I can't understand why he isn't mentioned together with the likes of Warren, Merrill, Gobbi etc. In my opinion he really belongs up there with the absolute best!
Warren and Merrill had considerably larger voices, along with MacNeill, which is why they might have been more well known and gotten more recording contracts. Not sure of the size of Gobbi’s voice comparatively. Zancanaro has a more lyric voice, but gorgeous in timbre and perfect technique. A very satisfying voice to listen to. Heard his Renato and fell in love with his voice.
@@sw5114 The "stars" are not usually "the best" singers. They get publicity, some good reviews by promenant people, develop reputations and an audience following that sells tickets. Over time people become less objective or at least more forgiving about things like vocal technical flaws because they just want to hear someone they're familiar with and can recognize. Sherrill Milnes, for example, sang flat high notes almost all the time and yet he had a very long MET career because he could still sell tickets just because he was Sherrill Milnes. Zancanaro could sing circles around him on any given day. But Zancanaro was a humble, non-publicity seeking, authentic italian baritone who didn't try to be a "star" even though he was a far superior singer and artist to many other "star" baritones who played better politics than he and were better positioned in the marketing game.

jbell0243 it’s very handsome and resonant, in its way. I’m not sure I’d call it traditionally beautiful, in the manner of a Merrill, Bastianini, Croft, etc. and I suspect that kept him somewhat under appreciated by the wider public, not unlike Cornell MacNeil.

Zancanaro was a lyric baritone with an adequate volume (not huge). In the theatre his voice can not reach the darkness and the grainy quality of Merryl. And compared with Bastianini he was a lyric tenor. So, no, he can't be in the same firmament as the other's. I heard Zancanaro many times in the theatre and always liked him. But...
Better than Merrill surely. Bastianini had a bigger voice but there are similarities. Any professional singer would put Zancanaro in the very top rank .
No todos los baritonos tienen que tener voces pesadas. Al igual que existen muchos tipos de tenores pasa con los Barítonos. Prefiero muchas veces veces el gusto y la línea de canto a un vozarón.

McNeil didn't have a particularly good voice. I think Maestro and Vladimir Chernv have the most beautiful voices in bariton-world
