For clarity, as an older millennial, I can confirm that the shit Clown is saying about bands now were 100% said about Slipknot. I was there and read/heard them lol the lack of self-awareness is astounding. His era was among the most reviled by the music elitists and gatekeepers.

@@Clintob The only ground Slipknot broke was taking a sound that had long existed before them and having mainstream commercial success with their brand of it. Anyone who thinks they were musically groundbreaking is basically saying they didn't listen to a lot of underground metal and nu metal at the time.
Likewise there are amazing newer bands today. The metal scene is fresher and more fun and more diverse than any point in the last 20-30 years. And if you don't agree...well you're just basically saying you don't listen to a lot of metal today either.

The comment about it being easier to get into the music industry and that being a problem is literally just the whole "they didn't have to work as hard as I did, so it's not as good" argument. Older people love to do this.

The one thing I will say is that the modern era of music is way more decentralized. Meaning there are more opportunities for bands to tour by themselves without a label via go fund me, crowd funding, etc. Which is good. Maybe not as much to make as much money as the few bands being pushed back in the day as compared to the abundance of what we have now.

    • @michaeltunnicliffe4935

Download used to take chances. I did a bit of digging and didn't realise that the first two times Linkin Park headlined, they had only been a band for 5 and 8 years respectively. SOAD were fairly young too, as were MCR. And Prodigy was a somewhat bold move. It was really between 2013 and 2022 that they stopped taking risks. And I'd say that was when they did the most damage by letting very few new bands take a shot at the headline slots. Now they are being forced to take chances again because the old bands are retiring and they didn't guide bands like Alterbridge, BFMV and Parkway Drive to headline status. So I welcome them going back to risks with BMTH and Sleep Token. Unfortunately, they just can't counter that with big names because most of the big names are retired or cost too much. And again they left out an entire generation of bands who had potential but are now not seen as big or popular enough whilst also being seen as passed it and washed up. Download should have always had a minimum of 1 legacy band for value for money, and at least 1 first time headliner to keep the festival fresh each year. Korn should have been headlining 10 years ago and bands like Limp Bizkit, Deftones and BFMV should have started headlining around 5 years ago. And today, they need to start taking chances on bands like Ghost, Baby Metal and Architects.

@seanmakessound I personally didn't take what he said that way. I think more what he was trying to say was anyone with pro tools and a laptop can artificially make a hit song without any real musical talent but can't do that consistently because their "talent" and creativity are assisted. And the people that do that successfully go on to have a (usually) short lived career but take that spot and attention away from someone who may be more deserving of making a living in the music world.

what nobody is wording correctly is the fact that there’s no effort being put into music anymore. A group of people sucking at their instruments in a room together for years until theyre good and have a band is so completely different to maybe one or two people playing instruments and then using loops and samples to write the rest and then just passing it onto some random player to learn. It takes the feeling away. People can say they are just casual fans and dont care but at the end of the day the human brain can pick something that has feeling into it apart from something artificial for monetary gain. Thats the problem. The feeling and emotional connection is starting to become less and less prevalent

To the Computer stuff: It increases the quanity of "bad" music, but it also gives the opportunity to great composers who otherwise wouldn't be able to do music. And if the "bad" music is more successfull than the good music, then it might not be as "bad" since more people prefer the "bad" stuff over the good.

Agreed completely. I'm not against using computers (I'm a huge nerd, so I'm actually all for it) and they allow so many people who otherwise wouldn't have the means, space, time, or money to make music and share it with the world. And with that, there IS going to be a greater noise to signal ratio when it comes to finding great, new music and artists. The industry was more self-selecting than it is now, and there's good and bad that comes with that change. And at the end of the day, that's really all it is: change.

Whose gonna headline when Iron Maiden, Metallica, Green Day, etc call it quits? We have to give new acts chances so that in 20 years festivals are still fun and worth going to

I really don't get the need in some people to constantly talking about "better past" or "real" music/musicians without computers. Seriously? Then are you a real driver when you're not repearing a car yourself? Come on. For me it looks a bit like some people can't get away from the feeling they're getting older and it makes them angry that there always will be younger bands ready to take over their place in the music scene.

I completely disagree with him. Imo music being more accessible because of the new technology and the internet should lead to more good bands too. Because logically if you gave everyone a fair start with the same resources, the bands that actually created better music should get more traction than the others. The fact that you had to make a great effort to get your music out there back in your time, because the internet wasn't as big of a factor, doesn't relate to the quality of the music you produce. To me it sounds like he is bitter that it was harder for him than it's now for the new bands in therms of marketing and raising to fame.

Also. Let me just say.... being successful now requires just as much work, if not more. Back in the day as an indie artist you could record 1 album and push that 1 album for multiple years. Nowadays, if youre not continuing to put out content you lose momentum. Your expected to post *all the time* and engage with fans and make new content sooo frequently to get noticed online and stay relevant. Which is why you see bands doing so many singles and eps rather than just dropping an album.

Think about how the invention of the cassette tape and the cassette recorder made it so musicians could cheaply record and reference their riffs, melodies, and even lyrics on the fly so they could mold them later. That fundamentally changed how musicians made music because it was instant-recall of something they did on the fly. I think that's a much bigger evolution of writing than using midi drums or whatever.

Now I'm in my 50s, have been attending gigs for almost 40 years, been to almost 50 festivals and I look forward most to finding new bands, seeing them in small venues. If nothing else, it's far better value for money than today's gig prices.

Some will spend their days at mainstage and discover a few more bands they like, and some others will explore the festival and get into a bunch of other bands, broaden their horizons and end up getting into some of the bands I really love. Being able to throw a song on the internet isn’t being in the industry.
I’d argue it’s harder now to “be in the industry” because there’s significantly fewer places to play and everyone is trying to hit the same algorithms to get noticed by a label.
If he thinks putting a song online is being in the industry, then the mass amount of bars willing to have live music 30 years ago would have meant thousands of people were in the industry who “never made it.”

I was having this exact same conversation with my dad just yesterday. I have a lot of little things to say here and there about the whole situation, but here’s the main thing I guess: I wasn’t alive in the 80s or 90s, but if I had to guess, I would imagine the percentage of “bad music” is higher now because of how accessible the ability to create music is. However, the sheer amount of music that exists is so overwhelmingly greater now that there is literally a band for whatever kind of music you could possibly think of liking. It’s also wildly unfair to say that it’s easier to make music nowadays just because it’s more accessible. The accessibility only makes music more available to people, it doesn’t make that music better. It’s true that I don’t need three other people to make a song nowadays, but in this scenario, I would still need to know how to play those three other instruments, or at least understand how to get a desired sound out of a DAW. For every single difference that makes modern music “easier” (and there are a lot of those) there is another roadblock to conquer. It was honestly really upsetting to see Clown say those things but I love the way you addressed it and I’m glad you did.

I’m rapidly approaching 70 and don’t find a shortage of good newer music. Some years are better than others but 2024 has been good-if you look at the top 10 album lists people post there are a lot of different ones from different people and a lot of good choices. And every new band I can remember going back to the 60s has had a lot of haters and people saying music is no good anymore.

I love your album wall, just noticed you have an Evergrey record. Love them.
