My cousin wrote this song and Gene, (my big brother) took my two sisters to Nashville to sing harmony with him. My older sister, Mary Lois Watson Templeton, has gone to heaven now but this was a dream of hers. My brother got to sing gospel with my oldest sister and when you listen to this you will hear the family harmony. A God given talent!
Wonderful comment....it must have been a true privilege to have Gene as your brother. I too have a wonderful brother and consider myself very lucky. At 80 yrs old I've heard 'em all, good and bad. If it's country or R&R I know my music. Price, Twitty, Loretta, Arnold, William's (both) and even the days of Acuff, Carters and Monroe. We have had some male vocalists that were/are great. From his very first recorded song till now, NONE can touch him. Purist voice, emotion, range, pitch. He's always had it and one of the most humble entertainers I've ever met. He's been in MY Hall of Fame for years

My favorite country singer. Gene Watson is a true gentleman with a pure voice that evokes emotions from the heart and interprets a song like no one else. He gets better every year. It is too bad that Mr. Watson has never gotten the recognition he deserves.

The absolutely most talented country singer ever, I had the honor to meet him when he first arrived in Nashville. He is truly a terrific singer and very nice gentleman. He deserves to be in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

I agree with Leroy Norwood..and Brendan Theodore. Gene Watson's voice gets better all the time. I am almost 80 years old and I have heard many country singers in my time but none can compare with Gene. I met him at the Opry last year and I told him how much I appreciated him and his singing. He looked at me with a surprised look on his face and thanked me. Such a nice, kind man.

I always like listening to the live versions of the classic country tunes as I find that they are often much better than the recorded versions. This is no exception. Mr. Watson has an incredible country voice and you can feel the love and passion for the music the band is putting in. And having the steel and fiddle right out front is fine by me as well!

In response to Leroy.... I fully agree! This man may have someone else write the songs he sings, but he is the one who makes those songs touch your heart. His style.... his timing..... his inflection..... his range.... his breath control..... all add up to make him one of the very best that country music has ever seen. I have heard people speak of the voice being an instrument,""like a fine violin"..... That reminds me of the song about the old man who came forward during an auction and taking the old violin, played it masterfully. He gave the violin new value.... new worth.... new meaning to the people who heard him play that old "instrument". That is what Gene Watson does with a song..... And nobody does it better...

My Mother wrote "climb Higher" and 5 more of Gene's gospel songs. She climbed higher 2002. I miss you and wish you could see your song being sung on TBN. Gene sings it just like she wrote it. They are 1st Cousins. His Mother, Thelma and my Grandmother ,Kathryn are sisters.

Faye McNamara Gene is an easy going southern gentleman. The first time I met him he answered all my questions. I can not understand why some of his songs never charted at #1 especially "Couldn't Love Have Found A Better Place To Die". Gene said he loved that song and didn't know why the song never charted very high.

I have followed this gentle man from his days in Houston when he was a paint and body man at a local car dealership there! He has only gotten better with time! If you have the opportunity to see him in person,you really will enjoy his show! I've had that pleasure myself! Love this man!

People say he puts them to sleep....not because they are bored,it's because he has such a beautiful soothing voice!!! I listen a lot to his music 24/7 sometimes!!!
I think that it's unanimous. We're all agreed that the best thing Gene Watson ever did was to stop straightenin' out fenders and poppin' out dents 'n dings and started into vocalizin'.
Being one who followed Gene from his beginnings I think that he personifies the confidence that comes with age, exposure experience and that often ignored factor of developing YOUR own niche of an audience that you can grow like any successful gardener. It always starts with those hard-nosed devotees who will go to a club date and travel a few hundred miles to a concert date just to see and hear you. From there, having been properly fertilized, it spreads on to the vastness of a TV audience such as these fine CFR performances are indicative of.
The common thread running through all this is that great performers never sell out their integrity. They keep on doing that which they know and believe in as THEIR way...their style and eventually, if the talent is there it will not be denied. This perennial, all-seasons bloomer Gene Watson has paid his dues, made that trip and here we see him in a 'venue of his peers'. That isn't to be minimized, because that respect and even adoration we see is genuine. As T. Graham Brown indicates with his gesturing - Gene has that indefinable magic touch now and that means one thing.. It's coastin' time for Gene, so he ain't about to change one little thing in HIS PURSUIT of good music. Go get 'em Gene!
Wow! Back about 1981 or 82 Gene played the Gallup Indian Ceremonial. I was assigned security through the Sheriffs Department. My family got to go to his concert and my daughter Alicia got to go up on the bus with him and see how they traveled. I got to sit in with him and ended up playing a little music with the band. What a kick. Gene was a gracious person and treated us all very kindly. Thanks for posting his music.

I saw Gene earlier this month in Branson Mo. I have been to lots of concerts but Gene's blew me away. This man is 70. His voice is better than it has ever been. After the concert, he did an over 1hr. autograph session. I am so glad I got to see him in person.

As we move along this road that is called life, sometimes the road gets bumpy. I started listening to Gene singing "Climb Higher" and I got such a blessing from it. Gene sings every song from his heart and I just love the guy. I'm a Christian and as I listened to the song, all we have to do is reach higher when we pray and God will help us.
