The Sony covers more room. I've tried them both even the UE. I've owned them all. Higher pitch and bass does not equal a sound everyone enjoys. Mind you, I've own all three and I've worked in shops where we play music all day. Hope this helps 👍
Professional and detailed review! Particularly when describing frequencies responce. Thanks! Would've been nice to demonstrate the sound of the speakers.
So I recently purchased this speaker, and the sound is amazing, but the mid tones have to be adjusted with your phone settings and app. But is seems to me that Sony did this purposely. Now when I paired this speaker to the XB43, the sound is epic and flawless. You get the clear midtones from the XB43 and the deep, deep bass and acoustics from the XG500, and it sound is like being at a concert. I feel that they did this purposely for the party connect, and it works. If you have the side to side setting on your phone, it sounds much better that the wide surround sound also.
I've had both of these.. and I settled with the Sony as it was $100 cheaper (on sale). Out of the box, the Sony doesn't sound as good as the JBL but once you up the trebel to +5 and the bass to +5 (I left the mid to +0) it sounded just as good at higher volumes as the JBL and it brings boomier bass (which I prefer). Sony's have always sounded more soft vs JBLs sounding brighter (and sometimes almost too harsh for me). The XG500 is $350 right now on sale and worth every penny.. I can't justify the JBL for $450.. Although it'll eventually go on sale for $350 as well and it's also fully waterproof (submergible) vs the Sony not being submergible, but at least it can handle lots of rain and splashes without any worries.
And as you said "most people" won't be able to tell the quality difference, they are both good and the sony has more of an indoor look, while the jbl is more blasting music outside
