Ronnie Pickering!!! That's who he is..
    1982 I was 10 and supported Chiefs.
The only reason that they played this at Ellis park was because the stadium was bankrupt and needed income.
I also watched the Windies play at Wanderers....

As a white male born in SA, who at the time never ever gave a fuck about the politics of the day, I admit apartheid was wrong. The West Indies Rebel Cricket team was the best team I ever saw in even today's cricket scene. The W/I Rebel Cricket side was the reason for my passion for cricket. Something that will forever stick in my mind was when the NZ Maori rugby side wanted to tour SA and pLay against various provincial sides and tests vs the Boks. The Maori side never left NZ. Why? The South African Rugby President, a Coloured gentleman by the name of Oregan Hoskins, refused this planned tour because as he rightly stated the NZ Maori side was picked on the basis of race. Well done Mr Oregan. During the mid-2002-2016, there was racial discrimination in SA sport due to the black government applying the Quota system which by the way destroyed many black talented players. From 2018 to 2020 things are great as now SA is showing the world how good they are in various sports. RWC 2019 best ever won by an International Team called the Springboks won the title but not only the title also broke all records re RWC finals. Needless to mention these. On a different note, the international community did what they had to do to stop apartheid and yes rightly so, was evil but tell me what the fuck about the Israelis killing innocent little kids on the streets of Palestine? Why doesn't the BBC do a documentary about Palestine and the oppression they experience which makes SA's apartheid look like chicken shit.

In 2020 it is time again to boycott South Africa when land apropriation WITHOUT compensation is in full effect just like in 1983. This includes the deportation of Oscar Pistolwhip the athlete criminal who beat and killed his girlfriend with a gun.

@@janoos24 We will not going to have land appropriation in SA. No matter what happened in the past, we better swallow and charge ahead. The experiences in Zimbabwe speak volume. Now they are starting to reintroduce the skilled farmers back in agriculture. Actually, any forced purchase has to come with compensation. But I will say, it should never happen. Farming happens in large scale today. Dividing lands into small lots so every one can grab a lot doesn't work. Let the skilled farmers farm the land and produce the food. I don't care about their color.

The South African country then seemed functional, although economically (and morally) its system was already unsustainable.
Well, historical context aside... apparently this doc were shown on a channel for the Afrikaans and English community (although there are native speakers in 2 ads in this section), just as there were other channels where they advertised for speakers of other native languages.

A country that deports the majority of its' native population to live in barren deserted steppes with no infrastructure whatsoever is not functional. That's like calling North Korea functional based on the amenities in Pyongyang city alone.

(5:35) The SA Olympic chief doesn't get it. He thought the sport boycott was because the world wanted to SA to change politically. Not at all. The boycott was because you denied qualified athletes the chance to compete only because of their race. That's the problem.🔔 Soviet and commie countries were participating and they had political regimes on bar, if not way worse than old SA. The sport issue was as I stated, the categorical exclusion of athletes based on their race/color.

I cannot agree with your opinion. Ron Pickering was one of the greatest grass roots sport ambassadors.
If you study this programme he has no fear or favour which was always his trademark. Also it is plain common sense. If he had gone in all guns blazing the Afrikaners would have clammed up.
Rather than shouting with a placard outside the SA Embassy Pickering made this 40 years ago & it is still relevant today. In my opinion Ron did far more for breaking down barriers of sport in South Africa by shining a light on the uneasy situation back in 1983. Sadly Pickering died at 60 in 1991-far too young.
PS As regards the so called D'Olivera affair we now know it was one of the Bedser twins Alec & Eric-Surrey & England as well as The MCC Committee) who shafted Basil's inclusion!
