    Gooood morning everyone, from David in Omaha, NE. I think that by building the barn now with Ken being available, was the right move. He has helped you and Gina erect 3 good quality buildings now, and they should last for decades. Have a blessed day Al, Gina, and friends! Cheers!

    Just a thought about the barn doors. Until you get the remaining hardware you might want to stabilize them some how just in case you get any type of wind event. Wouldn't want to see anything get bent out of shape on top rail....

    I also watch "Simple Living Alaska". They did something that seemed pretty cool, making an old high tunnel into a chicken run and attached it to their chicken coop so the chickens could go in the coop at night, but could run more freely in the high tunnel during the day.

    Food for thought on coop - unless dead set on stationary build, recommend building it to be put on casters to retain options for the stall...I have coop in my garage to reduce cackling outside in standard urban neighborhood, but it is on casters so I can move it around to clean under and "behind" it as it is against window for layers to get sunlight

    Greetings from Colorado. Great job on the barn electrical. Most farmers learn how to run electrical wiring. We built our first barn in the early 1980's, it was to become our farrowing house. I hired a real electrician to run the power and install the electrical panel, he gave me about a ten minute class on wiring from the breaker out to the fixtures. I have been doing it ever sense. It is a nice skill to have. Thanks for sharing your lives with us.

    It amazes me that in USA electrical panels, switch boxes and cable conductors are made of metal. In Europe we made them of PVC to avoid the risk of indirect electrocution by touching them in case one of the cables inside the panel loses electrical insulation by accident for any reason (or even just in case of a stupid loose contact). And if by chance they are made of metal (very rare but somethimes it can happen in old industrial applications) we have the obligation to connect the panel-chassis to the ground and have a dedicated differential protection

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 7 місяців тому +1

      those metal panels ARE tied to ground. It's part of our code that ALL metal will be grounded. (including a metal building)

      @@rupe53 "those metal panels ARE tied to ground"
      My bad, good to know :P. In any case in Europe a metal panel for that use is always considered "not ideal" for the above reasons, even if connected to the ground, (which is also mandatory in EU of course)

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 7 місяців тому +1

      you are correct. There is supposed to be slack available.... and in a straight line, not around a bend. I see many guys installing a 12" junction box with a loop, instead of that LB. From the back of the box, you can go straight through the wall into the panel with a short nipple. Of course, most guys would pull THHN(W) wire instead of SER so easier to work with as well. BTW, do the same thing at both ends by both buildings.

    Ken's retirement and the barn build helps explain why youve been working some of the work shop's interior on what seems like more of a peicemeal time table too. Something tells me that there will still be building and infrastructure projects projects for quite a bit into the future; maybe not big buildings but still a lot of building.

    Perhaps, for those that may not know, the reason one does not bond the subpanel is that bonding the neutral and ground wires together would allow the NEUTRAL wire multiple pathways, which may cause the chassis of some equipment to become energized. That would not be good! So, with the ground and neutral bonded, the current may travel on both the ground and neutral back to the main panel. "If the load becomes unbalanced and ground and neutral are bonded, the current will flow through anything bonded to the sub-panel (enclosure, ground wire, piping, etc.) and back to the main panel. Obvious shock hazard!" (IM Home Inspections).
    Al, this video is another great instructional video! Thank you. I have been a subscriber for years. Your channel presents the best step-by-step instructions by way of video and Gina's expertise with the camera.

    Hey - can’t use plastic boxes when making an M/C wire. It doesn’t properly ground the outside sheathing of the cable and you have the potential of electrifying the outside of the cable and any metal object that it comes in contact with. Use metal boxes with metal wire (I am a Licensed Electrician in MA).

    If your animals experience irritable tendencies you may need to do equipotential bonding of the metal surfaces in the building like the sheeting, rails, etc. If there are only lights and no larger electrical equipment this might not be a huge issue. As always, I recommend people check their local codes.

    I have Idaho pasture pigs and love them! I am in my sixties and was intimidated by a large sow and her piglets at first. This breed is actually pretty docile and I am able to get in with the piglets without any problem. She gets a little protective and snorts at me if I pick up a piglet and it squeals, but I have never been hurt at all.
    IPPs grow a little slower than market pigs but I feel like they have been a great addition to my homestead.

    Good morning.
    Barn’s looking great. Love the doors.
    We had to put outdoor weather switches (see-through coverings) in our barns, stables and outbuildings (UK regs). I think it’s because people are more likely to have wet hands/gloves when working with animals. Or safer for animals if they lick the switches. They also have a little glow light to help locate in the dark which is useful.

    Going great on the barn build! You shouldn't need GFCI breakers for outlets that are out of normal reach, like ceiling mounted outlets for lights according to the 2021 IBC. Regular outlets for power, easily accessed, do require GFCI protection, but instead of putting in a $100-$150 breaker, can use a GFCI outlet( $15-$25) for the first receptacle on each homerun. I just built a 24x32 workshop and this is what I was told by my building inspecter. Congrats to Ken and his heavy work retirement( he's an animal, especially for a 71 year old)! I'm 71, too and just retired from heavy line mechanic in December 2023...
