I was the same way with the 1994 Geo Prizm that I used to own. I didnt care what really happened to the body or paint, as long as I kept the mechanics of it in good shape, but with my 2003 Lancer ES, i take care of it like its a baby.
A few weeks ago, i saw an old BMW 5 series with a little sticker on it. "I dont need to drive an old car. I want!" :-) Hope my Translation is correct...
as you implied, Eric, what makes it so much fun is that you are not in debt and I share that sentiment. I've never bought a new car and never will. Our obsession with the latest cars is insane.
I used to own a '92 Vigor, and that was the best car I ever owned...by far. I loved the way it handled and the upgraded stereo system with the selection of different sound modes was really cool. unfortunately, got married and with kids on the way, we traded it in on a (groan) mini-van. I tell you, I mourned for that car for weeks. I just got into a '15 TLX and I am getting the same kind of experiences I once had with the Vigor. it is a wonderful machine. Thanks for your videos, I've been enjoying them.
I have a '01 Toyota Corolla that I use every day for a daily beater. The clear coat is peeling in places and it has scratches in the paintwork but it is mechanically perfect. I totally get what you are saying in this video that it is nice to drive a car that you don't have to worry about. You can leave it unlocked when you run into a shop to buy something and not have to worry.
I bought a 92 vigor back in August as a project car for my daughter. Aftermarket parts are really hard to find, but it is a really solid car. I bought it from the original owner. Only issue really was the radio didn't work and the clear-coat on the roof is peeling. The interior is like a new car.
I bought a 93 vigor in 98 and drove it til 2010 and absolutely loved that car. It drove really well and it was a comfortable interior. It had 260+ miles on it
What a great deal Eric. I didn't realize the mileage was so low!!! I have a 94 Acura Legend LS, and it's definitely in the "POS" range. However, aside from some major repairs (engine replaced 3+ years ago) and a few minor ones (boot replaced on passenger side, transmission service, rear brakes replaced) and the clear coat's pealing on the hood of my car too, its a fun car to drive, which attracts little attention. It's got some dents, dings and rust (rear finder wells, typical of Hondas and Acuras) but we (my wife and I) really enjoy driving it. I used to want really nice, high end vehicles, but I would probably be staring out the window most of the time at work, or afraid to leave it unattended in the parking lot. I thank God I don't have THAT life! Thanks for the video!
On the stealth factor. That is something I did not consider when I picked up my 99 honda accord. I however have come to enjoy driving that car to stores as when I drive my other cars I always worry about it. The accord has seen its time in battle no one looks twice at it. Thanks for the video!
Well said. I miss my 92 Vigor GS! Great motor and great sound, solid car sans the rust. Glad to see some Vigor love and yes you can't find them! none on eBay right now. Thanks for posting. Did you have an issue with the distributor oil leak? Also would be cool if you did a video that got into detail about the whole engine, trans, axle in the block with this motor.
i completely agree with your rationale for restoring and enjoying your acura vigor. i have a toyota geo prism that i paid 500 dollars for two years ago and it has been absolutely flawless for transportation and i have upgraded the brakes and other improvements. its a 1995 and has a stick shift and always starts in any weather condition and after sitting for long periods of time
15 years ago I bought my first car and it was 93 Vigor 5speed! Since then, I had probly about dozen diff cars and I still greatly miss my Vigor! Such a fun car to drive! I am actually thinking about getting one again (or legend couple 6speed) those Acuras from 90's were pretty good realible cars.
Your experience with your Vigor is a lot like my experience with my 1997 SAAB 900s. I bought it for basically $500 in horrible shape, and I've spent a lot more than that over the past year bringing it back to not-scary-to-drive shape. It's never left me stranded though, and I absolutely love driving it.
I can agree. I bought my 94 Honda accord from one of dad's friend. I paid $800 I've put so much money into it I forgot how much I invested. But I love the car never left me stranded and the check engine light never came on. I plan on keeping it until it dies
It makes all the sense in the world that people who can maintain and repair their own car would go for cheap older "fixer uppers". Thats sorta the perk of any trade... And these days you have to get older pre 2005 cars if you wanna work on them yourself without crazy special tools.
Nice review. Owned a 92 vigor until a taxi wrote it off while parked. 300k plus on it and it drove great. Loved the open greenhouse and reliability. It was a very rare car. New car is the VW GLI. Also rare and the sport high end of the Jetta. Hope you have many years with your vigor.
Have to agree with you Eric about loving that vintage honda/acura. I own a 203k 91 honda accord lx sedan. Put about 70 hours diy( not a proffessional and i take my time) fixup stuff and its the most reliable car ive ever driven. Even put the ex f22a6 parts in to get a little better power. My clearcoat is shot as well. All white and crusty. Adds to the fact that people will see a beater and ill have the satisfaction of a well maintained powertrain, suspension, and brakes.
Geez, I have always loved the Vigor since I'm a Volvo guy so I appreciate the 5-cylinder G series design, but after watching some of your videos, now I can't imagine life without one! Shame I don't have the budget currently, but perhaps someday...
Very nice! We had some five cilinders cars for sale some years ago here in Brazil (by fiat)... It sounds and feels a lot better than four cilinders engines. GOLD SUGGESTION: all ETG1 channel's videos during a ride in one of your cars. =)
You forgot to mention Eric that you are honda guy... A reason to love it coz you hav the advantage that the you know pretty much everything about the brand.
It's nice having a car you can take anywhere & not stress over it. Have a 90's bronco can take it & park it anywhere & walk away not think twice, my Integra I always worry if it's gonna be there when I get back or is going to be damaged/ scratched in some way.
Hey Eric, really digging your videos from both channels. Really looking forward to more on the Fairmont, since I'm a big Ford fan. Especially like the inline sixes, they are bulletproof.
I bought my Vigor last year. It's a 1992 and only had 72k original miles, verified by CarFax. I didn't buy it because I wanted a Vigor but rather I just needed a good POS. Since then I have absolutely fallen in love with it! The car has class and it's something you don't see everyday. The car runs great and just needs some TLC to make it show room quality.
hey eric.. i had a 93 vigor also .. back in 2005 it was my 1st honda\Acura vehicle And i loved it ..then i sold it and purchased a used 2003 honda accord cp.
I have a 1992 Civic VX that I will keep forever. I bought it 3 years ago at 134,xxx an we're now sitting pretty at 206,xxx. I really want to restore it, but rust repair is so expensive and I don't weld. Absolutely love the car though. Completely bulletproof.
SHOPPING CART BUMPER CARS!!!! that's the exact reason I love having a POS. I had an old civic that I used to hit carts with for fun. Had a few spats with some trash cans as well.
I had a 1990 Vigor , loved it, took my father for a spin, and he loved it enough to buy the lux sped model called a inspire. Here in New Zealand we get theses vehicles as second hand japanese imports, so labeled as a Honda Vigor.
I loved my 1992 Acura vigor too...before it stopped working. Years ago when I worked in California, I went to work, and on my lunch, I went to my car and it was gone. Someone stole it. They were able to steal it with a flathead screwdriver. It was recovered , and a couple months later I ended up junking it because it would start but once I got to my destination it wouldn't start up again until it cooled down. Car temp was fine on the dash ( is that thermostat related?) I wish I was more educated or at least financially stable at the time because I liked my vigor. Maybe I'll give it another go.
I know what you mean by OCD. I semi-restored my 1996 Toyota Corolla, a car I love DEARLY, and I've been afraid to drive it to work (food delivery). I literally went out looking for a beater so the Corolla can be garaged safely. I ended up buying an MR2 Spyder, not much of a beater, but I'm over the moon.
Totally agree with driving an old, reliable car. I have a 16 year old Corolla had since new, more impressed with an old daily driver than a new car, they old cars have story's to tell.
I feel the same about my old "93 Accord. 297,000 miles when I finally scrapped it in 2013 b/c of rust (Chicago weather). Great steering and suspension, good power for a four cylinder, good on gas, comfortable to drive, mostly cheap to repair. While especially true about your car b/c of its relative uniqueness, I think there will always be demand for those Japanese cars of the '90's. So much reward for the price. Now, I have a "97 Camry V6. Good car, but not as refined as the Accord, imo.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as the saying goes. Why ask why? I like it because I like it! I'm with you Eric. Hey, I had an 89 Accord with a 5-speed. And yes, at 225K I could still catch a second gear scratch (collective sigh). And it was the original clutch.
I bought a Vigor several years ago. It looked exactly like the one in the video, down to the torn leather seats, and pealing clear coat. I drove the hell out of it for 5 years, until someone rear ended me. I loved that POS, and was really upset when it was totaled. If your looking for another fun ride, find a 96 Honda Prelude. They sit inches from the road, handle corners amazingly, and are fast in the top end.
same reason why i love my vigor :) i have the standard transmission 1994 vigor GS and its amazing. it was passed down from my brother so i got it for free. parts are a little expensive compared to other acuras and hondas of that year so thats probably the only huge downfall of this car. anyways, keep on driving that vigor ETCG! you arent alone.
I'm really loving my 1994 Acura Vigor GS. I bought it in October and it's just so much fun to drive. All the reasons you state for loving yours: I totally agree. Reliable, Enjoyable, POS. The only downside is that replacement parts can get pretty expensive.
I agree on the driveability of the Vigor. Got a '92 with a stick. Not as fun to drive as a rear wheel drive car, but 25 mpg combined with 32-34 mpg on the freeway makes it pretty economical to own and drive. Main relay for fuel pump usually needs replacing every 10 years or so. Not easy to get to in driver kick panel, but not an all day job, either. Valve cover tends to leak into spark plugs wells also. Finally had to replace brake master cylinder after 28 years and 210,000 miles. Gotta agree on the low end torque. Pretty good pull for a 2.5 liter NA motor. Great car for leaving in the employee lot, as the finish isn't perfect and no high-end stereo.
A few Vigor's rolled through my job at a used car lot 13 years ago. I've never been able to get them out of my head. I liked a lot of cars, but I was afraid to buy as I had 3 already, lol. That said, this is one of the few that stuck with me. And those Vigor's didn't stick in the lot. Why? The test drive. I laughed when he said the Vigor was replaced by the TL. I didn't know that. A few years after I had an exciting dream where I drove all night, flying through the streets in a TL. I've never been in one, but if they have anything that the Vigor had, it'd explain the dream. (lots of fast driving!)
Ditto, I agree with your opinion and feelings about these cars (aprox97%) Im an ex-mechanic 25 years in independent shops (20 years german cars) 5 cyls are grrreeaattt!!! first? MBZ then Audi then Honda and Volvo (I believe I read Porsche developed the Volvo engine) My 1984 4000 Quattro was from a junkyard ($1200) had to put front seats and 4 wheels and tires to drive it away (5 cyl. non turbo, 5spd, 3 differentials, 4 doors) It was the safest car (so far)I have driven over Hwy 17 , Los Gatos to Santa Cruz Also driven in the tahoe snow and on Pismo beach (not to mention some 4 wheeling here and there. Vacuum controlled differential locks (center and/or rear)!-- Only ever Needed center locked in deep snow or ice ( : and both locked when I got stuck at Pismo beach (low ground clearance and dry fluffy sand) I once got to test drive a new 1993 Audi S4 5spd when I got a free' test drive ticket' from Audi in the mail (they didnt have the V8 quattro I wanted to drive! ) My list of cars Ive owned is about 33, Married now and driving an old Cal Fire 1993 Yukon 4x4 with my first chevy 350 engine! ( : only drawback is 15-16mpg Hwy Got a ride in a Tesla 2wd and it reminded me of the BMW / MB / Jaguar V12s- low end torque, mid range pull and high rpm HP! ( : Anyway thanks for instructional videos and 'good old runners' info(pos) Marc
Had one for a year or so, It was great and always reliable, I wish I would have kept it but it was difficult to maintain because of hard to find or expensive parts. I can emphasize enough the amazing sound it had and smoothness.
I agree with you eric having a worry free car that you got for super cheap isnt bad at all its acutly fun whens the last time anyone here hit a shoping cart and didnt care in a nice car
I put my 15 year old tatty opel omega on a ferry for 24 hours last week. The boat was busy and the crew were squeezing the cars on. People with new cars were freaking out about damaging them, complaining to the crew. Me? I just shut the door, locked it and strolled off for a beer on the upper deck. Whilst listening to all the expensive cars alarms going off with the ship pitching and draining the batteries. Heard someone i know had their bmw stolen the week before too. I'm just glad i dont have to worry about that stuff when i dont have to - i love my omega.
I feel you Eric. I have the "basic" body style the CB7 4th Gen Accord with the 5 speed and 2.2l injected 4cyl, I always keep my eye out for a 5cyl in good condition, over here in New Zealand we import directly Japanese used cars so get all the interesting variants of Hondas, like the Honda Vigor, Inspire, Saber, Rafaga, Torneo, etc The 5cyl variants are great since they are basically a cross between the basic 4cyl Accord and the 6cyl Legend, an "In-between" size, with a longitudinal motor design, which is great for balance and torque steer, which is the problem with the usual "sideways" front drives... The 2.5 and 2.0 litre 5 cylinders are descended directly from the mighty F series engines like the F22 in my Accord, basically they tacked on a 5th Cylinder, and re-tuned the intake runners... I'd love to swap my accord for a good condition Vigor/Saber/Inspire The main problem for me is that by the early and even more so by the mid 90s most Japanese cars are shipped with Automatic transmission, and I just can't compromise unless it's a special car that only comes with the slush-box from the factory. The Accord I own is a "rare" NZ assembled unit, with the 5-speed and the basic A/C controls, the Japanese-market models usually get either the 2.0l instead of the 2.2l, and usually have automatic A/C controls and the dreaded Auto gearbox, also the paint quality is slightly different between NZ and Japanese assembled.. although both are now finally succumbing to the UV rays and have epic clearcoat peel on most examples. I find it hard to shop for a newer "replacement" car since the build-quality and overall seating position of the Honda is so good, all the newer $5 to $10k cars just seem tacky by comparison with lots of painted plastic parts inside and a raft of early-computer-sensorized features So my car has racked just over 200,000 kms now, and still starts every time with smooth even power delivery and great suspension and steering feel, and I'll just keep driving it and fixing the odd thing until I can find a replacement car that is either better in most ways or makes more sense, which I can't see happening... It's great to own a car that costs more in fuel each year then it does to purchase... I think the Era of cheap-to-buy and cheapish-to-maintain "simple" Japanese early 90s cars is almost over, with most examples already succumbed to RUST or "impossible repairs" or "shiny new replacement" The early 2000s cars are by comparison a bit more risky as most of them need or will soon need VERY expensive repairs to run normally... and the candidates that still do run normally are basically holdover tech from the 90s anyway... Anyway this post is way too long, and if you're still reading my rambling, good on you!
Hi guys, I just got a Acura Vigor GS 1992 model red. It is a peace of art. not rust just few dens on it. The big plus is that is only 62k on it. I got it for $2500.00 Canadian dollars. I have heard that I could do few touch up and put on the car show by next year. It is consider as an antique by reached 25 years mark.
I like the sound of 5 cilinders, i own a Fiat bravo HGT and it also have 5 cilinders and its just awesome. It doesn't have super powers but just that sound makes me smile when i ride :)
Same experience with 1993 Nissan Bluebird ARX (similar to altima) it just refuses to die! Sure its not as quiet as a newer car but these old (japanese built) cars are so solid. The newer cars won't hold up in time due to complexity writing them off.
I believe that Vigors will definitely collector worthy cars years down the road for being that they are very rare and were not produced in great numbers. It's been a minute since I've seen a Vigor.
It sounds like you're describing me and my 89 Chevy K1500, except I won't bash into carts with it. It was a $350 truck that I beat the balls off of and still drive every day. I like it because it's just a little different single cab, step side, 4x4, 305, and a 5 speed. The rust and peeling paint makes people think it's just a beat up farm truck from a far, but it's a great running truck. Oh,and I almost replied "AHHH DON'T CUT THE WIRES" to that video too, but I had the thought of, "even if he sells the car, he's probably leaving the speakers in it"
I have a '99 Accord V6. 161k miles and A/C is colder than ice. Heating is hotter than hell. But, the clear coat peeled off as most Accords from '98 to '00 did... But mechanically I could drive that car from NY to LA and back and all I'd have to do is put gas in. Magic! Oh and it has 16'' 5 spoke rims from the Coupe! None of that 15'' rubbish.
Great video! Reminds me of my old SAAB 900. Sure she wasn't pretty. But that girl was a tank! Did really well in the lake-effect snow belts of western New York :)
Hi Eric,I love your videos and especially how you have an acura vigor now......my question, are familiar with the honda ascot '97 is also a 5cylinder engine
I borrowed a family friends Acura Vigor for Prom (about 20 years ago). It was really dirty and I detailed it really well and they were amazed when I returned it to them. I liked driving it so much a bought one a few years later, had 196k on it and I sold it a couple of years later with 220k on it. Then about 1.5 years later I saw it sitting on the side of the road with a for sale sign on it and (had a jacked up front fender so I knew it was my old one) and it only had 176k on it :) The person had rolled the mileage WAY back. I was a little frustrated they were selling it for about what I sold it for ($2,200)... I just emailed on one on Craigslist for $500.00. Hopefully I can snatch it up!
5 Cylinders are good, I have two Volvos, 850 and S70 both turbocharged. Very reliable, I mean very, many people have gone 500,000km without any major problems (original Turbo and head gasket). Very fast too, I've surprised many people. You can't mistake the 5 cylinder rumble for anything else. My gas mileage on the hwy is over 30mpg, always so all around 5 cylinders are great
I had a 1993 Honda Accord. I bought it because of Honda's legendary reliability. It had a leak in the trunk/tail light assembly that I couldn't solve - ended up smelling like mold on any damp/humid day. It also had a moon roof which could also be why it smelled on humid days. It also had rear control arms so rusted they couldn't do an alignment and it burned through tires every 20,000 miles. I dumped it on a guy on the warmest, driest day I could find to a guy who smelled worse than my car...
LMacNeill Absolutely Right!
Reminds me of my old 1992 acura integra with 220,000 miles, probably the best car i ever had, beat the hell out of it everyday never even came close to quitting, i should have kept it.
I had a 92 Acura Vigor all throughout high school... loved it. It's really fun to drive. it had I think 160,000 miles when we got rid of it.
Dude, me too. LOVED that car!
My reliable POS was a 1988 Accord LXi. Loved that car.
Gotta love that 5 cylinder sound, I want one now.
I've always thought the Vigor was a cool car, I was pretty excited to see that you bought one. I think the fact that it was sort of an oddball car and there's not many left gives it a special charm.
I’ve been waiting for SOMEONE to finally appreciate this gem!!
I just saw one in my work parking lot today. Classic green color. I've never heard of it. Now I want one!
Yup!!! I had a '92 Honda Accord, LOVED that car such a solid car. Whew! I miss it sometimes
Why you get rid of it?
At 3:00, "There is always a trade off in physics." Classic line!
+Aristotle2000 engineering, to be precise.
Owned a 1994 Acura Vigor GS (black/tan leather) for 8 years back in the day. 250k+ miles and such a great drive. Reliable ride.
I love the Acura Legend!!
You scored! Love this car. Unbelievable the torque, especially manual 5 speed.
Ditto, mine is the grey metallic, LS, 5 speed. Spanked a couple mustangs in this car. Yeah we get it.
Charlie Johnson I learned how to drive manual. The torque did had a nice punch from 2 to 3.
I’m buying a 92 vigor 5 speed with 274,000 miles lmao
I just inherited my first reliable POS last month, a 1996 Ford Laser 1.6l DOHC 5spd manual (MAZDA B6 engine was in a bunch of other 'whips' inc Miata but Nth Sth)
Your videos and advice/help assisted me in first changing oil & filter to cutting and polishing heavily oxidised paint to removing and reassembling my front hubs and brakes (after machining.)
A few visits to the wreckers for some stray hoses and dilapidated rubbers.
And then the ticking started.
WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY.
Rocker cover. OFF!
Removed cams cleaned and replaced collapsed HLAS that were needed. Reset cams and replace belts and reset timing. Thumbs up.
Rear boot lock was broken into, wreckers had the whole rear boot panel glass lock & spoiler $10
Worked that out and i've got myself something now.
I had a 92 Vigor when i was in high school. By far the best car I ever owned.
My absolute favorite Acura. The early to mid 90's Acura's were really nice cars. Enjoy Eric!!
Loved this video, basically how I feel about my car. Well done!!
It had 260+ miles on it
I use to love my 92 vigor, great car specially when it's manual transmission
Anger management/shopping carts? lol I always liked your whole presence here because I felt you were one of us. Happily you just proved it.
Eric, you got yourself one HELL of a deal.....Great job!!!!!
7 years later now they’re shooting up in value and desirable.
I am actually thinking about getting one again
(or legend couple 6speed)
those Acuras from 90's were pretty good realible cars.
Good luck finding them. They're getting harder and harder to track down. At least the ones in good shape.
1993 has a warm place in my heart in the car market
These were great cars.. Reliable, well handling, and all the fun stuff works well.. Good choice
Eric gets it.
Reliable POSes and sleepers FTW!
Been looking for something bigger than my 99 Civic Sedan and this definitely piques my interest.
This car sounds amazing, I wish we could get these in australia
As a teen, this was my favorite AC 🔥
SHOPPING CART BUMPER CARS!!!! that's the exact reason I love having a POS. I had an old civic that I used to hit carts with for fun. Had a few spats with some trash cans as well.
I had a 1990 Vigor , loved it, took my father for a spin, and he loved it enough to buy the lux sped model called a inspire.
Here in New Zealand we get theses vehicles as second hand japanese imports, so labeled as a Honda Vigor.
Eric! I hear from a guy I work with at Goodyear in Delhi Ohio that you use to own a shop in Cheviot??? If so, I live in Cheviot! That's awesome!
alex renken Yep. That's where the original ETCG shop was. All of the early videos were shot there.
Use to own this car, what a beautiful piece of machinery...
Car temp was fine on the dash ( is that thermostat related?)
I wish I was more educated or at least financially stable at the time because I liked my vigor.
Go for it, we all like what we like!
Ditto,
I agree with your opinion and feelings about these cars (aprox97%)
Im an ex-mechanic 25 years in independent shops (20 years german cars)
5 cyls are grrreeaattt!!! first? MBZ then Audi then Honda and Volvo
(I believe I read Porsche developed the Volvo engine)
My 1984 4000 Quattro was from a junkyard ($1200) had to put front seats and 4 wheels and tires to drive it away (5 cyl. non turbo, 5spd, 3 differentials, 4 doors)
It was the safest car (so far)I have driven over Hwy 17 , Los Gatos to Santa Cruz
Also driven in the tahoe snow and on Pismo beach (not to mention some 4 wheeling
here and there. Vacuum controlled differential locks (center and/or rear)!--
Only ever Needed center locked in deep snow or ice ( : and both locked when I got stuck at Pismo beach (low ground clearance and dry fluffy sand)
I once got to test drive a new 1993 Audi S4 5spd when I got a free' test drive ticket' from Audi in the mail (they didnt have the V8 quattro I wanted to drive! )
My list of cars Ive owned is about 33, Married now and driving an old Cal Fire 1993 Yukon 4x4 with my first chevy 350 engine! ( : only drawback is 15-16mpg Hwy
Got a ride in a Tesla 2wd and it reminded me of the BMW / MB / Jaguar V12s-
low end torque, mid range pull and high rpm HP! ( :
Anyway thanks for instructional videos and 'good old runners' info(pos)
Marc
I’m thinking about buying one, my dad own a 92 and I was in love with that car even tho he only had it for a month
Great cars but be warned. Parts are getting very scarce and very few mechanics know how to service these cars properly. Good luck.
I have the "basic" body style the CB7 4th Gen Accord with the 5 speed and 2.2l injected 4cyl, I always keep my eye out for a 5cyl in good condition, over here in New Zealand we import directly Japanese used cars so get all the interesting variants of Hondas, like the Honda Vigor, Inspire, Saber, Rafaga, Torneo, etc
The 5cyl variants are great since they are basically a cross between the basic 4cyl Accord and the 6cyl Legend, an "In-between" size, with a longitudinal motor design, which is great for balance and torque steer, which is the problem with the usual "sideways" front drives...
The 2.5 and 2.0 litre 5 cylinders are descended directly from the mighty F series engines like the F22 in my Accord, basically they tacked on a 5th Cylinder, and re-tuned the intake runners... I'd love to swap my accord for a good condition Vigor/Saber/Inspire
The main problem for me is that by the early and even more so by the mid 90s most Japanese cars are shipped with Automatic transmission, and I just can't compromise unless it's a special car that only comes with the slush-box from the factory.
I find it hard to shop for a newer "replacement" car since the build-quality and overall seating position of the Honda is so good, all the newer $5 to $10k cars just seem tacky by comparison with lots of painted plastic parts inside and a raft of early-computer-sensorized features
So my car has racked just over 200,000 kms now, and still starts every time with smooth even power delivery and great suspension and steering feel, and I'll just keep driving it and fixing the odd thing until I can find a replacement car that is either better in most ways or makes more sense, which I can't see happening...
It's great to own a car that costs more in fuel each year then it does to purchase...
I think the Era of cheap-to-buy and cheapish-to-maintain "simple" Japanese early 90s cars is almost over, with most examples already succumbed to RUST or "impossible repairs" or "shiny new replacement"
The early 2000s cars are by comparison a bit more risky as most of them need or will soon need VERY expensive repairs to run normally... and the candidates that still do run normally are basically holdover tech from the 90s anyway...
I have always loved those older Acuras/Hondas. The Legend coupe is still beautiful!
Agreed.
I believe that Vigors will definitely collector worthy cars years down the road for being that they are very rare and were not produced in great numbers. It's been a minute since I've seen a Vigor.
Just ordered my new liscene plate "V1G0R"
Nice!
"I'll bash into shopping carts." ahahahaha! Love it!
I was always curious about the 5 cylinder engine.
That part of the video was very interesting for me.
Inline engines always seem to be tougher.
Did really well in the lake-effect snow belts of western New York :)
reminds me of my 94 volvo 850 that i have grown to love and yes it has a 5 cylinder
My 1992 Vigor was the best, most responsive car. Fun to drive. Drove it from 96 to 99.
Have a 92 Acura Vigor. (White) Getting ready to sell. Don’t know if I can part with her. Very reliable, gets me to to work every day.
