Oh how that shingle load takes me back. Living in Minneapolis when I used to do flatbed I had a shingle load almost every time I left the house. Good video keep up the good work
Man I really appreciate your videos. I had gotten an offer from my neighbor to haul quickcrete and brick for Oldcastle shipper direct with my rig, but I've only pulled dry van, reefer and end dumps and had not gotten the experience in flatbed and was unsure. Got hooked up with a crane hauling gig for about 4 months until I got into it with my driver manager and got fired, but I made a decent amount of money and got that securement experience I needed. Nice to be able to have someone show you how and what should be done. Thanks for the instruction.
They did a practice of panic braking with bricks and similar setups. The x in front really does help. Only if you slam on brakes. Othersetups the skids slide forward.
Been watching a few of your Vidieos your sincere in your messages to help other truckers I like the lights they are tools adjust them use them Keep on doing what your doing : )
1) I heard the saying "tight is tight". Like dont overtighten the straps or it could cause damage. Is that true? 2) Try Canadian popcorn. Its amazing, they dont have the FDA so it isnt all processed its way more natural.
You actually learned something from this video?? Instead of showing anything he showed like 1 minute, fast forward then just started talking... Would've been way better if he actually showed what he was doing 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
Nice upgrade.. I think I put full fenders and full light package on the rear end. and polish out everything.. mine is 48 inch light on the top of truck. FYI it you get a light bar that is above the cab. You’ll have to get a ga permit for amber light. Good video and be safe and have a blessed day
Thanks Charles I didn’t know that about Georgia. I definitely want full fenders eventually, it’s a clean look. Better lights on the rear would be nice too, when my truck gets shinier I’ll definitely have it polished too 👍🏻
I like seeing the different things your doing to your truck bec I basically have the same truck 2012 kw t660 72"sleeper white.. only difference is I have dual stacks up the back with a back window..I'm also wanting to take my top fairing off when the weather permits.. can't wait to see more.. stay safe driver God bless
Really looks cool with a flat top. I would run a row of lED's across the top where those brackets are then add a few more clearance lights then add chicken lights down the side and a big badass chrome bumper and to top it all off ..... a blind mounted visor. Damn it's fun spending other peoples money LOL.
So you got rid of the roof mount snow plow. Now get ahold of Bison Grille Guards in Mansfield Mo. for an awesome bumper. Ooida members a discount on them. Love the one tthey built for my Pete
If I could figure out how to post a pic in the comments I would show you the one I have. Maybe you will find me somewhere that Mercer loads. I’m driving a light blue 379 flat top.
I know this video is 3 years old and i don’t know if you did this or not but you didnt show it in the video. On the middle stacks where you only have one strap you are suppose to put the top shingle that is sideways onto the opposite facing ones and strap them down or else you are leaving a stack of shingles unsecured on each middle pallet. I enjoy the videos though 👍🏻
Personally unless it's nailed down. I use 2 straps per shingle stack. overkill? yes. but if something shifts, I have a extra strap to hold it down until I can get parked safely. and because I'm paranoid

Either it has changed in two years or they don’t stick so well in the cold. Personally I have been at this for a couple months just picking up Certainteed shingles daily. Almost everyone flips the single bundle on top of the other three and straps over that for the middle skids. The ends always have two on each skid.
Thanks for the for that I'm the kettle korn guy I have been here 10 years. It us to be known as grandma's kettle korn. Now it's Bob's kettle Korn. I got you subscribe on my phone. Thanks
I'm fairly new to flat bed, only been doing it for about 2 months now, Im looking for tips. So when I throw my straps and I'm hooking under the trailer, what is the best way to keep the flat hook, hooked to the trailer. Never fails by the time I get around and get my strap rolled up the dang hook falls out lol
No need to twist unless your hauling something like insulation or something you shouldn't crush. Also, straps tend to smack pods if not twisted. Crank them shingles down. You won't hurt them if you're using corners.

When I bought my 579 back in January my plans were to take the roof fairing off before I put it on the road...3 months later ...its still on here! Lol...Same problem you have...What to do with the bracket mount holes that will be left....smh...
Thought I would let you know that you left out a very important part of tying down those pallets of shingles as well as any other types of pallet loads and most other loads as well using straps and or chains. Back in either January of 2015 or 2014, putting 2 straps on the front pallet and the back was and is still mandated by DOT regulations as a safety measure. They did that because of too many loads shifting and falling off. I know for a fact IF YOU ARE SEEN, meaning they actually are looking for this, by DOT or state troopers or at a chicken coup, with out an additional strap on the front and back, you will be stopped, you will be ticketed and and you will be put out of service until you throw another strap on the front and back. No that did not happen to me because I did what needed to be done....By the way before I became semi- retired, pun intended, I pulled out of the Owens Corning plant here in NE Ohio, were I live, for a few years and their specs then required your tractor trailer to be able to carry up to 53,000 lbs. That is mainly due to the architecture shingles which weigh much more than regular shingles. (unless they have changed their requirements) They never loaded my trailer with that much weight though. CertainTeed shingles and Gaff had the same requirements back when I pulled them as well. And as always, remember in my day, drivers who we called SuperTruckers, were called that because they were assholes who thought they knew it all and who did stupid shit and made the rest of us look bad which also lead to more regulations because of these know it all assbites. Keep this in mind when you talk to a certain driver at Mercer who calls himself SuperTrucker...I think thats funny. I guess he don't know how that name came about..... Oh ya, do what you want to your tractor to reflect who you are not what others think it should be. Make her purty all you want but please just keep her clean cause dirty trucks get pulled over the most. If you put more lights on her make sure you keep them lit otherwise you'll be docked for that on an inspection. .... be safe out there.
Thank you so much for the insight, you’re correct I didn’t know it was DOT mandated about the two in the front and back but I learn every day 👍🏻 that’s funny about SuperTrucker 🤪 ultimately I will certainly make my decisions about my truck, after all, I have to see her everyday!! Sometimes it can be difficult to keep her clean, especially since she’s white but I certainly do the best I can. Thanks for your input!!
@@DrivenTrucking One more thing. Adding those cross straps does in fact keep your load safer. It is just like chaining down dunnage to prevent pipe going forward off the trailer in case of hard braking. Also, You should look into getting longer V-board because using those smaller ones will compress the edges of the shingle bundle and deform the edges. This is quite noticeable in warm or hot weather and consignees will note this and back charge you or Mercer which then they, Mercer may back charge you. I used the 3 ft ones myself because it prevented this but it also helped in keeping them better secured. They are expensive but the last time I wrote you on another vid, you want your securement to be the best it can be because your family is riding beside, behind and in front of you. Stay safe out there...
The headlights look very nice....how much did the shop charge for removing the brackets ? Have a same truck t660 yellow, would like to remove the brackets....
I had some other work done because when you remove the brackets they are not painted behind, I want to see it was roughly about $1000 maybe 1200 for everything
I agree ☝🏼 the ratchets will be easier to control but also make sure there aren’t any twists in the chain. Road bumps make the chain move a bit and over time can cause those twists to come undone and actually “lengthen” the chain causing looseness.
@@DrivenTrucking I wish I could use ratchet binders, but snap ones are what I am supplied with as a company driver. I do my load check and re-tighten them. I have been untwisting my chains and making sure they are nice and straight. I was told by other drivers that the slabs cool a lot while down the road and retract.
That’s interesting, I haven’t hauled a bunch of slabs so I don’t know anything about retraction. Maybe throw a chain across the back like an x chain but one to keep it from moving?
@@DrivenTrucking Thanks man, am hauling from Montreal to Hamilton with two slabs, but come next week with thaw and load restrictions I won't be so heavy with only one at a time.

Oh that was my first upgrade! I have a legacy seat, probably the best thing I’ve done so far! Good idea on the roof, it’ll be painted but I’m not sure about the clear coat. I’ll have to ask and make sure. Love the lights idea 👍🏻
A refinement...instead of winding up all the excess strap on the winch....start with a bare winch, pull nearly all the excess strap thru the winch slot, bring the excess behind the rubrail, fold the excess in 18" or so lengths, pinch that against trailer as you tighten winch....ideal is about 4 wraps around winch drum. This allows for super tight tension, straps aren't all curled up tightly next time, easier too handle when wet, and when they freeze...unwind 4 layers with winch bar and undo the folds....way easier they unwinding layer after layer with winch bar. Straps last longer when stored out of sunlight (uv rays destroy them). I prefer straps with short chain and grab hook versus flat hook. Also a few winches on opposite side of trailer for hard to control loads and allows doubled-up straps for wide and tall oversize.
You didn’t show step-by-step strapping. Sorry, no offense, but your video was pretty much pointless. I wanted to see the step by step process, and not the finished setup. 👎🏼
Just my opinion, but it appears you are more focused on looking forward (possibly because you are talking to the camera) and not checking your mirrors frequently enough. I really do find your videos full of information and very entertaining though, especially the more recent ones. Your channel is definitely one of the best trucking channels I have found and my personal favorite! Keep up the great work.
Dude that truck needs a drop vicer same color as the truck lol are you going to start our own business with the truck and pull over size dude those guys make bank a few of my truck driving friends do that even though they drive for. Somebody they make bank lol
I love seeing young truckers that don't have real V-board try to strap 50 gallon drums or shrink wrapped rocks for home depot. 30 straps later they be rolling.
Sigh..... It's been a while since I've watched videos on load securement. I used to watch them when I was driving and it always amazed me how many guys made videos with shit securement advice. Here we go again. New drivers, do not listen to this guy. I don't know why the fuck he's shitting on the idea of cross straps on the front. Any load that is square like that on the front, why the hell wouldn't you do it? It's just 2 extra straps. Don't be lazy. Even something like lumber where the cross straps aren't blocking a lot of the peices, do it anyway. Better than nothing. Also, on many shingle loads, the packs are loaded onto the pallets staggered, meaning that 2 straps are required to secure each pallet. I couldn't get a good look at the top of his load, but he very possibly had packs of shingles with nothing holding them down when he was using only 1 strap. Twisting the straps is absolutely unnecessary if you're putting them on correctly. If they are tight enough, you're good. Occasionally you might get a load of something that is kind of soft and you can't really tighten the straps excessively. It can help in those instances to twist the strap, but shingles? Lol. Go nuts. Tighten the fuck out of em.
What should I do next to the Ole Girl?!

Yes sir I have 11 winches on each side and 2 portas. I’m not a fan of doing the fold however, just my personal opinion 👍🏻
Half twist is for flapping
I will try to show you my 83 feet beams on your Instagram love the videos keep them coming
Cool, I’d love to see that 👍🏻
That's easy shit, haul some coils.
Drop down viser
I definitely want one

My ex company like 2 front, 2 back..

You didn’t show step-by-step strapping. Sorry, no offense, but your video was pretty much pointless. I wanted to see the step by step process, and not the finished setup. 👎🏼
Dude fast forward through the good stuff I learned nothin on this video
Any one who wants to drive 53ft van?i am Looking for a OTR driver.
I agree with you which is why I very rarely film like this anymore
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I have 4" wide and 10" deep 👍🏻🤷🏻♂️🕺🏻
Oh lord lol
Dude that truck needs a drop vicer same color as the truck lol are you going to start our own business with the truck and pull over size dude those guys make bank a few of my truck driving friends do that even though they drive for. Somebody they make bank lol
Agreed D, a drop would look great! I’m going to hopefully get into a bit more OD stuff so we’ll see 😊
The blonde ldy who sells that corn pretty hot , lol
I use real v baords. 2×4×8. 2 starps per board.
I love seeing young truckers that don't have real V-board try to strap 50 gallon drums or shrink wrapped rocks for home depot. 30 straps later they be rolling.
Lmao, Yeah that’s why I don’t run loads like that because I don’t carry them
sell it and buy a pete!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

Those plastic edges are garbage bud. Especially for shingles.
Agreed, now that I’m a step I don’t run them as much but if the need for v boards arise I’ll grab some
U should talk less, and show us how to actually strap freight
