As a young woman, Doreen McNeill was a technical draughtswomen, drawing navigational charts for aircraft. The work was meticulous and intricate. In the early 1960’s she began painting while living in the Bahamas. Since moving to New Zealand in 1987, Doreen has perfected her contemporary abstract techniques.
Doreen uses abstractions, grids and directions which are derived from her many years of hand drawing navigational charts for aircraft - before computers were in common use and aircraft were guided only by radio signals shown on distorted roller charts in the cockpit.
While not based on any particular geographical area, the underlying inspiration for Doreen’s art work comes from the basic elements representing nature. Doreen paints in acrylics and builds up layers of exquisite colour to give the painting depth and a vibrant sense of texture.
Doreen does not wish to ‘finish’ her paintings and considers art as a process that is begun by the artist and if successful, starts to live a life of it’s own. In her creative process she works on a painting until a time when she sees the painting as ‘something living’ - when the art begins to work for itself.
Now in her eighties, Doreen continues to paint with passion and gusto and is still exhibiting her work in galleries throughout New Zealand. In 2014, Doreen was a finalist in the Molly Morpeth Art Awards and was a winner at the Miles Art Awards - Friends of the Gallery Award.
Doreen McNeill has exhibited her work widely throughout New Zealand and overseas including Taiwan where she exhibited with Philip Trusttum and Phillippa Blair. Her work is in the permanent collections of the ASB Baypark Arena, Tauranga Hospital, and the Tauranga Art Gallery, where she had a public retrospective exhibition in 2010.

The Colour In Your Life TV series is an art show that takes you into the everyday studios of artists from around the world. While in the studio they share their individual techniques with the viewer in a relaxed atmosphere with a delightfully Australian host and fellow artist Graeme Stevenson. The series is currently filmed in Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

Doreen, you are absolutely amazing. I am myself a self taught artist who for many years could not take the time to paint so that I could raise my family. Now that the kids are grown I am back to painting. I came back doing abstract art, something I have never done before. I found it to be quite more challenging than I had anticipated. Watching you here has really opened my eyes to what abstract really is about. You take it as it comes and you work with what you have. Thank you for the doing this video and thank you Graeme as well

As a retired art teacher/lecturer who taught in all mediums without exception. One thing I have noticed in all abstract painter and that includes myself, all artists have this gift within them even if they have not experimented with it. We can all thank one man who was probably the very first abstract painter and that is the great British artist Turner, go look at his wonderful work and you will see instantly how we have all benefited from this great man, he was well before all the impressionists and expressionists, yes you do have the equally wonderful Rembrandt, but for the abstract its Turner.
I forgot to say that Doreen’s work that is splendid, I can see the same wonderful colours, movement and passion of Turner in her work which is good in a way because this is possibly how Turner worked. I🎉 am an english woman who lives in the uk and spent 20 years working in one of the most famous art galleries in the world and would often spend time looking at Turners work, often sitting just sketching the movements in his work. One can learn a great deal from studying the work of a great artists, but ultimately developing your own style.
Oh this is a hoot, well pleased I was right in surmising that I recognised some influence of Turner, I had not watched this video I had seen another video of Doreen’s work that was where I realised the connection to Turner, had just started watching this video and there it was, the chap in the video asked Doreen who had influenced her in her work, starting with ..’ I know that Turner was an influence so who else was?
