J.Geils was the ultimate Party Band back in the day. Much better live show than many others. They really got intimate with the audience. Knew how to ramp-up the crowd in just moments. In the late 70's it was a quick trip up to Hampton Beach Casino to see them play, many times every summer. Spend a day on the beach, and the evening with Peter Wolf. They did it for the audience, not themselves. PS: Peter Wolf toured with Zappa for a few years, as a keyboardist.
A different Peter Wolf played keyboards for Zappa. Peter S. Wolf born in Austria 1952.
This was a must-have party album in college in the ‘70’s. J. Geiles rocks!! ✌️❤️🎶
One of the all time best live albums.
Peter Wolf is the fastest talking singer I've ever seen. In Detroit we kind of adopted them. They played to sold out shows all thru the 70's and 80's.
The Pine Knob shows were great!
Seen them at COBO ARENA. Great show
Back in the day, this was THE party band!
Pronounced J Giles
"Geils" rhymes with "smiles"...✌
Hard G. Like gorilla not giraffe.
Yes Lee butchers names a lot
J Geils Band was an absolute killer band to see in concert
You’ve gone and done it now Lee. Grew up in Boston, saw J Geils at least 10 times, even saw them as headliners for a free concert put on by the City of Boston that was part of an arts and cultural program called Summerthing. That particular concert the opening act for Geils was Aerosmith, as they were just getting noticed outside of New England. J Geils are the original Bad Boys of Boston .. Peter Wolf lead singer was a disc jockey at WBCN FM in Boston, the premier FM station in the country, he was married at one time to actress Faye Dunaway, and BCN introduced so many bands to the world including being the biggest launching platform for Led Zeppelin in the US. This is by far the best live album ever recorded, Magic Dick on the lickin stick is one of the best harmonica players ever. The reaction from the Detroit crowd on this album is indicative of every concert they did. Whole album is great, but another great one is First I Look At The Purse. On later years they got commercial, but still stated risqué with Centerfold, and Freeze Frame.
Can’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen them live in the old Boston Garden during the 70’s. Fantastic party group!
One of my older brothers and two of my older sisters were at that show at the Cinderella Ballroom. I'm the youngest out of nine kids, and I was born in 1966. I missed all of the good shows in the '60s and '70s, but I've heard the grand tales from the Cinderella Ballroom, the Michigan Theater, the Grande Ballroom, and all the other legendary Detroit joints that my siblings hung out in. I had my share of great shows, as well, but in a later era. I'm glad you liked it. The J. Geils Band was the best party band, ever. I have always loved their music.
"First I look At The Purse" is another great one off this album.
This is what an entire J. Geils show was like, start to finish!
The late '70s; four frat bros living in a two-story house; sorority girls drop by every afternoon to smoke pot; and each of the four of us had favorite music to turn each other on to. That's where I first heard J Geils from Welto the acid man. I think we crammed 20 years of living in a brief seven years, but I wouldn't have missed it.
Their other live album 'Blow Your Face Out' is fab too. Especially "Must've Got Lost' with that epic intro.
Nope except must have got lost
the lead singer PETER WOLF, married the actress FAYE DUNNAWAY, from bonnie and clyde.
I was about 12 when this was spinning on my brother's turntable in our folks rec room. That was 54 years ago now. Awesome memories right there. And some good advise "first I look at the purse".
Did two sessions with them in the late 70's, oz coke, Lb of reefer, and bottle of quaaludes and we were rockin!!!! Ambassador Jenks
Saw J Geils in West Virginia, I think in 1972 in an outdoor concert with Black Oak Arkansas, Grand Funk, and I think another band I can't remember who. J Geils rocked.
Oh baby, their concerts were sooo much fun!!! ❤😊
Glad you liked it Lee; they've got a few more, just be aware their 80s MTV stuff was straight up pop. Pretty good pop, but not the R&B boogie they played in the 70s.
They were The Party Band! Grew up in Boston saw them many times, always a blast 😊
This was one of the greatest live bands I ever saw. I have listened to this album for decades, and glad you got to react to these guys at their (long) peak.
When the J. Geils Band were on their game they were the best live band in the world, and if they weren't on their game they never fell below third place. Something to see, I mean, something to see!
If you want another great J Geils Band tune to listen to, try Detroit Breakdown. The J Geils Band was from Boston, but they loved Detroit, and we adopted them as our own. They were a two City band. The same could be said for Aerosmith. They really love Detroit as well.
I had this album in HS 40 years ago. I had a friend then who was at this concert in Cobo Hall, I believe. I brought this album to a HS dance and it got everyone on the floor!
Not Cobo Hall, it was recorded at The Cinderella Ballroom in Ann Arbor.
@@petermay3861the Cinderella Ballroom was on East Jefferson in Detroit
@@drewreid1313 my bad I could have sworn the Cinderella was in Ann Arbor, What was the name of the venue I was thinking about I'm going to jump on the Google machine and see if I can jog my memory.
J. Geils Band was the party band of the 1970s. I saw them blow the roof off Cobo Hall in Detroit!
Cobo Arena was the best place to see a concert. Except tier c.
Magic Dick was one of the great stage names in rock music. The only one I know of at that level was Bob Seger's sax player, Alto Reed.
RIP Alto 😢. Turn the Page.
"Give it to me" is fantastic
Peter Wolf had a successful solo career, too. Quite talented.
Nothing but a party is another great song
Hahahahaha!
Few facts:
Tge bands name comes from the name of the Lead Guitarist of the band and its pronounced "GILES" as in a hard "I".
Peter Wolfe the lead vocalist, was quite the Lady's Man. Fay Dunaway, a very famous leading actress in the day, was his lady for years.
And "Magic Dick" was actually referred to and introduced as "Magic Dick & His Lickin' Stick"...referring to his absolute shredding on the Harmonica... He wore a belt with many of them for all the different songs. Sometimes holding & play as many as three during one song. A few other great songs by them, to check out:
First I look at the purse.
Serves you right to suffer.
My Angel is a centerfold.
Magic Dick has taught classes on Whammer Jammer playing.
I saw these guys open for the Edgar Winter Group in the summer of 1972 and they were great!!!
Magic Dick and his “lickin’ stick” would’ve blown the roof off of the place if it hadn’t been an outdoor venue.
Good stuff!!!
One of the first albums I bought, back in ‘72. It doesn’t disappoint!
Damn, for a first time listening to J. Geils (as in MILES) you hit the Gold mine with the two songs that show off the best live band of the 70's! Saw them 10 times and amazing as hell every time...Peter Wolf one of the best front men ever....Magic Dick unrivaled in rock harmonical.and the rhtym of bassits Danny Joe Klein and drummer Stephen Joe Bladd drove the engine..Wild ass shows every night...You can't NOT MOVE to them...Best Boogie Blues ever...Your head was bopping like crazy..ANything live from them is a must listen...Give it To Me or House Party or Must Got Lost (with an iconic Rock Rapp intro) from Blow Your Face Out should be next up!
Musta Got Lost live with the intro is J Geils at their peak. Saw them live in early 80s and they kill it!
Gone to a lot of concerts in the 70's and 80's, Seen them all. Queen Zep, Tull, etc.... This is the best live band ever
Yeah they put on a great show but then sold out with last album
Two for Tuesday ...Searching for a love/etc
@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN don't agree, Centerfold, like Love Stinks before it, was a cheap gimmick song but the overall Freeze Frame album is still R&B, just hyper modernized. It has a bit of electro, Stax, pre-British Invasion pop, rockabilly. If anything, Love Stinks album was poppier and overall further removed from their trad style.
Peter Wolf AKA The Woofa Goofa Mafa Toofa- WBCN Radio DJ
When Wolf came on Stage and says: "Were gonna Blow your Face Out" you know you are going to get a good show.
First live album I ever bought. Set the bar pretty high.
Was lucky to see them on 3 occasions and it was always a party when they hit the stage! Fun, Fun, Fun!
Still the best concert I’ve ever been to. Nobody sat down the whole time. It was at Eastern Michigan University.
OH, YEAH! 1972. Sophomore in high school and this was EVERY Friday night party! Local boys who made it big. Saw them once live. Strangest pairing of bands ever. They opened for The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Somehow, it worked during the day in a stadium. 10:04
One of the best bands of the 70's. If you want to pronounce the Bands name correctly, make the E silent, and put emphasis on the I GeiILs, they are amazing. They were awesome live also.
When J. Geils was a cool rockin blues band! Then they went commercial and MTV fame.......Duane Allman loved this band and had them open up shows for The Allman Brothers! 1970 and 1971
Yeah they commercial stuff sucked
Finally! A reactor reacts to one of my all-time favorite head-banging, foot-tapping, all-round fun-time music songs! I've loved this album since 1972 and I think it's in the top 3 live rock albums, which could include Allman Brothers at the Fillmore East, The Who Live at Leeds and a couple of more. (I know that would be more than 3, but so what.)
Magic Dick is regarded as one of the top 5 harmonica players in the world. I believe most people would put him at #3. I think he is #1. It was real interesting to meet him in 2009. Danny K. was mind blowing. I think he was really pissed that day. Stephen Jo Bladd is a really nice person in real life. I met him in Pittsburgh, PA in the mid 80's.
I've been recommending this to every reactor but you're the first that I've seen. I was a Michigan boy and loved these two tracks since graduating high school in '72. I still own the album.
Yeah too many wimpy boy requesters with shitty taste...
Like with Neil Young wimpy boys only want the Acoustic...oh mommy Mommy I want Harvest Moon.cause I only like short garbage shit
FYI his name is pronounced as GILES
With a hard G
Now this is what rock & roll sounds like. The entire is fire. Thank you so much for bringing music this good to all your fans. Great commentary too.
My older brother had this when it came out. I literally cut my teeth on this album and love it to no end. ❤
I remember the first time hearing this I was impressed. I took a liking to them. I wanted to play harp because of Magic Dick.
Yeah I was lucky enough to get to see him in concert in the venue of about 5000 people. Next you should check out blow your face out live.
It was a great time to be in college and in the need for party music!!!
Lee , can you imagine our minds being blown , man what a time
Saw them 1983 Dallas. Sat on second row threw a joint on stage.
Oh Boy …… you have to check out “Give It To Me” J .Geils was the party band of the 70’s Peter was god here in Boston !!!
(1975) off the album “Bloodshot”
“First, I Look At The Purse” (1970)
“Detroit Breakdown” (1974)
“South side Shuffle” (1975)
“Surrender” (1977)
“Sanctuary” (1979)
“Nighttime” (1980)
“Love Stinks” (1980)
…….all tracks, Classic Bangers at all House Parties of the 70’s ❤️🎸🤘🏼 (Boston)
Don't forget Live House party! Used to listen to it all the time in the early 70s.
Nope Give it to me was awful...it was their sellout for money garbage song
@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN ….thank you for your opinion, but it won’t change mine ! I’ve seen them over a dozen times, the crowd always seem to like it when they played it. ❤️🎸🤘🏼
I used to get rare J. Geils tapes from Danny's babysitter. Great band
Fantastic band🤘.I have the vinyl record. All the album are great.
Great tune, awesome band! Next, check out Back To Get Ya from their studio album Bloodshot, released in 73. ✌️
Listen to their 'Musta Got Lost' for an early rap session.
Pronounced "Guy-els", like Smiles. LOL. When I was in college in the late 70's and early 80's, I had a buddy who rarely had this album off his turntable. J. Geils was one of the great bands out of Boston, along with Aerosmith, The Cars and Boston, back in the day. Peter Wolf was a maniac on stage and off. Director Davis Lynch (Eraserhead, Blue Velvet) was Peter's roomie in college and thought Mr. Wolf was "too weird". WOW.
My best high school friend went to the show at the Cinderella in Roseville. The assembly line, Vietnam, the MC5, the Stooges , Alice -Detoit was ready to blow their faces off. Geils rhymes with smiles aisles. Huge Boston band with a second home in the D.
For what it's worth the e is silent in Geils so it sounds like Giles. Great reaction! Definitely a party band lol
The party band par excellence from Boston/Worcester.
Give it to me off of the Bloodshot album is another great party song by The J. Geils Band.
No that way a stupid crappy song...they were just playing for big money the...sold out with crappy songs
In 1972 I would turn it up on Dads stereo and blow are face out ! ! ! One the greatest live albums in the day. There main hit on this Ali’s Looking for a Love. Thanks for playing. Try the Bloodshot album “Ain’t Nothing But A Party “or “Got to Give it to Me.”
Great party band. Legends
Finally much better than their last few albums when they sold out....but they always were a good live band
Their album "Bloodshot", a couple of years later, fused this sort of rock energy with R&B/Disco. Danceable beats out the wazoo. Cuts like "House Party" and "Give It To Me" packed the dance floor. Lots of sweat, lol. I was there.
That whole album is GREAT.
You've finally came upon the best live album ever made. Enjoy it. Listen to the whole thing😊
Not their most popular stuff but,in my opinion, their best.
Must have got lost live is a must
this gonna' blow your face OFF !
Give a listen too Serves You Right To Suffer on the same Live Album
Saw JGB twice, neither intentional. First was in a parking garage opening for Black Sabbath on Paranoid tour, and second was 74 to see PFM who were opening for JGB. They DID bring it and Magic Dick was amazing.
Fantastic Dynamic Band! Party band!! 👌
Give it to me and nothing but a party are two other bangers worth checking out.
Used to listen to this album back in the 70s. Great rock n roll, amazing harp by Magic Dick, killer Jerry Lee Lewis style piano. This band reminds me of Savoy Brown, another great blues rock 70s band. you should check out Savoy Brown's Hellbound Train album.
Thank you Lee. Full House & Blow Your Face Out were the greatest live albums of the 70’s if you loved Rock n Roll Blues. You did good playing Whammer/Hard Driving back to back, only way they should be heard.
Next up should be their live versions of Musta Got Lost, an FM radio staple on 70’s/80’s and then the live Ain’t Nothing But a Houseparty from Blow Your Face Out.
Always love to the bad boys from Boston.
Thanks again 🎸
Had this album on 8 track. Wore that tape out. Saw them live at Masonic Temple in Detroit
👌
Album cover designed for stoners to have something to ponder before discovering what you discovered! The segue to "Hard Drivin' Man" is supreme! The big-hair headbangers of the 1980s were also-rans compared to folks who danced to these tunes and bands.
Just wait till you hear some Jazz harmonica..
Toots Thielman was an incredible jazz harmonica player and composer--
There's actually footage of him doing a duet with Jaco Pastorius, playing a classic Ellington ballad, "Sophisticated Lady"..
J. Geils -"One Last Kiss"🤘😎
The entire album is great.
Greatest Live Band Ever give a listen too there Blow Your Face Out Live Album it KICKS A$$
Pronounced J.Guy-ells Band, do "First I look at the Purse!"
Loving this channel! Folks coming up with suggestions like this, the best live rock / blues album of the '70s (possibly of all recorded time)?
The whole Album is awesome
If you like the harmonica listen to Lee Oskar from the band War.
Check out First I Look at the Purse by them, that’s a rocker!!!!
Oh yeah, its very good all right. Magic Dick blows the harp and sets the bar for all harmonica players.
Yes!
My neighbor liked "Give It To Me" from J. Geils Band so much that he threw a rock through my window so he could hear it better.
Nope garbage after they sold out.
.probably worst song they ever did...This was exquisite....
Stand back. This band will blow you away.
J G (hard G sound) aisles
J Gaisles
Lookin For A love by J Geils
Steven Joe Bladd on the drum kit.
