Honestly, it’s the parents Job to monitor what THEIR child watches instead of using UA-cam as a babysitter. UA-cam is killing itself. 3/4 of the channels I watch are arts and crafts channels, and the fact that UA-cam finds art childish is SAD.
We are all behind you. Keep fighting! in the end, all I know is that the FTC is about to get A LOT of angry yet educational emails.
In this case, it’s not really UA-cam’s fault, they are trying to cover their own butt, they can’t exactly snub the FTC and keep going on the same way.
I agree completely that it should be on the parents to control what their kids watch. It’s rubbish that UA-cam got fined for this. Like, they can’t control when a parent just hands their device to their kid, why is it their fault now?!
Sounds like more people making decisions over things they dont understand.
Josh Davis
Pretty much, because if they did they’d know the TOS states that those under 13 shouldn’t be using UA-cam and that UA-cam kids exists.
More that they don't understand how wide reaching the consequences will be. I prefer watching UA-cam over TV these days, and gaming/crafting/toy review channels are the main things I watch. So, I'm not happy about this, and sometimes I feel like I'm just waiting for UA-cam to shut down because everyone worth watching has been forced off.
Hey peeps tell every craft like youtubers like moriah elizabeth about this (moriah elizabeth and nerdecrafter should make a video together

I am 20 and I like "childish" stuff why do people think its only for kids
Ikr! Im 13 i love watching these ary youtubers. Tho most teens might think.its "too got damn childish"
Huh. Who wants to bet Twitch’s content EXPLODES in January, after the entire arts & crafts community are driven off of UA-cam?
Also: as a parent, it is MY RESPONSIBILITY to be mindful of the media (including adverts) that my child consumes. It is NOT UA-cam’s (or anyone else’s) responsibility, rightly or wrongly, to decide what is appropriate for my child to view. As in all things, I’m responsible to make sure that I’m vetting what my child does, or I don’t deserve to be a parent.
This has made me want to do Twitch more now and my viewers if they like the content can decide to support me by sending bits and subs my way which is better then getting zip for being an under dog here on UA-cam with only 300 subs.
You're so right but the majority of kids are raised on screens with the parent off doing what they want
I'm so angry that they think that art and drawing is automatically child directed. I draw for a living and love my job and commissioners and personally I feel offended by this
not to mention a lot of traditional artists use alcohol based pens, which cannot be sold to kids but I'm sure that would be overlooked.
My art style looks kid friendly but the character stories contain violence, so certainly not for kids.
Im glad more people feel this way, this actually strongly discouraged me from posting my art speed pints i make when i draw. I was going to, but seeing this i dont want to anymore.
Lovely Art Angels Go for it, but don't click the for kids button and don't draw kids art such as animation.
Hi Jacki, it was nice meeting you at vidsummit this year. Thank you for making this video. This is really scary stuff for all of us creators. I will make a video as well about it on my channel to bring awareness.
So basically because there are parents who can’t monitor their own children now UA-cam has to pay for it & ultimately the creators and we the audience also have to suffer
Let’s be honest

Yes so like how can they stop it if they watch everything ? It’s like wanting to stop UA-cam !

"Adult content" get demonized.

How about if parents step up and “parent” and take responsibility for their own children rather than let the government punish the rest of us because they are incapable of doing so.
Exactly right! It should only be on the parents to regulate what their kids watch.
Sadly lots of parents nowadays give their kids tablets or their phones too keep them quiet, my aunt does that with her daughter. I’m the one that monitors what my cousin watches because her mom couldn’t care less as long a she’s quiet and staying still. They think of tablets and phone as some sort of “babysitter”
As a parent, I whole heartily agree. My son isn't even two yet, but I make sure he watches good quality content. He loves watching cartoons, musicals. He does not watch anything dealing with fighting, gore, excessive violence, swearing etc... His dad lets him watch police chases, he loves the sounds of sirens and his reactions are adorable.
@@pinkusdean1178 exactly! The FTC is throwing their weight around and twisting what COPPA is actually for. COPPA is in place to help protect children under the age of 13 from getting their personal information taken and the FTC is waaaayy over stepping it.

Kittybug 247 that’s not what this is. This is damage control for money they lost themselves. They targeted ads to kids, and that’s why they got fined. Not because parents let their kids watch what they want.
This is about targeted ads towards children. Children who's data is collected and then they are served ads which they aren't developed enough to understand are ads. It's not about parents not parenting and children watching content that's too mature for their age.
If parents don't like what their kids see, then they need to learn to step in and *PARENT* for once in their lives.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
And why youtube have app for kids for if they going set this new rules
I have submitted my letter and voiced my concerns. I have wanted to become a content creator for a while now. I teach history and I want to create a history channel that is not only educational but also I would love to include projects that anyone can do to help reinforce the lesson or are time period appropriate. The new possible regulations has paused this endeavor. It is my hope that the FTC will listen to our collective voices. I love you Jackie. You are a inspiration. You are entertaining. You help me as a single mom with a limited income make better buying choices. You are not alone. We will fight this battle with you.
That doesn't make any sense, Rick and Morty are also cartoon characters but is it for children? No.
As a crafting creator, parent to two young children, and a viewer... I left a BIG OL’ comment. The point you and Jeremy made about parental consent was an aspect I hadn’t thought of and as a parent, it got me even more riled up. If I give my consent for my kids to use my UA-cam account, that is my choice. And I frequently watch crafting videos WITH my kids. Some of these rules feel like if I took my kids to the park and I told them it was okay for them to go climb the plastic rockwall and a stranger came over and took them off the rockwall because it’s too dangerous. Excuse me, I am their parent and their parenting is MY responsibility, not yours. Mind ya bidness.
Thanks for sharing this topic and some ways we can help!

My kids are the REASON I found Jackie in the first place. My youngest saw a thumbnail on my phone with Angel and screamed with delight. We've binged everything Jackie has made, and I don't know how often we've seen the videos featuring Angel. Through all that content, I've never once felt like my kids were being targeted. This whole situation is ridiculous, and you bet I sent a BIG 'OL comment as well. You keep doin' you Raven.
I completely agree with you. The reason this is even a thing is because of parents that don't want to have the responsibility of researching what their kids are watching. That's why they need a very ineffective algorithm to tell them what's appropriate or not.
But the new regulations aren't stopping you from watching UA-cam with your kids. They are just regulating the targeted advertising. Television does the same thing.
In your park analogy it would be like if you took your kid to the park and before they could play they had to be subjected to several demonstrations of toys and food they're going to be likely to want. What if the only demonstrations were extremely violent toys and junk food? How would you feel about your kid playing at the park then?
It's not the content that's being restricted it's the advertising.
(The negative effects upon the channels obviously suck, but it's important kids are protected)
@@sarahwarmington3172 Yeah, of course, but I suppose my point is that it's my responsibility as a parent to step in if those kinds of things are being shown to my kids. I don't want some third party deciding what is and isn't okay for my kids, that's what I should be doing. I agree that kids need to be protected but that's first and foremost, my job as a parent and not someone else's. Not every parent has the same standards for what their kids need to be protected from.
Hey everyone! I watched a lot of videos about this, spreading my homework with you all.
Essentially, the response by UA-cam was NOT required of them by the law. The COPPA law actually recommended an Age Gate to sequester children away without affecting the rest of the channels. Also, there is a line (16 C.F.R Section 312.2 if you care) within the law that protects general audience channels from litigation. UA-cam chose not to do the Age Gate, and UA-cam chose to to the For/Not For kids click button without any middle ground, and install an automated flagging system. This is NOT an FTC and COPPA problem. This is a UA-cam problem. COPPA is however trying to fight for the idea that Channel Owners are operators of their own site, and not you tube. THIS is the point that needs to be fought with the FTC.

No. Google is paying a fine because they broke the law. No different than you or I getting caught for speeding, Google and it's data mining has been intrusive enough that it's implemented data from children under the protected age of 13, for advertising targets. There are no laws specifying the age, race, species of mammal or otherwise, that prevent children under 13 from viewing videos on UA-cam. However the collection of data on ANYONE is Google's responsibility alone as there's no physical hand off from the user to Google, who in essence steals it. Despite the innocents of declaring what data is obtained, buried under several pages of finely printed links, that's no excuse for violating consumer protections.

There is absolutely nothing that isn't "appealing " to children, they are nosy little buggers and want to know everything they may get 2 minutes into a video and decide its not what they want but they also may not. It is the place of parents to know what their child is doing and what you tubes they are watching. It is the place of parents to not let kids watch things on their accounts.
Remember me between the age of 10 -12, risking my very life to sneak into my parent's bedroom and going through my dad's drawers until I struck pay dirt with a copy of Playboy's 1971 issue, I can only imagine as a millennial, the lengths that I would go through to seek out and explore my targeted content on the internet ...... "Yes, I am 18" not to mention some of the content here on this very site ....... Ah yes, once again, "Let's make decisions about things we know nothing about!"
So art, basically, is now considered child-directed? Well, screw all the adult-oriented artists. Also characters being "child-directed" is just weird. It's super vague, as characters can have many different portrayals.
As I'm big into Transformers, I'll use it as my example. While they are usually toys for kids, some of the comic-based content is really skirting the lines to stay child friendly. They can be extremely violent, to the point I would not want a young child reading them. But I do love the characters and have/will make fanart of them.
I'll definitely leave a comment. These rules are ridiculous.

UA-cam is supposed to be a place where we can express ourselves and have a say but what now... you’re getting rid of most things people have access to. So what if it’s a craft kit. Your evaluating everything telling us to NOT waste money or how this is good education!
And if we get rid of everything that is child directed witch will be demonized and if your getting rid of everything that isn’t appropriate for adults and it is demonized what are we supposed to post? Science facts well if there’s bright colors its child directed so even though this was not intended to do this and have SO many comments demanding other wise just think.
Also, what constitutes a “child?” I’m 15. Would I be considered a child because I’m underaged? Or would I be considered an adult because I as an individual have the mental capacity and maturity of most adults? I am not a creator, but I know from other videos that viewers will be effected by these changes too. Because I watch Nerdecrafter, Dollightful, Moriah Elizabeth, etc, will I not be able to watch “adult” content that I love as well? I’m in that middle category where I’m treated as an adult, but I am not yet legally one. How am I supposed to be happy using this platform if it is unclear how I will be designated? How am I supposed to be happy if I have to choose between “child appealing” and “adult” content?
I'm turning 17 in a month and practically a year away from being considered an adult.
Us teenagers are getting to where we are coming from childhood to adulthood and are stuck in between.
Be still aren't considered adults but a lot of us end up having the mind capacity and maturity as one.
I know since I was too at an early age of my early teens and still being such.
People though I was a couple years older than I was because of my maturity.
Now I like the fact that we might get better adult content on UA-cam but the fact that they are doing this to the Arts & Crafts community isn't right.
Seeing that it can be for everyone, not all of it is going to be considered kid friendly.
It's a very broad community and it needs to be seen as such.
I too love those creators as well as Jackie.
Besides how can Jackie and some of those creators be considered for children only when they sometimes sneak in those dirty jokes that most kids probably won't get and shouldn't get.
There's should be content for everyone, but you have to find a way to make it work.
I was also thinking this... Seeing as I am also 15 and it's weird... I feel as though I am a mature adult-ish type person, I feel as though I have a child-ish side as well. I know I am of a mind to understand that what I am watching is NOT for children but it isn't exactly something... I can't watch. I feel as though this is an issue we need to think hard and long on!!!

People make a living off of youtube, they're employing themselves amd becoming hard working entrepreneurs. Such a silly law would put a lot of people out of work and would mean more tax dollars in welfare if they can't find any other job ☹️
As a woman I feel offended by the declaration of female topics being "childish"!
I'll do best as I can to support you.
It takes a village to raise a child. Apparently this village has no clue what they're doing.
This is what I commented
"In this case, you are Cencoreshipping creators who make works of art from dolls, or help parents make informed decisions when buying either a toy or a potentially dangerous kit.
And turning off comments WILL isolate 13+ teens who don't have social media or aren't allowed to have social media from the rest of the community, and in turn, impair the content creator from receiving feedback and requests from a large part of their audience.
By forcing this law, you are also pushing those who do art AND get their money from youtube to forward their careers.
If you are so worried about the kids, forward your attention to the UA-camKids App, and push to improve that app for kids under the age of 13, instead of attacking the creators on the site meant for older audiences."
#nerdification
They meed to actually care about it because
UA-cam kids....is weird but they do not do anything about it and shove all kids rules onto regular youtube
This is very good cause I'm over 13 but still with my parents and UA-cam is the only thing I'm allowed to have(under strict circumstances) so even if creators start finding ways not to get demonetized by cursing a bit, still will hurt them cause people like my parents won't allow us to watch it cause it has cursing, I know I can't be the only one with this problem
Has any Karen’s that are complaining about “inappropriate content” heard of an app called Kids UA-cam?
UA-cam kids has some not appropriate videos because they're also targeting kids and they are Elsa gate which isn't good
Some children find access to UA-cam regardless. Some are attracted to UA-cam more. They will find a way to get to UA-cam.
The most confusing part is where do u draw the line? Are sponge bob memes going to be seen as for children? They are going to take away our memes?
honestly what's to stop them from taking this concept to other social media platforms? honestly it might not be long before people are doing the same thing to our precious memes!!!!
UA-cam was the only and is the only thing I watch and now I have a to go somewhere else because of this, there will be barely any thing to watch, and it’s extremely difficult for UA-cam full timers to make any money! Moriah is an awesome channel like you, and she’s a full time UA-camr this is terrible and I wish everyone luck through this weird and difficult time
Here's a novel idea: How about parents taking some responsiDAMNbility and policing their own kids and leave the government and social media platforms out of it. Asinine.
newer gona hapen, perents dunt wanto and dunt know how to be perents anymore. and if you try to be a perent then you rice the risk of the goverments taking your child away cous your being a bad perent.
so this is just gona hapen more and more and more
@@kokopuppy57342 Well... that's not true. I can assure there are many parents out there that use UA-cam kids, otherwise it wouldn't exist. My kids watch UA-cam Kids. And as their mother I will sometimes let them watch UA-cam.com under my supervision. Because there is content here that there isn't on youtube kids and that is MUCH better and more intelligent that some of the crap they have in youtube kids. Putting all parents in the same box of "bad irresponsible people" is unreal and unfair. Is like saying all pitbulls are aggressive and violent dogs.
The thing is, even if content is “ child-appealing”, that doesn’t mean that it can’t appeal to adults as well. Stepping away from UA-cam for a bit, shows like Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Miraculous, and My Little Pony all possess adult audiences despite being “child appealing” content.
Yeah Steven universe and all shows have adult peal like sexuality and abuse while always having a appeal to kids why can’t UA-cam and FTC have a agreement
No one is saying that adults can’t find child appealing content or products appealing. The fact that cartoons made for kids have adults jokes thrown in proves this. All they are saying is that children need to be protected from content that is made for adults but interesting to kids. A lot of UA-cam content creators don’t know how to mask adult jokes or content into their child appealing videos, or don’t realize that although they aren’t marketing to kids they are making content that children want to watch. UA-cam is just trying to make sure that kids aren’t being taken advantage of or stumbling upon content not made for them.
This is unfair
How about the parents take care of the children and not give them a phone because they are to young huuuuh
Edit: thx for the likes and I understand its not always the parents fault but they still shouldn't blame the youtubers
I totally agree. If it's as big of an issue as the FTC says it is, which I dont think it is, it should be on the parents to change. Any government entity should be excluded on this issue.
Cats love true. That’s better than changing the whole ( sorry if I wrote the wrong one) platform.
Guess what? I AM A PARENT! And my kids watch this WITH ME!! OR, they watch what I've already watched, and approve of!!
@Just_AutumnYT Since everything nowadays is dangerous,i think they SHOULD have a phone, but NOT a SMARTPHONE.Maybe a 2000's phone on which its possible to make calls and text their parents?
I grew up on youtube. I learned from UA-cam. I'm still learning from it like, I'm Polish but I'm not as good as I used to be at it so I'm rewatching the Polish UA-cam Content Creators that I used to watch and I'm getting better from it. If this actually happens my heart will be broken.
This will affect everyone not just women but all family friendly content creators
I just opened UA-cam Studio and have the message “ all creators are obligated to take action and comply. review your channel and video settings” 😞 The thought of being fined for accidentally labeling a video wrong is terrifying. My channel is very small but I still don’t want to label my videos as children’s videos. I don’t know what to do about polymer clay videos that they might think are for children. For instance my polymer clay ET. Could definitely look like it’s for children on my channel. I don’t understand why there is not a button that you just click when you open the UA-cam app agreeing that you’re an adult !
Let’s be real children are still going to be watching videos on UA-cam... now they’ll just be watching all the things that parents really don’t want them to.
So so salty! 🧂 😡
I feel you, i also have a very small channel, i do graphic designs, they could easily say that the content i make is for children. I even have heard something about terminating channels that dont make them enough money....
I'm a microscopic channel that, currently, makes animations and progress videos of artwork for fictional characters. Based on their vague outlines, I could very well fall under "child directed". But I am not a content creator for children, I never will be and some of my artwork probably shouldn't even be viewed by children.
I’m a fandom channel with 136 subs. I already don’t make money. The heck is wrong with them that they think this is okay???
I’m worried about my animations tbh, cuz they take forever and I’m not entirely sure what they’re gonna think of animations
what world is this! god damn it! so basically salt is DEMONETIZED! adults such as Nerdy crafter, or Moriah Elizabeth are just trying to tell parents that some kits go IN DA TRASH and to not buy them. I really don't understand why it should be demonetized DUH
UA-cam: we are going to get rid of all kids stuff
FTC: *ima bout to end this man's career*
(Son peeps too me to change it but it also makes sense so yeet)
well it's mostly the FTC doing it, so maybe edit it to be FTC? you don't have to though!
UA-cam: ALLLLLRIGHTY CHILD-APPEAL THIS AND THAT AND THERE WE GO NOW ANYTHING ARTSY IS ONLY FOR CHILDREN EVEN THOUGH WE KNOW ITS FOR ADULTS TOO!!!
art and craft youtubers: ima 'bout to end this mans whole career
They can say that everything's "child-appealing":
Animals: kiDs LiKE AniMalS
Food: kIds Eat FoOd
Even houses: KidS wIlL wAnT tO haVe this HoUuSE🤦♀️😤😤😤
I hate COPPA.
It's not our fault if we're creative and we make drawings/ sculptures
Well, can you see where this is going????
UA-cam: KiDS LiKe YoUtUbE
FTC: BoOm YoUr DeMoNeTiZeD
Me in my room
Mom: clean your room!
Me: ok
Me : *throws coppa in trash and burns it*
Mom: perfect!
My floor: FINALLY
Women: Rewievs D*ldos
UA-cam: yep thats for kids
Hey, I got a bright pink one that's called a "Unicorn Horn"... It's even sparkly. I'm pretty sure the Algorithm would call that child friendly content...I think this is just a bit too loosely worded to be Constitutional even.
You know, there are a lot of fake animal rescues and animal abuse in UA-cam and they have nothing better to do, than concentrate on this 😂
Dear Government, there’s a difference between Family-Friendly content and Child-Aimed content
Even toy reviews (Great Big Toy Box) can be geared for adults (who are buying things) but are absolutely family friendly
I mean its not just female creators, most channels are also in danger.
Yeah I don't know why she put Woman channels" it's all toy channel's
@@WestCoastGraffiti Not even that, gaming channels and channels that even are not directed to kids but kids still watch are in danger.
she's focusing mainly on craft channels because she herself is a craft channel, and many arts and crafts type hobbies are seen as being feminine
PROTESTTT! WE NEED TO FIGHT FOR THE CRAFTERS, SLIMERS, SQUISHERS TOO!!!
It IS actually UA-cam doing this because the FTC provides for a “general audience” option that would alleviate this whole shemozzle but UA-cam won’t allow it because they can’t make as much money off ads. Put the blame where it belongs which is squarely on UA-cam!
They should punish the people like Guava Juice and Logan Paul, they are exploring kids. Not amazing people like you!!
(Wow that’s a lotta likes thanks guys)
And don't forget Troom Troom, Five minute crafts and it's subchannels, and blossom etc etc
Usually, I hate grammer nazis , but what you mean is they are *exploiting* kids. If they were *exploring* kids, then they'd be pedophiles too. 😂
Couldn't agree more though.
Honestly, I agree, but it really isn't fair to punish a select few. It's either everyone get the punishment, or no one.
How to be targeted for teens:
*use one swear word per video*
PG-13 movies are allowed one non-sexual use of the f word in the US :)
Yes but what about the younger kids I know she does not aim at kids but I know we have some young grains let's not ruin it for them :/
NyanGamer64 just be family friendly and don't post anything inappropriate. It's better
Save Marine Life have you watched the video? If you make family friendly content you get demonized or even fined. You. Can’t. Make. Family. Friendly. Content. Even though that’s what UA-cam has been pushing forever
Thank you for doing this video. I am sharing with my friends and followers and have commented on the FTC page. Thank you for mentioning to be clear and concise, SUPER important for getting our message across. I recently my crafting channel and have just TODAY learned of what is about to go down. You are correct, together we can help the FTC fix the issue. We could simply need a "GENERAL" option instead of cut and dry (according to Ian - Social Media Lawyer) child directed or not. Thanks for making this video! Jo McEwen
**cracks knuckles** where's the petition?
Why are all these parents such Karens? There’s a KIDS app, MADE FOR THEIR KIDS, yet they’re complaining and the FTC is forcing creators to comply with THEIR rules all because some Karens want to let their kids to watch the regular UA-cam, where there is ADULT CONTENT.
That’s like taking your kids into a bar, complaining that there’s alcohol, then calling the cops.
edit: typos
@@kaaayy7446 sorry I meant entitledparents and entitled people
It affects all of us, no matter content or gender at this point because the rules are so vague.
I just had my daughter in September and have started watching nursery videos from my account since I pay for UA-cam red so I don’t have to worry about ads on the videos. I’ll be insanely pissed if my account starts to be limited because I decided to let my daughter watch and listen to children’s videos.
I don’t make content anymore but might plan to in the future so if my account is deemed a child it could affect my future videos.
This whole situation is bullshit.
Please watch the video ALL the Way! The issue isn't with UA-cam. UA-cam is following a LAW. We need to change the LAW as it is. Please check these links after the video:

NerdE, we have a problem. I tried to post my comment on the FTC, but every time, it kept saying, "Please correct all errors to continue" and it said I left the comments section blank even though I typed it. Is anyone else having this problem?
