  • @Liberty4Ever
    @Liberty4Ever 8 років тому +542

    9:50 Sorry to be a Negative Nancy, but that's an AWFUL way to make a solder splice. Most people use too much solder but that's not enough. The wires should be twisted to make a good mechanical connection before making the soldered electrical connection. This weakly overlapping attempt at a butt splice with not enough solder will fail if you look at it cross eyed. Don't even think of exposing it to any flexing or vibration. And that nasty brown flux paste? What is this? 1950s plumbing?

    • @SuperAWaC
      @SuperAWaC 8 років тому +35

      sorry to be pedantic, but she was following the nasa standard for soldered lap splices. see NASA-STD-8739.4A, 19.4. provided you do it right, it's mechanically fine
      i do agree on the not enough solder and unnecessary application of flux, though.

    • @Liberty4Ever
      @Liberty4Ever 8 років тому +75

      I found it. Nothing so fun as reading a 100+ page government specification. :-)
      standards.nasa.gov/file/817/download?token=LsVA-v2x
      She's performing the lap splice shown on page 68. I was referring to the lineman's splice on page 71.
      She DID NOT follow the NASA spec which clearly calls for both conductors to be tinned before making the final solder joint. That nasty brown flux is not tinning.
      I wouldn't want to fly in any spacecraft with a splice like that. I had an experimental aircraft and I used crimped connections to avoid the stress risers of soldered connections on stranded wire in a high vibration environment. Heat shrink can only so so much.

    • @SuicideNeil
      @SuicideNeil 8 років тому +48

      Glad I'm not the only one who probably winced seeing such an awful attempt at a solder joint. Having seen the 'art' of Tom Sachs recently in one of the Tested channels videos ( Adam Savage did a tour of his Space Program exhibit ), I'm not surprised that Sachs insists on such old fashioned and crude styles of work, it seems to be his 'style', rather than what is 'proper' or electrically and mechanically sound.

    • @Sethgolas
      @Sethgolas 8 років тому +12

      You'd want to use a pretty good amount of solder even then, I don't know an engineer who would spec that into a design. I'll certainly use lap splices for temporary lab setups, but I can't think of any reason do put that in a production part.

    "In 2023, Sachs came under fire from past studio employees for creating a cult-like and fear-inducing work environment.[15] Past workers told Hyperallergic about how difficult it was to quit. “It is like a true cult in that they make it really hard to leave,” they said, citing “manipulation and threats.”[16] One former studio manager told Curbed, “It’s almost as if he goes out of his way to sow discomfort and pawns it off as if he’s a genius. It’s like a ruse. So many people out there know that he’s cruel, but the art world is tiny and no one gives a shit.”"

    A proper solder joint for wires is mechanically sound before applying solder i.e. twist them together.
    She did not use sufficient amount of solder as all solder joints should have a shiny reflective surface with no crystallization or dullness i.e. the solder joint was not too hot too cold or was moved before it cooled.
    The code fails basic soldering for wires.
    The persistence quote is from Calvin Coolidge.

    I think Ave pranked us all. My eyes are twitching I'm so triggered by this;-) A great example of the kind of person you never want to work for. Someone who's utterly concerned with trivialities of HOW things are done instead of the reasons you're actually in business. Someone who can't see past their own way of negotiating the world, imposing their own way of doing things on their staff. I can assure you, being told what to do and how to do it are two different things. HR nonsense aside, I'd last 10 mins working for someone this short sighted. The end result is the goal. As I've said on here, I think I'd last a while until I got caught in some technicality. Source: I lived for a while on a "prepper compound" and I was the best thing to ever happen to that place. I repaired things, kept the neighbors hating the place a lot less while I was there, took care of animals, garden, etc. I was The Responsible One.
      I did it for, essentially, room (I had my own trailer which I also fixed a lot of stuff on) and basic board although I bought a lot of my own food. A valued employee, right? Someone the owner of the place would want to keep around, right? Nope!
      The owner is a narcissist who thrives on drama. I'd improved the place enough that he started inviting others to live there, who were essentially a bunch of deadbeats and this only increased my workload. Then I started getting nagged over stupid trivalities until I eventually left.
      I think the problem was, I was making things work too well. And the owner didn't want things to work too well, he wanted drama. Well he got it. After I left some of the neighbors called me to verify that I was gone and not coming back, then complained to the county about him and he's being billed $100/day for running an "illegal hotel". One of the guys living there hung himself. Another guy violated his parole and had to go to jail for a while. It's just drama, drama, drama all day long.
      So you can work for someone like this and be a great worker and team player and still end up the villain.
