I heavily disagree. For years he would demand to play in midfield or on the wing for Austria and it was painful to watch. I mean, sure, it's impressive that he can play these positions on a professional level, but it's not a very high professional level, at least not compared to his quality as CB/LB. I've come to the conclusion that Alfie feels literal hatred and rage when he sees Federico Valverde. You never include him on these videos but the guy is an absolute beast everywhere AND he's a clutch player. I'd place him probably 4th or 5th in this top
Kinda surprised Milner didn’t make the list. I guess his size would hurt at CB but he’s completely proficient in all midfield positions as well as both fullback roles. I’d also say he’d be decent as a forward too
Pretty surprised that Milner isn't in the list. He has actually played in every position. But if I had to choose a player from Liverpool, I'd choose Firmino. He is probably the attacker in world football that has the best defensive attributes. He has decent physicality and is technically excellent. If teams actually manage to get the ball off him, they won't have it for long.
Reece James was the first name I thought of. Having watched him at my club, Wigan, he can play in so many positions, he certainly did for us. He excels everywhere
should have included Ashley Young, he literally played all ten positions and he is still playing on pro level. winger on both sides? check full back on both sides? check central midfielder? check central attacker? check central defender? check
Gonzalo Castro has to be here. He has played every single position except center back, but since he played a lot of his games as right back, he surely can play that too.
I haven’t even finished watching the video and I can say that Reece James could outplay any player in this list. Full back, right wing, center mid, number 9. He can do it all.
What are you smoking, he doesn’t have the calmness and control to operate in midfield. He beats players with power and that’s why he is suited out wide and a good defender but he looks average in midfield. Saw him in a few games for Chelsea last season. World class at defending and stacking out wide but average at best playing midfield.
A player that immediately popped into my mind was a prime Miguel Layun. At his time at Porto, he played at almost every position in outfield. A LB, his skill and amazing crossing ability enable him to play at all the positions in both wings. Because of his solid defending, he could also play as CB. His intelligence and ability to read the game make him a good defensive and central MF and his skill would also help him at offensive tasks in the midfield or even as a second striker. As a CF, he could bag some goals, but he's more of a playmaker than a goalscorer. The fact that he's also a great professional and someone who really loves the game just add up. One of my favorite players to have ever worn a Porto shirt
We need to see Ederson in Central Midfield at some point. Idk if as a keeper he has the legs to do it for 90 minutes but from a technical aspect I don't doubt it for a second.
Think Declan Rice is a good shout. Proven as an excellent centre- back and DM, drives the ball forward well enough to do a job at full back or elsewhere in the midfield, can beat people as well. Would lack goals though. Tbh, at 6 foot and athletic think he'd be ok in net too.
Scott McTominay would be solid, big enough to play CB, good enough passer to play in the mids and good enough finishing to play up top, might be a bit slow to be a winger but would be fine as a wide midfielder
McTominay should be playing in the SPL for a side like Hearts or Motherwell. Terrible passer of the ball, rubbish first touch and no vision. He's got the technical ability of Darren Ferguson.
This somehow reminded me of Paddy McNair. Wasn’t he utilised as a CM and a striker for NI during Euro 2016? And obviously, he was used as a CB at Man Utd.
A really good list! The only thing I would do is putting Kimmich one or two ranks higher, but other than that I don't see what I would have done differently. I am interested, if you would have taken Kevin Großkreutz into your list, if he still was an active player. He literally played (almost) every position for BVB under Jürgen Klopp, was best goal scorer in the 2. Bundesliga before Dortmund bought him and he was even part of the 2041 German national team that became world champion. He was almost substituted in the final match against Argentina.
I'm surprised you didn't include Bernardo Silva. His lack of physicality might be an issue but he's one of the few footballers on the planet who can do pretty much anything you ask of him, on and off the ball and has no obvious weaknesses. He's also surprisingly scrappy for someone that isn't physically dominant. On another note, when I started listing off players it was crazy how many of them were from Man City or Bayern Munich drilling home the effect of Guardiola's influence. It just reinforces the fact that formations and traditional positions of players don't really exist in a Pep team. Whilst players all have their attributes, Joao Cancelo is expected to do what Kevin De Bruyne can and vice versa.
Alfie please please tell me you just forgot about Marcos Llorente and you didn’t actually consider him and put any of these players ahead of him. I was so certain I’d see him in top spot and was shocked to not find him. Tell me really that a team of solely Marcos Llorente wouldn’t beat every one of these guys. Please tell me you forgot him. Please Alfie.
Day 5: Best XI with only trophy-less players. (Similar idea to "7 best players without trophies" but that was outdated and a XI would definitely be more intriguing.)
Not to forget: Neuer, is an excellent player outside of the goal, can also play outside of goal. Also Süle, this guy went from offensive midfield to CB in his career.
It’s a different gravy playing and having to look over your shoulder, and Sule is absolute shi*t. Man is as slow and immobile as Lord McGuire. That’s why Bayern allowed him to go
Walker, TAA, Cancelo, Kimmich, Hakimi and those are just the ones i got off the top of my head Hes really really good but saying hes the best rb in the world is like saying bruno fernandes is the best cam in the world
Lothar Matthaus, Patrick Viera, Roy Keane, Claude Makalele, Gennaro Gattuso, Didier Deschamps, Graeme Souness, Dunga, Frank Rijkaard, Alex Song, Paul Scholes, Garrincha, Edgar Davids, Marcelo, Phillip Lahm, Arturo Vidal, and last but not least Charlie Adam.
I really like cancelo, but i would bet that goretzka, alaba and even kimich are more complete. I fell a PL bias here Alfie, and I’m sure you think the same 😜
Marcos Llorente started his career as a defensive midfielder, was converted to a center forward following the Liverpool game where he scored twice, won La Liga playing as a hybrid right winger / attacking midfielder, played this season at wing back due to injuries and played fullback for Spain at the EUROs. Ridiculously athletic player, his speed and strength alone make him a great 1v1 defender and he has the stamina to run for 90 minutes all season. As versatile as they come, he'd probably make a good centre back as well, and more than anyone on this list he's also proven to be an attacking threat, even if he is not as technically gifted as most of them. He got 25 goal contributions from midfield when Atlético won the title. I have no clue how you did not include him when his teammates Saúl and Wass at least feature in the honourable mentions section haha, in my opinion he'd easily top this list.
Look at this: Deyovaisio Zeefuik from Hertha BSC He was bought from Groningen in 2020 as a promising talent on the right back positon. He played many games in his first 1 1/2 years at hertha, almost all as right back or right mid. He also played one game as a left mid and got subbed on as a right wing sometimes. But at the end he couldn’t make it in the starting 11 anymore so he got loaned out to Blackburn where he not only played as right back and right mid but also at left mid and as a striker. Now back at hertha with jonjoe Kenny arriving at the RB position he was a candidate to be sold. Now in the friendly games the new coach at hertha played zeefuik as central mid and a center mid and never ever in the last 2 years I’ve seen zeefuik performing this well. But this isn’t even all. Just today in a friendly match he played 90 minutes as a center back. This man has played every possible position except for left wing, left back and offensive mid in the last 12 months
I think new Spurs signing Ivan Perišić deserved to be on the list. Thru his career he played as winger both right and left, wing-back on both side, central midfield and striker. Basically for Inter he played everything except centre-back, which he would do just fine being 6’2’’ and good in the air.
Frenkie de jong could be on this list over Mcginn. He has played centerback for Barca a couple of times and he has also played quite far up field and scored some goals
I would argue that he has not featured enough on the flanks or been energetic enough to be considered an all-rounder like the listed players, though there is no doubt of his intelligence and ball mastery. Great pick btw.
The best multifunctional player on the entire history of football has to be Phillipe Cocu. He was central defender and striker for teams like Barcelona and psv when both teams were on top of European football. Am absolute legend.
That’s a good shout, he was a quality and versatile player. For me, Ruud Gullit is the best example, he was outstanding in every position. I’m wondering from your name if you are Dutch? There’s a few other examples I can think of from the Michels era, Krol and Neeskens. And my dad’s favourite Van Hanegem. My own favourite defensive player is Rijkaard - outstanding - but I’m not sure how he would do as striker.
@@Shades-of-76 yes, I am Dutch, well spotted. And yes,Gullet was a master as well, though he didn't drop back to defense until he really was too old to compete up front IMO. I’d give a shout to Alessandro Florenzi, he’s played almost everywhere on the pitch apart from poacher, he has the pace and stamina to do a job in every position and he can strike a ball incredibly well
I feel like Emerson may have been overlooked, his tackling and passing are some of the best around, and apparently used to play in midfield as a youngster, rumour is he's good at FKs/Pens too. Perhaps doesn't have the speed as some, but that's an unknown really as GKs don't tend to need to train for that. Plus, he could play in Goal too, y'know. His actual position.
Although he might not be one of the best players right now, Sergi Roberto has literarily played in every single outfield position throughout his career. Started in midfield, then moved to right back and was even crucial in the Clásico as a right winger with an assist on Luis Suárez. He should have been in this list.

No one would fit this description more than nainggolan my guy was a so good at Roma it was crazy to see him just about everywhere on the pitch
marcos llorente and valverde def should’ve got in
Kinda surprised Milner didn’t make the list. I guess his size would hurt at CB but he’s completely proficient in all midfield positions as well as both fullback roles. I’d also say he’d be decent as a forward too
He's like 36, which is why he only got an honourable mention.
@@shubhamsinghstar123 and at 36 he’s better conditioned than just about anyone in the premier league. He’s won Liverpool’s lactate test every year
Pretty surprised that Milner isn't in the list. He has actually played in every position.
But if I had to choose a player from Liverpool, I'd choose Firmino. He is probably the attacker in world football that has the best defensive attributes. He has decent physicality and is technically excellent. If teams actually manage to get the ball off him, they won't have it for long.
I think it might be because milly is to obvious a shout that he’s not included but then he put kimmich in so 🤷♂️
What Milner is not in this list he is the what this list is suppose to be about I know when the guy was a winger at newcastle he is so versatile.
Never played striker tho , in his youth he was a talented winger
@@petesmart1983 he’s played striker before
Reece James was the first name I thought of. Having watched him at my club, Wigan, he can play in so many positions, he certainly did for us. He excels everywhere
should have included Ashley Young, he literally played all ten positions and he is still playing on pro level.
winger on both sides? check
full back on both sides? check
central midfielder? check
central attacker? check
central defender? check
I think you’re underrating just how capable of scoring goals Kimmich is
Harry Kane. Tall and strong enough to play CB. Quick enough and good crosser to play out wide and tactically aware enough to play CM
Did not even think of Goretzka but absolutely agree that he was an outstanding choice
Kimmich Goretzka Gravenberch Sabitzer Musiala what are bayern cooking?
Great list but Llorente had to feature. He does it all and very well too.
James Milner? my guy legit plays everywhere, he delt with Foden vs Man City and he usually plays CM
Gonzalo Castro has to be here. He has played every single position except center back, but since he played a lot of his games as right back, he surely can play that too.
Walker deserve a shout a it is a “XI” and he can definitely play in goal
Marcos Llorente and Federico Valverde deserve a shoutout
I haven’t even finished watching the video and I can say that Reece James could outplay any player in this list. Full back, right wing, center mid, number 9. He can do it all.
What are you smoking, he doesn’t have the calmness and control to operate in midfield. He beats players with power and that’s why he is suited out wide and a good defender but he looks average in midfield. Saw him in a few games for Chelsea last season. World class at defending and stacking out wide but average at best playing midfield.
He need to play striker for Chelsea then, cus they don’t have one.
I think Ridle Baku would be able to do a job anywhere on the pitch but his height could hold him back a bit
No mention to Marcos Llorente? That's disrespectful 😂
Alphonso Davies, Frenkie De Jong, Fede Valverde, Joelinton
Another shout I think would have been Nordi Mukiele
One of the worst regular starter for man U
He can’t even play his “best” position well
This somehow reminded me of Paddy McNair.
He was almost substituted in the final match against Argentina.
marouane fellaini was the first player that came to mind when I saw this title
Gundogan’s recovery pace is extremely underrated and slept on.. criminally underplayeer all round
That’s why Bayern allowed him to go
I also think Sergio Ramos would be a great striker and midfielder. He can literally do anything
Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Weston McKennie, Oleksandr Zinckenko, Sandro Tonali, Frank Kessie, Marcos Alonso, Andre Frank-Zambo Anguissa, Marcos Llorente, Bruno Guimaraes, Matteo Guendouzi, Kalvin Phillips, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Pablo Fornals
Amazing shout for Reece James. He's so elite at everything on the pitch. Best RB in the world
Stop, he's not even the best fullback for his own country
Walker, TAA, Cancelo, Kimmich, Hakimi and those are just the ones i got off the top of my head
Hes really really good but saying hes the best rb in the world is like saying bruno fernandes is the best cam in the world
ruud gullit is the most classic example of a player that can play every position
Cancelo has a wonderstrike
I'm not sure about Joao Cancelo at CB
Same
Lothar Matthaus, Patrick Viera, Roy Keane, Claude Makalele, Gennaro Gattuso, Didier Deschamps, Graeme Souness, Dunga, Frank Rijkaard, Alex Song, Paul Scholes, Garrincha, Edgar Davids, Marcelo, Phillip Lahm, Arturo Vidal, and last but not least Charlie Adam.
Weston McKinnie deserves a shout here, both Schalke & Juventus rely on him to be in both sides of the field
Look at this: Deyovaisio Zeefuik from Hertha BSC
He was bought from Groningen in 2020 as a promising talent on the right back positon.
Pretty sure Lucas Vasquez has played in every position on the field except the goal
Reece James has played RB LB CB CMF was a striker In youth days and can certainly play as A winger too
Surely the most complete RB England Has ATM
Firmino is sometimes playing CB according to Virgil van Dijk, so I'm mentioning him, since he played both forward and midfielder already.
I think new Spurs signing Ivan Perišić deserved to be on the list. Thru his career he played as winger both right and left, wing-back on both side, central midfield and striker. Basically for Inter he played everything except centre-back, which he would do just fine being 6’2’’ and good in the air.
I'm so happy you spoke about Goretska, one of my favorite players EVER
Frenkie de jong could be on this list over Mcginn. He has played centerback for Barca a couple of times and he has also played quite far up field and scored some goals
I would argue that he has not featured enough on the flanks or been energetic enough to be considered an all-rounder like the listed players, though there is no doubt of his intelligence and ball mastery. Great pick btw.
At least think he deserves a mention, As a Barca fan I would rather have a team of frenkie de jongs than a team of albas
Van Hanegem is for me criminally underrated, thanks for bringing him up. He has both technical skills at grandmaster level AND was a true bastard that was able to dominate physically. If he's your dad's fave, then he is a true expert in my book!
@@ivoluijendijk5529 Appreciate the reply. It was an educated guess from your second name. My dad and I are Scottish from Glasgow. Unfortunately he became aware of WvH when he went as a fan to the Celtic v Feyenoord 1970 European Cup Final in Milan - he was the best player on the pitch and my dad was a fan from that day. I’ve always liked Feyenoord, given the Wim Jansen (rest his soul) connection and that I visited De Kuip when my youth amateur team toured many years ago. I was around 13/14 in 1989/90. Fantastic trip. We also visited PSV stadion and got to play their youth team at the training ground. We got destroyed 😂
@@Shades-of-76 that is an awesome story! Though I am an Ajax fan myself, my father was pure Feyenoord and I visited de Kuip quite a few times. An amazing stadium and when filled with the amazing Feyenoord fans, it sends chills down your spine.
@@ivoluijendijk5529 Even in a world full of social media vitriol these days, I think true football fans can still appreciate the quality of opposing teams and players. Your view of Feyenoord as an Ajax fan seems very generous and that’s great. I’m not so sure I could be the same with Rangers, lol. Joking, all of my nephews support them. I’ve been to Amsterdam several times as a tourist but only once to the ArenA for a match, the 2001 CL qualifier between Ajax and Celtic. It’s a spectacular stadium. I actually used to travel quite a lot to away fixtures in Europe when I was a young man ... before I had a mortgage and a responsible job! That said I was at AZ Alkmaar this time last year. Great trip and a lovely city.
I’d give a shout to Alessandro Florenzi, he’s played almost everywhere on the pitch apart from poacher, he has the pace and stamina to do a job in every position and he can strike a ball incredibly well
Malynovski or gosens are my bold shouts
I feel like Emerson may have been overlooked, his tackling and passing are some of the best around, and apparently used to play in midfield as a youngster, rumour is he's good at FKs/Pens too. Perhaps doesn't have the speed as some, but that's an unknown really as GKs don't tend to need to train for that. Plus, he could play in Goal too, y'know. His actual position.
Emerson is shite
Azpi and even JT who was great at scoring non-pen goals as a def deserve a shoutout.
CR7 & Leo playing Wing Back or Defensive Midfielder would be a sight for sore eyes …. 👀. ⚽️
CR7 being excepted to track back 👀
Although he might not be one of the best players right now, Sergi Roberto has literarily played in every single outfield position throughout his career. Started in midfield, then moved to right back and was even crucial in the Clásico as a right winger with an assist on Luis Suárez. He should have been in this list.
